Always was, always will be. Thinking, especially of all First Nations people, today. I will always be grateful for Australia for welcoming my family when they migrated, here, all those years ago & giving the family opportunities they wouldn't have had back in Sri Lanka, but while feeling grateful for that, I also acknowlege the immense damage colonization has done (& continues to do) in the past 200 odd years in Australia & the harm of celebrating the day the invasion began. The 26th of January is a day of mourning, not of celebrating genocide and we should all support First Nations people in this very simple fact. Many people migrate to "the lucky country", every single day, but just because it may give a better life than other countries, doesn't mean we don't have a long way to go. A very simple way of making this country fairer & truly better is to LISTEN to First Nations people, to truly support them, not just today but every day. - and remember to support the Voice for Parliment when the referendum comes. Australia's First Nations people are the oldest surviving community on Earth, even with the British's attempts which wiped out approx 90% of their population within 10 years after the invasion. Please give them the respect they deserve - and the space to grieve; today & every day. Visit this link (or click BLM Australia in my bio) for ways to support Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander communities: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xabcfdcX9dRNblOtR8UC0mA50aP0G18g_hSIpyTKJ4s/mobilebasic #WhiteAustraliaHasABlackHistory #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #InvasionDay #DayOfMourning #LandBack [ID: yellow text on a pink background, reading "Always was, Always will be."] Posted @withregram • @paranormalwines We stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on Invasion Day and every day. January 26 is a day of mourning and reflection. We celebrate the strength, resilience and survival of the oldest continuing culture on earth. We are closed. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #whiteaustraliahasablackhistory #invasionday #changethedate #treaty #firstnationsvoice #ulurustatement (at Naarm) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn2pCkYyzEw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Nothing makes me more upset to be Australian than the way people behave around Jan 26th. Today shouldn't be a day of celebration. Today should be a day of solemn mourning. There are so many dates that we could #changethedate to.
Australia always was and always will be.

Day #4 of Leahs journey to becoming a mum.
-> I’m due for my period in the next day or two. So I’m not too hopeful that in the two times Bailey & I have tried to procreate, that it would have worked. (How absolutely absurd would it be if it did)
-> I downloaded an app to help me track my cycle & it has a bunch of educational resources. It even says that if I have fallen pregnant during this cycle that we’d be experiencing around Invasion Day- Australia Day which we aren’t too sure if we’d want hahah. (#changethedate) Bailey shares his birthday on ANZAC day and he’d give anything not to.
-> Honest feelings: If I haven’t fallen this cycle I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.

on today, "Australia Day", id like to take a minute and say to all my Australian followers (which I'm pretty sure is only like 2 people), if you celebrate "Australia Day", while being aware of its historical origins, im sorry, i can sugarcoat this: you are an asshole. i understand if you are roped along into family celebrations, but if you yourself go out of your way to celebrate today, you are a horrible person. im sorry. try to fix that, man.
this is not because i hate australia. i love australia. we have a wonderful country. im hella proud to be an australian. or rather, im proud to be an australian every other day. as im sure you know, the issue isnt with the celebration. its with the date of the celebration.
for the majority of my followers in other countries, allow me to elaborate:
australia day, correctly called "Invasion Day" by Aboriginal Australian, is the 26th of January. its the day that captain james cook sailed to australia and """""discovered"""" australia, calling it "Terra Nullius", literally meaning "land belonging to nobody". this, obviously, was false. this was ignoring over 50 000 years of Aboriginal Australians living on this country. 50 thousand years of culture, of life, of stories, of languages, all thrown out with just two words, two words which then allowed europeans to come over and colonise this country. thus began hundreds of years of racism that i dont even have time to get into. (research the stolen generation if you want to know more of australias disgusting past).
in essence, australia day is celebrated like the 4th of july, a celebration of our country, but its on a day with similar historical links to columbus day, in that it represents colonisation, and the destruction of a culture. (i dont know too much about columbus day, but im pretty sure thats an accurate comparison, if not lmk)
Invasion day represents this (Indigenous Australia, with its different groups, each with distinct dialects and cultures):
Tumblr media
turning into this.
Tumblr media
the destruction of a culture. and we celebrate it.
im sure i could put way more information in here, but i tried my best to fit centuries of racism into a readable post. if you are australian, please reblog this. we need to change the date. hell, if you arent australian, reblog this. go ahead. this needs to be shared to people who dont understand what today represents. spoiler alert, its imperialism.

i would also like to send my solidarity and support to Australia’s First Nations people’s on this Day of Mourning. a day that commemorates the start of a genocide is no day to celebrate. may we listen to their stories and be an ally in their mission to #changethedate. this is indigenous land, always was, always will be.

January 26 marks the British naval invasion of the east coast of the continent now known as Australia in 1788. It is an annual day marked by settler-nationalist celebrations and anti-colonial resistance.

“Remember how shit the marriage equality vote was for us queers; having our humanity publicly debated, and hate speech not only permitted but actively platformed by mainstream media and institutions (including a stellar performance by UTAS, who allowed an “it’s ok to say no” event hosted on campus by Cory Bernardi- not that I’m bitter or anything)? Yeah, that sucked.Imagine having to relive that debate. Every. Single. Year.We shouldn’t still have to be having this conversation.” -  Jax Ewin
