CD magic and snake oil
Every audio media has it's snake oil or magic powder to improve things.
I played a CD of Jazz by a Canadian Jazz Trio lead by Holly Cole. My wife does not care for it so... When I pulled it from it's jewel case it had a cute rubber gasket thing around it.
Back in the day there were many similar things. The rubber gasket thing was to suppress vibration. There were also rings of sorbothane that had adhesive backs to do the same thing. The theory was that the plastic disc spinning as fast as it did would vibrate and wobble making the laser focus tricky and needing the error correction digital parts to get the data off hence a reduction in sound quality. Not totally unreasonable.
Of course since it was on my CD I must have bought it. This was two or three CD players ago I think. This stuff did not come from the factory like that. I recall the sticky one had a centering tool to make sure it was PERFECTLY balanced. Yah sure! The gasket thing was like an elastic band with a channel cross section that grabbed the edge of the disc. Probably a bit more precise. Did it help? It didn't hurt I guess.
Fancy CD players had dynamic balancing and extreme vibration isolation. That is what made them so expensive. Chips are chips and all the digital stuff is chips. The laser focusing device is gloriously analog with a lens that is moved by a coil fed a signal. Maybe later versions used piezo actuators, but that does not matter. Lasers are pretty boring things now unless you are a cat.
Rubber bits were not the only thing they tried. There was the notorious green marker. That was applied to the outer circumference of the CD to block light that may interfere with the laser. Red Laser green marker. I am sure the inventor went to the local school or office supply store and cleared them out of green markers, had labels printed and made a fast fortune.
I have had CDs fail for various reasons and when that happens they chirp like birds as the error correction goes out.
After my wife complained I put on a Josh Bell CD. Violins are pretty tricky to record and reproduce. This Sounds pretty fine as I am sure care was taken to keep it clear. CDs can sound quite nice. Hey did you know that Josh Bell breathes when he plays. Maybe if he inhaled with an open mouth it would not be so prominent. Audiophile detail can be annoying sometimes. This disc has no gaskets or rim treatments so there.
I have not bought a CD for a while. I probably will not add any gaskets if I get a new one. If it has music I want it is possible.
By comparison there is little I have done with my vinyl. (CDs are polycarbonate)
My LP treatment is limited to cleaning it with my old disc-washer brush and new "groove-washer" fluid. I clean it lightly every time I play them. Even in the nice archival MOFI slip sleeves they can get dust on them. (Even Cat Hair! Shudder!!). At least this is a no-smoking home.
Some LP fiends play thier records wet. I mean actually wet with fluids of strange types passed over by moon crystals. The idea is not totally crazy, lubrication can be good I guess. Still I do not do that.
I do play my records with a weight on the centre. I have a cork mat under the factory slip mat which I know makes a difference. It really suppresses vibration and makes the beast quieter.
Aside from those things I do fiddle with different phono cartridges from time to time. I mean why have so many and not play with them. I am sure it is disappointing to some that they sound pretty similar to one another.
On duty today Yamaha S300 CD player ARC SP14 preamp (Russian tube) and the infamous Franken-Amp with my invisible speakers.

Milford Graves, Arthur Doyle, Hugh Glover — Children of the Forest (Black Editions)
Tumblr media
Children of the Forest by Milford Graves, Arthur Doyle, Hugh Glover
Drummer Milford Graves rarely recorded during his lifetime, and, until recently, most of his releases were long out of print. Corbett vs. Dempsey began to rectify that with key reissues of Bäbi, his trio with reed players Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover, and The Complete Yale Concert 1966, his duos with Don Pullen. TUM records stepped in with Wadada Leo Smith’s Sacred Ceremonies, a 3 CD set including an incendiary duo with Graves along with a trio with Graves and bassist Bill Laswell. Since his death in February, 2021 Black Editions Archive has stepped up the game, digging in to Graves’ vaults, first with an issue of a trio set by Peter Brötzmann, Milford Graves, William Parker, and now, with Children of the Forest, a set of recordings captured in Graves’ Queens workshop with Doyle and Glover in the months leading up to the Bäbi session. The two-LP set documents a January 1976 duo session with Graves along with Glover on tenor saxophone, a brief drum solo from February of that year and a March trio session with Graves, Glover on klaxon, percussion and vaccine (a Haitian one-note trumpet) and Doyle on tenor saxophone and flute. The torrid rawness of these recordings looks toward the torrential barrage of Bäbi but brings out a more ritualistic edge to the playing.
