Vox Maxima Story Spotlight 5 — Into the Tambow

What follows here is a discussion of what, if I had the means and writer tools to make my Custom Magic set have proper story spotlight material, it’d look like this, it’d be built out of this. This is basically about story mechanics underlying a game system, and I want to present it to you so you can have a handle on what it looks like when I’m trying to explain game narratives for the presentation of conventional narratives.

And here we have the conclusion of the previous story arc – the end of the Vox Maxima – and then a new thing… after that.

Buckle up!

Vox Maxima is a custom magic set created by Talen Lee. It’s composed of 187 cards, with 71 commons, 60 uncommons, 41 rares, and 15 mythic rares. Vox Decima is a custom Magic: The Gathering set, with at least one card spoiled a day, on Cohost, Kind.Social, and the r/custommagic subreddit.

Goals

This is the conclusion, the ‘gasp, to be continued in‘ moment of the Vox Maxima story. It’s meant to show the problems present in the world are building to a peak, that the time away from the imperial heart has brought with it a new push from the Emperor. Basically, now they stand at the edge of the empire, with all the knowledge of what the Emperor is really built on, with the billion murdered, and the realisation that even if they know what happened, they don’t know why, or what it means.

Express the Verge’s character:

Show that the Verge has managed to construct a civilisation, separate from the Empire, that does not need rulers or kings. People are egalitarian and share because they want to. People are willing to ask for more because they need more, or are afraid or anxious, and others understand that and are okay with providing help and safety when they need it.

Show that the Verge live not in ruins but in a deliberately changed environment; their cities are no longer consuming magical power and the like, they are not making things more dense, but spreading out and sharing and making things across the whole range.

Emphasise the importance of the Tambow river.

Prepare the group to splinter once more, leaving behind Elise as she heads back to the heart of the Empire with Cazas. The nature of this separation from Niamh can be acrimonious or hopeful – Niamh is after all, not a ‘real’ princess, meaning they can make a case for leaving her behind.

Primrose, Kraivh IV and Niamh have to dive into the dreams of the Tambow, and in so doing, emerge in the Ghostlands that mark the start of the next story.

Characters

The Tambow is a nice place. It’s a place where people share an ideology and hold to a cultural norm that accepts people’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s not ‘nature red in tooth and claw’ – it’s a respectful place that recognises the way things are, and appreciates them.

Torun is the eye-level brawling goon that joins the group as they arrive. She sees the group interfacing with imperial guards that are pushing at the edges of the Verge and wants to get involved to fight, because she loves the fighting and hates the empire. For obvious reasons. Torun travels with the group, who assume she’s a dumb barbarian, and while she’s definitely rough, she’s happy to explain how the Verge degrew their society, and stopped doing things that hurt the world. She travels with the group along the river, but can’t volunteer suggestions for what to do – she doesn’t even understand their quest.

Rue is one of the mystics that live along the river. She is happy to speak to the travellers about their situation, but has no interest in the Emperor. She instead extols the idea of living their lives the way they want to live them. Why care about their quest? Does it matter to them? If it does, how do they want it to end? They should act in the way that the world should work the way they want it to.

Luminur is a old werebear, who lives in a mixed form. He should be an opportunity to talk about how the Verge is not a vision of a place where you have two be two things at once – that all things are part of a flow, an ongoing, permanently changing dance between things that already exist. Luminur also probably should summon something dreadful from the river to fight Imperial forces. Luminur is a summoner, and always summons things in pairs.

Scene

At this point the story has been built up in a way you can escalate.

With his daughters out of the house, and therefore away from attention, the emperor has been setting up some good old fashioned purges and establishing his territory broader and more brutally. To the Verge, he has sent Rudel III – who is, like Jatku, a resurrected Vampire, a reconstructed version of the philosopher Rudel. Basically, the emperor has sent the person who should most want to protect the Verge to burn it back. Rudel III is accompanied by Gwynn XI, another strange undead who uses portals to protect themselves from the battlefield.

