Finished this in the last few days before our big move back to the midwest. I started this painting like 3 years ago. It was based on a much smaller marker sketch. I would leave it for 8 months sometimes and come back to it. Its concept and the intention behind the piece have changed/evolved over the years. I’ll just leave you with this. QOTD: Do you like gouache? So I bought some new Holbein and Winsor and Newton gouache and this was the result because sometimes I get bored and draw Valan in fun outfits. I can’t wait to start another actual detailed gouache painting because this was a fun warm up and I’m feeling rather inspired. I like gouache, it’s fun to layer, I just wish I used it more. ➡️#timelapse #speedpaint ➡️ Aight lemme tell you something guys. . Avatar the Last Airbender was one show I always tried to catch when I was younger. There was always something I could relate to between the Gaang on screen and one of the characters I was invested in was Katara. Seeing her grow and evolve was always a joy to watch (y'all remember the fight between her and Paaku at the northern pole). I even did my hair like her one day for school haha . I look back at it now and I realise that Katara is a character that is kind, strong, complex, and that also looked like me. While not explicitly black, dark-skinned characters on screen in a cartoon at the time was rare. (There are other examples of course! ;) ) Now I watched German TV and German TV is a tad delayed in regards to non-german content. It needs to be licensed, translated and localised, dubbed, and then be put on air and that process alone can take years. . If you do not understand why representation and diversity in the media is important, I invite you to look at Hong Kong kungfu movies (Bruce Lee) and its relationship with the African American and the Asian-American community especially in its historical contexts in America. . I also invite you to look at what you consume, the kinds of people that you see in it and how writers/showrunners treat them. Ask yourself, "Why do I enjoy this character? What is their role in the narrative? What do they struggle with? How do they grow?" While a show can just be a show, small things like seeing yourself on screen means a lot. . Netflix right now has AtlA and I highly recommend watching it. Hi everyone! Here's another piece for the Art Redraw Challenge. The original was an attempt to replicate Takehito Harada's lovely style used primarily for the Disgaea series of games. For the redraw I went in a different direction and went for a looser, sketchy look using pencils for the lineart, and a gentler approach to layering on colors for the rendering. It's a lot easier on the eyes, but I should probably re-attempt Takehito's style sometime.