Graves had spent his early years studying African drumming, tablas and playing timbales in Latin jazz bands and that sense of time, extended from African and Caribbean ceremonial music and ritual imbue these sessions. Hugh Glover talks about this and the time he spent with Graves, whom he refers to as Prof, in the extensive interview included with the LP set conducted by Jake Meginsky. “We were listening to the music of the peoples of the interior forest of the Congo… First, the Prof’s mood sets up a tribal-like atmosphere. It’s Congo-like — possession states. The rhythms, I think they immediately stimulated the need to dance… The next thing one must know and be aware of is that Milford Graves, he is not a time-keeping drummer like most jazz drummers. Prof represents the epitome of traditional hand drumming. I’m talking about ceremonial music and ritualistic sounds most familiar with divination.”
Hugh Glover only recorded a few times so the January duo session with him and Graves is a particular find. The first of the four improvisations starts out with the percussionist’s churning thunder, leading to the entry of the tenor player’s hoarse, braying cries. The two had known each other for a decade at that point and Glover had been part of a European tour of Graves’ quartet along with Joe Rigby and Arthur Williams. That symbiosis is immediately evident. There’s a fluid sense of polyphony and elastic polyrhythms at play as the two bound along with ebullient intensity. The music is charged with open, spontaneous interchange and while the intensity level is high, they never overpower each other. Graves’ percussion work is revelatory here, spilling across his kit with a limber, propulsive dynamism. One can hear the legacy of African and Latin American rhythms exploded out with the drummer’s lithe control of tuned skin and slashing cymbals, with masterful control of dynamics and timbre. The inclusion of a short, 2-minute recording from the session reveals their careful attention to detail as the two sound-check the room and their balance and then charge into a compact give-and-take. Their concluding 7-minute improvisation is a particular highlight as they ebb and flow with synchronous fervor.
The inclusion of a three-minute drum solo, recorded in February, is a brilliant addition to the set, particularly since Graves didn’t release any solo recordings until his two discs on Tzadik that came out in the late 1990s. On this 1976 recording, Graves distills his unified, multi-limbed attack into a roiling tempest of energy. Each thundering salvo, each cymbal crash, each resounding wallop of the bass drum is meted out with focus and intention. Glover remarks that listening to the solo recording he was struck by “the melody, and the melody of the tones that he gets, the way he rocks from one melody pitch to another. It has always been a mystery to me how Cuban drummers in Bata were able to modulate the rhythm and the meter. Well, it takes more than one player to do it Cuban style. Prof shows you can do it as one player.”
The three March improvisations with Graves, Glover, and Arthur Doyle provide a notable link in the trajectory toward the session recorded a few weeks later that would be released as Bäbi. Glover reminisces about the March session here, noting “When we played, though, Doyle and I, we weren’t thinking of BÄBI [a name Graves used for his conceptual approach to improvisation]. We were thinking of… well I know I was thing of, and I’m pretty sure he was thinking, how do we keep up with Prof!” While that may have been going through their minds, that uncertainty never reveals itself in their playing. Graves begins the 12-minute improvisation that opens the set with tuned cascades of rim shots and toms and the two quickly join in, with Doyle’s raspy tenor crying out against the shifting percussion. The modulating rhythms and meters of Graves’ solo are the foundation of the buzzing whorls that develop in three-way, spontaneous orchestration which never flags for a moment. The shorter second piece kicks off with an extended section of chattering drums, making way for the two partners to interject barking, ecstatic exclamations that mount with intensity as Graves hurtles in with clanging cowbell. The final piece is the most abstracted, with Doyle’s high-pitched flute skirling against the chafed yawp of Glover’s klaxon and Graves’ coursing flow. Here, improvisation and ritual are melded together with pelting focus.
