Was Odin testing Xehanort here?

I’m starting to wonder if the Child of Destiny is supposed to have the ability to banish darkness/dark entities from people’s hearts.

I say this due to Odin’s wording in the scene where Xehanort strikes Baldr down:

Odin: This is our only chance.

Odin: Xehanort, rid him of the darkness!

I used to misremember this scene as Odin encouraging Xehanort to deal the finishing blow on Baldr, but no, judging by Odin’s phrasing here, he was actually asking Xehanort to save Baldr from the darkness.

But isn’t that a strange thing for Odin to ask of Xehanort? Odin is no doubt a much stronger Keyblade wielder than Xehanort due to his experience and age, so if banishing the darkness from Baldr’s heart via a Keyblade was ever a viable option, wouldn’t Odin have done that himself? Either here and now or before everything went wrong? Why is he entrusting that to an underclassmen who’s still in training? Especially when the spirit of Hoder, an upperclassmen on the cusp of graduating into a Keyblade Master, is standing right there? (I have to imagine he can see her there the same way Xehanort and Baldr can, especially when you consider similar scenes from KH1 and KH3.) Like, it makes sense for Eraqus to ask Xehanort to banish Baldr’s darkness, because Eraqus is desperate and doesn’t know any better, but Odin?

Instead, it almost seems like Odin was hoping for a miracle, hoping that Xehanort would, somehow, have the ability to banish Baldr’s darkness. If Odin secretly knows who Xehanort is, knows that he’s the chosen child who was sent away to Destiny Islands, then maybe the prophecy states somewhere that the Child of Destiny is supposed to be able to save people from the darkness, and Odin was hoping that Xehanort would demonstrate that ability here and now. Both as a means of saving Baldr and as a means of proving that Xehanort is, in fact, the chosen one as they suspected. Keep in mind this detail from the finale Q&A where Nomura says that Odin was entrusted with a task that aligns with the Blue Robed Figure, implying that Odin is somehow involved in all of this Child of Destiny stuff (excerpt taken from KHInsider, translated by Goldpanner):

Q9: What did Master Odin mean at the end when he spoke of a "teacher" and a "cruel fate"?  A9: Master Odin himself once had a master who taught him, naturally. His master entrusted him with a certain duty - parts of this align with that of the blue robed figure. This will be revealed in detail in Missing-Link, which depicts a later period. 

(Odin mentioning his teacher during this scene is exclusive to the Japanese dialog, as far as I know.)

But of course, Xehanort is not the chosen one, didn’t have the ability to banish Baldr’s darkness, and thus couldn’t save Baldr in the end despite his best efforts to do so, instead choosing to just kill Baldr when he ran out of options. So when Odin responds to Xehanort killing Baldr with “Destiny can be so cruel.” maybe he was referring to how unfortunate it is that Xehanort wasn’t the Child of Destiny after all like they were hoping. Because if he WAS, then maybe all of this could have been prevented.

Of course, this then begs the question: "Why didn’t Odin try to get Xehanort’s help earlier in the story?", but maybe it’s like the Power of Waking where you have to learn it through your experiences and it’s not something you just inherently have access to. Maybe a high-stress, high-stakes situation like this is the only way to manifest the ability. I don't know.

I think this might also give more context to Xehanort removing Vanitas from Ven in BBS. If Xehanort thinks he’s the Child of Destiny, and discovered that the chosen one should have the ability to remove the darkness from people’s hearts, that might have motivated him to try and demonstrate that ability to prove himself. But since he probably doesn’t actually have that ability, the separation process was flawed and resulted in two imperfect halves of a whole, with Ven falling into a coma and his heart becoming fractured.

Vidar and the others deciding to leave just in the hopes of finding anything that can help...yeah that makes sense! Makes me wonder what their initial plan might've been before Kingdom Hearts, if they had one at all. Maybe going after Maleficent again to try and get information out of her/get revenge too?

