Terri Lyne Carrington Curates Carr Center & Midtown Detroit Jazz Crawl October 14th-28th

Terri Lyne Carrington is the curator of The Carr Center and Midtown Detroit's Jazz Crawl on October 14-28th. The New Standards Jazz Crawl, Shifting The Narrative: Jazz and Gender Justice kicks off its inaugural series of free concerts at eight of the city's cultural and educational institutions this month. Carrington, who is also a Grammy-winning jazz drummer and composer is among the list of performers that includes vocalists Lisa Fischer, Carmen Lundy, Jazzmeia Horn, Lizz Wright, Daryn Dean, and Charenée Wade, saxophonists Tia Fuller, Nicole Glover, and Camille Thurman, bassists Linda May Han Oh and Marian Hayden, pianists Andy Milne and Paul Cornish, drummers Susie Ibarra and Savannah Harris, flutist Nicole Mitchell, percussionist JoVia Armstrong, guitarist Matthew Stevens, and The Gathering Orchestra Nonet. 

The Jazz Crawl is part of The Carr Center's yearlong 30th-anniversary celebration and the opening of the new Carr Center performance studio. Oliver Ragsdale Jr. President and CEO of The Carr Center says, “The opening of the Performance Studio is the pinnacle of our anniversary celebration. As we move closer to the opening, we are honored to work closely with partners Midtown Detroit Inc., and our Artistic Director Terri Lyne Carrington, who is not only expanding her artistry with compelling publications, visual arts, and film, but she continues to provide high-level and innovating programming and is a great collaborator for the Carr Center." 

The New Standards Installation opens on October 14th and is a four-part interdisciplinary look at jazz through the lens of gender equality. There are works created by jazz artists Cécile McCLorin Salvant, Carmen Lundy and Jazzmeia Horn and contributions from visual artists Monica Haslip, Joe Diggs, Yesmin Tosuner and Ramsess. Sherry Rubel has a portrait of 30 influential women instrumentalists and Lizz Wright will present a recipe inspired by the New Standards theme. 

Carrington's first-ever children's book Three Of A Kind will be introduced. The story revolves around the musical partnership of comprised of Carrington, the late Geri Allen, and Esperanza Spalding (ACS Trio). The book is written by Carrington, illustrated by Ramsess and designed to inspire young women to play instruments. The installation also includes a New Standards film documenting the creators, and the purpose of the book and album. 

On Friday, October 14th the Carr Center will present a panel discussion, “Jazz and Gender: Forging a New Legacy” with scholar and cultural icon Angela Davis; and educators and authors Gina Dent and Robin D.G. Kelly, along with Carrington at the Carr Center Performance Studio.

On Saturday, October 15, the Carr Center will present a Professional Development Master Class with Carrington for band directors and band leaders to engage with her and other composers featured in her new book.

Carrington has promoted equality in the arts since founding the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice in 2018. Last month the Berklee Press debuted her book New Standard: 101 Lead Sheets By Women Composers. The book brings light to compositions not usually thought of as jazz standards from composers like Lil' Hardin Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, Dorothy Ashby, Dianne Reeves, Geri Allen, Cécile McClorin Salvant, Maria Schneider, Cassandra Wilson, Nubya Garcia, Esperanza Spalding, Mary Halvorson, Nicole Mitchell and the recently departed Jamie Branch. 

In addition to the book, Carrington's new STANDARDS vol.1 album was just released.

DETROIT – The Carr Center in Detroit stands as a beacon, uniquely dedicated to amplifying the Black art experience.However, CEO Oliver Ragsdale Jr. said the decades-old institution has come on hard times

“We’re struggling,” Ragsdale said. “We’re coming out of the same kinds of challenges that many other organizations and businesses felt coming out of the pandemic.

Fundraising is down. People coming to live performances isn’t what it used to be.”The Carr Center is one of the leading multi-disciplinary Black arts presenters in the country.

“As a visual artist, it was the place for me to meet, and collaborate, and work in tandem with those who do those things,” Sabrina Nelson said.“It’s a place where artists can come together to have performances as well as conversations,” poet Melba Joyce Boyd said.

According to the center, the initial need is to raise up to $700,000 to address the debt and complete the construction of The Carr Center Performance Studio.

A Dumb Draft Exercise

It's a Friday night and we're all locked in so I decided to do something a touch different. I took the current NFL draft order and then looked up the last five NFL drafts (2015-2019) to see who was picked at spots. Using the teams as they stand after one long (and it feels it) week of free agency, I picked ONE player selected at that set position to try and do a retro draft. Each team picked ONE player picked over the last five years at that specific spot (so at 1 overall, you could only draft 1st overall). How different would your favorite team look? Welll.....

