Hello! how are you? I hope well.
so :) I'm the person who made the requests for Liu Kang and Reiko on Ao3 and I'm glad you joined tumblr :D
I hope it won't be a problem if I ask for some headcanons of caregiver Shao Kahn and regressor Reiko?
Oh my gosh hiiiii!!! :D. I distinctly remember writing yours (I was SO excited about havung an escuzse to write Reiko <3)
Tumblr media
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
CG Shao w/ Regressor Reiko Hcs
🗡 Reiko regresses to about 4-5
🛡 Very much a kid regressor . . . But my goodness, an energetic kid regressor
🗡 The first time Shao saw Reiko regress was when Reiko was clearly irritating a middlespace Rain and had to intervene before any fighting started
🛡 Ended up ‘watching’ both regressors (Rain denies that he was ever babysat, he was just in the room while Shao watched Reiko 😒)
🗡 Reiko actually panicked after Shao watched him and was worried about his job position (it was an incredibly vulnerable scene between both men)
🛡 Ever since then, Reiko likes running to Shao some times when he's small
🗡 Shao actually adores watching him, especially because he had to raise Reiko to face war and terrifying things and now he can give him the childhood he knows Reiko lings for
🛡 (^ Feels secretly guilty that his way of raising Reiko is why he regresses, Reiko has yet to comment)
🗡 Reiko does see Shao as a Dad figure, and after he first regresses around him, almost any praise from him will make him feel small and involuntarily regress (it got better, and was able to control it again, don't worry)
🛡 Once called Shao ‘Dad’ by accident when he was big and it made Reiko slip by accident because of how worried he was about Shao getting upset
🗡 Shao just patted his head and asked if there was anything he could do for him
🛡 Reiko is very . . . energetic, and extremely chaotic
🗡 Loves wrestling!!!
🛡 Actually, loves any type of play fighting
🗡 Wrestling, sword fighting, pillow fights, all of them!!!
🛡 Although he gets a bit (really) rough when he's play fighting and can accidentally hurt someone :(
🗡 Luckily, Shao's very strong, and he's more than willing to play fight with Reiko
🛡 Makes sure to give him wooden play swords though, he's not having any accidents happen
🗡 Usually, Reiko likes acting like a brat or patience testing
🛡 But with Shao? He is an angel!! 👼 (Que to all his friends glaring at him)
🗡 Will try to patience test, but is also much more willingly to follow Shao's ‘orders’ than anyone else
🛡 Shao realized this and encouraged him to act more normal and be more kid like
🗡 He might be his best soldier, but right now, he's his favorite kid
🛡 (^ No Reiko didn't cry at that confession, you saw nothing)
🗡 Shao is a lot more willing to let things slide because of this
🛡 Usually, when he says it's bedtime, it's bedtime
🗡 But if Reiko chooses to whine and pout? Well . . . five more minutes won't hurt, but no more!!
🛡 Shao's CG nicknames are Dada, Papa, or just Shao (a sign that Reiko's regressing too, since he always makes sure to say General Shao)
🗡 Reiko's favorite nicknames are Little Warrior, Little One, Baby Boy, Darling, ‘Hun, Precious
🛡 Reiko does have times where he's not super chaotic and energetic
🗡 Instead, he's very calm and is willing to sit down and cuddle
🛡 Loves cuddles, and loves it when Shao cuddles him because of how big Shao is and how tiny he feels
🗡 Also really touch starved and actively searches for praise and attention (even if he has to act out for it)
🛡 Story time!!! Outlandish tales!!!