Oh, and thank you for reminding me about Baldr's "time to heal" line. After I made this addition to your post my head started spiraling when I realized "Wait, maybe because of the whole 'time flows differently in each world' thing it actually is possible that not much time passed in Scala compared to the other worlds", but no, Baldr's comment does make it seem like multiple days had passed since Odin's lie about Baldr being given a different mission. Phew. My head was hurting trying to comprehend the alternative.

in general:

I think the precise chronology/when exactly the discussions between Odin and Vidar happen is a super interesting topic.

We know Odin delayed declaring the upperclassmen missing for like, a full week, so tbh no matter when you think those take place those are fascinating.

Like, considering the lack of postmarking them as being a week ago or what have you like the other scenes, the one where Vidar came back to say 'goodbye' (either due to going on the test that happens, and thus before Hoder loses her life) but gets derailed/cut off by Odin talking about true darkness is. a lot.

Like, if you think it happens before the upperclassmen leaving:

-Odin already knew some awful stuff was likely to happen. This is backed up by Baldr's properly timemarked thing where he says the way the upperclassmen's test is being handled, it sounds like the teachers don't think all of them will come back.

If you think it happens after/happens after the upperclassmen go 'missing', on account of there being no formal time mark on that specific to indicate any other time than 'exactly during the main timeframe indicated, just elsewhere':

-Vidar respects Odin deeply enough to still try and make a formal 'yeah leaving forever bye' before going off on his attempt to avoid slaying Baldr (against Odin's advice, at that), and still gets interrupted/cut off like that.

a taste of something new — 35. long night

a/n: hehe. that's all i have to say. the last part of this chapter was part of a completely different chapter but i had to discard it so i recycled the important part and turned it into this mess. enjoy!

Stupid.

That's what he is. The most utterly, disgustingly stupid person on the whole fucking planet. 

What was he even thinking when he agreed to do this? What does he think is gonna happen when you come back? Will he really be able to "go back to normal", whatever normal is in this situation?

He looks at his phone that's just sitting there beside him on that couch. Deep down he hopes he'll hear another ding, one that brings better news than the information that you're leaving for the night and you'll be back on the next day. 

This is so dumb. 

If he could at least do something else to keep his mind busy, but his options are extremely limited. If he starts playing any online games, his friends will immediately know he's not with you when he's supposed to be out of town, seeing nicer places with his loving girlfriend as a way to celebrate your two-month anniversary a few days early. And for that exact same reason, he also can't call Yeonjun to complain about the current events. He just has to suck it up and sit there in front of his television, watching whatever the hell Netflix suggests, but even that feels like an impossible task, because he keeps seeing you.

You're there, you're everywhere in that stupid movie. You're in the daisies used for decoration in the room, you're in the main character's cat's clinginess, you're in the coffee the protagonists share, you're in the heated make-out session they have at some point for no stupid reason other than their own hormones acting up.

It wouldn't be so bad to be away from you if he didn't know what you're up to. 

You're about to go somewhere and find someone else to hook up with, because he's not actually your boyfriend and you wouldn't want to use him and break his heart, and while you deserve some props for at least having the decency to think like that, it's still annoying how the thought of you touching someone else irks him to his bones.

With a frown that you'd most definitely make fun of, he decides to stop the movie and switch to Haikyuu, because he'd rather rewatch anime boys playing volleyball for the millionth time than have intrusive thoughts poking his mind.

Odi is playing on his lap when the notification sound coming from Soobin's phone nearly makes him accidentally push the hedgehog to the floor. Nearly. 

He reaches for it hurriedly, his mind racing at the possibility of what it might be, but it turns out to just be a discount coupon from the local delivery app. 

The phone is tossed at the nearest cushion, and the sudden movement is enough to startle poor Odi and make him hiss.

"Sorry, little dude," Soobin says, petting the animal's head softly to calm it down. "Your mom is just giving me a headache." The hedgehog doesn't look interested at all in whatever drama his owner has going on, but that doesn't stop the man from complaining anyway. It's not like he can talk to anyone else. "Maybe I should just tell Yeonjun about this. I'm sure he won't tell the others, and at least I'll be able to talk to someone." A tired sigh escapes from his lips. "Or I can just keep talking to you, right?"

The television is long forgotten, though there's still an episode of the anime playing on the screen. Nothing can hold his attention for too long, so he concludes he should probably give up on the idea of watching something. 