This is a sign of what harm the empire is doing to its edges. Where the dead fall they can be turned to more of the Empire’s skeletal armies, which then strip the land of resources and send them back. The Princesses see what’s happening, and flee to pursue the mystery of the Lost Decade up the river, looking for Rudel’s laboratory. Rudel III continues raging through the space, and chases them, while both fight or escape from various monsters of the Verge.

There’s a lot of room for a chase here; Rudel and Gwynn are persistent threats that chase, they experience more of the Verge, and move on from place to place.

At some point on this narrative, the group splits;

Jatku II may stay back to fight with Rudel and Gwynn.

Cazas II and Elise head back into the Imperial heart, and whether they do so amicably or angrily is part of the mystery

Primrose, Kraivh IV, and Niamh, either desperate and lost, or with the blessing of their sisters, meet with a tambow mystic – not a legendary character, as described, they explicitly explain that they are just one of many…

And fall into the Ghostlands, the realm where the Lost Decade happens. From there, the story of Vox Maxima ends, and then it’s the beginning of…

Niamh wakes up, after falling through the world. She sits up, and finds herself in a new, haunted place – where the Tambow mystic referred to as the ghost lands. She fell in with Kraivh IV and Primrose, but cannot find Primrose. Instead, surrounded by a looming fen, a forest with long fronds and thick mists, she is approached by an inquisitive, blue-haired, big-eyed and friendly fey figure with a tail and an eager voice and willingness to talk that calls themself Pip.

And here is where Decima Vex starts.

Decima Vex is set in a haunted world called the Ghostlands where there are strange signs of a terrible, cataclysmic event. A torn little shred of land surrounded by rolling mists, populated by hungering ghosts, it is about the size of a small country, with multiple different factions trying to find ways to survive and cope with the extremely damaged, eerie world in which they are trapped.

Decima Vex is a three-colour set focusing on five factions, with each colour represented. They are:

The Gwynn Combine (white-blue-green), a coalition of researchers who sought access to alternate dimensions to escape the Necrocalypse and in so doing, united their order of knights and researchers with the courts of the fair folk. Their keyword mechanic is Convoke.

The Ynvei Machination (red-blue-black), the grand conspiracy manipulating all events from behind the shadows – even outside of the Ghostlands – at the direction of the Emperor’s lost wife, Ynvei. Their keyword mechanic is Foretell.

The Volja Horde (black-red-green), the last remnants of a fairytale kingdom plagued by a nightmare dragon and its cursed, undead king. Their keyword mechanic is Eternalize.

The Cazas Dawn (white-black-green), a cathedral-building church of sunworshippers trapped in a world where the sun is a ghost of its own, a cursed eye they call the Saun. Their keyword mechanic is Exalted.

The Trezi Stand (white-blue-red), technologists and magitechnicians who seemingly spent generations building amazing synthetic structures that rival the Iacon with a tiny fragment of the power and support. Their keyword mechanic is Reconfigure.

The other themes of the Vox Maxima continue! There is more Eminence, Goad, Double-Faced cards, and Sagas.

Ride with High School Friends

The date is 2023-03-04. I have a ride scheduled for today with my high school friends. This is my second ride with them. My first ride was kind of getting to know how they ride since it was really my first time with them. I have no idea on how they would fair for a long group ride.

Our meet up point is at Petron Gas Station located at Marikina Infanta Highway, near the LRT station in Santolan. I arrived there first at around 0700AM. Second to arrive was James, then Mond. So here we are below, taking a selfie before we take off.

Our first destination was at Caza Peregrine Resort and Restaurant. We arrived at the spot at around 0820AM. We kind of got lost since Waze led us to a place somewhat far from where we should be. We arrived just a few meters away from the entrance and good thing there were people there that helped us find the correct spot.