🗡 You thought Reiko gave good story times? Shao gives amazing story times, and little Reiko firmly believes every single one of them
🛡 . . . They'll probably get him hyped up by accident though and try to get Shao to fight him like how the fighter in the story did >:3
🗡 . . . You don't understand the amount of angst I could give Reiko (he's one of my favorites)
🛡 Coming back after an incredibly harsh day as a warrior only to break down as soon as his door shuts
🗡 Or rushes to the bathroom to hide in the shower so no one can see him cry
🛡 Luckily, either one of his friends or Shao always find him
🗡 Reiko would say he ever regresses super young, he prides himself in being a big kid
🛡 But these days? These days anyone who sees him like this all really agrees that he regresses more to a baby headspace
🗡 Needs to be held and cradled, needs to have someone there but is also too afraid to reach out for someone
🛡 Demands cuddles when he's like this
🗡 Shao physically can't let him go anyhow, Reiko's grip is way too tight on him
🛡 Shao got Reiko a bottle for when he gets like this, because Reiko can't use his big kid cups with how shakey his hands are
🗡 Reiko pouted and claimed he didn't need it but it's super useful for when he's like this
🛡 Most times when he's small, he keeps his face paint on, he likes wearing it, very proud of being a warrior
🗡 But sometimes he'll take it off (no one is allowed to make fun of his face because he will burst into tears)
🛡 Shao has caught Reiko more than once looking in the mirror confused because he didn't recognize himself without his war faint
🗡 Will let his hair down more when he's tinier, and loves it when Shao plays with it
🛡 He's actually more of an independent regressor, and is able to regress and watch himself
🗡 But his constant search for anyone who will give him praise and soft touches makes him a lot more dependant than he realizes
🛡 Luckily though, Shao realized, and makes sure to give Reiko some extra fatherly loving
🗡 Reiko's favorite regression item is a stuffed bear he has that he's owned for years
🛡 It was the first stuffie he was ever given, and was actually a gift from Shao himself when he was first taken in
🗡 That bear does not leave his room and stays on his bed, most times tucked in comfortably
🛡 Shao was surprised to see the stuffie still alive and offered to buy Reiko a new one (his old one is pretty . . . tattered)
🗡 Reiko absolutely refuses because that's his favorite stuffie and no one can take it from him >:(
🛡 It's only one of the few things he sees as his and can't bare to part with it
🗡 . . . It is so . . loved to the point that while it mainly stays tucked in Reiko's bed, he can't sleep with it because one tear and it’ll go bye bye
🛡 So it's either gently in his hands (one of the only things he's gentle with) or on the bed
🗡 Shao did get Reiko a new stuffie specifically for sleepy time but now Reiko has two favorite stuffies!! :D
🛡 Shao isn't always a soft man, but he's extremely soft towards a little Reiko, that's basically his kid after all <3
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
AAAAAAAH, REIKO IS ANOTHER FAVORITE TRADGETY OF MINE!!!! :(

大家好! Monday was a public holiday and I was on leave on Wednesday and Thursday, so it was a short work week. Taking the bus to catch up with Grace and Douglas revealed interesting new places and I decided to explore them. 1 of these was a renovated coffee shop with bright and colourful signboards. Besides being airy and clean, there was a variety of food stalls.
Tumblr media
youtube
I chose wu gu shao ya tang mian (boneless roast duck soup noodles) since I haven't had duck for some time. The QQ (springy) noodles came with a good portion of meat, 2 pieces of tender pork ribs and blanched lettuce, decent nutritional value compared to what is served at the ban mian (hand pulled noodles) stall near the office. It was a surprisingly filling meal too; I didn't feel hungry till past dinnertime. I hope to return to this coffee shop and try out the other delicious fare. There're some noodles that look really yummy.
Tumblr media
无骨烧鸭汤面 wu gu shao ya tang mian $5
Tumblr media
板面 ban mian with added pork $7.50, up from $6.80 at the stall near the office

With Xmas over, preparation for Chinese New Year begins. Colourful stalls selling auspicious red and gold lanterns, banners as well as other home decorations bearing lucky wishes start to dot various parts of the country. Spending the last of my leave playing local tourist was even more fun as I wandered around and soaked up the joyous atmosphere. We had the afternoon off on Friday, so I was back at the office in the morning. After that, Grace, Douglas and I had our weekly catch up.

2022 is drawing to a close. In many ways, these last 12 months have been very tough for many people globally. Skyrocketing inflation, dining establishments and food businesses practising shrinkflation/skimpflation, sticking to a budget, belt tightening and a decline in living standards are just some of the things the world faced. But we also minimised food waste, progressed to a greener way of life and relearned survival skills from generations before us. This enabled us to become tougher and more resilient, which is a much needed silver lining.

From tomorrow onwards, we start life with GST at 8%. I'm taking Pa out for lunch and will also explore a little over the long weekend. Perhaps I'll return to the renovated coffee shop I shared about in the last post and try different noodles! There's a stall whose signature dish looks really delicious. 下次见!

Light Years from Home : a novel  by Mike Chen
My Review (5*) I loved this story and I loved it because it's a family story with sci-fi elements. It's a family story that analyzes how a family can be torn by the disappearance of a member and how each of those remaining will react. Kass, Jacob, and Evie are the siblings at the center of the story. Kass and Evie are still suffering from the aftermath of Jacob's disappearance, Jacobs is somewhere in the Universe fighting an intergalactic war till something happens and he comes home (to the Earth). Nothing will be the same, a lot will happen and may the old wound will be healed or the Earth will be destroyed. I wasn't a fan of Kass or Evie at the beginning of the book: they seemed a bit obsessive and lost in their world, Jacob seemed easier to like till you realize he left his family behind without even say goodbye. There's a lot of character development and the arc of each character will improve and change them. I liked the mix of the two genres and I found it well done. The plot is fast paced and I was engrossed in this riveting and entertaining story. Highly recommended. Many thanks to MIRA and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Synopsis: Every family has issues. Most can't blame them on extraterrestrials.