After turning off the TV and returning Odi to his playpen, Soobin goes to his bedroom and grabs a pen and the old notebook he uses for his lyrics.

Going through the pages, he finds multiple unfinished works. There's that Christmas song he told you about on your date at the botanical garden, another song without a title, and the first draft for Maze In The Mirror, which he discarded after coming up with better lyrics for it. Maybe he should write something about being a wimp, right? That's all that he is, apparently.

10:29 PM

Somehow, he finds the right flow to write something and manages to keep his mind busy. The lyrics sound a bit too emo for his liking, and that makes him feel like he's overreacting, but at least he could find a distraction that works better than what the television had to offer.

Of course, that doesn't stop his heart from racing all over again when his phone buzzes on the desk, just for his face to drop in disappointment when he sees the contact name on the screen. However, he still decides to reply, for some odd reason. 

Unfortunately, regret hits him as soon as he understands what the texts are about. He ends up contacting you anyway, just to be safe.

"Have fun," he mocks himself and rolls his eyes. "Yeah, have some fucking fun out there while I–" 

Another buzz, another rush, but it turns out to just be a tweet from Beomgyu about the date he just had with Yeji, because of course Choi Beomgyu would turn out to be better than him at this. Of course Beomgyu would get the girl he likes, because he actually knows how to charm people without having to fake it in exchange for money.

Soobin should just take a long shower and try to force himself to sleep, right? This night is gonna be way too long if he doesn't. So he puts his stuff away and goes to the bathroom to do just that, once again doing his best to keep his mind clear.

11:38 PM

He's comfortable in bed, ready to sleep, but he can't quite get to the falling asleep part when his mind seems to be working at a million miles per hour.

"Fuck it," he mutters, grabbing his phone. He opens his chat with Yeonjun, ready to come clean about everything just so he can ask for some advice, but a new notification grabs all of his attention.

Hell, he's so weak.

Yep. Weak and stupid.

He shouldn't really do all of that, but what else would he do? Let you roam around by yourself when you're clearly under the influence of alcohol? If anything happens to you, he'll hate himself for it. More than that, he doesn't want anything to happen, regardless of whose fault it would be, because he cares about you.

Thankfully he sleeps in clothes that are good enough for going outside at nearly midnight, so all he has to do after he leaves his bed is put on a black hoodie that kind of matches his gray sweatpants, put his sneakers on at the entrance, grab his keys and leave.

And while his feet take him to the station, his mind keeps wondering why is it that all it takes is you needing something, anything, for him to go back to being a soft idiot just to make sure you're okay.

12:13 AM

After bringing you to his apartment, he orders the fast-food you wanted so bad while you go shower and change into more comfortable clothes — his own, of course, because you obviously didn't have a change of clothes in your bag. 

It's actually a relief that you're getting cleaned up, because he could smell someone else's cologne on you as soon as he picked you up, and the thought of you getting close enough to some other guy to the point where his perfume would stick to you could quite literally drive him insane, and not in a good way.

These thoughts don't haunt him for too long, though. When he comes back from the door with the food that has just arrived and sees you all curled up on the couch, the only thing in his mind is how adorable you look in his shirt, and he has to fight the smile that tries to creep up to his lips.

"Got your burger," he announces without any hint of emotion in his voice, walking over to where you are.

"Did you get fries too?" Your expectant eyes look up at him, and your hands reach for the paper bag he's carrying. "I'm really, really, reeeeeally craving some fries right now."

"That's something you should've said before I ordered everything," he counters, earning a frown and a pout from you.

"Well, you can't order burgers without fries!" While whining for no reason, you open the bag and start taking the food out. "But I guess this is better than eating by myself. I think I'd choose you over fries anyway, if I had to. Fries won't look at me and complain about how the coffee of a random cafe is not as good as the one they make just because they want to be complimented about how much of a great barista they are or whatever."

He just keeps his arms folded and watches while you go on your little rant, finding some amusement in how you're so focused on frowning and mumbling that you're not even paying attention to the stuff you just put on the coffee table.