1. Cincinnati- QB Kyler Murray (2019)

The first round picks of the past five years consist of four QBs (Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield and Murray) alongside premiere edge rusher Myles Garrett. As is often the case with top pick QBs tasked with saving bad franchises, each becomes less and less attractive as the years go by and they hit the ceiling of "damn good but not quite franchise saver" over and over. I went with Murray because while I think Goff is vastly underrated by most fans, Murray's got the ability and personality to drastically change an organization that feels like it's been hankering for a chance over the past five years. Murray was one of the NFL's brightest stars last year and figures to only improve, especially if you put him under the watchful gaze of an offensive guru (of sorts) in Zac Taylor.

2. Washington- DE Nick Bosa (2019)

Was REALLY torn with Carson Wentz and Nick Bosa for the Redskins. There's a lot of dead-ish weight here with Mitch Trubisky and Marcus Mariota and while Saquon may be the best player in theory, no team needs to take a running back in the top 5 (or in the first round at all). Assuming the Redskins are truly comfortable with Dwayne Haskins then taking Nick Bosa and pairing him up in the front four along with the likes of Montez Sweat, Matt Ionidis and Daron Payne would probably be a formidable ass crew.  Basically the Chase Young strategy.

3. Detroit- DE Joey Bosa (2016)

How about the Bosa Bros going back to back! One would assume tht if the Lions wanted a QB, they're GOING to have their pick of the proverbial litter on the back end. After all after Cincy, they'll have Tua, Herbert and Love at their disposal if taking a QB so amuses them. Instead operating under the belief that the Lions feel comfortable with Stafford for MAYBE one more year, it leaves us to choose from Joey Bosa, Solomon Thomas and Dante Fowler. Bosa is likely on his way to a multiple pro bowl career while Thomas may just grade out as average and Fowler is on his third team now. Easy choice if ya ask me.

4. NY Giants- WR Amari Cooper (2015)

The Giants would be picking from a variety of offensive players; two of which are current Dallas Cowboys. You have Amari Cooper, Zeke Elliott, Leonard Fournette on offense and then Denzel Ward at cornerback as pretty much your only other option. Give me Amari Cooper as he'd immediately step in and make an offense consisting of Daniel Jones, Barkley, Golden Tate and a two tight end threat of Evan Engram and Kaden Smith a pretty damn formidable one.

5. Miami- OLB Bradley Chubb (2018)

This WOULD be easy in theory. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey would've been a FINE choice here but the Dolphins have Xavien Howard and Byron Jones on the back end. With Jalen Ramsey out of the picture, you have an interesting linebacker in Devin White, a superb guard in Brandon Scherff and my selection Bradley Chubb. With so much locked in on the defense, Chubb (if healthy) steps in as an immediate premiere pass rusher. Barely edges out Brandon Scherff. BARELY.

6. LA Chargers- OG Quinton Nelson (2018)

Man! The Chargers would have their glut of talent to choose from if they so desired. Want an elite strong safety? Jamal Adams was picked 6th in 2018. Want a QB to groom and develop? Daniel Jones went here in 2019. If you want a flexible havoc inducing DL piece? Leonard Williams in 2015 went 6th overall. Ronnie Stanley is a pretty damn good tackle as well.  Quinton Nelson is a top 3 guard in just two seasons and figures to continue to improve. It's not a premiere position for a lot of people but Nelson bucks the trend.

7. Carolina- QB Josh Allen (2018)

Funny bit? We have two Josh Allens here as Josh Allen from Wyoming and Josh Allen from Kentucky both went 7th overall. Both would be tremendous picks given the Panthers needs (an elite edge or a QB). Deforest Buckner finally hit on his potential and got paid paid for it as well, fitting in interestingly here as a potential flexible front line piece. The Panthers just paid Teddy Bridgewater relatively big time money but if you have the chance to take a really athletic strong armed QB who has shown strides in two seasons, you should do it. Imagine Allen throwing it to the likes of DJ Moore and Christian McCaffery.

8. Arizona- RB Christian McCaffery (2017)

THIS one was hard given the lack of obvious options. Do you need more receiving options? If so TE TJ Hockenson was picked 8th. Christian McCaffery is probably the best player at this spot but again, running backs and top 10s and etc etc etc. Nuke Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk are on paper a superb trio of WRs and you also have Kenyan Drake at RB. Vic Beasley is a good pass rusher who has sort of lost his way as a player (hence the one year prove it deal). Give me McCaffery I guess. I think he'd do wonders in Kingbsury's offense and I suppose you can make he and Drake work together. That's why head coaches get paid.