Glover concludes his interview reminiscing  that “It was like Prof was saying, there is no ensemble, there is no musical configuration that I can’t play with as long as I’m allowed to play what I want to play. In other words, his confidence factor was like, I know I have the essence of where any group wants to go. If they allow me to do my thing, I’ll take them there.” The sessions released on Children of the Forest are a fitting testament to that belief and provide a welcome addition to the documentation of the lineage of Graves’ musical legacy. Here's to hoping that Black Editions continues to mine the Prof’s archives.

De Algemene Verwarring #106 - 5 February 2024
Episode one hundred and six of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, February 5, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Yeah yeah I'm late to the party once again, so I'll be short. Pictured below is Zyklome A, Belgian punk legends. Read all about them on the Ultra Eczema bandcamp page or homepage, Ultra Eczema, run by Dennis Tyfus, was so good to76 page book filled with tons of archive material reissue all the recorded material by the band on a double album, and as a fabulous extra you also get a 76 page book filled with tons of archive material. I mean, why would you even doubt to buy this?
Other music in this episode comes from the mighty Goodbye Boozy label with three singles by The Traditional Fools, Mainframe and Ghoulies, girlie punk from Chin-Chin and Ribbon Stage, postpunk by Blue Orchids, Die Atlantikschwimmer, Trummerfrauen, and Section 25, and I'm also playing a great early Simple Minds track. There's also a small Wio special (two songs!) and we end things with a track from the beautiful new Roy Montgomery album. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

October Finds, Pt. 1: Music, Books, Comics, Graphic Novels
As we are getting closer to the holiday season, I thought it might be nice to share links to cartoon merchandise I've seen floating around. I use a lot of the websites listed for gift-giving inspiration or to fill up any wishlists that friends and family ask me for. I've tried to keep most things on this list under $50, and most items are on clearance or discounted heavily.
Please support your local record shops, book stores, and comics stores! It's likely they can ship in some of the items on this list for you instead of you ordering them online. I'm putting this list together for those who may not have access to those resources, or who might be looking for a very specific thing that is out of stock in retail spaces.
You can find Pt. 2 of the list here, where I share links to plushies, clothing, accessories, dinnerware, prints and more.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with any of the stores linked under the read more. I'm just someone who watches a lot of TV and reads a lot of books and likes to celebrate that by buying merch every now and then.

The Powerman and the Moneygoround”. Lleva por toda letra: “Coke after Coke after Coke after Coca-Cola”.

Right and Wrong.
Mr Guttenberg the "audiophiliac" keeps spinning videos. It's his job. Sometimes more than a grain of salt is needed to listen to this stuff. Every new and different product seems to be better. He has a new best.
This is the "best planar magnetic" speaker and it is from France. It is not inexpensive.
youtube
He does go on about the basic superiority of dipoles that fill the room with sound. His current reference speakers are cone dipoles. Recall I believe this is a major flaw in the concept as all those extra sound waves careen around the room. They are not in the original signal, they confuse things. Yet he praised the imagery and clarity of these things. How are all those extra bits not confusing? Its the old brain thing of prioritizing the initial signal you hear and consigning the other things to something else.
Is it not better to put out just the signal on the recording into the room?
Two things I want to emphasize about his opinions.
First is that these are "push pull" magnetics with magnets on the front and back so they are more linear. Errr, not so much, but more magnets make a more uniform field strength. They do not mean these are linear as the diaphragm is under tension so excursions are fought by the membrane tension. But sorta yes they are more linear, but not actually linear.
Second is his experience of always shifting and moving them as each recording he played sounded different. Phase cancellation dude. One of the true evils of of dipoles. Each position gives a different frequency response. That is not a good feature even though he enjoyed it.
Arguably these are very much like Magneplanars if they decided to go really upscale. Maggies are made from MDF which is a crappy material that has one good behaviour. It damps vibration. It is cheap made from glue and wood waste. The French product has steel front and back faces with MDF in between. That means they are heavy and have more inertial mass to resist motion from the vibrating air. It can push harder. Newton says the air will push back. These will work better than maggies.
Big Planar speakers have one really good parameter. They move a lot of air. They have good acoustic impedance matching to the room. That makes the sound more immediate and "alive" which is the effect of simple efficient transfer of energy from the speaker to the air.