"And fries won't take me to a stupid cat cafe or play with my sister, too," you go on. "Fries aren't very good friends, if you think about it. They just get eaten and disappear. I mean, yeah, you're annoying sometimes, and I think we're kinda mad at each other, but at least you're not a fry. I think you're a good friend." 

"Should I send these back, then?" His head nods at the fries you somehow didn't even see, and as soon as realization dawns on you, your eyes widen.

"Oh my God, you're the best." Hurriedly, you grab a few of those for yourself and shove them in your mouth. "Ohhh, these are so good!"

He covers his lips with the back of his hand and pretends to cough just to hide his smile. Of course he wouldn't leave you without your precious fries.

"Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, I'm gonna get us some soda, be right back. You can pick the movie tonight," he says, although it's probably a bad idea to leave you in control of anything while you're not sober, but… well. It's better than thinking about you in someone else's arms.

12:47 AM

It's impossible to stay mad at you when you're like that. You keep commenting excitedly about the scenes of that movie you've watched a million times, pointing out your favorite moments, and eating like a child. Any resentment that Soobin could be carrying up until that moment gets dissolved by your presence. 

It's nice to feel like things are going back to normal, even if it's not exactly what his heart desires.

You don't last very long, though. One moment you're watching the explosions on the screen, the next you're fast asleep on Soobin's shoulder. His body tenses up as soon as he feels your head plopping down on him, and he's too scared to move an inch and risk waking you up. 

After a moment, he finally reaches his hand to fix your hair, sighing at the sight of you so comfortably using his body as your personal pillow. You drive him crazy sometimes, but maybe he should appreciate the madness that comes along with you. It's different, it's challenging, but it's just as beautiful as you. Maybe he shouldn't complain.

"Y/N," he tries calling you, his voice barely above a whisper, but you don't respond.

With the utmost care, he gets up and collects you in his arms, carrying you all the way to his bedroom, despite struggling a little bit with it. He tucks you in his bed and makes sure you're comfortable and warm, and he may or may not be lingering there for a little longer just to watch you sleep so peacefully. He runs a hand through your hair and smiles to himself when you let out a soft sigh, but when he notices he might be acting like a weirdo, he decides to stop and get away from you.

Just a few hours ago he was mad that you weren't with him, he can't be so stupid to the point of acting like a lovesick teenager right now. Where's his pride? Where's his dignity?

"Babe…" Your drowsy voice calls out just as he's about to leave the bedroom. He halts for a second, but ultimately decides you're probably just dreaming. "Babyyy…" You whine, as if you want attention.

He sighs and stops by the door. You couldn't possibly be calling him by pet names right now, in your sleep, but he decides to try answering anyway.

"Yeah?" 

"Can you get me… another blanket? Hm… I'm still cold…" You drag out your words, and he's 100% sure you're not completely awake, though it's obvious now that you're not totally asleep either.

"Of course," he says softly, ignoring how his heart is racing at the fact you just called him baby for the second time in the same night, and for no reason at all. He keeps telling himself it's probably just the force of habit seeping into your sleepy, not totally sober brain. You call him like that all the time in front of other people, after all.

Still, he does what you asked and adds another layer on top of you to make sure you feel warmer.

"Is that better?" He asks and you sigh contentedly.

"Yeah, much better… Thank you, my baby."

Fuck, his heart is not strong enough for this at all. His ears and cheeks are burning red at this point, and he's thankful you're not truly awake, or else you'd be taking the piss out of him right now, or maybe even making things awkward.

"It's okay. Sleep well… baby." He can feel adrenaline and anxiety dancing together in his chest as soon as the last word falls from his own lips in a whisper, but the corners of your mouth quirk up so prettily that he feels like the embarrassment and the near heart attack are worth it. 

He catches himself thinking that if you really were his girl, he'd gladly peck your lips right now to kiss you goodnight. He'd make sure you know just how precious you are to him, how his life gained colors he didn't even know existed when you barged into it. He'd explain to you why he got so cold over these past few weeks, he'd make you understand that it was just because you make him panic and not know what to do around you, and how that made his walls go up once again.

But he can't think too much about it, so all he does is lean closer and kiss your forehead, then he stands up again to leave you alone.

