Charlie had just finished another workout. The clock struck 7am so he started packing up his bag. He clipped his ID badge back on his overalls, sticking a few pens in the bib slots for later.

"Later Danny! I got to get to the factory," Charlie shouted to his friend, who was still finishing some reps.

Danny was dressed in the same Carhartt overalls and hi-vis shirt. They had both been assigned to the same labor squadron, so the uniform was shared with the rest of the men in the gym.

"Leaving already? I thought shifts started at 8 today," Danny said between reps, as his pecs pushed out his bibs.

"Supervisor Gordon ordered me in early. Said it's for loyalty inspection," Charlie swung his bag over his shoulder.

"Ah gotcha," Danny responded. "I have my inspection next week. I won't keep you then. Glory to the Leader!"

Charlie gave a quick wave to his friend, "Glory to the Leader!" before leaving.

Charlie had been looking forward to graduating high school, but all of his plans changed with the new requirements mandating all men spend ages 18-25 working manual labor jobs to serve their country. Charlie was assigned to a manufacturing plant. He had to move into worker barracks, wear uniform overalls, and pledge loyalty to the Leader, a man Charlie once voted for president until he dissolved the government and installed himself as Leader.

It was a lot of change in one year, and Charlie was just old to know how different the country felt now. But slowly over the next year, Charlie started accepting things as normal. The overalls were actually pretty comfortable and definitely practical for his labor assignment. His work was monotonous, but fulfilling as he knew he was helping the country. And pledging loyalty to the Leader was a great way to bond and form community his fellow workers. He wasn't even paying lip service anymore, Charlie had become a true believer in the Leader's vision.

As Charlie boarded the transport from the barracks to the factory, he couldn't help but smile seeing the billboards of workers standing proudly in their overalls. The transport's radio played party news reporting on the Leader's most recent accomplishments. Charlie join the applause as the reporter announced introduced the new 7-day work week. Charlie couldn't believe he would get to serve his country and his Leader even more. His hands grabbed his overall straps as he smiled to himself and said "Glory to the Leader!"

When your boyfriend invited you on a vacation as a last-ditch effort to save your relationship, you hoped for a week filled with palm trees and tropical drinks. The very last place you expected to end up was the sleepy town of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The trip's intention was quickly forgotten as your relationship descended further into disrepair. Soon one fight became one too many and the relationship crumbled. Declaring that it would be best to go your separate ways, your boyfriend packed up and headed home.  Not yet ready to head back and face an empty home, you packed up and drove into the night. Having no particular destination except for the determination to enjoy your last night in Wyoming.

Setting your small bag down next to you, you slid into the seat of the bar just inside Wabang city limits. This week had been hard, and you needed a drink, preferably where someone you knew couldn't find you. Work had been stressing you out bad enough, but the constant fighting and lack of romance between you and your (now ex) boyfriend had all but tipped you over the edge.

You signaled for the bartender, asking for the strongest liquor they had. You knew you'd regret this, but at this point, you really didn’t care. You needed this, to get drunk, to forget everything happening in your life right now, or more specifically, who was almost certainly camping outside your door just to start one last fight. The bartender slipped the glass onto the counter and you rolled your shoulders back in preparation for the languid swig you were going to take of whatever was in the glass. Only moments later tears were brimming the corners of your eyes and a sharp burn was rising in your throat.

You remained seated at the bar until you all but lost track of time. Not because you particularly liked it there, but because it was delaying the inevitable. You nursed your lone drink for what had to be hours, but eventually, you set the empty glass down and turned to take in your surroundings for the first time that night. There were six or seven people at the bar, yourself and the bartender included. Your eyes drifted to a busy dance floor directly behind you. There was a gaggle of 20-something men in a variety of western wear paired up with their pick of cowgirl-boot-wearing women. The music from the jukebox had mellowed out as the night went on, now playing old country classics while an older couple waltzed slowly in the corner. Taking in all the sights of the bar, your eyes soon drifted back to your immediate surroundings. More specifically a silhouette down the bar from you. Squinting slightly in the dim light, you tried to focus on the features of the stranger. He was slightly older and leaning into the counter in front of him with no drink in sight. A soft brown hat with a high crown sat solemnly on the bar top next to him You couldn't see much of his face due to the lighting, though you could see the hint of well-groomed facial hair laced across his features. From there, your eyes began to go down his body. Despite his assumed age, he was broader and more muscular than the men you were usually around. A Carhartt coat a few shades lighter than his hat sat upon his sturdy frame. It was paired with a simple shirt and jeans. As well as a pair of boots in the style you’ve come to associate with this town. Diverting your eyes back to yourself, you couldn’t help the slight heat that flushed you as you admired him from afar. You only flushed more as your mind noted how, even in low light, the outfit complimented his features perfectly.

