 THE YEAR IN REVIEW:

     If anyone had told me that 2023 would see new releases from both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, I’d have suggested a sanity check. But a live archive release from The Stones early in the year was followed by the all-new Hackney Diamonds in October, while The Beatles released one more song, Now and Then, to cap their career once and for all. Of course, both were bittersweet. Hackney Diamonds was the first Stones release of new material following the death of original drummer Charlie Watts in August 2021. And though Watts appeared on two tracks finished in 2019, Steve Jordan took over the drum chair for the band with mixed results. The Beatles resurrected yet another John Lennon demo first attempted for their Anthology project in 1995, but left unfinished then because of technical issues. New technology allowed them to finally finish the track in 2023, but guitarist George Harrison had passed in 2001. That left Paul and Ringo along with late producer George Martin’s son Giles to complete the recording. So, these releases are really in name only because both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones we all came to know and love had already left the building. Still, both projects were successful, and well-received, and while The Beatles claim their record is indeed the end, The Rolling Stones are already back on the road, and promising another album of new material (and one last Watts recording) as early as next year. (I wouldn’t put any money on that, however, unless you can afford to lose it.)

     For those of us who took Charlie Watts’ passing to heart, there was some comfort in the release of the Charlie Watts Anthology this year that collected some of the drummer’s best Jazz recordings. And once again, some master sleuth managed to unearth a previously unheard, and unreleased recording by the late John Coltrane. Evenings At The Village Gate with Eric Dolphy, a rehearsal for a 1961 date at the Village Gate transcends less than perfect sound to remind everyone that 1961 was John Coltrane’s year, and that everything he touched that year turned to gold.

     The musical event of 2023, as far as I’m concerned was Yuja Wang’s marathon performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic of all four Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos in one go in February, released a few months later. The genius pianist also released The American Project, a new work by composer Teddy Abrams with the Louisville Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. She toured sold out venues all around the world, and continues to push the envelope by making innovative, and fresh choices in her repertoire to draw more attention to the Classical music genre in the 21st century. As Classical musicians go, Yuja Wang is a Rock star.

     One of the year’s best surprises was the return of Clash bassist Paul Simonon as part of a duo working under the name Galen & Paul. Galen is Galen Ayers, daughter of the late British singer-songwriter Kevin Ayers. Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day recalls the music Serge Gainsbourg made with Jane Birkin in the late 1960s. Sophisticated, smart, charming, and funny, and the last thing I’d have expected, but it works, and was one of my favorite records of the year. The new Pretenders album, Relentless, was another welcome addition to their catalog, and my collection. And PJ Harvey’s latest, I Inside The Old Year Dying, her first new album in seven years, re-establishes her as an artist who continues to move forward, and challenge listeners by constantly reinventing herself.

     Finally, a great new live album from Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, prepared for release by Chick before he passed in 2021 paved the way for the reissue of the band's five studio albums for GRP in new digipak editions with excellent sound. Candid did the honors.

     Closer to home, vinyl and cassette prices continue to rise while the availability of CDs continues to make buying a physical copy of almost anything a genuine headache. I waited three months for an online seller to supply me with Yuja Wang’s Rachmaninoff Concertos CD, and on the day of release, I visited eight retailers online or in store before I could find a copy of the new Rolling Stones album on CD. The store was 40 minutes from my house, and it dampened the excitement of getting the band’s first album of new material in eighteen years. I guess the record industry doesn’t need long time collectors any longer now that vinyl and cassettes are a hit with twenty-somethings with deep pockets. If CDs disappear completely, I’m finished buying music because I refuse to rent it.

     I did, however, manage to find one vinyl record I wanted this year that was actually reasonably priced and available from a reliable online seller. Chuck Berry’s Concerto In B. Goode is kind of a “wild card” in the Berry catalog. His last release for Mercury in 1969 before he returned to Chess, the album has four new originals on side one, but side two features the title track only – eighteen minutes of Berry’s trademark licks and lines. There’s nothing else like it in Chuck’s catalog, and for that reason alone, it was worth getting. It’s hardly a masterpiece, but it is a great listen, and the pressing on Elemental is pristine.

     Another great find this year was Willie Nelson’s 1971 album Yesterday’s Wine. I’d never heard it. I only knew it by reputation. But it was even better than I’d heard – easily as good as Shotgun Willie, Phases and Stages, and even Red Headed Stranger.