Fifteen years ago while on a family camping trip, Jakob Shao and his father vanished. His father turned up a few days later, dehydrated and confused, but convinced that they'd been abducted by aliens. Jakob remained missing. The Shao sisters, Kass and Evie, dealt with the disappearance end ensuing fallout in very different ways. Kass over the years stepped up to be the rock of the family: carving a successful path for herself, looking after the family home, and becoming her mother's caregiver when she starts to suffer from dementia. Evie took her father's side, going all in on UFO conspiracy theories, and giving up her other passions to pursue the possible truth of life outside our planet. And always looking for Jakob. When atmospheric readings from Evie's network of contacts indicate a disturbance event just like the night of the abduction, she heads back home. Because Jakob is back. He's changed, and the sisters aren't sure what to think. But one thing is certain -- the tensions between the siblings haven't changed at all. Jakob, Kass and Evie are going to have to grow up and sort out their differences, and fast. Because the FBI is after Jakob, and possibly an entire alien armada, too.

Singapore’s Homage, which matches patients and caregivers, raises $4.15M for expansion
Homage, a Singapore-based startup that helps connect caregivers and organizations with patients and their families, has raised $4.15 million as it begins to eye overseas expansions.
The company was started in 2016 by Gillian Tee, a Singaporean who spent time working in the U.S., healthcare industry exec Lily Phang and former banker Tong Duong. Tee’s previous stints include founding Rocketrip, a startup backed by Y Combinator that has raised nearly $20 million, but she moved home after 15 years to be closer to her family.
The goal of Homage is to make it easier for caregivers and patients to connect, whilst also keeping their families updated.
“We’re realizing how much of a need there is for personalized one-on-one care,” Tee told TechCrunch in an interview. “A lot of what we do is actually non-medical, and it’s even more clear that need to help people be mobile, be functional and have the choice to live with dignity as they age.”
Homage raised $1.2 million a year ago, now this new round is jointly led by existing backer Golden Gate Ventures and new investor HealthXCapital. Other participants in the round included returning investors SeedPlus, Juha Paananen (CEO of Nonstop Games, acquired by King.com), and former JobsCentral execs Lim Dershing (CEO) and (co-founder) Huang Shao Ning.
Tee, the Homage CEO, said the company is ramping up as it sees increased demand for its services.
Homage began focused on caregiving for aging patients, but it has since expanded to cover areas such as physiology, speech and occupational therapy — areas for post-strike discharge. It also offers six different apps, which include two for caregivers, two for family members and two for partners, such as NGOs and other care agencies.
Tee said the plan is to use this new capital to push into other verticals and offer new services where there is demand from patients and caregivers, but Homage is also looking overseas for potential expansion for the first time.
“The focus is on Singapore but we’re looking at one other market in APAC,” she said. “We’re not quite decided on which one that’ll be [but] we see that across Asia this is something that’s very much needed.”
Along the way, Homage has also received praise from a very high level in Singapore: none other than prime minister Lee Hsien Loong.
On National Day Rally, August 20 2017, the PM praised Homage for tapping the rise of on-demand apps like Uber and said he hopes that “more companies and government agencies will learn from Homage in using IT to improve lives.”

CG Shao Kahn w/ Little Lord Raiden (Fic)
"Ah Lord Raiden, you wished to see me?" Shao Kahn smirked as the God teleported into his throne room.
"You know exactly what you did!" Raiden glared at the man. . . Dragon thing.
Lord Raiden really didn't feel like having this conversation. Every so often Shao Kahn would attempt to do something to just push the boundaries that Mortal Kombat set into place.
Which meant every so often, Lord Raiden and Shao Kahn need to have a talk.
It was irritating, exactly what Shao Kahn's plans wanted. To irritate their God, to distract him long enough, to get his followers to worry.
And it worked every time.
"Oh?" Shao Kahn acted confused. "Whatever do you mean by that, Lord Raiden?"
He said his title so patronizing, Raiden hated the way he said it. Shao Kanh never respected his title as Lord, he just used it to get under his skin.
And goodness did it work getting under his skin.
He didn't want to have this conversation. he hadn't regressed in almost three full weeks, he felt on the verge of breaking down. But breaking down in front of someone who would exploit such a vulnerable state of his? use it against him? Raiden didn't want to chance it.
And yet here he was, chancing it.
"Pushing the rules of Mortal Kombat? You're just as bad as Shang Tsung," Raiden tisked.
Shao Kahn laughed, "Just as bad? Lord Raiden, the little weakling works for me. Without me, he'd be nothing!"
". . . You want me to call you worse, don't you?"
"I mean, I am, aren't I?" Shao Kahn said proudly. "You wish for me to remove my troops from your border, yes? Well technically, they haven't done anything wrong-"
"You and I both know what your plans are, Shao Kahn," Raiden cut him off. "Putting your troops there is only an attempt to prompt war. We have seen your spies in Earthrealm territory so remove your fleet or I will-
"What? Consult with the Elder Gods?" Shao Kahn groaned, Raiden fumbled slightly. "Yes, yes, you and your precious Elder Gods. Always guiding you, telling you what to do. Geez, can't a God think for himself once in a while?"
