Why this time automation is different

We´ve spent the last over a thousand years building tools to reduce physical labour. We created mechanical MUSCLES, that helped economy grow and standards of life rise.

Now, we´ve build mechanical MINDS that are making human brain labour easier.

This is an economic revolution not comparable to the previous ones.

For example, get to know the new kind of automation: Baxter, a flexible robot that learns what you want him to do. He is not pre-programmed to do only one specific job. He can do whatever is at the reach of his arms. Baxter is a “General purpose robot”.

Self-driving cars are the first place where most people will really see the robots changing society. But there are many other places in the economy where the same thing is happening, just less visibly.

Professionals, white-collar workers and low-skill workers all have to worry of automation. Also creative people. This is not science fiction, the robots are here and right now.

This video isn’t about how automation is bad – rather that automation is INEVITABLE. It is a tool to produce abundance for little effort. We need to start thinking now about what to do when large sections of the population are unemployable. What to do in a future where, for most jobs, humans need not apply.
