Friends and Family
Just some art of my OCs having fun. I originally drew all these with the intent of developing Jules more and define the friendships or connections she'd value. What the vibes were ect. Each pic tells a lil story in its own right.
1st : Pic of the twins (Jules & Jace) on top & Francine and CC on the bottom~ Francine and CC are besties and Jace for a time dated CC and of course Jace brought Jules around for group hangouts. Over time they agreed they were way better as friends than dating but the friend group stayed strong through it all.
2nd : Jules and Sheena during a pride event at the beach getting ice cream. Jules is celebrating her being pansexual and gender queer. Sheena is celebrating her being bisexual and transgender. They're currently dating and have been childhood friends (their families have been connected for a while).
3rd : Jules atop Caster's back and Jace slidin in for the pic hahah Caster is their cousin from their mom's side. Caster uhhh I'd say tolerates the twins but also would kill for them if necessary. Meanwhile the twins love Caster (especially bothering them) and would kill for her haha

Fast WIP Facts:
Lies in a Holy Tongue
Tumblr media
What is this? A stand-alone story crunched down from what used to be a planned trilogy.
Genres? Low-fantasy, in the sense that it’s a queer angel x demon romance but it also takes place in San Francisco.
Characters? Nora, human lesbian who loves plants and baking. Olufemi, the Guardian angel in love with the world. Maluka, the smartass demon who fell into this by accident before committing with their whole heart.
Themes? Faith and love, being queer and Christian, and standing up to power.
Origin story? I got an ask from an anonymous stranger in 2018 and then it took on a life of its own. Average tumblr stuff.
Tagline? What would you do if two strangers claiming to be divine showed up at your door with intimate knowledge of every part of you? Road trip, of course.
Can I find more? Of course! I have wip pages, an ask box, a consistent tagging system, and I check notes religiously. I’m an open book (pun intended)!

Meanderings: Favorite things of the week
I left Africa (Zambia), to go to college here back in 2005, and I have been and continue to stay abreast of trends from my formative days of Kwaito to the rise of GQom and Amapiano. To the early 08's and the rise of Hiplife and early Afrobeats to the worldwide domination of those styles, I have stayed very locked in. Now linked above is Oroko Radio, dedicated to capturing the diaspora in all its youthful excuberance. I work from home and Oroko Radio goes with my early morning cup of Coffee.
I hate love Pitchfork, but they generally have the funds to back solid music journalism, and i love nothing more than a detailed enlightening music review. These Harry Smith, compilations are things of mythological proportions in the world of roots music loves the world over. His compilations where starters guides for me on how to navigate and appreciate msuci as an expression of the human condition. Also the homey Harry Smith, is a very enigmatic character in his own right and this review by Grayson Harver Currin captures all of that.
The above essay by Olufemi Taiwo, represents some of the most refreshing thought regarding african history I have read in a long time. African history is perpetually framed as this hypersimplistic dischotomy between Africa before colonialism and Africa after colonialism. It is as infuriating as the awful ahistorical hotepisms I encounter on a daily basis but thats another conversation. It is an incredibe read for any africanists, historians and people blessed with a general sense of inquisitiveness about the world.

