How Will Everyone Around Him Live? (Grief in CFC)

And also the symbolism of chapter 158. 

If you think about it, Xie Qingcheng has never healthily grieved in his entire life--his parents' death upended his entire world several times over (becoming a parent to his younger sister, getting physically injured himself trying to solve the crime, getting a strange disease, and more), and then Qin Ciyan's too. He can't understand how loving someone is itself a comfort that keeps a person alive even after death. He can’t, because he’s not even allowed to grieve Qin Ciyan with love--he can’t visit his gravestone, he insulted him after his death to save others, and more. 

Basically, Xie Qingcheng’s policy on grief is to just obsess over it and never move on. His dream shows him what he must do, not just in terms of embracing He Yu but in terms of his relationships with others--but which he has not done: 

In reality, Xie Qingcheng is still chasing his parents, and we know where that leads: getting run over and almost killed himself. 

Honestly, in personality, Xie Qingcheng is just as obsessive as He Yu, but in a different sense. When Xie Qingcheng lectures He Yu about his obsession making him unstable, about him losing himself to madness because of this obsession, he really ought to look in a mirror, because what he says can truly apply to himself, except his obsession has continued for over twenty years at this point:

Xie Qingcheng, of course, could not let him get out of control, but instead, he stared at him closely and asked him, “He Yu, what’s on your mind, can’t you say it? You already know how serious your situation is, why do you still want to suppress yourself?

Of course, this mimics the lines Anthony has been feeding He Yu from even before He Yu realized he loved not just Xie Qingcheng’s body, but his soul:

So basically, ignoring it doesn’t help. But there’s nuance here. because neither does obsessively clinging to it. (Side note: it’s funny to me that. He Yu’s new doctor is named Anthony--in Catholicism, Anthony is the patron saint of lost causes.) In order to not only realize his own feelings, but for Xie Qingcheng to fall in love with him, too, He Yu has to symbolically let Xie Qingcheng go: firstly by telling him he won’t force him anymore, and then by trying not to burden him with his love. 

“I know you’ve been resisting me and rejecting me after that incident at the clubhouse, otherwise you wouldn’t have not answered a word to me when I asked you for help.”

Xie Qingcheng is silent.

“You go back, Xie Qingcheng.”

“We are both victims of rn-13, I will accompany you to investigate what should be investigated, even if you do not care about me at all, I will not change my actions, you do not have to worry.”

“……”

“You go back. ” He Yu said. 

But Xie Qingcheng doesn’t get that. Yes, he’s realized he loves He Yu, but unlike He Yu, Xie Qingcheng doesn’t immediately get how loving him can help He Yu. Xie Qingcheng really thinks that if He Yu loves and loses him, He Yu will be just as broken as he's become post the loss of his own loved ones: broken in body, broken in heart, broken in mind. 

However, we already know that’s not He Yu’s perspective:

The reality is that a strong bridge outlives the person who built it. 

Now, I don’t personally think either Xie Qingcheng or He Yu will die (permanently) in the novel, but I do think that He Yu’s perspective is the one that is healthier here, and the one Xie Qingcheng needs to grow to embrace. (The thing is you can’t do that if you’re dead too, so Xie Qingcheng has to live, and He Yu has already sacrificed himself so many times for Xie Qingcheng only to have the narrative be like “nope” that it isn’t going to magically stick in the climax; hence they’ll both live on to suffer through this crazy thing called life.) 

So how will Xie Qingcheng grow in this area? To grow, he needs to confront the roots of his trauma. His trauma is losing Qin Ciyan and his parents, and specifically it all starts from his parents. The organization must be defeated. 

But... 

But, will getting justice for his parents really help heal Xie Qingcheng? While I don’t doubt he’ll find out what happened and all, I sincerely doubt it will help him in any sense. 

However, considering the fact that He Yu was born around the same time his parents died this is Meatbun so it isn’t a coincidence and the death of his parents and He Yu’s birth are certainly not just linked somehow, but inextricable from one another, it would be a great opportunity for Xie Qingcheng to take the life (lessons and love and bravery) that came from his parents’ death (probably literally embodied in He Yu) and cling to that rather than continue to wallow in his own destructive grief. 

Plus, Xie Qingcheng only seems to get insight into himself when he looks at He Yu (like @dangermousie​ says here, “Their needs and damage... so perfectly compliment each other”; looking at each other not only offers greater clarity into their own perceptions of themselves, but also offers challenges to grow in the exact ways they need to grow). 

For example, if we look at the confession scene, Xie Qingcheng is about to leave forever and tells He Yu:

“I’m sorry, He Yu, it was me you met, not the doctor at Qin Ciyan.”

“I was never able to become like him.”

“…… I can’t change anything. I didn’t save you either.”

He Yu then confesses, and Xie Qingcheng stays. He Yu is Xie Qingcheng’s bridge as much as Xie Qingcheng is He Yu’s bridge. But, Xie Qingcheng also has some other insight in this seemingly simple statement: he can’t change anything.

He can’t bring his parents back. He can’t be Qin Ciyan. He can’t save He Yu; He Yu needs to save himself, but what Xie Qingcheng can do is hold out a hand. Xie Qingcheng has thus far only realized this when it comes to being unable to save He Yu, and even then he’s currently still trying to negotiate with himself that He Yu’s wellbeing entirely hinges on his being alive, and not on his love. So Xie Qingcheng kinda needs to apply this acknowledgement to other aspects of his life, and really he can only grow through living with He Yu side by side. 

But He Yu’s probably about to disappear into the clutches of the organization, so, y’know, get thy sh*t together Xie Qingcheng.

What is it?