9. Jacksonville- OT Mike McGlinchey (2018)

There's not a lot of obvious fits for a tanking team like the Jaguars. DT Ed Oliver would be intriguing but I have no idea how he fits in with the Jaguars defense. The likes of Leonard Floyd (recently released), Ereck Flowers (failed tackle turned kinda failed guard), John Ross (oft injured speedster) are other options. Lastly there's Mike McGlinchey who was starting at right tackle for the Super Bowl 49ers. The Jaguars have spent picks at both tackle spots but McGlinchey is better.

10. Cleveland- QB Patrick Mahomes (2017)

Fuck. Would the Browns even with Baker Mayfield flirt with taking Patrick Mahomes? Who cares. Mayfield can be traded. If you have the chance to grab the best QB in the NFL, you do it. Easy peasy.

11. NY Jets- CB Marshon Lattimore (2016)

This one came down to Lattimore or Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick can do so much across a secondary and his swiss army knife toolset was amplified in a Pittsburgh secondary that left to his devices where he could roam free and fuck shit up. On the other hand, Marshon Lattimore represents one of the NFL's rare commodities; a star shutdown cornerback. Plus with Marcus Maye and Jamal Adams tie up the safety spots pretty well.

12. Las Vegas- QB Deshaun Watson (2017)

The Raiders are openly flirtatious with moving on from Derek Carr. Deshaun Watson would step in and be a massive upgrade. There's also not much here either given how 90% of the players are DL and the Raiders have plenty of names and faces they like there. Maxx Crosby, Maliek Collins, John Hankins and Clelin Ferrell to name a few.

13. San Francisco f/IND- OG Laremy Tunsil (2016)

Take the 49ers OL with Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey and Laken Tomlinson and then slide in Laremy Tunsil at RG. That's an absurd OL. There also weren't many options to really delve into either depending on how you feel about Da'Ron Payne and Vita Vea.

14. Tampa Bay- DE Marcus Davenport (2018)

Pick 14 over the past five years is a bit of a dry spell unfortunately. The best player on the list is DeVante Parker and the Bucs clearly have a collection of damn good WRs. Shaq Barrett and JPP are in place for 2020 but could the Bucs use Davenport as a third rusher and move him inside on pass rush downs. Not a lot of good ideas here unfortunately.

15. Denver- RB Melvin Gordon (2015)

Easy peasy! I mean Denver just signed him! That's a bit of a cheapie but let's keep with it. Gordon fitshere (and nobody else does).

16. Atlanta- LB Tremaine Edmunds (2018)

Edmunds with Deion Jones? Sign me up! The only other option that makes sense here is Marlon Humphrey at corner which would be an equally fine pick.

17. Dallas- S Derwin James (2018)

Given that Arik Armstead and John Allen would be 3-technique types in this defense, it makes sense we would ONCE again look at the safety market! Yay! The Cowboys scheme in 2018 apparently didn't like Derwin James as much as the media thought they did but this is a brand new scheme and a new way to play. Derwin James would edge out Keanu Neal (who BTW when healthy is an amazing safety) by virtue of being more of the chess piece the Cowboys need.

18. Miami f/PIT- C Ryan Kelly (2017)

Again there's a glut of corners here but the Dolphins have their fair share. As such, turn your attention over to a glut of centers---who they also just signed a guy for. Ryan Kelly is a pro bowl center though and you can make exceptions for that.

19. Las Vegas f/CHI- LB Leighton Vander-Esch (2018)

One of the better linebackers in the NFL prior to his neck injury, LVE was a friggin' elite athlete who could still redefine what NFL linebackers look like. His defensive coordinator is there as well (as the DL coach) and I bet Gruden would love his leadership and his ability as an off ball linebacker. This one is easy enough.

20. Jacksonville f/LAR- TE Noah Fant (2019)

The Jaguars are in the midst of a rebuild of sorts but unfortunately there's no immediate building block pieces at 20. It came down to Frank Ragnow (a versatile OL with upside) or Noah Fant and I opted for tight end Noah Fant since Minshew could use a reliable safety blanket. Assuming Fant can control his drops of course.

21. Philadelphia- WR Will Fuller (2016)

The Eagles could REALLY use some targets for Carson Wentz. Last year in clutch games they were relying on JJ Arceaga-Whiteside and Boston Scott for targets outside of their tight ends. Wouldn't have a problem going with FS Darnell Savage either who also went at 21.

22. Minnesota f/BUF- DE Bud Dupree (2015)

I don't know if the Vikings NEED an edge but even if they don't, there's really no options here. Josh Doctson was a flop in Washington, Charles Harris was a flop in Miami, Rashaan Evans plays the same spot as their glut of damn good linebackers and Andre Dillard is an unproven tackle for Philly to this point. Hit or miss here.