CPJ kicks against conviction of Kwara journalists, seeks judicial reforms
The Committee to Protect Journalists has condemned the conviction of two Kwara journalists, Gidado Yushau and Alfred Olufemi on conspiracy and defamation charges. The PUNCH reports that a Magistrate Court sitting in Kwara State convicted the duo over a false publication about an Agro-allied company based in the state. The publication, “Inside a Kwara factory where Indian Hemp is legalised” was published in the News Digest publication in the 2018 edition. The convicted journalists who worked for News Digest, an online publication, were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and defamation by the court on February 7, 2023 CPJ, an independent, nonprofit organisation that promotes press freedom worldwide described the conviction as “a chilling message to the Nigerian press” on Friday. It also highlighted the urgent need for authorities to reform the country’s laws and ensure journalism is not criminalised. According to the CPJ’s Africa program coordinator, Angela Quintal, the duo should have never been charged, let alone convicted. “Nigerian journalists Gidado Yushau and Alfred Olufemi should never have been charged, let alone convicted, for publishing an investigative report about a factory. “The telecom surveillance used to bring the journalists into custody, followed by a more than three-year-long trial, demonstrates the lengths Nigerian authorities will go to arrest and prosecute the press,” she said. Before charges were filed, CPJ disclosed that police leveraged Yushau and Alfred’s access to call data and briefly detained a News Digest web developer and at least two other journalists in their efforts to locate Yushau and Olufemi. CPJ added that, “The telecom surveillance, along with two similar cases in 2017 and 2018, prompted an ongoing lawsuit against the Nigerian Communications Commission over regulations granting warrantless access to telecom subscribers’ information.” Earlier, while delivering judgement on the matter after about five years of legal battle, the magistrate, Mr A.S Muhammad said, “I have carefully considered the evidence of PW1 (Shakirat Yusuf) on the character of the convicts as well as considered the Allocutus made by learned counsel to the convicts and I have equally reflected on the provisions of sections 316 and 417 of the Kwara State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2018. In compliance with the provisions under S.417 (2) (d) of the Kwara State ACJL, 2018, I shall not pass a maximum sentence on the convicts. “Premised on the forgoing for the offence of conspiracy, I sentence the 1st and 2nd defendants to a fine of N40,000 only each or 2 months imprisonment in default of payment. “On defamation, the 1st and 2nd convicts are sentenced to a fine of N60,000.00 only each or 3 months imprisonment in default of payment. “For clarity, each of the convicts is to pay a fine of N100,000.00 only for the offences of conspiracy and defamation respectively, having been convicted in default of payment, the sentence shall run concurrently. “Rights of Appeal exist within 30 days”, he said. Reacting, the counsel to the journalists, A.S Ibraheem Gambari Esq, insisted that journalists have the right of appeal and that efforts are on top gear towards exercising that constitutional right. Gambari stated that they were still studying the judgement and will do the needful soonest. They noted that if not for some administrative delays in obtaining the Certified True Copy of the judgement from the court’s registry, “the notice of appeal would have been filed by now.” The counsel revealed that “there was evidence before the trial court that the police report which purportedly indicted our clients came into existence even before they were invited by the police. In other words, the police had already found them culpable long before they were invited to state their own side of the story. “Also, an ex-employee of the company testified before the court that he was not only a witness to how smoking of Indian hemp pervaded the site but equally, it was the persistent smoking of the Indian hemp that informed his decision to sever his employment with the company. What’s more, in order to establish the verisimilitude of his assertion, the same witness tendered his bank statement evidencing the receipt of his monthly salaries from the company during the period when smoking was prevalent. It, therefore, remains a conundrum how the court found them guilty in the face of this empirical evidence among others.” Gambari added that they believe that “justice will be achieved at appeal so that patriotic youthful elements in the society like our clients will not be discouraged from embarking on their respective altruistic endeavours.” Read the full article

IS FEMI KUTI JEALOUS OF PETER OBI ? Angry Son Of Fela Says Only Zombies Are Obedient .......... London born Nigerian musician, Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti popularly known as Femi Kuti has expressed his disdain for supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insinuating that they are a group of slavish characters who, like zombies, are incapable of thinking for themselves and making their own decision. The musician said he is a smart and independent minded person who can’t be ordered around like a zombie. Peter Obi supporters are known as “Obedience,” as zombies, he added. Zombie was the title of a studio album released in 1976 by his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, when he excoriated the Nigerian soldiers as a bunch of robotic and senseless individuals. The song, which went on to be one of Fela’s greatest hits, followed a raid on his residence in Lagos at the time. “You know what obedience means? Stand up, sit down, sit there zombie,” Kuti opined during a performance at the Shrine Thursday night in Lagos, wondering why Obi’s popularity has surged exponentially in recent months. “How can you be Obidient in this chaos? I am not Obedient. Tell me, at 60, why am I Obedient? You said I should be Obidient, sit down, be peaceful,” he said. “Are you all okay in this country?” Obi’s candidature has garnered grassroots support from young Nigerians who see him as a better alternative to other candidates in the 2023 contest. Peter Obi's campaign is propelled by a horde of young Nigerians who describe themselves as “Obedient” followers on social media. OK I WOULD KILL 10 MEN FOR ADEYO OLUFEMI????
thank you!!
I'm African, so I've made it my personal agenda to write African characters with agency and complexity and pathos that because that's not something that gets seen very often in Western media. Also, I have to find a way to inflict my useless biomedical science knowledge on my audience somehow, and biosecurity was the perfect segue into doing so 😂😂😂
I hope your day is going gently, Anwen! Take care of yourself!