Now that struck a nerve. Raiden could make his own decisions, Shao Kahn had no right treating him like some child!
Unfortunately, Shao Kahn noticed how bothered Raiden seemed by the comment.
"Oh I see, so the little God can't make his own decisions!" Shao Kahn taunted. "Always having to go running to his little mommies and daddies, huh?"
"Listen here, Shao Kahn-"
"No you listen, Raiden. How can I expect to fight a war with someone who cannot even lead? If you cannot even make your own decisions by yourself, what right do you have to be a God? The Elder Gods could tell you to destroy Earthrealm to save the Realms and you'd do it!" Shao Kahn laughed. "How are you any better than I? Following those useless being."
Lord Raiden fell silent. Shao Kahn's words hurt, stinging badly in his mind. He could make his own decisions. He didn't always consult with the Elder Gods! Sometimes it was his brother, o-or Liu Kang-
But he made decisions himself too!! He did, he really did! He doesn't listen to everything the Elder Gods tell him to . . . And he wouldn't hurt others if they told him to either. He- He wouldn't.
All these big thoughts hurt Raiden's brain. He had already felt so small before coming here. Sure he was expecting a verbal battle, but not out right insults.
Shao Kahn smiled at Raiden's silence, "Awh, is the little God going to cry?"
And Raiden didn't want to admit it, but that's exactly what he began to do.
Shao Kahn froze as he heard a small sniffle. And very quickly, those small sniffles turned into quiet crying.
Raiden hide his face with his hat, very much not wanting to be here right now.
Shao Kahn sat frozen on his throne before quickly ordering his guards away. His guards, knowing better than to question or bring the experience up, left with no words.
Shao Kahn finally came down from his throne, making Raiden freak out and stumble backwards. He fell to the ground with a cry, his own sobs only becoming louder.
"Lord . . Raiden?" Shao Kahn asked caciously. "What's going on?"
Raiden hiccuped, covering his own mouth and turning away. Shao Kahn knelt down, gently grabbing his hands.
The fear in Raiden's eyes normally would have made him laugh, but right now he only felt a sort of pitty.
"Don't cover your mouth like that, it'll make it difficult to breathe," Shao Kahn said, letting Raiden's hand go.
""m not- Not crying!" Raiden mumbled, trying to dry his tears.
"I see . . . I never meant to upset you this much," Shao Kahn mumbled. "I can remove my troops if they bother you that much."
Raiden gave a small nod, sniffling slightly. He felt embarrassed, sitting on the ground with his enemy, practically sobbing. And over something childish as being ridiculed.
"I have never seen you this upset before," Shao Kahn said carefully. "Have my insults bothered you that much?"
". . . Not usually, just feel. . small-"
"Like, your minds all fuzzy small?" Shao Kahn asked, cutting Raiden off. "As if you're not your age small?"
"How-"
"I knew a few regressors," Shao Kahn brushed him off. It was true, his most loyal General, Kotal, regressed. "Tell me what upsets you. Rarely have I ever seen someone fall to the ground in tears . . . Without getting beat or utterly destroyed beforehand that is."
Raiden hesitated slightly. He didn't want to get caught up in Shao Kahn's lies or twisted tails. He knew the best thing to do was to teleport away, but he didn't trust his abilities while so tiny. Also Fujin said he couldn't use those abilities while small, and he didn't wanna break a rule.
"I can make my own decisions."
. . . Oh, was that all?
Shao Kahn wanted to laugh, but he knew better than to mess with Raiden when his mind his mind was so vulnerable.
Shao Kahn was many things, but he wasn't a monster.
. . . . . Eeeeeeeeeeeh?
Debatable, actually.
"I see," Shao Kahn nodded, standing up, offering out his hand. "Well I'm sorry for my choice of words. I never meant to . . . insult you . . that badly."
Raiden giggled as Shao Kahn's bad apology. It was clear he had meant to insult him. But perhaps not make him drop on spot.
"It's okay," Raiden said, hesitating before accepting Shao Kahn's hand. "The troops go bye bye?"
"Yes, the troops will go bye bye," Shao Kahn promised. "Now the question is, what in the Netherrealms do we do with you?"
". . . Do you wanna pattycake with me?"
Shao Kahn looked at Raiden almost insane.
Perhaps he was too small to see him as the threat he was. Or his childlike mind was taking over. But to play pattycake with the enemy? Shao Kahn never expected such an offer.
"Of course, I'll make sure the throne room stays closed."
He never really pulled the troop stunt again.
. . . Okay, maybe once or twice after the incident, but no more!!