23. New England- Isaiah Wynn (2018)

I mean they drafted him here. Easy enough. Although would they take TE Evan Engram all things being equal?

24. New Orleans- WR DJ Moore (2018)

The Saints did grab Emmanuel Sanders but DJ Moore, Sanders and Michael Thomas is a whole different world of WR depth. There's also pretty much nobody else here worthy of snagging either.

25. Minnesota- WR Marquise Brown (2019)

HOLLYWOOD! The Vikings just traded away Stefon Diggs and could use an infusion of playmaker at their WR spot to help assist their TE room, Dalvin Cook and Adam Thielen. Marquise Brown would give Kirk Cousins a souped up version of Jamison Crowder; a WR-3 he relied heavily on in Washington.

26. Miami f/HOU- DE Montez Sweat (2019)

So the Dolphins have signed a lot of DE and we also gave them Bradley Chubb earlier BUT Montez Sweat is going to terrorize the NFL for the next 5-10 years and so he and Chubb combined? That's big time pass rush. Also, again, not much to really select from here either.

27. Seattle- CB Byron Jones (2015)

If you drew up a make and model for a Seahawks DB? It looks like Byron Jones. Byron just got paid big time money by Miami It's Byron vs Tre White and Byron fits the mold a bit better. Could also see Seattle liking Kenny Clark. Lots of good defensive players at 27.

28. Baltimore- OG Laken Tomlinson (2015)

Let Tomlinson battle it out with the interior OL the Ravens have currently. There's really not much here, it's either Tomlinson or DT Jerry Tillery.

29. Tennessee- TE David Njoku (2017)

Funny story, the 2016 1st round pick here was forfeited via deflategate. With just four names to choose from (and not really much to talk about either way), the Titans take David Njoku. Njoku has struggled with his role in Cleveland and the Titans do have some solid tight ends already in place but Njoku would be a pretty nice flier. Most of the guys here at 29 are just not good unless you're a Taven Bryan truther.

30. Green Bay- LB TJ Watt (2017)

And Cowboys fans across the globe shudder in horror. Yes, the Packers have two really good DEs in the Smith brothers. There's nobody else here who comes remotely close to the pure value TJ Watt has. Let him rush from the left side and rack up the sacks. You can figure it out somehow I figure. Let Preston Smith play 3-tech or something!

31. San Francisco- LB Reuben Foster (2017)

On one hand, the less said about Foster the better. On the other, there's really nobody else here who would come close. Unless you're a Germaine Ifedi fan?

32. Kansas City- DT Malcolm Brown (2015)

For any other team in any other league, this is Lamar Jackson. The Chiefs are really set at QB for the next 10-15 years so we'll have to take a pass. Instead Malcolm Brown is pretty much the only other really good value play. Big thumpy 1-tech/nose tackles are usually found later on in the draft but Brown is a good one and the Chiefs truthfully don't need much else either.

Matt Cardona vs Alex Shelley

Matt Cardona, and his paramore Chelsea Green, pretty much weren’t very popular anywhere MPW goes, but maybe even more so than usual tonight, in Detroit, Michigan, standing across the ring from Detroit’s favorite son, Alex Shelley. Shelley was enjoying his usual reception amongst the Detroit crowd, and it was clearly upsetting Matt Cardona, much in the way Matt Cardona always gets upset when he feels he’s not receiving the respect he feels he deserves. 

Steve Guy stood in the center of the ring for the formal ring introductions that usually accompanied an MPW big match, but Steve was suddenly shoved out of the way by Alex Shelley, who blew right past both him and referee Jessica Carr and began hammering away at Matt Cardona in the corner! Jessica Carr called for the bell, and retrieved the Internet Championship that had fallen to the wayside as Matt was attacked, and our main event bout was underway here! Alex Shelley hammers away at the champion, blasting him with forearm after forearm, already putting Matt Cardona on wobbly legs here! Matt was the much, much larger of the two men, but for perhaps the very first time here in MPW, he DIDN’T have the experience advantage! In fact, there might be no one on earth currently still wrestling who could claim an experience advantage over Alex Shelley! Despite his usual veteran level headedness though, Shelley took a moment after knocking Matt down to let out a shout of frustration, as the entire Detroit crowd here in the Harpos Theater were on their feet! Alternating chants of “AL-EX SHELLEY!” and “FUCK CARDONA” were practically shaking the walls of this building, as our MPW fans were FIRED UP! 