     I’ve always (until this year) been behind on PJ Harvey releases, but this year I caught up with Let England Shake, released in 2011. It’s the best album in what has become one of the most impressive catalogs of any contemporary Rock artist.

     Gary Bartz’s Live In Bremen 1975 with the NTU Troop was issued in 2021. I was looking for something interesting from that period, and stumbled on this one. Five years removed from his time with Miles Davis’s electric band, this lands between stints with Kenny Burrell, and Donald Byrd. Free Jazz with a Funk and Soul influence, and the politics of the day are what Bartz’s band was all about, and they are in fine form here. The music just washes over you like a soul cleansing shower.

     All in all, not a bad year for good music – if you could find it, and if you could afford it. The future doesn’t look too bright for collectors like me, but I’m not ready to hang it up just yet – no matter how bumpy the road gets.

     In closing, I’ll mention briefly that I read 40 books this past year, and several were among the worst I’ve ever read. I won’t waste your time discussing those. Instead, I’ll recommend the last one I read which happens to be a music memoir. Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl by Sleater-Kinney guitarist, songwriter, and co-founder Carrie Brownstein is one of the most engaging books I’ve ever read by a musician. Her honesty and candor are disarming, and while most memoirs are not usually what you would call “page turners,” this one certainly is. I read it in just two days, and I expect to read it again one day. Very highly recommended, and you don’t even need to be a fan of the band (though you might become one by the time you finish).

     Most of the best books I read in 2023 were the crime novels of Ross McDonald featuring his sleuth Lew Archer, and Ian Fleming’s James Bond books. I also read a couple of books by Rock writer Gene Sculatti. For The Records and Tryin’ To Tell A Stranger ‘Bout Rock and Roll were great fun to read, and after the garbage I encountered through most of the year, welcome relief.

Stars paid tribute to Motorhead frontman Lemmy at his funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Slash from Guns N' Roses, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich from Metallica, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford and Anthrax frontman Scott Ian. all spoke at the service. Lemmy's bass guitar was plugged in to a stack of amplifiers and the volume turned up, with the congregation applauding as feedback from the speakers filled the chapel.

2005 - Elvis Presley

The single was released to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his birth, a previous Elvis chart topper was re-released each week.

2003 - Elvis Presley

A grand piano once owned by Elvis Presley was sold for $685,000 (£425,711). Music producer Robert Johnson and partner Larry Moss sold the piano to the chairman of the Blue Moon Group, Michael Muzio who was planning to take the piano on a casino-sponsored promotional tour. He was then planning for the piano to be shown at the proposed rock museum at Walt Disney World.

2002 - David McWilliams

Irish singer, songwriter David McWilliams died of a heart attack at his home in Ballycastle, County Antrim aged of 56. Released over 10 solo albums and wrote 'The Days Of Pearly Spencer,' 1992 UK No.4 for Marc Almond.

1997 - David Bowie

David Bowie performed his 50th Birthday Bash concert (the day after his birthday) at Madison Square Garden, New York with guests Frank Black, Sonic Youth, Robert Smith of The Cure, Dave Grohl, Lou Reed, Billy Corgan and Placebo. Proceeds from the concert went to the Save The Children fund.

1981 - Terry Hall

Terry Hall and Jerry Dammers from The Specials were both fined £400 ($680) after being found guilty of using threatening words during a gig in Cambridge, England.

1976 - Queen

Queen were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The single enjoyed a nine week run on the chart selling more than a million copies by the end of the month. It reached No.1 again in 1991 for five weeks following Mercury's death, eventually becoming the UK's third best selling single of all time.

1970 - Led Zeppelin

During a UK tour Led Zeppelin appeared at The Royal Albert Hall, London, the night of Jimmy Page's 26th birthday. (John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck were all in the audience). The two and a quarter hour set was recorded and filmed but shelved for several decades, eventually seeing a release on a 2003 official DVD.

1965 - The Beatles

Every Day Is A Good Day?

These words were the motto of a friend/mentor in my professional world. He had gone through a serious health spell, and was left to rot in the hospital. When he rebounded and got better, his feet and toes essentially had to be broken and pinned to straighten, allowing him to walk.

For years, I carried that motto. Then came the stroke. These days, it is a much more difficult task to find a day that I can feel like that motto is more than just words.