From what you could tell the man was signaling that he wanted to be left alone, a feeling you understood all too well. Maybe it was the alcohol, the new atmosphere, or that old cowboy charm, but something about him drew you in. Fighting this revelation, you went back to your previous activity. Now ordering a different, much fruitier drink, from the man behind the bar. Sliding a ten across the bar, you couldn’t shake the urge to look over at the man who had yet to so much as glance your way. You had already decided you'd been staring at him for far too long and didn't want to make him any more uncomfortable. Instead, you settled for sending a short glance every so often, wishing you weren't too shy to walk up and introduce yourself.

Even later on, the bar crowd had thinned out. Leaving you and a few other patrons scattered around the bar. after figuring that there was nothing better to do, you struck up a half-hearted conversation with the bartender. The conversation was nothing to write home about, and you honestly weren’t really even paying attention. The sound of a wood stool scraping against the floor signaled that the stranger you'd been admiring was leaving. As your conversation started to fade, you went back to your drink once more, hoping a slow sip on the orange concoction would drown out the bitterness of a missed opportunity.

Contemplating your own exit, you pulled your wallet out to leave a small tip on the bar. Turning on the stool to leave, you noticed that the man had returned and was now seated firmly next to you. Rethinking your departure you could feel the man's sharp stare in your direction. The heat from before rises to your cheeks again. Peeling his eyes from you he called the bartender over and ordered a beer. His new position finally lets you examine him closer. From the little you knew about this place, he wasn't the standard type of patron this establishment hosted. He was older and honestly looked like he just walked out of some Clint Eastwood movie. Blue and red lights from the neon sign overhead danced across his silhouette. The shirt and jacket you noticed earlier fit him perfectly, concealing the muscular frame only a man who’s spent his life working on the plains has. His arm brushed past you when he reached forward to accept his drink. Even through his clothing, you could feel the warmth radiating off him and leaving you with a strangely comforting effect.

Deciding now was the chance you’d been waiting on, You turned to face him and finally introduce yourself.

You learned that his name was Royal, that he was far from the bar-going type but his sons told him that occasionally getting away from their ranch would do him well, his drink order was simply “something domestic”, and that despite his somewhat gruff appearance his blue-green eyes held nothing but kindness and cognizance.

You also learned he’s a man of few words. Despite this conversation flowed naturally with Royal, a name that was currently etching itself into your brain. Time seemed to both slow and fly as you sat with him. You could hear the faint tune of a song playing from the jukebox in the background, still entranced with the man next to you. Soon you were left in comfortable silence, hearts full and bashfulness on your faces. Cutting the silence, he cleared his throat before speaking.

"may I ask you to dance?"

You nodded graciously, getting up from the stool you'd been on all night. Royal led you to the dance floor with a gentle touch before placing one hand on your mid back and another on the small of your back. Your arms naturally snaked around his neck. Instantly you relaxed. His touch was nothing but safety and comfort. Your head rested on his chest right next to his heart, swaying softly in time with the music.

As the song made its way to its chorus, you melted solely into the rumble in his chest as he hummed along lowly.

Anyway here’s what he needs to wear if he’s gonna be in a stereotypical old farmer get up from someone who lives in a stereotypical farmer get up community and sees this at least once a week from multiple men:

A plaid button up shirt. Specifically blue. Sometimes other colors but 9 times outta 10, they’re in blue. In the summer it’s long sleeves too. It doesn’t matter if it’s 110. They’re wearing long sleeve shirts and jeans.

Overalls. These old men LOVE their overalls. Typically they say the name of a feed store on them. The overalls are mostly light blue because they’ve been washed a lot.