Shelley went back to retrieve Matt, picking him up and nailing him with another forearm, before dragging him out of the corner, but Matt fired back with a knee to the gut, doubling Shelley over, before blasting Shelley with a forearm of his own. Shelley stumbled against the ropes, and Matt grabbed him and sent them off them, but when Shelley hit the ropes on the other side of the ring, Shelley grabbed hold and stopped himself! Matt charged at Shelley, looking to take him out, but Shelley pulled down the ropes and sent Matt tumbling over the top rope and down to the floor! Philly Collins and Marino Tengaila rushed over to check on Matt and help him to get back to his feet, but before any of them realized what was happening, Alex Shelley was on the top rope, and dove off, flying through the air with a beautiful Moonsault that took out all three men! Chelsea screamed, watching her husband and his lackeys get taken out! Shelley rolled back into the ring and waited for Matt to start to stir, before running off the ropes, diving out of the ring, and taking out Matt again with a low suicide dive! Matt’s back was driven right into the barricade! Shelley got back to his feet and got right back up in Matt’s face, blasting him with a continued series of forearm shots, knocking the champion for a loop! Shelley dragged him over to a less densely populated area of fans, before grabbing Matt by the head, and flipping over him with Sliced Bread, landing on his feet on the other side of the barricade and driving Matt’s back down into the top of the steel guardrail! Matt stumbled away, holding his back and crying out in agony, gritting his teeth as he turned back around to face his attacker. This proved to be a mistake, as Shelley had leaped up onto the guardrail, and had been waiting for Matt to turn around, before he dove off of it, grabbed Matt, and planted Matt with a Tornado DDT on the concrete outside of the ring! Matt got spiked right on top of his head! 

Shelley got back up and shook the guardrail, getting our MPW fans even more fired up! This match had been practically all Shelley from the very beginning, and he wasn’t looking to slow up any time soon! Shelley grabbed Matt and tossed him back into the ring, before starting to dig around under the ring. Weapons were a rarity in Alex Shelley’s matches, but a veteran like Shelley knew, perhaps almost better than anyone, when they were a necessity- and there were few greater necessities in MPW right now than causing Matt Cardona as much pain and suffering as possible. Shelley grabbed two chairs and slid them into the ring, before he went back underneath, and pulled out a door to go along with them! The crowd, bloodthirsty as always, popped for the sight of the door. It’s a good thing Heyman gets these doors wholesale, because our fans might go nuts if we didn’t break at least five of them per show. Shelley slid the door into the ring and watched as Matt got back to his feet. Shelley charged Matt with a Rolling Elbow, but Matt ducked it and sent Shelley off the ropes, on the rebound Matt leaping up and catching Alex Shelley with a HUGE Dropkick, catching Shelley right in the face and dropping him! 

Matt pulled himself up to a knee, and smirked out at the crowd here in Detroit, a crowd that absolutely detested him, a crowd that would have no qualms about pelting Matt with garbage or hitting him with their car after the show. He knew it, and by god, he loved it. Matt grabbed Shelley by the hair and lifted him back up, before whipping Shelley into the corner. Matt charged in after him and crushed Shelley with a running forearm, dropping Alex Shelley in the corner, before taking a few steps, measuring, and nearly taking Alex Shelley’s head off with a Broski Boot! Cardona follows it up with a massive vertical suplex! Matt might be damn near the strongest man in MPW, easily able to toss other competitors across the ring with little to no effort. Matt even took a moment to flex, taunting the crowd even further, before he began stalking around the downed Shelley. Matt took the heel of his foot and grinded it on the forehead of Shelley, before raking it away, nearly leaving treadmarks across Shelley’s forehead. Matt took another moment to gloat and play to the crowd, pretending like he couldn’t hear them as chants of “FUCK CARDONA” continued to get louder and louder the more Matt egged them on. By now, Philly and Marino were also back to their feet, and also joining in on getting the crowd more riled up with their senseless taunting. Matt turned back to the task at hand finally and grabbed Shelley, but Shelley, ever the veteran, was prepared and put his head right under Matt’s chin before catching him with a jawbreaker!

Matt was sent stumbling backwards, holding his jaw, as Shelley got back to his feet. Shelley measured Matt, and charged in, but Matt suddenly tossed Shelley up in the air for a backdrop, driving Shelley down to the mat! Matt dropped down and shoved Shelley back down to the mat, pressing his full body weight on Shelley for the cover!

1….2… Kickout!