As an Atheist, my views on life & death are pretty straightforward. I have no belief on the question of where my "soul" will come to reside based on who or what I may have pledged my allegiance to. I've always believed in karma, that you get what you give.

We've all gotten a kick out of Little Nicky when Hitler is in hell and he gets a pineapple shoved up his ass as a punishment for possibly being the worst human ever on this planet. We've all talked about people who will have "A special place in hell" reserved for them.

I had a friend pass away recently, and his brother went about 9 years before, so the prevailing sentiment is "Be sure to say hello to your brother for me" or something like that. Rock N' Roll fans think of a supergroup with people like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, John Entwistle, and Charlie Watts playing in it.

Then there's the reincarnation theory. If you lived a good life, you come back as a puppy or something deemed to have a blessed existence, where if you were an asshole, you come back as a DMV clerk or an IRS accountant.

Those theories give us the sense that this is just phase one of a larger existence and that what we do here punches our ticket for the next chapter. As I have believed for some time, it is like mourning. We don't really mourn the dead, but rather the fact that the living can no longer have them in our lives.

I have chosen to believe that we are simply a different form of animal and therefore our lives and deaths are similar. When our heart stops and the body can no longer support life, it is the end. Not a pathway leading somewhere, but that's it, no more, game over.

I may be entirely wrong, but I have nobody that left us, arrived at this afterlife destination, then came back. So, as an Atheist, I go with the simplest theory is most likely the truth.

After a 30+ year career in healthcare, nearly 20 with the same company, that company is now closing the doors and going out of business. This is the company that kept me on the payroll when I was hit with the stroke, and allowed me to return to work on a limited schedule when I returned, among countless other things.

Not surprisingly, I don't find myself independently wealthy after that time in healthcare. I've had a good income and good life, but I'm afraid not working is not an option going forward. But, I'm not able to drive, have limited movement on my right side and sound like I've been in the dentist's chair all day. Narrow's the opportunity window, right?

In August I filed for disability, thinking I would get ahead of the game. HAHAHAHA. No such luck. They tell you it could be between 5 - 8 months before they will determine if you should be approved. 3 months in they are still hovering at the beginning of the medical review.

It's a shame they have had to make the system so difficult because so much fraud has tainted them, but they should be able to look quickly at my record and see that I applied for unemployment once, and got 1 check before I was back at work. I have worked since I was 16 and my working karma should earn me this when it is needed.

So, I'll just apply for work from home. After all, one of the things we learned during the pandemic (aside from how wonderful it was on the roads) was that most of us can do our work from home. But here again, most companies want you to be able to field calls, handle the finances, balance their budgets and manage their staff with no time off. Or it's a "hybrid remote" position, meaning at least once a week you need to come to an office and speak with people who can't email or chat online.

And for the jobs that don't require all of that, there's 27,000 applicants. "We'll get back with you soon."

This is the exact reason why a life used to be considered over once you have raised and taught your children to produce and be independent, and concluded your career. Otherwise, you get to spend who knows how long being a burden to those you raised to be independent.

Having spent that 30+ years working in senior healthcare, I have watched countless lives that were dragged on way past the point of logic, partially because we don't embrace the idea that over is over and while we have no problem putting down a 9 year old dog, we can't let a human say it's their time to be done.

Now please don't think I'm seeking an injection to be done. I would never do that unless I were deemed to be beyond help. But if I went to bed tonight and never woke again, I wouldn't feel that I was robbed of a single moment. Before you read this and think this screams depression, understand the difference between looking for a rope and being comfortable with mortality. In many cases, depression means "take 2 of these and call me next week". (unless you've ever been told you could possibly be allergic to the 12 ingredients you can't pronounce without a PHD) I've contributed plenty to the medical machine already. You're welcome pharma!

I guess for me now it's every day is another day. SSDD, now there's a motto!

R.I.P. Jet Black (Stranglers)

Gutted. He was a good age, but still gutted.

Like Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, he was a jazz-influenced drummer and much the better for it.

Most people outside of the UK and France would look at you blankly if you mention the Stranglers today, but they were by far the biggest selling of all the bands during the punk era by several furlongs - and arguably no other band had quite that sense of menace and foreboding as they did, writing about racism, child molesters, mad old minor aristocrats fixated on long past glory days, gutter journalists, gangster politicians, and a whole lot of other disturbed and disturbing individuals they encountered.

