BEING DISRESPECTFUL AT THE LUCKY GRAVE?

“Zhang Zhehan sat on the grave of Su Xiaoxiao for a picture, arousing the rage of the people (Chinese)” - a Sina news’ title quickly appeared on 13th August after bloggers shared from each other a picture of ZZH visiting a place and taking commemorative pictures there, criticizing his pose of leaning on the grave. However, based on the studies done on this grave, to condemn ZZH as having done inappropriate actions is unfounded and baseless.

Caiting Grave (慕才亭) and the grave of Su Xiaoxiao (苏小小)

Caiting Grave is one the the famous tourist spots in Keshan, Hangzhou. Tourists or people in the area usually visit here, taking pictures, stopping for a rest or wishing for luck before the grave of Su Xiaoxiao (479-502) - a courtesan originating from Qiantang, in the dynasty of the Southern Qi.

There has been a lot of information and arguments over the exact location of Su Xiaoxiao’s grave. But according to the written recording of “Xihu Jin Du Qi (West Lake’s New Journal of Travelling)”, the grave is actually a fake one, having been built days and night under the Tailang bridge under Zhexue’s order to prepare for Emperor Kangxi’s royal examination when the Emperor travelled to the south. Until 1964, many graves including Su Xiaoxiao’s were destroyed, every object buried in these graves had also been taken out. And then in 2004, these objects were put on display, but there was absolutely no information on Su Xiaoxiao’s remains. Afterwards, to preserve and imitate the authenticity of historical characters, the local administration of Hangzhou city decided to rebuilt this grave as an empty one; the surrounding area has been made into a small shrine, called the Caiting Grave. These pieces of information can easily be looked up on Baidu.

Tourists at Caiting Grave

Tourists usually stop at Caiting Grave for a quick rest or to sightsee. They also like to touch or rub their hands on this grave for luck, which is why this place is also called “The lucky grave”. There is no warning sign on any prohibited behaviour or action. The pictures found on Baidu have shown that the atmosphere in this place is pretty pleasant, even loud and cozy at the same time. Many tourists, children, or even the place’s security guards have touched, sat on, climbed on or left their belongings on the the grave. Many of the local residents stop by this place for a quick rest while taking a walk or going out for exercises with their clothes unkempt, dishevelled (Pic 1-4). In fact, in 2001, in the Xihu (West Lake) area including Tailang, a colourful and lively fashion show “Dong Fang Di Guo (The Eastern country with silk)” was held in the Caiting Grave (Pic 5 + link at the end of the post).

***CONCLUSION

As we can see, the grave of Su Xiaoxiao and Caiting Grave have been a part of the local residents’ lives, and it is more of a symbol and a good piece of history than an actual place to worship or formally commemorate someone. Not to mention that this grave is only a fake grave having been rebuilt, completely empty, with the word “grave” or “tomb” can easily be misunderstood by people lacking information. Based on the nature of the grave, the actions of ZZH as well as of other people, tourists are not banned by the local administration, do not show any disrespect to anyone, nor do they violate any social moral standard.

DW Potential Additions Tier List

So I made some spreadsheets but decided I was putting in too much work so here’s a quick summary.

I was grading on a scale of 1-5. 1 was characters I really don’t htink would add anything good, but who I thought some might suggest (like Cao Zhi, Jia Nanfeng, Pan Zhang, Zhao Guang, Zhang Ren, etc.) 2 is people who could maybe work under very specific circumstances, like a big narrative shift or a lot of related characters being added, or who might be fine but aren’t nearly as good as some other options (like Cheng Yu, Cao Xi, Wu Jing, Mi Zhu, or Gao Gan). These don’t really make the cut for discussion, so if you don’t see a name you’re expecting, I probably put them in one of those tiers for some reason.

Tier 3 are characters who would be fine. Just fine. They either did enough to make themselves noteworthy, or have enough of a connecting to existing narrative and cast that they’d probably add something worthwhile. Not the ones I’d be most excited about, but the ones I couldn’t make too many complaints over.

Tier 4 are great adds. Characters I really want to see, who could really expand the cast in worthwhile ways.

Tier 5 are characters I forget aren’t in these games already because why are they not here?

I’m not going to explain every decision here because I’m sure there will be followup questions. Yes, I’m aware that Jin is overrepresented, because it’s the smallest of the main factions.