Horn loaded speakers do the same thing, just with the added distortion from being a horn.
Each has its problems.
So here is another flavour of the week. Tastes good, but it is not audio nirvana.
In other news I listened to my "Kind of Blue" LP.
I first did some searches for info about the label Jazz Wax. I have another of those I like. Talk about a rabbit hole. Internet forum wisdom is that my copy may be a legal pirated version. A privateer version? One forum decried the label Jazz Wax as stealing masters that had expired copyrights. Some bastards in Europe are cutting LPs from CD copies say these paragons of justice.
Interesting and maybe true, certain no. Copyrights do expire on published works. But I think the property rights of the physical media product do not expire like that. Miles Davis' work is Public Domain if he has been dead long enough and his estate did not renew it. But the ownership of the masters I think remains with the company who produced or purchased it. That is why Universal has all those underground vaults with master tapes and digital files squirreled away. No point if someone could just copy an old CD. Whatever, I am not a lawyer.
It was interesting the intensity and vehemence of the discussion. Really calm down people. Kind of Blue is a work of performing art. If I want an LP and it is legally for sale in a store in my city why complain.
As far as quality it is pretty good. New York Columbia recordings from 1959 can be fine. And Jazz does not get processed to sound good on AM Radio. This one is half speed direct metal mastered. One forum guy screamed that DMM sucked and had no Bass. Not my experience. Be that as it may it is a musical Icon work. Some consider it to be the most important Jazz album ever. I do not want to go looking for ancient and rare LPs in bins. Fresh heavy vinyl is better.
There are some interesting effects in the recording. I have to listen again to track them down. The original was three track tape. I am pretty sure there are overdubs in there. Whatever it is good music.
That is the point right?

Vinyl vs. Digital: Which gives best sound quality
In the realm of music appreciation, few topics stir as much passionate debate as the comparison between vinyl records and digital audio formats. Vinyl enthusiasts argue for the warmth and authenticity of analog sound, while digital proponents tout the convenience and clarity of modern technology. Both sides have valid points, but the question remains: which truly offers the best sound quality?
The Resurgence of Vinyl
In recent years, vinyl has experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity. Audiophiles and casual listeners alike have been drawn to the tactile experience of handling vinyl records, as well as the nostalgic allure of analog sound. Advocates of vinyl often praise its warm, rich tones, attributing these qualities to the unique characteristics of the format.
The Analog Advantage
One of the primary arguments in favor of vinyl is its analog nature. Unlike digital audio, which is comprised of discrete, quantized samples, vinyl records store sound as continuous waveforms etched into grooves. Proponents of vinyl argue that this analog process results in a more natural and dynamic listening experience, with nuances and imperfections that add to the music's charm.
The Vinyl Ritual
Beyond sound quality, vinyl aficionados often extol the ritualistic aspects of playing records. From carefully selecting an album to delicately placing the needle on the groove, the process of playing vinyl is seen as a deliberate and immersive experience. This tactile engagement with the music is thought to deepen the listener's connection to the art form.
The Digital Age
On the other hand, digital audio formats have become ubiquitous in the modern era. CDs, MP3s, and streaming services offer unparalleled convenience and accessibility, allowing listeners to enjoy vast libraries of music with the click of a button. Digital audio also boasts advantages in terms of portability and durability, with no risk of scratches or warping.
The Clarity of Digital
One of the key arguments in favor of digital audio is its clarity and precision. Unlike vinyl, which is susceptible to surface noise and degradation over time, digital recordings can faithfully reproduce the original sound without degradation. Proponents of digital argue that this fidelity allows for a more accurate representation of the artist's intent, free from the distortions inherent in analog playback.
The Role of Technology
Advancements in digital audio technology have further blurred the lines between analog and digital sound. High-resolution formats like FLAC and DSD offer audio quality that rivals, and in some cases exceeds, that of vinyl. Additionally, digital audio players and streaming services now offer features like lossless compression and high-quality DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters), further enhancing the listening experience.