Alex Shelley, ever the resilient veteran, stays alive! Matt ran a hand through his hair, and sighed to himself, frustrated this match wasn’t already over. Matt got back to his feet and picked up one of the chairs that had been tossed into the ring earlier, and sauntered back over to Shelley, before taking the point of the chair and driving it right into Shelley’s ribs! Shelley cried out in pain once again, as Matt then held the chair propper and lifted it up, before swinging it down and cracking it over Shelley’s back! Shelley this time let out and even louder cry of agony, as cold steel met his already aching spine. Matt opened the chair up and set it up over on the other side of the ring, before grabbing the other chair and setting it up across from it. Matt then grabbed Shelley by the hair again, dragging him over to the chairs. Matt dragged Shelley up and quite forcefully sat Shelley in one of the chairs, before Matt took a seat across from him, and scooted his chair up so they were closer. Matt began to lean in, taunting Shelley. 

“C’mon Shelley. C’mon old man. I’ll give you the first fuckin’ shot. Hit me. Hit me you fuckin’ loser. Hit me you indie scumbag!” 

That seemed to be all it took, as Shelley suddenly wound up and popped Matt in the jaw with a straight right hand! Matt was dazed for a moment, and went to fire back, but Shelley didn’t let him! Shelley popped Matt again, right in the mouth! And again! And again! There would be no exchange of blows, Alex Shelley was hammering away at Matt Cardona with rapid fire right hands, giving him everything he had! Matt was fading quick, and Shelley took the opening to stand up, fold up his chair, and chuck it right at Matt’s head! Matt’s head snapped back as steel collided with skull, and Matt fell right out of his chair! Shelley was once again up and firing on all cylinders, setting the chairs back up and placing the door between them, before grabbing Matt Cardona and laying him across the door! Shelley climbed up to the top rope, before leaping off and putting Matt through the door with a double stomp! The door broke right in half, and Matt might have too! Shelley covered!

1….2…. Kickout!

Matt stays alive! Shelley grabbed Matt again, and dragged him up to his feet, trying to set Matt up for Shell Shock, but Matt managed to shove Shelley off. Shelley stumbled but caught himself, and turned right around to charge Matt again, but Matt was ready and caught Shelley, before lifting him up and driving Shelley into the mat with a Michunoku Driver! Matt followed that up by rolling right to the outside, and digging under the ring, looking for and finding another table, tossing that up into the ring. Matt took a moment to jaw jack with some fans, before turning back around, and sliding back into the ring. Matt cleared the ring of the other door, and placed the new one on top of the chairs, making another makeshift table. Matt took a moment to catch his breath, before he marched back over to Shelley, lifting him back up, and popping him with another forearm to stun him. Matt then whipped Shelley into the corner again, and caught him with yet another huge forearm, crushing the much smaller man with his full mass. Matt then lifted Shelley up to the top rope, and quickly climbed up himself, before lifting Shelley up and driving him through the table below with a massive Superplex! Shelley might have just been broken in half! Matt Cardona floated over on the cover, and hooked Shelley’s leg!

1...2…. Matt picks Shelley’s shoulder up! 

Matt just picked Shelley’s shoulder up! Matt apparently wasn’t done with Shelley! This could be a mistake, when you have a veteran like Shelley down, you gotta take advantage of that and go for the win! Matt soaked in the boos from the crowd, and laughed as he lifted Shelley back to his feet, before he charged Shelley, leaped up, and crushed him with Radio Silence! Now Matt made another cover!

Shelley kicks out of Radio Silence! Shelley manages to stay alive! The wily veteran wasn’t down and out yet! Matt couldn't believe it! 

Matt huffed in frustration, grinding his teeth and flaring his nostrils, wanting this match to be over with. Shelley perhaps was providing a bigger challenge than Matt expected tonight, and Matt looked exhausted. Either way, Matt got back to his feet and grabbed Shelley again, once again grabbing him and trying to hook his arms for some sort of Underhook, but Shelley spun out of it, hooked Matt around the head, before planting him with Shell Shock! Matt’s head was spiked down onto the mat! Shelley covered!

This time it was Matt’s turn to kick out of his opponent's finish! Shelley pounded the mat in frustration, but knew that if he wanted to take down Matt, he’d need a bigger bang. Shelley decided on perhaps just about the biggest bang he had. 

Shelley lifted Matt back up and whipped him into the corner, before charging in and nailing Matt with a running forearm. Shelley lifted Matt up to the top rope, before beginning to climb up there with him. Shelley adjusted himself so that he could get a hook of Matt’s head from the top rope, perhaps looking for a top rope variant of Sliced Bread, but as he tries to set up, Chelsea climbs up onto the top rope! Shelley, thinking quickly, readjusts himself, and manages to kick Chelsea off the apron, but that ends up leaving Shelley open as Cardona goes low on him! Cardona nails Shelley with a low blow, before shoving Shelley down off the top rope! Cardona gets to his feet, standing high on the top rope as the boos increase, flipping off Shelley one last time before crushing him with a top rope Radio Silence! Cardona hooks the leg!