Age Regression is a coping mechanism!!! Where an individual mentally and emotionally returns to a younger age. Some people use this coping mechanism for things like trauma, stress, and many more things. Many also use it just for fun, it being just one of their main coping mechanisms for this harsh life we live in.

CG Reiko w/ Regressor Shao Hcs
🗡 Shao regresses kinda young, about 1-3
🛡 This is probably mostly because he holds back his regression for a super long time because he's busy, he's the general, he doesn't need relaxation time, this, that, etc, etc
🗡 So when he does regress, he's a baby that just wants to be held and loved 🥺
🛡 I like to think Shao involuntarily regressed for a super long time before even knowing what age regression was
🗡 But also never really fully slipped and was probably stuck in between headspaces without knowing
🛡 It was too scary, feeling fully small and fuzzy, what if someone caught him snuggling his blanket or babbling to his favorite stuffie!!
🗡 It was a deep secret he had where he'd find some time to relax and snuggle with his blankets and hide from all his big kid responsibilities
🛡 The first time Reiko ever saw Shao regressed was when they were doing reports together and Shao started getting frustrated because the words were getting too hard and the acts on the page were too horrid and too big for his tiny mind
🗡 Since Reiko already knew of regression, he kinda just went with the flow
🛡 Said that Shao was too tiny right now to be doing any kind of big kid files and they should take a break and do something fun! Like sword fight or wrestle (Reiko's personal favorite little activities)
🗡 Instead they just kinda cuddled in bed because Shao doesn't like doing those things when he's tiny
🛡 He already has to do them when he's big, don't make him do it while he's small 🥺
🗡 Shao doesn't fully regress regress without Reiko
🛡 He can't, it's too difficult and scary
🗡 Plus what is someone walks in? Or he forgot to lock the door? Reiko's big and strong, he can protect him!!
🛡 One of both their favorite activities is story time
🗡 Reiko has a lot of war experience, and he can use some of his victories into great outlandish tales he's done!!
🛡 (^ keeping most of the gore and stuff to practically nonexistent, and maybe fabrotacting a few things here of there, gotta keep the baby entertained!!)
🗡 You know those big dogs that think they can jump on you and sit on your lap like they're the smallest thing in the world?
🛡 That's Shao, 100%
🗡 What do you mean he's gotta be careful when he's trying to get cuddles? He's just a baby 🥺
🛡 (^ Don't worry though, Shao gets all the cuddles he wants, Reiko’s super strong!!)
🗡 Does have to be careful of his horns though, he doesn't wanna poke someone by accident, that'd hurt :(
🛡 If he did accidentally poke Reiko with them, he'd probably just get a gentle reminder that we gotta be careful when we have super cool horns because sometimes we can hurt others
🗡 Please do not yell at this man, he will cry
🛡 Or, more have tears weld in his eyes and start blubbering when you turn away
🗡 He's a big boy, he doesn't cry!! >:(
🛡 . . . Lier
🗡 Positive reaffirming and gentle redirecting work best with Shao
🛡 He doesn't like getting yelled at, or going to a naughty step, or any type of punishment
🗡 He already has to bark orders all day, deal with people he despises
🛡 Luckily, Reiko can turn very soft when he can read a room
🗡 He gets very patient when Shao does something naughty, leading him in the direction rather than yelling
🛡 Will rarely have to every put his foot down because Shao doesn't actually break too many rules
🗡 Most of their rules are for safety anyhow, although he still doesn't understand why he can't draw on the walls 😒
🛡 When Shao feels a little bit older and not baby baby, he's very bossy
🗡 What does Reiko mean he has to write one more sentence on his paperwork? No he doesn't! He can come cuddle him right now!! That's an order!! >:(
🛡 Stomps and huffs when he doesn't get his way (and Reiko has to finish his job, stupid paperwork)
🗡 Doesn't like feeling tiny and Reiko's not there, its scary
🛡 Reiko's got a full time job on his hands, bossy baby on his hip 24/7, fr
🗡 Doesn't like others babysitting him either, right now only Reiko knows and he has no plans on changing that
🛡 Reiko doesn't mind, they'll move at his pace
🗡 Horn scratches are must!!!
🛡 Well, any scratches are a must, lightly on the arm, back scratches while cuddling, almost anywhere Shao has scales
🗡 For being a lieutenant, Reiko has really nice nails that are perfect for scratchies
🛡 Reiko's favorite CG nicknames are Papa or Bubba (when Shao's really small 'Ko cause Shao will repeat it and it makes Reiko feel all big and proud)
🗡 Shao's favorite little nicknames are Little One, Fierce Guy, Tough Cookie, Baby-Bear
🛡 I could probably see Shao being a dragon regressor too??
