And the last Cary Grant movie I’ll watch tonight is the 1940 screwball classic “His Girl Friday” co-starring Rosalind Russell & again Ralph Bellamy (the 2nd and last film that they did together) and is directed by the amazing Howard Hawks (known for directing such films as 1938’s “Bringing Up Baby” that also stars Grant along with Katharine Hepburn, 1944’s “To Have and Have Not” starring Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall & 1946’s “The Big Sleep” also starring Bogie & Bacall to name a few)
This movie is well known for using “rapid-fire repartee” being one of the first movies to use this effect with basically characters talking over one another and overlapping the dialogue to make it more realistic by using a sound mixer on the set to switch the mics overhead on and off at least 35 times required for each scene in the film (there was no such thing as multi-track at the time) 😊

HOLIDAY (1938) dir. by George Cukor
I want to know how I stand, where I fit into the picture, what it’s all going to mean to me. I can’t find that out sitting behind some desk in an office, so as soon as I get enough money together, I’m gonna knock off for a while. Quit. You know, retire young and work old. Come back and work when I know what I’m working for.