But as much as the darker side of life, they also wrote of the deeper. Of UFOs, renewable energy, midnight conversations with people who turned out to be ghosts (from which came their only Number One - ‘A Midnight Summer Dream’ in Poland of all places (Communist Poland’s love affair with the Stranglers was a mystery that was never quite explained ...), and of course rats, ravens and much else of what society rejected as ‘evil’.

They were a band that made you think as much as they made you want to dive behind the sofa - one that would write a song on the evils of drugs one moment (’Don’t Bring Harry’), acknowledging what made people want to take them the next (’Golden Brown’ - although as has been pointed out, it may equally have been a nod to the Karma Sutra and similar Asian texts on sensual pleasures).

In some ways it complimented this most contrary of bands, where highly successful businessman Brian Duffy (amongst his claims to fame is the invention of the ‘home brew kit’ familiar to many crafters today) threw it all in because he was bored and wanted to play the drums again - the rest was literally history. One scientist, one university lecturer and one medieval battle reenactor later, he’d formed one of the all time greatest bands.

He may have long retired from The Stranglers - and in all honesty the band ought to have packed it in long before keyboardist Dave Greenfield’s tragic death from Covid 19 last year - but it still feels like the end of an era to see his passing, one whose crippling childhood asthma never held him back from doing what he wanted to do from sheer bloody mindedness that no one and nothing was ever going to dare to stop him.

Seeing stuff about the new album makes my stomach flutter in a bad way. I don't really know why. It could be that I don't want them to have a new album without Charlie or without Charlie on all the tracks. I thought that list that said (with Watt) were the tracks that Charlie played on and they just forgot the s on his name and I was like 'that's it?'. And then I'm afraid some of the songs are going to be about Charlie and it'll be really sad. Or maybe its just the idea that they will be promoting a new album without Charlie there to stand silently in the background. Its almost like I want to avoid any news about it because it makes me sad rather than happy to hear Charlie on new songs.

Then you post that Mick clip and that is the closest I've heard Mick get to losing it (with the exception of maybe the St. Louis show) and now I'm all bummed. And I keep telling myself its ridiculous. One, I don't even know Charlie and two, he was 80! He had a good life, a happy life and if he was still with us the loss of Shirley would have devastated him (as I'm sure his passing did not help with her health at all). I don't know. Maybe I'm just PMS-ing. lol Maybe I just need to go look at my favorite Charlie pics again.

To be honest, I’ve felt the same way through most of this. I think a lot about how many years Keith spent insisting that Charlie was the Stones and that they could never go on without him, and, while I fully understand why they’ve ended up making the choices they have (evidently with Charlie’s blessing) it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Especially when it provokes all the commentary (which I stand by calling musically ignorant) about how Charlie was old and tired and broken down and they sound so much better and more energetic with Steve. (I’ll refrain from going chapter and verse again about fundamental differences between styles of drumming and why his cymbal work and his chemistry with Mick in particular doesn’t even touch Charlie’s). Keith sort of unintentionally predicted the future in 2013:

As far as the new album, yeah. I don’t really feel I’m looking forward to it so much as holding my breath in anticipation and anxiety to see how much Charlie will be on it and how much will be about him. It’s hard to accept that this is the last we’ll ever hear of him, at least until they sell their catalogue/someone decides it’s time to start putting out collections of unreleased songs and first attempts. It’s also kind of disappointing that they’ve been working on this album since 2012/3, but, because of various issues, including personal ones, it wasn’t until Charlie died that they found the urgency to finish it. And because of that he’s missing from half, or possibly more. At the end of the day that’s not really anyone’s fault, just a sad fact of being human and flawed with limited time.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being sad, either. 80 is a very good number, and Charlie lived a wonderful, fulfilling life full of love and kindness, but he also had something left to give and his death cut that short. But, although I suspect Shirley’s passing had a lot to do with losing him, by the same token I doubt he would have survived more than a handful of months if she had gone first. He just wasn’t made to live without her. So maybe that was for the best, at least for him?

Either way, happy Charlie pictures are always good therapy.

Rolling Stone Charlie Watts Dead at 80

Charlie Watts is dead.

The 80-year-old Rolling Stones drummer “passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier (Aug. 24) surrounded by his family,” said a statement on social media.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. … Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”

No cause was given. But Watts had recently been deemed “unlikely” for the Stones’ forthcoming U.S. tour after undergoing an unspecified medical procedure.

“Herein lies the band’s secret; there is no greatness without a great drummer,” Perry Farrell tweeted. “RIP Charlie Watts.”