Since this is located in Antipolo, the view there is awesome. I have been told that we should go there around dawn so we can see the sea of clouds. Maybe that would be for another time but for now, this is as good as it gets.

There were a number of people in the place since this is a go to place when going to Antipolo. There were a lot of motorcycle riders present and few number of cars at the parking. You would know that the place is more accessible by motorcycle rather than a car.

We ate breakfast at the place. Was not able to capture an image since I was too busy looking at the scene and when the food came, I quickly dug in. As usual, I always eat the never ending tapa meals. And by the way, we sat at something like a tree house so we could enjoy the food and the view altogether.

Our next stop is at Pililla Windmill Farm. The way was kind of tricky since we started at a spot were there is no cell reception and Waze gets data loss at some parts. We did not take the normal route where we have to ride along Marilaque Highway. It was the weekend and we expected that there would be a lot of riders along the way and we would not like to encounter accidents since that place is prone to.

We also did not choose the road where we would encounter CVM Orchard and Ecopark since we saw that the road was guarded by some military check point. We opted for a route to villages and a whole lot of turns. We did not expect that we had to go through some off road along the way.

We also had a hard time looking for a good spot when we arrived somewhere near the windmills. The map clearly displays that we were there however the place was not what we expected and also not the same as the ones we had seen in the images and videos of people who went there to visit. So we had to do what we have at that time.

We arrived there at around 1250PM.

We had a little bit of a mishap there. We were about to take off and James was not able to correctly maneuver his motorcycle then fell off. We were at some downhill road and he miscalculated. There were some marks on the motorcycle but James was fine. He just laughed it off.

We then headed to our last destination at Sikatan Sikada Cafe.

We had our late lunch here and as usual, I ordered a never ending Tapa meal. I don’t know, but wherever cafe I go, that was usually the one I look for in the menu. The food was good, can’t really say it’s awesome but it serves its purpose. We took our time there since that was the last stop for the day. We relaxed and enjoyed the view since the spot we stayed, it was only us and cool winds embraced us during our time there.

When her father was named Hand of the King after Jon Arryn's death in 300 A. C., Arya with her brother Bran left for the Capital with her father, while the other brothers of her stayed in Invernalia. In her stay in King's Landing she was somewhat tumultuous because everyone saw her rebellious and tomboy behavior badly, even Queen Cersei called her "Prince Arya" in derision.

In 303 A. C., Eddard together with Renly Baratheon and Varys conspired against Queen Cersei Lannister after discovering that her three children were not King Robert's and they looked for a way to find the queen with her lover and brother, Jaime Lannister.

After the event known as "The scandal of the Queen's Tower" where the King and his hand broke into Cersei's rooms finding her in full act with her lover, this being horrible for King Robert who finally discovered the true face of his wife. To avoid endangering Arya and Bran were secretly sent to Winterfell where they were under the protection of their mother and her older brother, Robb.

Cersei and Jaime Lannister were executed for treason, adultery, and incest, while their children were disinherited in favor of Stannis Baratheon who became the heir to the Seven Kingdoms. Joffrey Mares was forced to join the Night's Watch, Myrcella became Lord Eddard's ward, and Tommen was sent to Casterly Rock alongside his grandfather, Tywin Lannister.

Robert I Baratheon named as heir to the Lordship of Storm's End his bastard son, Gendry, who was legitimized as a Baratheon, while Renly Baratheon had to keep the Lordship of Dragonstone.

While all these events were taking place, Arya stayed away from her as did hers, her brothers, continuing her quiet life. It was said that the more she grew, her beauty intensified, being considered as beautiful as her deceased aunt, Lyanna Stark and this led to Lady Stark receiving different marriage proposals, this being very stressful for her and she refused to marry someone. man who would deny her to be just a "baby machine".

