Using my #twinklebow #tinybow to practice #allegroassai (#3rdmovement ) from #violinconcerto in #aminor #bwv1041 by #jsbach The 2+1 slur pattern and #stringcrossings throughout this movement are challenging. I find it easiest to play in the lower half with the motion coming from the upper arm combined with some finger colle action. Playing near the frog makes the landings after the quick up bows easy and places the string crossings near the balance point of the bow. I love practicing with my twinkle bow because I can experience the lower half stroke I want without having to wonder if I’m low enough in the bow! This effectively changes the meter of the piece. I practice rhythmically, as if #johannsebastianbach had composed it this way! This accomplishes the following: 1) Ensures the main beats receive energetic #vibrato . These notes often occur after #stringcrossings and/or shifts, or as the first notes of slurs — all conditions making vibrato inconvenient. If these notes are not vibrated/emphasized, false accents often occur and the piece sounds unsteady, not lively, and not like a #jig 2) This variation also exaggerates the musical motion to each downbeat, making the movement energetic, lively, and rambunctious! Here’s what I do (3 videos): 1) End each note on the next note, then wait before playing it. This ensures both the left hand finger and the bow hair are prepared in advance of each note. ~swipe left~ 2) Repeat each note. This creates more time to prepare each string crossing in the mind while reducing the amount of time given to the actual change of strings. Use the time offered by the repetition to plan each string crossing. Accomplish each change of strings quickly and with a smooth natural motion. Practicing a complex #violin bowing and #stringcrossing pattern in #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay (mm 133-152). Three videos: 1) First I practice the slur pattern using a customized version of #perpetualmotion by #shinichisuzuki from #suzukiviolinschool #book1 I modify this piece to create a 6/8 meter in which I can practice the bowing pattern in this passage, making sure to accent slightly and vibrate the main beats. I also change the key to A minor. Any etude will do, but I like to keep things simple so I can focus on the bowing right away without having to learn a new piece. Students who regularly review Suzuki repertoire will be able to learn this version in a few practice sessions, if not after a few minutes. ~swipe left~ 2) String crossings - there are many “drops” to the E string, usually for a repeated open E. It is essential that the entire arm drop to the E string even though this passage is fast. This ensures the best control and tone quality throughout. I announce the string crossings out loud as follows: “Drop” - arm drops to E string “Reach” - hand reaches to a lower string. Notice how it’s just my hand. My forearm doesn’t go up to the lower string. Announcing the string crossings out loud engages more of the brain and makes the practice more thoughtful and powerful. It also slows students down so they think about what they’re doing! ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version - The bowing and string crossing patterns are organized. Tone is pure on all strings.