Dave Davies called the news “a total shock,” while Sheryl Crow said Watts’ death leaves “a huge, gaping hole in the universe.”

“God bless Charlie Watts,” Ringo Starr tweeted. “We’re going to miss you, man. Peace and love to the family.”

An unshaven, bedraggled-looking Paul McCartney called Watts’ death “a huge blow” to the Stones in video tribute.

“Charlie was a rock,” he said. “A fantastic drummer.”

Former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor is not very active on social media. But it’s telling that his most-recent post is from June 2, wishing Watts a happy 80th birthday.

“A very sad day,” Elton John tweeted.

“Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men, and such brilliant company. My deepest condolences to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte. And of course, the Rolling Stones.”

Writing on Twitter, Stephen Stills said, simply: “Rest in peace, Charlie.”

Watts had been with the band since 1963 and is one of only three Stones - Mick Jagger and Keith Richards being the others - to appear on every Rolling Stones record.

“I’m just shocked to hear about Charlie Watts,” Brian Wilson wrote on Twitter. “I don’t know what to say, I feel terrible for Charlie’s family. Charlie was a great drummer and I loved the Stones’ music, they made great records. Love and mercy.”

“Rock ‘n’ roll would not be rock ‘n’ roll without the rhythm, the style, the vibe of this incredible musician,” Tom Morello wrote on Facebook. “Rest in peace, Charlie Watts, one of the greatest and most important architects of the music we love.”

Like Watts’ drumming, many of the online tributes to him were simple and to the point.

“Incredible and irreplaceable” (Ron Sexsmith). “Master of elegant simplicity” (Liz Phair). “A smooth brother” (Nile Rodgers). “What a legend” (Garbage). “A beautiful soul” (David Coverdale). “One of the true timeless icons.” (Paul Stanley).

Outside of the Stones, Watts led an eponymous big-band jazz group. But he was otherwise the quiet Stone, steadily keeping the engine purring even as the rest of the band were showy and shambolic.

“Charlie’s drumming is powerful and unique,” Robbie Robertson tweeted. “His approach is entirely his own and helped shape the sound of rock and roll.”

Former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann recalled seeing the Stones play “Little Red Rooster” in Oakland - in the same room where the Dead had played that very song.

“Charlie had his own feel for it and I loved it,” Kreutzmann said. “I always admired his steadfast approach, ability and style. Rest in peace, brother.”

A year ago, the guitar was in dire straits. With songs like Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings,” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” and Panic! At the Disco’s “High Hopes” among the most consumed of 2019, programmed beats and horns were the sonic flavors of popular music. Sure, there were outliers — the Jonas Brothers’ “Sucker,” Maroon 5’s “Memories” and Post Malone’s “Circles” among them — but as the rock and alternative genres embraced artists like Billie Eilish, whose innovative music made the traditional band approach feel outdated, the days of chords and solos seemed numbered if not headed towards irrelevance.

Then came the coronavirus pandemic and things changed. Forced to perform from home or in rooms not intended for live music during lockdown, many artists went back to basics and out came the trusty six-string. For iHeartRadio’s “Living Room Concert for America” in March, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl played an acoustic Guild on “My Hero”; Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day strummed to his band’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”; and even Eilish, with her collaborator brother Finneas, sang her hit “Bad Guy” accompanied by only a Fender acoustic. Other benefit livestreams like Global Citizen’s “One World Together At Home” event saw the Rolling Stones, Keith Urban and Shawn Mendes strip down their hit songs for unplugged versions. And in April, Miley Cyrus delivered an emotional cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” on “Saturday Night Live” with Andrew Watt, himself a COVID survivor, on guitar.

At the same time, there was an electric guitar solo being heard on one of the most-played songs in the United States. Harry Styles’ “Adore You,” which has logged 1.1 million radio spins in 2020, according to Mediabase, and has been streamed more than 400 million times, per Alpha Data, features the playing of Kid Harpoon (real name: Tom Hull), Styles’ friend and producer, who handled the guitar parts for much of the Brit’s excellent “Fine Line” album, released in Dec. 2019. As it turns out, the melody of the solo, which also serves as the bridge to “Adore You,” was first hummed by Styles for Hull to emulate. “I did it with my mouth into a microphone,” Styles told Variety in October. “And then Tom sent me this video trying to get it to sound the same. He spent a couple of hours getting it.”