Despite this, her parents wanted her to marry, so they sought a compromise with House Tyrell or House Hightower. This upset Arya and she decided to undertake a trip to King's Landing where Robert Baratheon still reigned who received her as a daughter of her. When Arya announced her marriage to Gendry, her mother was enraged as she considered her son-in-law a bastard and her daughter a shameless one. However, Eddard was not bothered by the union because of his sympathy for Gendry and together with Robert I they allowed the marriage despite the scandal it caused.

The couple settled in Storm's End and it is known that Lord Gendry allowed his wife to do what she liked, so Arya would wear her Mayan coat whenever she wanted, she would ride where she wanted to go and eat as she wanted to be. considered his attitude very shameful. Their marriage improved over the years and they both came to love each other, their marriage being very passionate, as well as faithful since Gendry never had lovers.

In 344 A. C., Gendry Baratheon died of heart problems and Arya never recovered from that loss, visiting the grave of her husband whenever she could. After becoming a widow, she remained by her son Eddard, being a more influential woman than her daughter-in-law, Wanda Frey (Stevron Frey's great-granddaughter), creating a great tension between them for wanting to be the most important woman.

Arya Stark died in 353 A. C., she at 64 years of age of natural causes and her remains were buried next to those of her husband in Storm's End.

Esto molesto a Arya y decidió emprender un viaje hacia Desembarco del Rey donde aun reinaba Robert Baratheon que la recibió como una hija. Ahí conoció a Gendry Baratheon, el ahora Señor de Bastión de Tormenta un joven apuesto, fornido y con un temple parecido al de su padre el rey cuando este era joven.

Arya y Gendry tuvieron una buena relación compartiendo una gran pasión por la caza, las armas y los caballos. Gendry escribía cartas a su medio hermano, Edric Tormenta sobre lo bella que era Lady Stark y lo mucho que disfrutaba su compañía pensando incluso en desposarse con ella. Mientras esto sucedía, Eddard Stark y Mace Tyrell habían acordado un compromiso entre Arya y el hijo de Mace, Loras Tyrell, pero de este se decía que mantenía un romance con Renly Baratheon. Cuando Arya anunció su casamiento con Gendry, su madre monto en cólera ya que consideraba a su nuero como un bastardo y a su hija como una desvergonzada. Sin embargo Eddard no se molesto por la unión por su simpatía hacia Gendry y junto a Robert I permitieron el matrimonio pese al escandalo que ocasionaba.

La pareja se instalo en Bastión de Tormenta y se sabe que Lord Gendry permitía a su esposa hacer lo que ella le gustara, por lo que Arya vestiría con su cota de maya cuando quisiera, cabalgaría hacia donde ella quería llegar y comería como ella quisiera siendo considerada su actitud muy vergonzosa. Su matrimonio fue mejorando con el paso de los años y ambos llegaron a amarse siendo su matrimonio muy apasionado, además de fiel ya que Gendry jamas tuvo amantes.

Pesé a no ser presionada para alumbrar a un hijo, Arya se quedo embarazada en el 310 d. C., dando a luz a su primer hijo, Eddard Baratheon que sería Señor de Bastión de Tormenta.

Arya y Gendry tuvieron tres hijos mas:

Catelyn Baratheon que sería conocida por tener una historia de amor con su primo, Elys Arryn y termino siendo Señora de las Tres Torres.

Gendry Baratheon que uniría al Clan Flint en Invernalia.

Robert Baratheon que sería conocido por tener cinco esposas y mucha descendencia.

Arya Stark educo a todos sus hijos para que fueran formidables guerreros y tuvieran otras cualidades que no solo fueran la politica o el matrimonio, logrando que su hijo Gendry se uniera al Clan Flint gracias a su destreza con la lanza y el arco. Lady Baratheon no participo mucho en las audiciones con el Señor de Bastión de Tormenta, pero estuvo presente junto a su marido y se le permitía hablar siempre que fuera importante.

