** Trigger warning **⁠ ⁠ While many Australians see today as a day to celebrate the country's culture, achievements and lifestyle, this date is not a happy one for Australia's Indigenous people. On Jan 26 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip landed on Australian soil with the First Fleet of British ships and this marks the start of the First Nations People being stripped of their sacred land, devastating massacres, stolen children and being oppressed.⁠ To them, they see it as Invasion Day.⁠ ⁠ While you may or may not agree, I hope you can show some empathy and see that whilst the First Nations people still continue to be seen as "other", treated differently and suffering - how can we celebrate, when the work hasn't yet been done?⁠ ⁠ As a non Indigenous person, I don't claim to know everything or have all the answers, but here's some ideas on how you can show your support and be a respectful and useful ally:⁠ ⁠ 1) Make space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' voices. Encourage them and support them to share their experiences and stories.⁠ ⁠ 2) Expand your knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people, history and culture through self reflection, education and listening (Check out blakbusiness.com.au, deadlyandproud.vic.gov.au, indigenousx.com.au, sbs.com.au/nitv, reconciliation.org.au, 989fm.com.au)⁠ ⁠ 3) Speak up against racism. Staying silent means condoning their attitudes and behaviour.⁠ ⁠ 4) Show up outside of Jan 26: being an ally is more than just showing up on 1 day, it's continuous work⁠.