🗡 And that means he steals all of Reiko's nice shiny stuff for his blankie nest, its his now, Reiko doesn't have a choice >:(
🛡 He's also much more active in this headspace and will play more games like tag or hide and seek
🗡 Shao also likes being called Hatchling when he's a dragon
🛡 Overall, he's either a very cuddly baby, or a little bossy baby (still super cuddly though)
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I know they're mostly focused on Shao but I hope you like them!!! :D

6 industry executives share their career paths and lessons learned
Tumblr media
There’s no such thing as a “typical” career path in pharma and healthcare. Six executives share their inspirations, “eureka” moments, professional challenges, and lessons they learned along the way.
Wei-Li Shao VP, neurosciences business unit Eli Lilly Time in the industry: 24 years
What was your most important or favorite job before your current one? Any of the GM positions I’ve had in various countries. The privilege to lead multiculturally is incredible and humbling.
What’s one thing about pharma and healthcare you’d change if given the chance? I’d accelerate the advent of digital healthcare — everything from the widespread adoption of telemedicine to the use of social media in real-world evidence. Digital has the potential to create far better outcomes and care experiences for patients.
Tumblr media
What were the most important, funny, or weird things you have learned over the course of your career? The most important thing I’ve learned is culture is the most powerful lever a leader can pull to create a high-performing team. It’s odd that so many leaders let culture develop without direction and by chance.
What were the most important, funny, or weird things you have learned over the course of your career? The most important thing I’ve learned is culture is the most powerful lever a leader can pull to create a high-performing team. It’s odd that so many leaders let culture develop without direction and by chance.
Who were your inspirations and mentors, both professionally and personally? I am inspired by anyone, famous or not, who finds their vocation. Vocation is the thing you’re meant to do that matters and it requires sacrifice. Some of these people include Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Elon Musk. I am inspired by people with purpose.
Looking back, are there any career moves or decisions you’ve made for which you’d like a mulligan, so to speak? When I was in college, I spent so much time thinking I wanted to be a doctor. If I had to do it over again, I would’ve said, “You’re meant to do other things.”
What would you do if you didn’t do what you do for a living? I’d be an author and novelist.
What is something your peers don’t know about you? I published a children’s book on Amazon this year called Anny The Tall Girl. It’s a book for children aged 4 to 6 and has a message about diversity and inclusion. All proceeds go to the United Way of Central Indiana for early childhood development and education.
What’s something unique you keep on or around your workspace? At my home office, I am surrounded by books, artwork, and items I’ve collected during my overseas assignments. They inspire me and remind me of who I am.
What is your favorite city to visit for work, and why? When I need reminding of how fast the world is changing, I relive my time in Shanghai. When I need reminding of the importance of work-life balance, I remember New Zealand.
Allyson McMillan Worldwide commercial lead in immunoscience, Bristol-Myers Squibb Time in the industry: more than 20 years
What was your original career goal? As a child, I wanted to be a paleontologist. Then in high school, I met several dynamic business leaders and decided to pursue a career in corporate America.
What was it about a career in healthcare and pharma that appealed to you? I started my career in pharmaceutical sales in rural South Carolina, and it was so powerful to see the role healthcare providers play in the community. It was in that role I concretized my commitment to healthcare as a profession and to focusing on the patient experience.
Tumblr media
What was your “eureka” moment, when you realized you were in the right place professionally? When I received my first voicemail from a physician thanking me for the support the company gave him and his patients. He thought it was rare for a company to work so hard to help his underserved community.
What were your greatest professional challenges along the way and how did you get past them? The toughest decision was to slow my career advancement to meet the demands of a new and growing family.
Bristol-Myers Squibb is a wonderful organization that was fully committed to my professional and personal development. The support I received and the continued professional development reassured me I not only made the right decision, but was also working for the right company.
What was your most important or favorite job before your current one? My work in oncology truly shaped me. I appreciate being part of bringing forward new therapeutic options to patients and their caregivers. The work we do demonstrates the importance of R&D and the responsibility commercial leaders have in creating strong brands.
What do people not “get” about working in pharma and healthcare? What are some of the misperceptions? That government or academic institutions are the only organizations in which important new drugs are discovered.
In fact, drug development at its core is a collaborative process across these groups and private industry. Many of our innovations at BMS come from within.
What’s one thing about pharma and healthcare you’d change if given the chance? I would like to have the opportunity, in some way, to thank the patients who participate in clinical trials. The service they provide for the broader population often goes unrecognized.
What were the most important, funny, or weird things you have learned over the course of your career? I often laugh at — and I am still struck by — how applicable many of the simple proverbs and aphorisms we learn early in life are to everyday business challenges. One of them, “There is no I in team,” has helped me build and be a part of innovative and successful teams. Many of these simple truths, when embodied and applied by leaders, can be culturally enhancing game changers.