Arya también formo parte de algunos grupos de mujeres que solían competir en secreto en torneos o carreras de caballos, haciéndose pasar por un hombre llamado Arry y llego a ganar varios combates incluso contra su propio marido. También tuvo una gran influencia en la corte logrando que muchas mujeres dejaran de lado sus atuendos incomodos o actitudes femeninas para que pudieran hacer los mismos pasatiempos que un hombre o vestir como uno, siendo esto mal visto por algunos vasallos de los Baratheon.

La vida de la joven loba se vio afectada cuando en el 335 d. C., fallecieron sus hermanos Robb y Sansa siendo sus muertes muy dolorosas para Lady Baratheon ya que pese a siempre tener diferencias con su hermana, su relación mejoro cuando llegaron a la edad adulta.

En el 344 d. C., falleció Gendry Baratheon de problemas del corazón y Arya jamás se recupero de aquella perdida, visitando la tumba de su esposo cada vez que podía. Tras convertirse en viuda se mantuvo al lado de su hijo Eddard siendo una mujer mas influyente que su nuera, Wanda Frey (bisnieta de Stevron Frey) creándose una gran tensión entre ambas por querer ser la mujer mas importante.

Arya Stark murió en el año 353 d. C., a los 64 años de edad de causas naturales y sus restos fueron enterrados junto a los de su marido en Bastión de Tormenta.

Why I think this is important.

Not everyone wills to create a real language from zero, making it will be hella difficult and it will be a long work. So my alternative for you, m’fellows, is pseudo-languages.

So There are 31 of my cyphers I use to frick-frack people’s heads. All of the languages are speakable, but are all my creation, so if you gonna use them please give credit. 

Aiiabgeah - Simple one way replacement cypher: J-A’, K-Aa, L-Ab, M-Ac, N-Ad, O-Ae, P-Af, Q-Ag, R-ah, S-Ai, T-B’, U-Ba, V-Bb, W-Bc, X-Bd, Y-Be, Z-Bf. (Example - Ebdaacafabe) 

Anguag - Erase the first and the last letters of each word. If one letter is left, use Spelling Cypher, if more - use Talak/Sapezak. (Example - Xampl)

Awaric - All the vowels in the word are replaced by the vowel first written in such a word. (Example - Exemple)

Biujeb/Giweenian - Consonants are replaced by the next vowel standing after them in the latin alphabet, same standing for vowels which are replaced by the next consonant standing to the right. (Example - Fabooof)

Deites - All consonants are replaced by the consonant to the right, all vowels are replaced by the vowel to the right, the letter “H h” in all digraphs (hereinafter H-digraphs) where it’s used is ignored. (Example - Iyenqmi)

Dicode/Atukyt - Write your text in reverse and apply this replacement of the letters in both ways: Aa-Ee, Bb-Pp, Cc-Kk, Dd-Tt, Ff-Hh, Gg-Jj, Ii-Yy, Ll-Rr, Mm-Nn, Oo-Uu, Qq-Xx, Ss-Zz, Vv-Ww. (Example - Arbneqa)

Draned Thonghu - All consonants capable of making a H-digraph turn into such while all the H-digraphs present get the letter “H h” erased. Any two same consonants standing next to each other are replaced by one such, any sequence of vowels gets erased except the first vowel in such. (Example - Examphle)

Edatrel Oscha - Take the original phrase or word and translate every morpheme of it to different languages or other cyphers in this list, after which put all the morphemes in ap[habetical order without spaces between them. (Example = Archtoprimezwei)

Eguangal/Uengot - Consonants and vowels that stand in a group count as one such - put these groups in reverse order. (Example = Emplaxe)

Espelel - Spelling Cypher used on the first and the last letters of one such word. (Example = Ixampli)

Espiielel/Spelling - Replace each letter with the way it’s spelled in the alphabet: A=Ey, B=Bi, C=Si, D=Di, E=I, F=Ef, G=Ji, H=Hi, I=Ay, J=Jay, K=Key, L=El, M=Em, N=En, O=Ow, P=Pi, Q=Que, R=Ar, S=Es, T=Ti, U=Yu, V=Vi, W=Du, X=Ex, Y=Wy, Z=Zi. (Example - Iexeyempieli)