the fire shadow | main characters » ryuu hanaoka
name: ryuu hanaoka
age: 25
gender: male
ethnicity: japanese
born in: unknown, found at the doors of hanaoka orphanage in circle four
address: circle four, area three
occupation: mechanic at rakurai garage
status: alive“What can you do?” questioned the man, crouching to look at him in the face.
Ryuu shrugged, and then said, “Whatever you teach me to do”
“Do you like cars?”
“Is it that important?” When the man only raised his eyebrow at him, Ryuu added, “I will like them, if that means you will give me a job.”
From the next day onward, Ryuu had started learning the craft of instilling life into gigantic metal beasts. He learned that the man’s name, to whom he would always be grateful for convincing Boss Kawasaki to give him an opportunity, was Olufemi, and that he had also started working in the garage when he was a kid, after his family had decided to flee old Nigeria, which still hadn’t completely settled under the American occupation. Since he had been the one to propose his hiring to Boss Kawasaki, Olufemi has put in charge of Ryuu. Everything Ryuu knew, he had learnt from him.Now Ryuu, was a valued member of the Rakurai Garage’s team, and he and Olufemi liked to hold contests on who could fix the most cars in a set period of time.

Nahh don’t piss me off looool
1. Babatunde — — — — -Barry. This means the Jazz legend, Barry White, is actually Babatunde White.
2. Adebayo — — — — — Baylor. Come on, now. Is Bayo so difficult that we have to adopt “Baylor” as its abbreviation?
3. Chukwuemeka — — — — -Micky. Could you imagine, Lt. Col. Micky Odumegwu Ojukwu? Or Disney cartoon character called Chuwkuemeka Mouse?
4. Tamunoami — — — -Amy. Why abbrievate such a beautiful name?
5. Adenike — — — -Nikki.
6. Nwankwu — — — -Wanny. Could you imagine, the football commentator shouting at the top of his lungs, “O’ Wanny Kanu has just scored for Nigeria.” “Wanny who?”, fans would ask.
7. Kayode — — — -karl. So Karl Marx was actually Kayode Marx.
8. Taiwo — — — -Tyrone. God help us on this one.
9. Oladele — — — Dale. Oladele sounds sweeter, doesn’t it?
10. Oladapo — — -Daps. He must have gone off the deep end when he adopted this abbreviation. What happened to “Dapo”?
11. Tijani — — — -Tikki. Get used to Tikki Babangida of the Super Eagles.
12. Abdullahi — — — — Abby. Hmmmmmm.
13. Olusegun — — — -Lushia. President Lushia Matthew Aremu Obasanjo of Nigeria. Interesting.
14. Uchenna — — -Cheney. Vice President Dick Uchenna of the US. So a Nigerian is VP of the US. Very good.
15. Chinyere — — — -Chimerie. The owner of this abbreviated name was trying to make it sound like one of those African-American names. No wonder when I asked her what her name was, she said with a fake African-American accent, “Chimerie.” Her mother who apparently was unimpressed by this abbreviation told me her real name, “Chinyere.” Could you believe that? How about “Chichi?”
16. Seye — — — — — Shawn. It might as well be “Shenaynay”.
17. Adebanjo — — — -Baggy. What a laugh.
18. Garba — — — — — Gary. Why not just call it garri as in eba?
19. Haruna — — — Harry. This is not far-fetched, but isn’t Haruna a unique and sweet sounding name than Harry? There must be a 100 million Harrys in this world why add another?
20. Tamunokuru — — — — — Kerry. Now, this name means, “God’s power.” The abbrievation, “Kerry”, has done injustice to it.
21. Ipalibo — — — Libby. O sweet heavens, what is happening to Nigerians?
22. Tonye — — — Toni for female and Tony for male. Hmmmm, why not just leave it as it is?
23. Ikechukwu — — — -Ike as in “Ike Turner.”
24. Yetunde — — — Yetty. O’ Lord.
25. Omorodey — — — — — — — — — — — -Moe. What “Moe”?
26. Ajike — — — Jake. What then is the short version of Jacob? “Jike”?
27. Oluwole — — — — — — Wally. Whatever happened to Wole like in Wole Soyinka?
28. Ronke — — — — — — — Ronice. Is Ronke really difficult to pronounce? Even for Americans?
29. Olufemi — — — — — — — — — Lulu. Give me a break.
30. Osazee — — — — — — — — — — Zigi. I’m dying of laughter.
31. Olatunde — — — — — — — — -Larry. Am I hearing right? Larry for Olatunde?
32. Tohan — — — — — — — — — — — -Tobby. Wasn’t Tobby the name of our family dog back in the 80s?
33. Yinka — — — — — — — — — — — — Kiki. Please, let me hear something. What “kiki”?
34. Eberechi — — — — — — — — — — — — — Bebe. Don’t underestimate the creativity of Nigerians.
35. Ngozi — — — — — — — — — — — — -Goslet. I am shaking my head on this one. Mine! Mine!!.Mine!!
36. Uzomah — — — — -Zouk. Isn’t that a type music that originated in the Caribbean?
37. Kehinde — — — — — Kelly for women and Kenny for men. What then is the abbreviation for Kenneth?
38. Modupe — — — — — — — — — — — Molly. “Molly” as an abbreviation for this beautiful and sexy name? If you ask me I would its takes the appeal right out of it.
39. Tamunoboma — — — — — -Boomer. Why don’t we just call them “Boomerang”?
and last but not least,
40. Rotimi — — — -Tim. What an insult to such a fine and enchanting name
@nigeriancocomoo