However, you whine once more, and he bites his lips to stifle the laugh that attempts to escape. He kneels beside the bed and reaches for your hair, stroking it gently. Maybe this will help you relax and sleep better. 

"Just sleep, Y/N… You had a long night," he says as softly as he can. Sure, the long night probably involved making out with strangers, but it was still a long night.

And for a moment you do relax, your body loosens up, your lips part, your breathing is regular and calm. He stays there with you for a few minutes, caressing your hair and watching you with adoring eyes. 

You're so beautiful, he thinks to himself as he traces his index finger between your eyes and down to the tip of your nose. It's a shame you'd never see him in the same way, but he knew what he was getting into when he agreed to help the girl who couldn't stay in a relationship for too long. All of this is his own fault, and he knows it very well.

When you look like you're actually in deep sleep, he moves his hand away, but you whimper and reach for it as soon as it's gone.

"No, Soobin… Baby, please…" You mumble.

Now, Soobin has never been the strongest man around. Once again, he's weak, and you make him even weaker. It's a tragedy, but right now he feels like he likes the mess you make out of his heart, especially when you look so peaceful. And the fact that you just said his name and called him baby just makes his mind race as much as his heartbeat, because maybe that little nickname is something you actually associate with him.

"Do you want me to cuddle with you?" He offers in a whisper, and you hum a positive response. "Okay. I'll just turn the lights off, is that okay? Can you wait for a second?"

"Yeah."

And so he goes against his better judgment and does as promised. After turning off the lights, he finds his way back to his bed and lies with you, bringing you to his chest. He wraps an arm around you and rubs circles on your back very slowly, allowing your soft breathing to become his lullaby, as the rhythm of his heart is enough to keep you in your slumber.

Everything's so quiet and it feels too intimate, and he can only hope you won't remember any of this in the morning. It'd just make everything worse again, and if he has to go back to pretending like nothing's happening to keep you close, maybe that's what he should do after tonight.

How much you want to bet that they didn't want to design + make an asset for Odin's Keyblade Armor so they just had him cast some kind of Light protection spell around himself instead.

But hear me out: I think it would've been cooler/more impactful to give him Keyblade Armor.

A mysterious Keyblade wielder clad in armor shows up to save Xehanort and Eraqus. We can't tell who it is. They summon Master's Defender (!!!) so we're like "Wait who is this?" (afaik canonically we never see Odin wielding this Keyblade before this moment). They save Xehanort and Eraqus and bring them back to Scala. Then we see them dismiss their armor and it's revealed that it was Odin all along.

Idk I just think that would have been more interesting? And would have drawn more attention to what Keyblade he was wielding because we'd be trying to guess at his identity and why he was wielding this Keyblade.

I do like to think that Odin's bad decision-making throughout KHDR (sending the underclassmen out on a dangerous mission they weren't prepared for, isolating Baldr and creating the perfect conditions for his darkness to propagate, telling Vidar how to summon Kingdom Hearts, etc.) was intentional to some degree, if for no other reason than making his character more interesting than "he was just woefully incompetent at his job."

Yeah. It's all suspicious. The timeline (roughly) seems to be something like this:

Darkness Baldr kills Heimdall, Helgi, and Sigrun. We don't know what happens directly after this, but we do know that Vidar "being unable to bring himself to kill Baldr" (paraphrased) was part of Darkness' plan, meaning it was in Darkness' best interest to have Baldr captured. I imagine it may have forced Baldr to pass out or something like that.

(Again, assuming) Vidar, Vala, and Vali make it to Maleficent's castle in search of Hoder and the rest, but only find Baldr. Confused and worried, they bring a passed out Baldr to Odin and explain everything that happened.

Odin, either sensing the darkness inside Baldr or putting two and two together when he hears about where Baldr was found, locks Baldr up on suspicion that he's been compromised by darkness (potentially even True Darkness). He maybe tells Vidar and company that Baldr is a likely suspect in Hoder and the others' deaths, but dialog in Episode 8 suggests that Vidar wasn't completely certain about Baldr's guilt, meaning Odin probably wasn't completely certain either.