The Subjectivity of Sound
Ultimately, the debate between vinyl and digital audio comes down to personal preference. While some listeners may prefer the warmth and nostalgia of vinyl, others may prioritize the convenience and clarity of digital formats. Moreover, factors such as equipment quality, mastering techniques, and room acoustics can all influence the perceived sound quality, making it difficult to declare a definitive winner.
Conclusion: Finding Harmony
In the end, the question of which format offers the best sound quality may be less important than the enjoyment derived from the music itself. Whether spinning a vintage LP or streaming the latest album on a smartphone, what truly matters is the emotional connection forged between the listener and the music. As technology continues to evolve, perhaps the best approach is to embrace the diversity of formats and appreciate each for its unique contributions to the world of audio reproduction. After all, in the symphony of sound, there's room for both vinyl and digital to coexist harmoniously. Source: vinyl v/s digital which sounds better

Alexander Von Schlippenbach — Globe Unity (Corbett Vs. Dempsey)
Tumblr media
youtube
The Globe Unity Orchestra notched more than a few accolades. It was the first European free jazz big band, and in retrospect, the first improv supergroup. During a history that spanned over 20 years of fairly steady work and a more recent pattern of convening every ten years, it has carried a standard for concerted international effort to improve the world through the transmission of sonic energy. They didn’t call it Globe Unity for nothing; its ranks were a model of multi-national cooperation, and it traveled far from its birthplace in Germany, thrilling and outraging audiences in locales as distant as Chicago and New Delhi.
Composer, pianist and lead Alexander von Shlippenbach didn’t necessarily have all of that in mind when he put the first GUO together. He didn’t even call it that; “Globe Unity” was just the name of the first piece it played. In the mid-1960s, he was part of a circle of musicians who had already been contributing for some time to the loosening and intensifying of jazz’s strictures in Europe. But he was not one who chose to forsake all he had learned in the process. Born in 1938, his post-war education included tutelage in classical composition, as well as a personal affinity for modern jazz. The two side-long pieces on this LP represented attempts to incorporate the sounds of free music into extent jazz and classical orchestral forms.
When this music was first performed at the 1966 Berlin Jazz Festival, Schlippenbach combined the top German free jazz combos — the Gunter Hampel Quartet, Manfred Schoof Quintet, and Peter Brötzmann Trio. The next month, he recorded “Globe Unity” and “Sun” in Cologne. The personnel list is a heavy who’s who, and some folks might zero in on the names of the two drummers, Jaki (then spelled Jackie) Liebezeit and Mani Neumeier. In times to come, each would shape the rhythmic content of freak-forward German rock music, in Can and Guru Guru respectively. But that’s not what they played here. In concert with Schlippenbach, who played tubular bells, gongs, and both the interior and keys of his piano, and vibraphonist Karl Berger, they provided a multi-hued manifestation of otherness and density. The two bassists added as much seething presence as pulse. Sometimes dramatic, other times exotic (which was not viewed then with the skepticism that it sometimes is now), and only very occasionally swinging, the rhythm section transcended its duties within the big band idiom to contribute immensely to the music’s orchestral qualities.
The horns, however, are what made this music massive. You don’t need the back cover action shot of players in the studio, confronted by overflowing music stands, to know that their united projection was charted out. The time when the orchestra would take on instant composition at an ensemble-wide scale was still a ways off. But by incorporating the broader tonal and timbral resources of the contemporary avant-garde into organized blocks of sound, they achieved a complex and looming sound which was matched at the time only by Sun Ra’s Arkestra. When individual voices cut through, either as breakaway soloists or connecting joints in the multi-segmented compositions, they functioned both as foci for the energy and agents of structural cohesion. 56 years on, it’s still thrilling.
Globe Unity has gone in and out of the print since its first release by SABA in 1967, and this its return to the physical realm is welcome. This edition, licensed by the historically astute Corbett Vs. Dempsey imprint, is confined to limited CD and LP editions that recreate the original LP’s gatefold sleeve. It’s gorgeous, but one has to point out that anyone who is likely to buy a CD is also unlikely to be able to read Schlippenbach’s much-reduced liner notes unless they supplement their normal corrective eyewear with a magnifying glass. Old eyes would benefit from either a fold-out insert or an online resource. But music like this is for hearing more than reading, and this reissue sounds gloriously present and alive.