Patrice Rushen To Debut New Jazz Work With Orchestra

Patrice Rushen will debut a commissioned jazz piece with a special concert in Detroit. The pianist, composer and bandleader will premiere The Resonate Suite with The Gathering Orchestra Nonet at the Carr Center on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 PM. The show is the result of the Carr Center's Gathering Orchestra Residency where Rushen is the 2022 resident.  Rushen will spend one week with the center's orchestra under Rodney Whitaker's direction. The Resonate Suite is three parts representing three decades and is written for three saxophones, trumpet, trombone, piano, drums, bass and guitar. The piece is the first of a larger group of works to be performed by the nine-piece ensemble. 

Rodney Whitaker is the director of The Gathering Residency a two-year fellowship that offers young musicians from 18 to 28 the opportunity to work with professional mentors on standards, new music and original compositions. The fellowship was pared down to nine musicians during the pandemic and this caused the 2021-2022 cohort to be performed virtually.  

Rushen's new piece was commissioned as part of the Resonate multi-year collaboration between Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings and the Carr Center that aims to explore the African diaspora through the lens of American chamber music. She is among seven composers to creates works that will be performed with collaborators that include Bowling Green University, Western Michigan University, the Carr Center, Oberlin Conservatory, Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan/An Arbor. The Resonate Project will have a 2023 symposium hosted by the Carr Center and chaired by Rushen. 

The residency is among Rushen's several accomplishments over a five-decade career. Her 1982 single "Forget Me Nots" had a second life after it was featured in the blockbuster 1997 film Men In Black. A career that was based in jazz in the '70s moved into a successful R&B period in the '80s. She is the first woman musical director of The Grammys , the NAACP Image Awards, the People's Choice Awards and HBO's Comic Relief V. She was the music director for Janet Jackson's Janet world tour. Her seventh album Straight From The Heart continues to inspire artists and Richmond, Virginia collective Butcher Brown covered her "Remind Me" with Alex Isley in 2021.

Broadband in red and blue states: Three solutions to low-income internet access

By Tom Wheeler “At night, after hours, in good weather, and even when the weather is not so good, people gather around the library to try and get on Wi-Fi leaking through the doors,” Linda Johnson, president of the Brooklyn Public Library told me a few days ago. While the Trump administration—especially the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)—preaches about its commitment to close the digital divide, they have done little to help the largest component of that divide: low-income Americans such as those on the library steps. Instead, the Trump FCC’s efforts have focused on Donald Trump’s base of rural voters. With typical Trumpian fanfare, the Chairman of the FCC has frequently and fervently proclaimed his top priority is ending the digital divide. “Since my first day as Chairman of the FCC, my number one priority has been closing the digital divide and bringing the benefits of the internet age to all Americans,” Trump’s FCC Chairman Ajit Pai proclaims on a slickly produced FCC web page. Accompanying that pledge is a list of “Key Initiatives” of the Chairman’s—all of which are directed at rural areas. Donald Trump won 62 percent of the national rural vote. But that’s not where the biggest broadband problem lies. There are almost three times as many Americans without a broadband subscription in blue urban areas than in red state rural areas.

Two Parts of the Digital Divide: Adoption vs. Access

The Trump FCC, by focusing its attention on rural areas with a lack of access (i.e., those unable to get broadband) is dealing with only part of the digital divide. The larger part of the digital divide is adoption; those Americans who may have broadband available, but don’t or can’t use it. According to data assembled by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the most important reason why the available broadband isn’t used is “can’t afford.” Billions of dollars have been given to corporations that refuse to extend broadband connections without such welfare. Yet, the Trump FCC has done little to help low-income Americans—urban or rural—bring the internet into homes already passed by broadband. This dichotomy becomes particularly pernicious as America goes back to school in a pandemic. Having to sit on the steps of the library after hours or go to McDonald’s to get on the internet for school is not an acceptable education strategy. The Trump FCC’s inattention falls heaviest on blue state low-income Americans. The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies reports that “30.6% of Black households with one or more children 17 or younger lack high-speed home internet (over 3.25 million Black children live in these households).” When the pandemic shut down schools, for instance, approximately 90 percent of the 51,000 students in the predominantly African American  Detroit Public Schools Community District could not access the internet. It is not just schoolwork that is affected by the lack of action on urban internet connectivity. It is virtually impossible to get a job without an internet connection to both search and apply for that job. Led by Rep. James Clyburn (D- SC), the House of Representatives has twice this year passed legislation to fund a $50 per month emergency credit for low-income Americans to obtain broadband connectivity. The HEROES Act and Moving Forward Act  have both died in the Republican-controlled Senate. For years the FCC has struggled to develop a response to this poor connectivity, largely because the existing federal program was designed around telephone service rather than internet service. Working inside those restrictions, the Obama FCC took two steps to try and expand low-income connectivity. First, it established a one-stop federal approval process for firms to participate in the low-income support program (called Lifeline) rather than an arduous state-by-state process. Second, the Obama FCC expanded the Lifeline-supported use of mobile networks for internet access. The Trump FCC repealed the first and gutted the second by proposing to deny participation to those companies specializing in pre-paid services for low-income Americans.