Geagulan - Put syllables of each word in reverse order. (Example - Leampex)

Ikonian - Use Deites on the first and the last letter of each word. (Example - Ixampli)

Inglosh - Replace each vowel with the vowels standing to the right in alphabetical order, with other words Deites used only on the vowels. (Example - Ixempli)

Jareat - Each letter “G g” to be replaced with either digraph “Ja ja” or the letter “J j”. Each letter “J j” to be replaced with the letter “Y y”. Each letter “Y y” to be replaced with the letter “I i”. (Example: Job Guy - Yob Jaui/Jui) 

Juiu-caza - Erase every third letter in each word separately. (Example - Exmpe)

Kagyysheft - Use the russian keyboard layout and replace the russian letters with their english transliteration: Аа=Aa, Бб=Bb, Вв=Vv, Гг=Gg, Дд=Dd, Ее=Ieie, Ёё=Ioio, Жж=Zhzh, Зз=Zz, Ии=Ii, Йй=Jj, Кк=Kk, Лл=Ll, Мм=Mm, Нн=Nn, Оо=Oo, Пп=Pp, Рр=Rr, Сс=Ss, Тт=Tt, Уу=Uu, Фф=Ff, Хх=Hh, Цц=Tsts, Чч=Chch, Шш=Shsh, Щщ=Schsch, Ъъ= -, Ыы=Yy, Ьь= ‘, Ээ=Ee, Юю=Iuiu, Яя=Iaia. Langeigo - Starting with the first vowel all vowels to be replaced with such in alphabetical with the first vowel in the word. (Example - Eximplo)

Lanuge - No vowels or consonants can be put in a group - thus if two vowels or consonants stand in a row all except the first in such group to be erased. (Example - Exame)

Maphuahe - Every consonant and H-digraph to be replaced with the next such in alphabetical order, in other words Deites used on the consonants and H-digraphs only. (Example - Eyanqme)

Menorius - No two letters can be repeated in a word, thus if two letters repeat the second of them in numerological order must be converted into the next vowel/consonant by alphabetical order. (Example - Exampli)

Pikkekox - Each vowel to be converted into a mirrored alphabet equivalent vowel, same goes to consonants. (Example - Odupmqo)

Pinclang - Using several cyclic groups of letters replace each letter with the letter standing next after it: AI CG BDFH E JLPR KMQ O N STV U WXYZ. (Example - Eyiqrpe)

Spee Eech - Each vowel to be replaced with the whole list of vowels used in the whole word, with each next vowel the first letter of the list to be placed in the end of it. If such groups of vowels become too big, add apostrophe between them. (Example: Failure - Faiue’iuealueaireaiu)

Spikingsimpl - Use no diphthongs, thus the writing system is straight up phonetical. (Example - Ekzampl)

Taentang - Take all the vowels in a word, list them and put each between the consonants. When the list ends, skip one space between the consonants and proceed after. (Example - Xemapel)

Talak/Sapezak - No vowel can stand next to another vowel, same goes to consonants. To do so, between consonants put vowels in alphabetical order and between vowels put consonants in reverse alphabetical order. (Example - Examapele)

Tekitti - All consonants are replaced either with the letter “T t” or the letter “K k” - perhaps the one that is the closest. Letter “P p” is replaced with “K k” bu custom. Letter “Y y” is automatically considered a vowel. (Example - Etakkke)

Tlakneg - Erase the vowels and put vowels in alphabetical order between consonants that stood in a row. (Example - Xmapel)

Yuunknownen - Double the first and the last letters of a word and use Spelling Cypher on them. (Example - Iexamplei)

Zhypro - Similar to Pinclang, but a different list of cyclic letter groups. Thus, AU K BLV CMW DNX EOY FPZ GQ HR I S JT. (Example - Onuwzvo)
