Practicing chords on #violoncellodaspalla To make chords sing, it is necessary to minimize the amount of bow used on the bass notes to allow more bow for the melody notes to sing. Often string players spend too much bow on the bass, leaving very little bow for the melody. This is due, at least in part, to slow careful practice and diligent tuning of the bass notes. To train the optimal bow allocation I practice as follows: 1) exaggerate the desired bow allocation by playing the bass notes super slow and with very little bow. Increase the bow speed after the break to the melody notes. 2) Now the bass notes are clear and focused and the melody notes have plenty of bow to sing. This also heightens the sense of counterpoint as the bass and melody notes have slightly different timbre as a result of the differing bow speeds. Additionally, the chord break is much easier lower in the bow where the hair is more flexible than in the middle. With its 5 #strings #stringcrossings on #violoncellodaspalla are challenging. I use #etude no 7 by #kreutzer for practice. Here’s what I do (3 videos): 1) End each note on the next note, then wait before playing it. This ensures both the left hand finger and the bow hair are prepared in advance of each note. ~swipe left~ 2) Repeat each note. This creates more time to prepare each string crossing in the mind while reducing the amount of time given to the actual change of strings. Use the time offered by the repetition to plan each string crossing. Accomplish each change of strings quickly and with a smooth natural motion. My favorite way to practice triple & quadruple stops! (2 videos) 1) Play the bottom two notes of each triple/quadruple stop with small circular bows several times before playing the complete chord. Ensure the entire arm is involved - hand and elbow should trace the same size circle. Here’s a fun metronome drill to develop a strong sense of pulse as well as musical freedom and insights into phrasing! Swipe left for each stage! I begin the practice with many clicks per measure. Rhythm from note to note is strict. For each stage, I reduce the number of clicks and increase the tempo slightly. Using progressively fewer clicks gradually transfers the rhythmic responsibility from the metronome to me! By the time I get to the fewest number of clicks, I’m in a stage of intense but relaxed concentration — almost zen!The rhythm is accurate but not “beat-y” or “metronomic”. I become aware of the strong and weak beats and learn where I may want to emphasize and deemphasize beats to support long flowing phrases. In faster movements, depending on the meter, I may end up with clicks every other measure.