Time to Show Top Priority

The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity for the FCC to break the legacy policy logjam. A national emergency justifies emergency actions. Here are three solutions the Trump FCC could pursue if they really were dedicated to making the digital divide their “number one priority.” Spend E-Rate Surplus to Connect the New “Classrooms” Thanks to Obama-era reforms, the FCC’s E-Rate program has enabled over 95 percent of all school campuses to connect to the internet all the way to the students’ desks. These reforms also resulted in program costs going down while coverage went up. As a result, by one estimate, there is now approximately $2 billion sitting unspent in the E-Rate program. The pandemic has moved the “classroom” to the living room and kitchen. The unspent E-Rate funds should be redirected on an emergency basis to help low-income students connect with their teachers. As Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser recently pointed out in a petition to the FCC, Congress explicitly gave the agency “specific authority to alter the definition [of services] to provide a different definition for schools…”[1] If the Trump FCC wanted to it could use its general powers to ensure universal service by opening E-Rate funds for out-of-school use. Even if it was unwilling to do that, the agency could identify, on a temporary basis, that pandemic classrooms included student homes, thus qualifying low-income Americans for E-Rate support enabling them to purchase the internet service that already runs by their doors. Make Cable Companies Eligible for Lifeline To be eligible for the Lifeline low-income support program an internet service provider must be an “Eligible Telecommunications Carrier” (ETC). Basically, this favors telephone companies, which are already ETCs, and therefore eligible for Lifeline support. This is a legacy from when the Reagan administration created Lifeline as a subsidy for telephone service in low-income households—long before anyone had heard of the internet. Today, however, it is cable companies, not telephone companies, that are the principal providers of high-speed broadband service. The cable companies have acted responsibly to create a minimum-tier, reduced-price program for low-income Americans. Comcast’s low-tier “Internet Essentials” offering, for instance, is $9.95 per month. But because cable companies generally are not ETC’s, we are missing a huge opportunity to support the responsible actions of the cable companies. President Trump has described himself as a “wartime president.” Under such emergency “wartime” conditions, one would expect the FCC would be looking for ways to combine Lifeline dollars with programs such as Internet Essentials to actually address the problem of people lacking access to broadband because of a red tape definition. Repeat What the FCC Has Already Done for a Favored Constituency In July, Trump-appointed FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr proposed creation of a new health care support program for rural residents. The Commission adopted the proposal in August—lightning fast action for the agency. Commissioner Carr’s proposal modified an existing program designed to support rural healthcare facilities to support rural individuals. It is an excellent initiative. Like the Trump FCC’s other efforts, however, the new initiative focused on the rural constituency of Trump voters. Yet in doing so, Commissioner Carr created the model for how the FCC could also deal with the needs of low-income Americans. If the Trump FCC were serious about overcoming the educational digital divide, it could similarly modify the E-Rate program to move from supporting services to buildings housing schools and libraries and allow support of services to individuals.

A 21st Century Civil Right

Amidst the overriding national challenges of racial equality, a poorly managed pandemic, and economic upheaval it is legitimate to ask whether broadband for all Americans rises to the level of a national priority. The huge challenges faced by the United States represent the metastasis of multiple issues. As is true of all great battles, the outcome will be determined by the results of smaller skirmishes dealing with those parts. In the great battle for social equality, a healthy population, and a growing economy, one of those skirmishes is whether and how we finally come to grips with the provision of the high-speed broadband connectivity for equality, opportunity and education. For sure, rural broadband is a national deficiency failing that must be overcome. The Trump FCC, however, has politicized the programs created to attack the digital divide. Targeting effort to help the base of rural Trump voters while largely turning a blind eye to the plight of blue state low-income Americans is hardly the promised “bringing the internet to all Americans.” Shortly before he died, civil rights leader and congressman John Lewis (D-GA) explained in an interview, “Access to the internet…is the civil rights issue of the 21st century.” It is time to move forward on that right—for all Americans.