Who were your inspirations and mentors, both professionally and personally? My greatest inspiration comes from my amazing father. He has been a teacher and a senior executive in the federal government, and is currently an entrepreneur. Through his modeling and leadership, I learned to have a strong work ethic, embrace failures as opportunities to learn, be passionate about one’s convictions, and give voice to what is right even when others are silent.
What is your biggest professional strength and how did you develop it? It’s rooted in my ability to lead high-performing teams. It is my experience that strong leaders are servants to the teams they are leading. Some of the best leaders I have worked for modeled the principles of servant leadership I embrace every day.
What advice would you give to others looking to get into the industry or move up the ranks? The best way to get into the industry is through sales. It allows future pharma executives to understand their customers and the tools used to communicate in a deep way.
I often lean on my learnings from working in primary and specialty sales, as I see the sales organization as a key stakeholder of the commercial function.
Leverne Marsh VP and U.S. head of respiratory franchise Novartis Time in the industry: 18 years
What was your original career goal, whether as a kid or right out of school? As a kid, I greatly admired the heroes in my family and community. I have always loved solving problems in the service of others.
What was your most important or favorite job before your current one? I learned so much by interning right after school. I still enjoy the widely different tasks assigned to me which, fortunately or not, resulted in my wide-ranging professional interests as my career progressed. My interning experiences were the start of an enduring professional curiosity.
Tumblr media
What was it about a career in healthcare and pharma that appealed to you? There is nothing better than work that can have a life-changing impact in the service of others.
What were your greatest professional challenges along the way and how did you get past them? Early in my career, I wasted time, energy, and opportunities in the pursuit of perfection. I learned striving for excellence is a much better pursuit.
Who were your inspirations and mentors, both professionally and personally? My parents inspired me with their perseverance, resilience, hope, and courage to push to do better. I was also inspired by Nelson Mandela, who was imperfect but compassionate, and a prodigious learner. Mandela changed the lives of millions of people through his courage to speak and act for justice.
What were the most important, funny, or weird things you have learned over the course of your career? Some of the most rewarding risks I have taken happened because I was delightfully naive to the consequences.
What advice would you give to others looking to get into the industry or move up the ranks? Everyone everywhere started in a role having no experience at least once in his or her career. If you have an interest or passion to grow in a new area, do not be intimidated by a lack of experience. Be curious, open-minded, and relentless about learning and growing.
June Lee, M.D. Chief development and operating officer MyoKardia Time in the industry: 14 years
What was your original career goal, whether as a kid or right out of school? I thought academic medicine might be an area for me to pursue. There were many different iterations along the way — I thought about being a bench scientist, asthmatologist, and clinical researcher. As a kid, I wanted to become a doctor to figure out how to treat a disease that ran in my family.
What was it about a career in healthcare and pharma that appealed to you? Very few careers have such a direct impact on people outside of healthcare. I’d been spending a lot of time pursuing independent research in the context of an academic career and came to realize the things we were discovering in the lab were being further developed in industry.
Tumblr media
I really wanted to do translational research and much of that was happening outside of academia.
What was your most important or favorite job before your current one? My role at University of California, San Francisco as director of translational research was really fun. It allowed me to bring many different facets of my career and training together in a space that no one had yet figured out. Getting to be part of a broader creative conversation in a very multidisciplinary, multisector sort of way to connect the dots between all of the different component parts and stakeholders, creatively problem solve, and build a template other institutions began to adopt was rewarding.
What was your “eureka” moment, when you realized you were in the right place professionally? Walking into Genentech and my first two weeks there. I realized my perspective in research and the knowledge of the care of these patients was incredibly valuable in the work of developing drugs. And I was doing this with an incredible team with distinct expertise, such as regulatory and pharmacology. I was learning as much as I was giving.
What were your greatest professional challenges and how did you get past them? Part of it was work-life balance. Figuring out how to be a parent of three in a two-career family and pursue an exciting and demanding career at the same time can be challenging.
What’s one thing about pharma and healthcare you’d change if given the chance? I’d like to see more female leadership at the highest levels. We’d have better decision-making. I believe in giving women with a lot of potential equal opportunity.
What advice would you give to others looking to get into the industry or move up the ranks? For getting into industry, be clear about why you want to be here. Start networking with people who can provide counsel on what it’s like to be in industry.
Finding the best point of entry doesn’t mean you end up with your ideal job. It may mean you’re in a role that provides exposure and training to open the door to the next opportunity.
Carrie Strom SVP of U.S. medical aesthetics Allergan Time in the industry: 18 years
What was your original career goal, whether as a kid or right out of school? As a kid I wanted to be the NBA’s first female referee. That’s a clear path from NBA referee to head of medical aesthetics, right?
What was your most important or favorite job before your current one? It’s a toss-up. I enjoyed serving as director of marketing for Lipitor, during which time I led the strategic planning for what was then the biggest revenue drug in pharma as it approached its loss of exclusivity. Additionally, I wouldn’t trade my time as a sales representative. There is no better career training than “carrying the bag” yourself.