If they’re not in overalls then it’s dark wash blue jeans and suspenders. I don’t know why but again old farmers love ‘em. The suspenders never match the shirts exactly.

Mud boots. The only thing these old farmers love more than overalls is mud boots. On Sundays you might find them donning their nice cowboy boots to go to church but mostly they’ve got the mud boots on. Specifically black mud boots. Their cowboy boots are mostly the tall brown basic leather ones.

A feed store hat or a ___ livestock hat. They’ve gotta be a baseball cap. Bonus points if it’s dirty. Old farmers always have some kind of baseball cap on. Typical colors are green black and red brim and front part with a white mesh like back.

If it’s winter time they might don the brown thick Carhartt coats. These things are the most warmest things I’ve ever worn. They hold so much heat in. I have a pair of carhartt coveralls from the feed store that i wear in the winter and they’ve seen better days for sure but I love them. Bonus points if the sleeves have a few holes specifically around the band by where your hands go.

I'm convinced that companies just don't make good overalls for women both carhartt and dickies women's overalls have shit reviews (too large, thin fabric, ect) and the men's ones are too big. Genuinely a women's xs from dickies would not fit me. On people 4 inches taller than me it's 5 inches too long. Men's definitely would not fit me. I'm looking into carhartt's children's sizes it's that bad. I just want some good fucking workwear for robotics that's not my salmon pink coveralls. I also want beige or black. I very desperately promise I'm not insane I just want overalls. I don't think kid's sizes have those little loops for hammers either :(

Jake, Samuel, and Aiden had been best friends since kindergarten. They have always done everything together. So of course after they graduated they hoped to get the same labor assignment. It was a long shot though, as the mandated manual labor program could place them at farms, factories, and work sites anywhere across the state.

The best buds were hanging around one the summer after graduation, only a week away from receiving their labor assignments.

"Man, I hope I get assigned to a work farm," said Jake, in the light blue flannel and black Carhartt overalls. "I love working outside."

"Me too," said Samuel, in the dark blue flannel and matching black Carhartts. "I always did well in our Agricultural Studies class." School curricula had changed a lot since the Overalls for All Act, with boys being required to take several vocational courses to prepare them for a life of manual labor.

"I don't get want I get assigned," Aiden, in the red flannel and dark brown overalls, said glumly. "I just want to get assigned with you guys."

Samuel put a comforting hand on Aiden's shoulder, "I hope so too, Aiden. But it's no guarantee. It's not up to us to choose our assignment."

"I know, I know. We have to obey what our leaders tell us. Believe me, I trust in their wisdom and leadership," Aiden said. "But we've always been together. I don't know if I go for two years of assigned labor without you guys."

Jake came over and placed a hand on Aiden's bib. "Dude, even if we are separated, we'll still be united in our overalls! That's why our leaders have us wear them. All men are united through our uniform, our labor, and our obedience to our leaders!"

Aiden felt a swell of pride in his chest as he placed his hand on Jake's bib. "You are totally right Jake! Overalls for All has made our country a better place. As long as we obey and wear our overalls, we'll always be together!" Aiden then placed both hands on his overalls straps, a standard salute, "Overalls for All!"

Jake and Samuel returned the gesture and said in unison, "Overalls for All!"

The young men had learned well in school to trust the new systems put in place. Their leaders had tirelessly worked to ensure all men have a future as long as they trust and obey the leader's policies. Overalls for All as one of the most sweeping and historic pieces of legislation in the country's history, but it's success had been even more monumental, with men across the country embracing their uniform overalls and labor requirements.

The friends would receive their assignments a week later and alas they did not receive the same assignment. Jake was indeed assigned to a work farm where he spent each day cleaning the pigsty, a dirty job he was honored to carry out. Samuel was assigned to a factory, helping manufacture products that would serve the whole country. And finally, Aiden was assigned to a construction site, helping build a new civic center that would offer the newly required masculinity courses that male citizens were mandated to take. But whenever Aiden, or Jake or Samuel, missed their old friends, all he had to was salute with both hands on his straps and say, full of masculine pride and conviction, "Overalls for All", and he knew somewhere out there his friends were doing the same.
