In Memoria

 On Friday, May 4, 2020, Cody our beloved Black Lab, crossed the rainbow bridge assisted by Dr. Woods at VCA clinic in Alderwood, WA. He died in Merilyn’s arms, which is fitting, in that the last few years of his life he took it on himself to become her companion and solace to her fears and anxiety.  I was there where he could feel me stroking his face and see.  Me.

He was a brave and stalwart dog and held on even filled with fatal medicines.  He did not go eagerly into that long good night.

After she and the doctors left, I said my goodbyes.

Cody was 13 years old and had been having in increasing pain in his hips, suffering neurological issues which kept him from being able to get up without help.  His hips had twisted and often he could not gather his legs under himself to balance. He was also falling when he walked as his hips often twisted as he stepped forward.  At the time of his passing he was on high doses of morphine, gabapentin and CBD for pain. Cody was alert and mentally present as we said goodbye. Dr. Woods assisted him to go to sleep and pass across the rainbow bridge in our presence.

Cody was born in Artesia, NM in 2006 and came into William’s life as an 8-week-old puppy. During Cody’s early years he lived on a small horse farm in Carlsbad, NM and traveled with William and his dog pal Jake throughout the southwest.  At age six months he began training to be a search and rescue dog and was doing quite well until a cat friend slapped him and with one snap Cody killed the cat. Though it was an accident Cody was dropped from the SAR training program. Cody went on to become a daily companion for William and Jake and at Jake’s passing continued to travel throughout the USA visiting 22 states.  One of Williams fondest memories was the day the six-month-old Cody came in from outside with a fishing lure he had found. The treble hook through his lower lip. He sat on William’s lap quietly during the removal of the hook and then wen on to play.  He was always a tough dog from puppy until the end.  

Cody found a second career as a therapy dog accompanying William to his therapy practice where he worked with youth and adults providing comfort during their sessions.  He was a good discerner of good people from bad people and was an asset to William’s therapy practice.

The last 5 years of His life, Cody became the support companion for Merilyn and the two developed an inseparable attachment of great mutual love. He spent every day with her and eventually would not let her out of his sight. He remained faithful to William, but it was clear he came to love her and protect her in a way she really needed. He was quick with a kiss or a paw to hold. In his last years he was Merilyn’s constant companion giving her comfort and support as they had small adventures on walks. Although elderly and in pain he loved her walks with him at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey island.  

In spite of the cat incident, Cody was a peaceful soul and was patient and kind. He loved to go with William on adventures with the horses. He loved being able to go into Cracker Barrel where he would lie under the table and watch other patrons while he and William pretended, he had not flunked SAR School.  He loved to travel and swim retrieving training decoys.  

He was alert and loving but in a great deal of pain at the end. Being “the brave dog” he was, he pushed through that pain and offered attention, comfort and love to the very end.  Letting him sleep in peace was a terribly difficult decision because he was still trying so hard to be present and loving.

He was preceded in death by his dog friends Jake, Sherlock, Artemis and Reggie, and his cat friend Boo, who he accidentally killed.

Cody will be cremated by VCA clinic and his ashes returned to Merilyn and William.

Cody was a really good friend and companion. Merilyn and William will miss him terribly.

They say that in time a dog begins to reflect his owner/handler’s character. I think with Cody it was the other way around and William is a much better person for having Cody as a friend, learning fearlessness, gentleness trust and discernment of people. Learning to recognize the bad and the good and learning to know loyalty.

At the end Merilyn got to see what complete and total trust and faith looks like as he leaned into her in his last moments.

Goodbye dear Friend. I hope we meet again in a place where we can both play fetch from the water again.