Tumblr media
What was it about a career in healthcare and pharma that appealed to you? I saw how healthcare and medicine felt like a foreign language to my friends and family. During some of the biggest decisions of their lives, they felt confused and overwhelmed. I wanted to become an expert in as many therapeutic areas as possible to help improve health literacy so both healthcare providers and patients better understood their options.
What was your “eureka” moment, when you realized you were in the right place professionally? I loved my years as a sales rep in the field. But when I did a marketing rotation for three months at Pfizer’s New York City midtown headquarters, surrounded by subject matter experts and with the opportunity to drive brands at the national level, I knew I was a marketer for life.
What were your greatest professional challenges along the way and how did you get past them? In my 18 years in healthcare, I have worked in eight therapeutic areas. This created opportunities for me, but also challenges in terms of developing deep understanding of the markets, thought leaders, and brands. One thing that helped me manage this was going into the field and hearing directly from key customers and salespeople. Their observations helped me connect the dots much faster.
What do people not “get” about working in pharma and healthcare? What are some of the misperceptions? There is a massive underappreciation for how much information HCPs and patients have to process, and the role industry plays to bridge that gap. Our consumer comms can provide hope to patients or caregivers about treatment they didn’t know existed. Our HCP comms provide everything from medical education to hands-on training.
At one of our training sessions, an HCP told me he hadn’t had training like this since he was a resident. Knowledge is power.
What were the most important, funny, or weird things you have learned over the course of your career? In marketing, it’s tempting to apply your own viewpoint and bias. So, it’s good to remind ourselves we are not the target. I’ve never been a patient with high cholesterol or a urologist. This is why market research is important. Of course, now that I am leading Allergan’s medical aesthetics business, I am the target. It’s fun to use myself and my friends as a part of the market research.
What’s one thing about pharma and healthcare you’d change if given the chance? It’s all about the data. I would love to get more precise patient and consumer data so we can better meet their needs.
Who were your inspirations and mentors, both professionally and personally? I have a core group of friends who live similar lives as me: Our kids are the same age, both parents work and have careers in healthcare. They are my personal and professional inspiration. As one of them told me, “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back.”
What advice would you give to others looking to get into the industry or move up the ranks? Help make others successful and your success will follow. Give credit instead of taking it. Root for people instead of against them.
The best proof of a strong leader is when their direct reports become a peer or, even better, their boss one day.
Looking back, are there any career moves or decisions you’ve made for which you’d like a mulligan, so to speak? No, every career move has taught me something and introduced me to new people. I’m happy to say I wouldn’t change a thing.
Shontelle Dodson SVP, health systems Astellas Time in the industry: 20 years
What was your “eureka” moment, when you realized you were in the right place professionally? Early in my career, I had the privilege of working at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where I was able to address patients’ needs firsthand. Not only did I help them medically, but I also saw how important it was for patients to have a health advocate.
That feeling was revalidated when my grandmother was experiencing health challenges. I suspected one of her medications was contributing to her decline and personally advocated for her repeatedly to have this addressed. After some time, we finally convinced the physician to adjust her medication.
Tumblr media
What was your original career goal, whether as a kid or right out of school? When I started college, I planned on pursuing a career in accounting. But three weeks in, I realized accounting wasn’t for me.
During sorority rush, I met a friend in pre-pharmacy studies and decided to change my field. At the time, all I knew about pharmacy was that was where you picked up your prescriptions.
The friend who inspired me to switch is still a great friend today. I love my career and consider it divine intervention.
What do people not “get” about working in pharma and healthcare? What are some of the misperceptions?
That because we are a for-profit company, we have misaligned priorities. That is not at all true. Across the industry, there is amazing work happening to bring meaningful value to patients.
Working in the medical affairs organization, I see this great work firsthand, but too often the public does not.
For example, at Astellas we invest in a broad range of research — not just research tied to our products, but also to the diseases they treat.
Looking back, are there any career moves or decisions you’ve made for which you’d like a mulligan, so to speak? Very early in my career, I had a boss who wasn’t a good fit for me. I wanted to make a change but didn’t want to leave the company, so I interviewed for a different position within the organization. It was a sales position and I had never done sales before — which was very apparent during the interview. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t get the position.
The VP who interviewed me took the time afterward to provide feedback on why I wasn’t selected: “You have to seek opportunities that drive your passion, not to move away from something else.” At that point, I took full responsibility for my own development and made a commitment for ongoing professional growth.
What is your favorite city to visit for work, and why? Tokyo and New York City, because of their vibrancy, fast pace, and innovation.
What’s something unique you keep on or around your workspace? I have a lot of pictures of people I work with — pictures from team outings, our annual medical affairs awards event, and company charity events. We’ve become a “work family.”