Why include a guitar solo when most pop songs would never dare? “I feel it’s kind of like ‘La La Land’ saving jazz  — only for rock ‘n’ roll,” Styles cracked when posed with the question. But more seriously speaking, Variety‘s Hitmaker of the Year added: “I’m not a spearheader of the movement, like, ‘Let’s bring back guitars.’ There’s plenty of times when [a song] doesn’t sound better with a guitar, and you don’t use it. But a lot of the references I grew up with have guitars; and it’s the first instrument I played, so it makes sense that I would like the sound of them more. I don’t think the guitar is dying. Guitars are great and always have been.”

In fact, guitar sales in 2020 have been robust. Music retailer Sweetwater reports more than 50% year-over-year growth in guitar purchases, with even larger increases during the peak COVID months of April, May and June “when customers most likely hunkered down to practice and create music after watching all of the streaming video they could handle,” according to a rep for the Indiana-based company.

The spike extended to other string instruments as well, which saw growth of more than 70% year-over-year in the price range of $299 or lower. The metric indicates that “new players are joining the fold,” says Sweetwater, which has been in business for over four decades and operates online. (Competitor Guitar Center, with more than 250 physical locations in the U.S., did not fare as well, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month.)

Even in the virtual world, learning to play an instrument has taken off during lockdown. The platform Yousician, which provides interactive learning for guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and voice, currently reigns as the No. 1 app for music instruction while its sister product, GuitarTuna, is tops for guitar tuning.

Ask current writers and producers working in pop and hip-hop about their process and you soon learn that an acoustic guitar is often the beginning or the essence of a hit song. Among Variety‘s 2020 Hitmakers, the trio of Taz Taylor, Charlie Handsome and KC Supreme credited a guitar loop as the foundation for Trevor Daniel’s “Falling.” For Maren Morris’ “The Bones,” producer Greg Kurstin noted: “The first thing I noticed was Jimmy Robbins’ guitar hook; I wanted to keep the song rooted in that.”

“So many hit songs from 2020 started with a acoustic or electric guitar, whether it be a melody line or simple progression,” says songwriter and producer Jenna Andrews, whose recent credits include BTS’ “Dynamite” and Benee’s “Supalonely.”

And often, those guitar-based foundations remained through the finished product — for instance, 24KGoldn’s “Mood,” with its impossibly catchy sun-kissed guitar riff, and Powfu’s “death bed (coffee for your head).”

“I know it sounds kinda old school, but I love it when a well-recorded acoustic pops off on the radio,” says Sam Hollander, whose hits include the aforementioned “High Hopes” and Fitz and the Tantrums’ “HandClap.” “The bulk of my songs tend to be born on guitar. Without that foundation, the lyrics and melodies never really emote the heartbeat and emotion that I’m trying to dial in. There’s just a general warmth to it that’s hard to replicate. It’s like the warmest chocolate chip cookie.”

“I think the prevalence of guitar in 2020 has a lot to do with hip-hop producers using more emo and punk-rock influences,” offers Angie Pagano, whose AMP management company represents Tommy Brown (Ariana Grande, Blackpink) and Mr. Franks, among others. “Juice Wrld really helped bring this into the mainstream over the last few years. We’re seeing a great blend of emo and trap these days.”

Indeed, the year’s most-consumed hits leaned hip-hop — Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” landed at No. 1 on the Hitmakers list with Future and Drake, Jack Harlow and Megan Thee Stallion in the Top 10 — but even DaBaby’s “Rockstar,” the No. 3 song of the year, referenced a guitar in its chorus, albeit alongside mention of a Glock pistol. That visual may go against what Hollander calls “the Kumbaya vibe of the guitar,” but the song still features an acoustic strum at its core.

In the case of Styles’ 2020 successes, which also include the ubiquitous “Watermelon Sugar,” his producer further explained that, while aware of what was reacting on the charts at the time they were recording, Styles wasn’t about to chase the trends. Said Tom Hull: “We [thought], we can’t play the commercial game in terms of what’s happening right now. What we can do is make music that really resonates with us. There’s no blueprint. You just have faith. We love records from the ’70s and ’80s; weird prog rock music that might be a seven-minute instrumental; then you’re listening to Shania Twain, like, ‘This is awesome, too.’ The goal was to make something we will always love, and if it completely flops commercially, at least we know we love it. We have that.”