90%...Oh, this would be excellent for your roadtrip triumvirate, please!
90% - Your character's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. What do they do?
Oh man you are so right
Nora starts trying to identify the problem and call any relevant people right away. She only really starts to panic if there’s no cell signal to allow that.
Olufemi is kind of panicked because they don’t know anything about cars. They’re coping by trying to remember that it’s all part of God’s plan and everything will be fine.
Mal either starts walking down the freeway to try and get people to pull over and help, or does something completely impractical like take her shirt off and climb on top of the car to sit on top of it and soak up some sun.

top 5 favorite passages/scenes/lines/whatever from the Ekundayo Fic!
sdfsd omg thank you, i really appreciate this :’)
in no particular order:
1. “Enitan kisses him and wipes his tears, just has he has wiped hers. She feels her own anger returning, burning her throat. She will not name her child after a plea. She will not beg to anyone to keep him. Not even an abiku. Not even the orishas.
Many days pass, and after he has breathed countless breaths, Enitan and Olufemi name their second son Ekundayo. Sorrow becomes joy.”
i love enitan and olufemi and this was the start of the fic and when i really started feeling like maybe my research was going somewhere. and this naming is really important for ekundayo and for the fic overall i think, and tbh, to black sail’s themes in general.
2. speaking of naming: so the “mr. scott” naming scene was difficult to nail down in terms of tone, like i wanted it to be so uncomfortable and unjust and dehumanizing, because it is, but i also wanted ekundayo to have some sort of say in his new naming? i’ve talk about it before but it took me a while to get the tone right. and i’m proud of this scene; no guthrie was going to call him “mr.” he’s going to make them.
3. “I’m not going anywhere.” Lydia’s voice is stone. “He said he’d come back.”
god. originally i was going to have lydia be a cantankerous old woman who runs away to freedom in the middle of the night and ekundayo barely knows her and the smiths sell him because they’re broke as fuck. thank god i didn’t go that route and the real lydia showed up. i started thinking about how old lady lydia is too repetitive and has a similar arc to other characters, so i started thinking about making her only a little older than enkundayo, and then: “what if she didn’t leave? what if she chose to stay?” and lydia arrived, finally. she’s complicated and fragile and fiercely loving and grieving and kind of an asshole and i love her. this line gets me every time.
4. “The girl grins at him, gap-toothed and delighted. It’s like glimpsing moonlight through the thick, rumbling, wild layers of cloud in the rainy season.”
ekundayo hasn’t had a real friend in 2 years and he finally meets nneka and it’s like!!! i didn’t even realize how much of a relief it was to write their introduction scene until i was writing it. i could take a breath. she’s the bravest person in boston and her and ekundayo are going to do great things together.
5. i’ve talked about sifiso a lot so here’s lelise:
“Lelise’s slight smirk is back in place, and she strides out of the room with her head held high, her gait impertinent and regal, snotty and majestic. It’s like she owns the whole house. It’s like she goes by a different name.”
she was just gonna be an antagonistic foil to nneka and then her backstory hit me like a ton of bricks and whoops, i love this asshole who is traumatized and angry and so hungry for the power and validation she once had. lelise and flint have a weird amount of things in common and lelise is going to grow and change and i love her. and i’m proud of this passage. it conveys more of who she once was, and why she is the way she is now.