Vidar decides to leave Scala and goes to inform Odin of this (for what purpose we don't know, because Odin has yet to tell him about Kingdom Hearts at this point) and here is where the discussion between Vidar and Odin about True Darkness happens. This discussion is split between two cutscenes found in two different episodes, but the end of the first cutscene APPEARS to lead directly into the second, implying that this is ONE scene.

Odin (ambigiously, for the purpose of hiding the Baldr twist) warns Vidar that True Darkness may be stirring after many years of absence. In the second half of this cutscene, he also makes it clear that a vessel of True Darkness must be killed in order to also kill True Darkness. Vidar reacts as you would expect, horrified and upset that sacrificing a friend for the greater good is even being considered as an option. Vidar says that "we've lost enough already" (Hoder and the rest) and that he won't be able to face his friend (Hoder, presumably) if anyone else perishes. Is there any other way?

This is when Odin reveals Kingdom Hearts as an option. Despite Odin reitering several times that Kingdom Hearts is forbidden, he still reveals way too much about how you go about summoning it, which makes it seem like Odin is aware of how his words are going to affect Vidar. Unfortunately, whether or not Odin actually intended for Vidar to pursue Kingdom Hearts, and what Odin's motivations for doing this could possibly be, are both firmly within the realm of speculation. Like you mentioned, the conversation ends with Odin telling Vidar that, rather than pursuing Kingdom Hearts, he must instead study the darkness and learn to recognize the differences between the various types. Which is what Odin presumably does with Baldr while he's locked up for a week, since Odin mentions later how it's his fault that things were going wrong because he failed to figure out in a timely manner whether or not the darkness threatening them was actually True Darkness.

This isn't confirmed, but the underclassmen in Episode 1 make no special mention of Baldr being missing for an extended period of time (i.e., it would APPEAR that Baldr not showing up for class was a recent development) meaning that Odin's conversation with Vidar may have only happened, like, a day before Odin sends the underclassmen out on their mission. Maybe even less. Which also means that yes, like you say, Odin already knew A LOT despite him telling the underclassmen that he was clueless (and the upperclassmen could hardly be called "missing" if Vidar, Vala, and Vali had only left a mere day or so ago). He knew that half of the upperclassmen were already dead, specifically that Hoder was dead, so his excuse about Baldr not being given the same mission so that he wouldn't become needlessly worried about his sister is just a blatant lie. He knew what Vidar and the upperclassmen survivors were up to (or at least, he should have had SOME IDEA given that he was the one who told Vidar about Kingdom Hearts in the first place). And he knew that Baldr was consumed by Darkness, having already locked him up (again, the Baldr absence excuse, blatant lie). It begs the question of what exactly he hoped the underclassmen would achieve on their mission. Perhaps he simply wanted them to locate Vidar, Vala, and Vali for him, or maybe he knew that the underclassmen would be essential to Vidar's plan of finding the seven lights. In the latter case, Odin was lying to and exploiting the underclassmen, giving them a false mission so that they'd have a reason to leave the protection of Scala and become vulnerable.

So yes, to summarize, you are absolutely right that something is off with Odin. Even if the answer is just that he's profoundly incompetent, he's still a liar and can't be trusted.

Just speeding through khdr cutscenes to find the darkness lore when I noticed something in chapter 7.

Vidar did make it back, and he very clearly told Master Odin everything about what happened. Then he gets told about Kingdom Hearts, which he wouldn’t know to fuck up literally everything to try and save Baldr. In that cutscene we also get the vibes of Baldr breached containment but now I’m not so sure. I think that Odin contained Baldr after finding out he was present and then sent the underclassmen out and contained Baldr on the same day make roughly every chapter a day.

So Odin lied to the underclassmen sending them to find the V gang while having Baldr locked up assumedly studying him like he told Vidar to do. He planted the idea of Kingdom Hearts in Vidar’s head and the underclassmen but for them it was more of an explanation as to what Vidar was doing.

I need to know who Odin really is, because everything he has done caused something to go wrong especially since I now think he knew what happened with the upperclassmen and Baldr and still sent out the underclassmen anyway without telling them anything, and this would mean that he already knew Hoder was dead when he gave the excuse of wasn’t going with them.

That’s just what I noticed and theorize.

