December 4, 2023 Monday of the First Week of Advent
Matthew 8:5–11 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.” In today's Gospel, a Roman centurion approaches Jesus and tells him that his servant is lying at home paralyzed and suffering terribly. He admits that he is not worthy to have Jesus enter his home, but he believes that if Jesus simply says the word, his servant will be healed. To an outsider, this request may seem impossible, as the centurion is asking for a remote healing with just a word. However, the centurion has faith and trusts that Jesus can perform this miracle. Søren Kierkegaard once defined faith as "a passion for the impossible." This does not mean that God is opposed to reason or that he wants us to be unrealistic. Rather, he wants us to use our powers of imagination and analysis while also having faith in what reason cannot see. The centurion's faith was so strong that Jesus praised him, saying, "I have not found such faith in anyone in Israel."

Halloween or All Hallows' Eve is not a liturgical feast on the Catholic calendar,
but the celebration has deep ties to the Liturgical Year.
The three consecutive days — Halloween,
All Saints Day and All Souls Day — illustrate the Communion of Saints.
We, the Church Militant (those on earth,
striving to get to heaven) pray for the Church Suffering (those souls in Purgatory) especially on All Souls Day and the month of November.
We rejoice and honor the Church Triumphant (the Saints, canonized and uncanonized) in heaven.
We also ask the Saints' intercession for us.
The separate vigil and octave were abrogated in 1955, but Halloween evening marks the beginning of the observance of All Saints Day.
In England, Saints or holy people are called "hallowed," hence the name "All Hallows' Day."
The evening, or "e'en" before the feast became popularly known as "All Hallows' Eve" or even shorter, "Hallowe'en."
Since it was the night before All Saints Day, "All Hallows' Eve" (now known as Hallowe'en), was the vigil and required fasting,
many recipes and traditions have come down for this evening,
such as pancakes, boxty bread and boxty pancakes, barmbrack (Irish fruit bread with hidden charms), colcannon (combination of cabbage and boiled potatoes).
This was also known as "Nutcrack Night" in England, where the family gathered around the hearth to enjoy cider and nuts and apples.
Halloween is the preparation and combination of the two upcoming feasts.
Although the demonic and witchcraft have no place in a Catholic celebration, some macabre can be incorporated into Halloween.
It is good to dwell on our certain death, the Poor Souls in Purgatory,
and the Sacrament of the Sick.
And tied in with this theme is the Saints, canonized and non-canonized.
What did they do in their lives that they were able to reach heaven?
How can we imitate them?
How can we, like these Saints, prepare our souls for death at any moment?

I love tea! High tea, scones and clotted cream, tea parties, tea sandwiches, cookies, 3-tiered stands. Time to stop and breathe. A man is raised up from the earth by two wings -- simplicity and purity.
There must be simplicity in his intention and purity in his desires.
Simplicity leads to God, purity embraces and enjoys Him.
If your heart is free from ill-ordered affection,
no good deed will be difficult for you.
If you aim at and seek after nothing but the pleasure of God and the welfare of your neighbor, you will enjoy freedom within.
If your heart were right, then every created thing would be a mirror of life for you and a book of holy teaching,
for there is no creature so small and worthless that it does not show forth the goodness of God.
If inwardly you were good and pure,
you would see all things clearly and understand them rightly, for a pure heart penetrates to heaven and hell, and as a man is within, so he judges what is without.
If there be joy in the world, the pure of heart certainly possess it; and if there be anguish and affliction anywhere,
an evil conscience knows it too well.
As iron cast into fire loses its rust and becomes glowing white, so he who turns completely to God is stripped of his sluggishness and changed into a new man.
When a man begins to grow lax,
he fears a little toil and welcomes external comfort,
but when he begins perfectly to conquer himself and to walk bravely in the ways of God,
then he thinks those things less difficult which he thought so hard before.

Today’s O Antiphon:
O Oriens - O Dayspring - O Radiant Dawn
“O Oriens - O Radiant Dawn,
splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:
come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.”
🌹
What an amazing coincidence and blessing that O Orient this year falls on the night of the Great Conjunction in 800 AND also the Winter Solstice, which is the longest night of the year
In the year of Christ’s birth, there was chaos, violence, as well as social and political unrest.
It was also dark.
The Magi found him by way of the Christmas Star.
Similarly, today we are experiencing chaos, social and political unrest.
The Bethlehem Star appearing tonight is a reminder for us to focus on the Christ-Child.
In our darkest times, He is near us.
He brings Light and peace to us.
In the darkness, Death and life meet and are transformed in the Christ-child. ✨
What a beautiful reminder that light always overcomes the darkness.
Veni, Veni, Emmanuel
Come, Lord Jesus.

There is a clique in CatholicTwitter called leftCaths that seem to think that Catholic Social Teaching is just Bernie Sanders minus abortion. I feel like I should label myself conservative distributist to differentiate myself from them. They seem to think big government is okay so long as society is shaped towards the common good of society but it dismisses the Church’s teaching on subsidiary. I’m not the kind of person that worships the GDP of the country but I don’t think you can ignore how the economy works when establishing a stable and flourishing community. My own version would be starting the community from the ground-up rather than top-down: expanding the tax credit for each child a couple has, letting state and local governments to handle more of their own issues, and more funding for school vouchers to encourage school choice (and hopefully more parents will choose schools that offer classical education for their kids).
But I kinda don’t really wanna get too involve in defining my own political philosophy nowadays because while shopping at Wal-mart doesn’t necessarily help with establishing the distributist state, it’s not a exactly a sin to do so. And honestly over the years, I’ve realized that utopia isn’t manmade, it is made through as more individuals participation in God’s grace. In doing God’s will whatever their state in life is, then a peaceful society flourish.
But at the same time, I feel like lately I have been mostly defining what I’m against rather than what I’m actually for. It’s gotten to the point that I am constantly accused of supporting the other side just because I’m not in support of one. Like criticizing unfettered capitalism doesn’t mean I’m for socialism. And this locking oneself to either-or dichotomy is why we need more alternative and more nuanced view.

Recently I spent about a month on Twitter, as an experiment, and I cannot believe how nasty people are. Even Tumblr is weak comparatively. What. a. cesspit. And #CatholicTwitter was about the worst of the lot. Social media is a scourge, and apparently one massive temptation to rash judgment and sin against charity.