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts dies aged 80

Musician’s publicist says he died peacefully in a London hospital surrounded by his family

Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer who propelled the band’s sound for nearly 60 years, has died aged 80.

A statement from his London publicist, Bernard Doherty, to the PA news agency said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.

“He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”

Earlier this month, it was announced that Watts was to miss the band’s forthcoming US tour as he recovered from an unspecified medical procedure.

With his limber stance, keen knowledge of jazz, and unruffled ability to make songs swing even when keeping the strictest time, Watts is regarded as one of the greatest – and most stylish – rock drummers of all time.

Among those paying tribute was Ringo Starr, drummer with friendly rivals the Beatles, who wrote: “God bless Charlie Watts we’re going to miss you man peace and love to the family”.

Born in 1941, Watts was raised in Wembley, north-west London, and later the suburb of Kingsbury. His first musical love was US jazz from the swing and bebop eras, drumming along with jazz records after getting his first kit in his mid-teens. He later attended art school and became a graphic designer after graduation, playing in local bands on the side.

In 1962 he joined Blues Incorporated, a linchpin band in the British rhythm and blues scene led by Alexis Korner, playing alongside Cream bassist Jack Bruce and more in a fluid lineup. Through Korner he met Brian Jones, who would play at Blues Incorporated gigs, and they found regular fans in Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who also ended up playing with the group. Jagger and Richards soon formed their own group, the Rolling Stones, with Watts joining in 1963.

“ It was another band to join, I was in about three of them,” Watts later said; he began living informally with the group. “We’d rehearse a lot. They – Brian and Keith – never went to work, so we played records all day, in that rather bohemian life. Mick was at university. But he paid the rent.”

Always using a straightforward four-drum setup – positively minimalist compared with the multi-instrument setups favoured by many rock groups – he gave the Rolling Stones propulsive, unfussy backbeats on every one of their studio albums, beginning with their self-titled 1964 debut. “I don’t like drum solos,” he once said. “I admire some people that do them, but generally I prefer drummers playing with the band. The challenge with rock’n’roll is the regularity of it. My thing is to make it a dance sound – it should swing and bounce.”

Weathering the death of Jones in 1969, the band went on to epitomise stadium rock’n’roll – though Watts regarded them as a “blues band” – scoring 13 UK No 1 albums including the critically adored likes of Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Watts helped to power their high-energy world tours, playing with the group well into his mid-70s – his final tour was the two-year No Filter tour, beginning in 2017.

Alongside the Rolling Stones, Watts also played jazz in a series of groups over the years, including his own quintet and tentet, and Rocket 88, reuniting with Korner and Bruce in the late 1970s to play boogie-woogie.

In the mid-1980s, he was bandleader in the Charlie Watts Orchestra, a gargantuan unit playing big band jazz that toured the world, and released a live album, The Charlie Watts Orchestra Live at Fulham Town Hall. “Mick really likes it,” he said of his Rolling Stones bandmates in 1987. “Keith’s very annoyed, though, that we don’t have a guitar player. He thinks it’s a sacrilege. But I just told him that with 33 guys, it’s hard enough to fit everyone’s solos in as it is.”

Unlike the colourful romantic histories of his Rolling Stones bandmates, Watts was stable in his personal life: he married his wife Shirley Ann Shepherd in 1964, and they remained together until his death. He is also survived by their daughter, Seraphina. Although known as a more temperate rock star compared with the rest of the Stones, Watts struggled with alcohol, amphetamines and heroin use for a period in the 1980s. “I think it was a midlife crisis,” he told the Observer in 2000. “All I know is that I became totally another person around 1983 and came out of it about 1986. I nearly lost my wife and everything over my behaviour … I wasn’t that badly affected, I wasn’t a junkie, but giving up [drugs] was very, very hard.” He said that falling down the steps of his cellar drunk while fetching another bottle of wine “really brought it home to me how far down I’d gone. I just stopped everything – drinking, smoking, taking drugs, everything, all at once.”

In 2004, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, but recovered after a course of radiotherapy.

After undergoing emergency surgery last month and announcing he would not appear on tour – he was to be replaced by Steve Jordan – he commented in a typically droll manner: “For once my timing has been a little off”. The procedure had been announced as “completely successful” with Watts needing “proper rest and recuperation”.

Watts’ final release with the band was Living in a Ghost Town, a 2020 single taken from a studio album they had been planning.
