I think the reason preteens and teens / young adults gravitate towards shopping sites like temu and shein has to do with how our frontal lobes aren’t fully developed yet. to most of us, the transaction is just that you “pay somebody - you get something in return”. the frontal lobe develops how you think about consequences, so people under ~25 don’t consider that the transaction is more “you pay a company that uses practically slave labor - the people suffer to make your products - you get something in return”.

I work in a burger place, it's American themed so obvs American cheese is a staple in the burgers

customer that just walked in: "where's your menus" as he's stood right next to the 5 foot print out of the menu

same customer: "I want mozzarella cheese on my burger"

me: "we don't have any other cheese than American cheese"

customer: "I'm allergic to that. I want mozzarella"

me: "neato. we don't have that."

customer: "can I buy some from the shop and you put it in my burger?"

me: ".... we can't have outside food in our kitchen due to allergens and every other reason under the sun"