Going over the KHDR Completion Commemorative Q&A

As requested by @starlightwayfinder a while back.

Nomura saying that the installment was physically going over capacity makes me think that he's talking about the size of the app. As in, they fit as much data as they could onto the app's storage space before reaching a hard limit that couldn't be overcome, leading to them having to "cut the fat" as it were. Which I think would make sense given that (1. KHDR shares space with the KHUX side of the app; they're not two separate apps with two separate storage spaces and (2. both games are completely offline now and thus all the relevant data has to fit on the device itself and none of it can be "streamed" from a server (I assume.)

(Speaking from a very general understanding of how live-service mobile games work; take with a grain of salt...)

KHDR having connections to KHML is kind of a given, but Nomura saying in no uncertain terms that plot details from KHDR will be relevant to KH4 is...interesting, and encouraging. I suppose we could have guessed that given the Child of Destiny stuff, but it makes me wonder what other less obvious details from KHDR will turn out to be relevant down the line. We might be surprised by the plot threads and maybe even...characters? that make a return.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I completely buy his explanation here (even though the "recycling assets to save space/time/money" part makes enough sense from a game dev perspective). Nomura is known for being fickle about the specifics of plot details and changing his mind about things over time; it wouldn't surprise me if he initially conceived Destiny Islands Xehanort to be a young man before deciding Xehanort needed to leave Destiny Islands at a much younger age in order to have the new "spending his teen years in Scala" backstory make sense. But, it's not a big deal; if the "catch-all symbolic representation" thing is the artsy explanation Nomura wants to use to avoid calling it a "retcon", then sure, fuck it, who cares. I don't care.

Seems Nomura was hoping that default male Player would be recognized as merely a default representation of Player (so, not canon, just one of many possible representations) but then realized people were going to take it as canon anyway. Which, yeah of course they would. You're implicitly favoring and legitimizing whatever version you choose to depict in the canon, immutable cutscenes, because the fact you chose it out of all possibilities suggests you prefer it. I'm glad the devs changed the cutscenes to make Player's gender ambigious, though they didn't go far enough to obscure Player's skintone, leading to people having to headcanon that Player is just wearing...light flesh-colored gloves? Frankly: yuck, but here we are. Maybe KHML will retcon this too and do a better job of hiding their skintone.

Also, I'm not sure what Nomura means when he says that Player showed up in Xehanort's "final battle" when they...didn't? Unless by "final battle" he just means the final episode in general? Idk, weird wording there, might be a translation thing.

I get why people felt that the bald explanation was kinda unnecessary and out of left field, but as user isan0rt points out in this post, the distinction between "his hair fell out" and "he shaved it" is actually pretty important from a character analysis perspective. I don't blame Nomura for wanting to further clarify and highlight the Buddhist monk themes at the core of Xehanort's character when, I guess, it was flying over a lot of people's heads (pun not intended).

It's unfortunately just one of those things where Nomura drawing attention to this "lore reveal" in pre-release interviews primed people to take it less seriously than if he had just...put it in the game with no fanfare.

Not sure why Nomura ended the answer talking about the Queen of Hearts and her not remembering Xehanort. I guess because the Mirror managed to remember him after like 60 years and him losing all of his hair but the Queen forgot about him after only, like, four years?

KHML trailer spoilers below.

The KHML trailers say that the Emblem Heartless reach Gothic Scala via the Astral Plane, and well, if KHDR's Emblem Heartless and KHML's Emblem Heartless share the same explanation for their anachronistic presence as Nomura implies here, then I guess the Astral Plane is where the KHDR Heartless are coming from? That's my theory for now anyway. The question just becomes, why were they arriving from the Astral Plane during the events of KHDR? Did somebody...let them in?

But then, "vessel" characters like the Queen of Hearts and Baldr also summon + control Emblem Heartless of their own that seem to originate from within them, so like. The Emblem Heartless situation seems a bit more complicated than just "they're coming from the Astral Plane."

And yes, the question was labeled "O4" rather than "Q4". There was a lot of speculation at the time about what this meant and whether or not Nomura was trying to send a secret message, but to this day we still don't know what this was about, apparently.

