The "Cry" a man in torment
"The Cry" is an oil painting made in 2015, done by Charis Psachos a greek artist into conceptual abstract art. The art displays emotions and expressions when it comes to that of agony. It is being portrayed as a man crying out of either physical or mental pain. The art style is abstract.
The first thing that is noticed is the wide open mouth and that it takes up practically the whole canvas. It seems like it should be the primary focus, the artist seems to want the viewer to notice it first. The width of the mouth, because of the largeness, represents how much despair the person feels.
The color used for the interior of the mouth is black, considering that the art is named "The Cry", the color within is the reason behind it. There is darkness within the character. Also as you can see, the primary color used in this piece is red and when thinking about what the significance of the color is, it says a lot about the work like that the emotions are fiery, passionate and very strong. I also see red as a representation of blood, which, as I talked about in the introduction, could also mean physical agony. We have all heard that mental pain can feel just the same as physical pain.
This is a complete assumption, but maybe the red could also be a reference of blood relations meaning family. It could mean that the artist could have problems with family, that the family is the cause of their agony or that a person they held dear passed, but there is no way for me to confirm this. Another thing you can see is that there are splashes of red and black in absolute disarray. These splashes are a show of distress and disorientation, and the texture of the painting is very bumpy from the splashes, which further reinforces my analysis.
After analyzing, I was shocked to see that there is far more relevant detail with this piece than I officially thought. I realized how much thought the artist put within their work. To be honest, I only chose this art piece initially for just completing the assignment, but now, I was overcome with awe about how meaningful it was, and I really regret nothing. I got the idea from seeing a YouTube content creator do an analysis of another abstract art, and I was so intrigued after her analysis that I wanted to do one myself. I believed that doing an analysis of abstract expressionism art would allow me to elaborate and have more to say, but now I feel some connection to this piece because I can relate, and I never felt like anything has portrayed an emotion so well. As for the artist, there is no information on their personal life , but I believe they were trying to communicate those negative emotions of despair, hopelessness, sadness, and pain within this piece. They portrayed the feelings that were better illustrated than communicated verbally.