Greenwashing (Feinstein, 2013) is a term refers to false or misleading representation that products, brands, or corporate practices are beneficial to the environment. Scholars and environmental organizations define as broad range of practices as greenwashing, including false assertions and claims that exaggerate, misdirect, or mislead consumers as to the environmental qualities of a product.

Where was it come from?

Increased media attention to environmental issues beginning in the late 1980s heightened environmental awareness among American consumers. Surveys conducted in the early 1990s revealed a large majority of Americans worried about the environment and were willing to adjust their buying behaviors to benefit environmental quality. Rather than relying on government regulations and advices as the means of environmental protection, consumers began to believe that individual could help the environment through their own actions. Consequently, companies engaged in selling goods and services quickly capitalized on the rapidly growing marketplace  for ecologically friendly products.(Feinstein, 2013)

What make a product or a brand guilty of Greenwashing?

When a product or a brand being advertised using one or more of the following techniques will classified in the 7 sins of greenwashing (Sylvie, 2009): 

1. Hidden Trade-Off: Labeling a product as environmentally friendly based on a small set of attributes (e.g., made of recycled content) when other attributes not addressed (e.g., energy use of manufacturing, gas emissions, etc.) might make a bigger impact on the eco-friendliness of a product as a whole.

2. No Proof: Making an environmental claim without providing easily accessible evidence on either the label or the product website (e.g., a light bulb is touted as energy efficient with no supporting data).

3. Vagueness: Using terms that are too broad or poorly defined to be properly understood (e.g., an "all-natural" cleaner may still contain harmful ingredients that are naturally occurring).

4. Irrelevance: Stating something that is technically true but not a distinguishing factor when looking for eco-friendly products (e.g., advertised as "CFC-Free," but since CFCs are banned by law this is unremarkable).

5. Lesser of Two Evils: Claiming to be greener than other products in its category when the category as a whole may be environmentally unfriendly (e.g., an organic cigarette may be greener, but, you know, it's still a cigarette).

6. Fibbing: Advertising something that just isn't true (e.g., claims to be Energy Star Certified, but isn't).

7. Worshipping False Labels: Implying that a product has a third-party endorsement or certification that doesn't actually exist, often through the use of fake certification labels.

In a 2010 study,it investigated the claims of 4,744 "green" products carried in stores across the USA and Canada, finding that over 95% of these products were guilty of greenwashing. 

The main categories of greenwash products are health and beauty products(21%), cleaning products(18%), homewares(14%), and office products(14%), which took over 65% of the total greenwashing consumer products in the market. It shows us, as consumer, I can hardly escape from buying greenwash products our daily purchase.( The sin of greenwashing, 2010)

It is understandable why so many companies eager to use greenwashing in their advertising campaign. The primary objective of a corporate is to maximize profit and boost the share value to its shareholders. As long as the activities engaged are legal and profitable, the management and the shareholders would not complain. However, in the last 2 decades, the rapid growth of technology brings consumer to a closer look of what they purchased. I believe if a company still using greenwashing in its advertisement to mislead its customers, the negative consequences will not only be the drop of its sale figure, but also the risk of losing company reputation. 

 A real example showing a product using greenwashing in its advertising campaign. 

Fiji water using green and fresh packing label, environmental concern slogans such as "Every drop is green", "Bottled at the source, untouched by man" to mislead consumers by buying their product is an environmental friendly action. The company did not mention the environmental footprints it caused by transporting the products from Fiji to all over the world and it did not tell the truth that over 47% of Fijians did not have access to clean drinking water. 

What corporate can do to avoid greenwash?

The key word is transparency. Patagonia, an activist outdoor clothing retailer, put "struggle to become a responsible company” as its sustainability mission. The company does not sugar coat the use of chemicals or that fact that it leaves a footprint. 

What consumers can do to avoid being greenwashed?

An environmental journalist Adria Vasil gives us some tips: 

1. Never judge a book by its cover: the word such as “eco-friendly” or "natural product” does not mean the real thing.

2. Look for specifics: check the percentage of the eco-friendly ingredient, if it only contain 5% of the specific ingredient, it is not very eco-friendly.

3. Look for ingredient: if a company willing to tell you the ingredient of the product, you will have some idea what you are actually buying.

4. Look for third party certification: check if the product is certified under an international center such as "Green Seal” or “Environmental Choice”.

It is time to be a smart consumer and put in action to protection our planet Earth.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Match Preview- 8th December

Chelsea come into this game low in confidence after their shock 2-1 loss midweek against Wolves at the Molineux.

They will be looking to shock the Champions when they host them at Stamford Bridge this Saturday in the late kick off.

Chelsea will be happy to be playing Manchester City at home, as their home record is much better at this moment then their away record. If this game was at the Etihad Stadium, it would be less likely that Chelsea would take anything off City, due to City's home form being so good, and the Blues having a recent poor run away from home in the Premier League.

Chelsea have lost their last 2 away games in the Premier League- away to Tottenham  and Wolves.

On the Other hand, Manchester City come into this game on the good form, on the back of their tight 2-1 away win against Watford.

City will be looking to maintain their 2 point gap over Liverpool over the weekend with a win at Stamford Bridge.  Chelsea however will be looking to maintain their place in the top 4 with a surprise win against the title favourites.

Betting Odds/My Prediction

Unsurprisingly, Bet 356  have made Manchester City favourites to pick up a win at Stamford Bridge this Saturday with a City winning being priced at 19/20. A draw between these two sides is being priced at 14/6, and a Chelsea win is being priced at 3/1.

My realistic prediction for this game is a 1-3 Manchester City win. Manchester City look unstoppable this season and i think that they will be too much for Chelsea. They will most likely expose Chelsea's weaknesses in defence like Tottenham did recently in their 3-1 over Chelsea.

However my Optimistic prediction for this game is a 2-2 draw. There's no explanation for this... just hope!