"Someone who bears the heart of the Player" is very interesting and specific wording. Is Nomura merely using the word "someone" to indicate that this is an entirely new body and life for Player, or is he using the word "someone" to indicate that this was an entirely different, fully-realized person before Player's heart "took over"?

The rest of this answer is worded...kind of unnaturally and strangely and I have no idea what Nomura is saying here, tbh. Again, might be a translation thing. But Player talking about a "second life" still exists in the most current version of the game, so Nomura can't possibly be talking about patching that line out, right? Like, it's still there! It never got "withdrawn". Unless he changed his mind after this interview?

Though, looking at the "that heart will once again melt into the heart of another person" bit, I think I now see where all those "Sora is reincarnated Player" theories come from?

Not much to say about this one. I still feel like the transition from KHML Scala to KHDR Scala had some magic involved, though. Between the Land of Departure's transformation feature that specifically activates with Master's Defender (turning LoD into a white roomed castle not unlike the white buildings of KHDR Scala), and the two Scalas looking so drastically different, it just makes sense to me.

Nomura isn't wrong here. I do think it's not too difficult to imagine what happened post-KHDR. Though it's still a shame that we didn't get to see those chapters of Xehanort's life.

(I know some people would probably argue that the game shouldn't have been called "Dark Road" in the first place then, if the game was just going to be about the events that led Xehanort to that road, but eh, I feel like that's semantics.)

If there's one thing I can respect and appreciate about the KH series as a whole, it's the commitment to focusing on character relationships. I think it was a good call by Nomura to prioritize depicting Xehanort and Eraqus' friendship in their youth.

Honestly? I actually really appreciate that Nomura seems to give a shit about the KHDR cast and feels genuinely disappointed and apologetic that he couldn't show them off more. Like he could've so easily just been all "Xehanort Xehanort Xehanort" about the game since Xehanort is his favorite OC, his favorite blorbo, but no he actually wanted to give the other characters their time in the spotlight, too. I really want that novel to happen eventually and I'm crossing my fingers for it. Please Square.

For context, apparently in the JP version of KHDR, Odin more directly references his teacher at the end of the game. While in the ENG version...you'd basically just have to guess at the existence of such a person from Odin's line "I finally see the truth of those words." or something? I have no idea why this wasn't made more obvious in ENG if it's more obvious in JP, but the series has been known for sometimes baffling localization choices, so like, eh.

It's interesting to think that Odin might have known Player2 in the past, and that they might have been working together on the Child of Destiny stuff. I fully expect to see a younger Odin in KHML, tbh.

By the way, I think Nomura calling KHML "a later period" is just some poor wording or translation hiccup and he meant to say "earlier"; I don't think he's saying some PLOT TWIST! thing about KHML somehow actually taking place after KHDR. (We'll see if my statement here ages poorly like 5 years from now lol.)

The Q&A response that made the entire "Skuld is Subject X" theory community freak out.

Yeah who the heck knows. "Connected" can mean so many things in this series, and following up that sentence with "Missing-Link is also a story about bloodlines" could be an intentionally misleading non-sequitur on Nomura's part.

Yes I'm speaking from bias because I want Skuld to be Subject X, what of it.

Another question labeled with "O" instead of "Q" as well. Both questions like that so far have been Missing-Link related.

Not much to say on this one. I personally think that Brain is indeed Eraqus' grandfather and I don't imagine Brain and Ephemer's bloodlines overlapping, but we'll see what KHML reveals about Brain's future family.

Oh and I think the secret report this question is referencing (Secret Report 2 from KH3) said "descended from the very first masters in the age of fairy tales" not "master", so it's not specifically talking about like. An individual person who could be considered the one and only "first", like the MoM or Founder Ephemer or something. It's Keyblade Masters from the age of fairy tales in general, at least, the earliest ones to exist. Which can potentially include Brain, I think?

Question 12 was just about when we'd get Missing-Link news, so skipping that one straight into Question 13.

What's interesting about this question and answer is that right below it is the Nomura artwork of Young Xehanort wearing modern clothes in Miyashita Park. Could that artwork then be hinting at what this "good opportunity" might look like?
