1. Sloan Lake

Sloan's Lake is a body of water, park, and neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. It is sometimes referred to as Sloan Lake and Sloan's Lake. On Denver's northwest side is where the neighborhood is situated.

2. Denver Firefighters Museum

A museum called the Denver Firefighters Museum is located in the Centre of Denver, Colorado. It is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that comprises of an 11,000 square foot building with four galleries that examine Denver's history of firefighting.

3. The Hudson Gardens & Event Center

In Littleton, Colorado, 12 miles southwest of Denver, there is a botanical garden and event space called the Hudson Gardens & Event Center. Thirty acres of gardens, pathways, open space, and event sites make up the property. In June 1996, the gardens were publicly accessible.

4. Denver Botanic gardens Chatfield Farms

One of the top five botanical gardens in the United States, Denver Botanic Gardens has more than 15,000 taxa from exotic locations like Morocco, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and the Himalayas.

5. Chatfield Reservoir

A dam and man-made lake called Chatfield Dam and Reservoir are situated on the South Platte River, south of Littleton, Colorado. The United States Army Corps of Engineers constructed the dam and reservoir in response to the catastrophic flood of 1965.

     “This seems like an extraordinary amount of water we are taking on.” These were the words that filled my head as the waves came crashing upon our boat. As we glided upon Chatfield Reservoir last weekend, the wakes got a little rough, and before we could get the boat under control, water started to fill our vessel. I will admit I got a little spooked, but I prayed and asked God to carry us to safer ground.

      As the engine shut down and the boat struggled, we knew we had taken on too much water. So, we ventured across the lake at 5mph, with the engine trouble indicator flashing, until we finally hit the docks and could pull the boat out of the water. I was worried about the damage the boat may have incurred, and as I watched the water pour out, gallon after gallon, I did not get a fuzzy feeling about the entire situation.

      I prayed and prayed that the damage was minimal all week. But, after the owner took the boat out again to see if it was back to normal, it died, and he was stranded. The vessel had to be towed back to the docks, loaded up on the trailer, and sent to the garage for some diagnostic testing. Luckily, all it needed was a new sensor that most likely had fried from taking on too much water.

      Sometimes, our lives can be overcome with the crashing waves. We feel like we are sinking, and if we don’t do something to right the ship, we may find ourselves at the bottom of the lake. Without the constant reading of our bibles, without the support of our communities, and without the practice of prayer, our parts wear out and are lives feel “fried” as we try to skim across the waters of life.

      But there is good news! We have a God that can repair the damage this world inflicts upon us. He can take our parts, refurbish them when they wear out, and make our lives anew. And He has all the buckets we need to empty out our vessels when we take on more than we can handle. So, do not fret and do not worry. Face the storms and battle each crashing wave. With God by your side, he will empty your vessel of everything that threatens to make you sink, and before you know it, you are back to shore and safe in His everlasting arms!

Fun With Terry & Judith - Conifer, CO

After an uneventful drive from Gunnison to Conifer, we were happy to arrive at Terry and Judith’s place ahead of the crazy weather being predicted for the next couple of days.  It was smoky due to the Grand Lake and Cameron Peak fires, but the weather was nice enough for us to enjoy some adult beverages on their gorgeous new deck!  We are so grateful for friends that so graciously open their homes to us during our travels.  Terry and Judith really saved our butts this time - the Gunnison area ended up getting sub-freezing temperatures and over a foot of snow.  We would not have fared well with our little pop-up camper under those conditions.  Instead, we were warm and comfortable and had great company while the storm raged around us!  We played games, watched movies, and enjoyed some awesome food and adult beverages.

By Wednesday afternoon the weather was clearing and we were getting a little stir crazy.  The guys shoveled the deck and Terry cleared the driveway using the snowblower.  We decided to take a drive down to Littleton and check out a couple places, just to stretch our legs.

CHATFIELD & ROXBOROUGH STATE PARKS

We took a drive around the reservoir at Chatfield, checking out all of the changes that had been made to the shoreline in the past couple of years.  We exited out of the south end of the park and decided to go to Roxborough for a walk.  What a great decision that was!

The park was beautiful with all of the fresh snow and we had quite the wildlife experience.  We actually spotted a mountain lion, about a hundred yards from us, running across an open field.  I was bummed that I didn’t have a camera with me, just my phone, that could take a picture from that distance.  But we all had the chance to see it as it ran across the open field and then up the hillside and out of sight.  So amazing!  We continued on our trail and were able to find its footprints in the snow:

We also found fairly fresh bear scat further down the trail and a bear print in the snow:

We didn’t see the bear, but after seeing a mountain lion and seeing the bear print we were really keeping our eyes open as we completed our walk around the trail.

What a fun group!

So glad that we ventured out into the cold today!  We ended our adventure with lunch and an adult beverage at the Arrowhead Golf Course restaurant.  We were the only folks in the place - great views from our table!

DINOSAUR RIDGE

Our last day with Terry and Judith, we decided to drive down to Dinosaur Ridge and check out the prints.  The museum was closed, due to COVID restrictions, but we were able to hike up the road and along the ridge.  After our hike, we drove back up to Evergreen and stopped at the Evergreen Brewery for some munchies and brews.

JANKY SHAPES MADE OUT OF WOOD! There are four janky shapes: a cabinet; a very tall bed frame; a cube that goes over the toilet; and (not pictured) a low shelf with storage underneath that goes across the back of the van. Prior to this, my only experience building janky shapes out of wood was when I was 15 and built a treehouse. So the build quality of all this isn’t great, but so far none of it has collapsed, and that’s really all I’m going for. The white cloth stuff is an old sail. I figured it would a) look kind of neat and b) save weight compared to using plywood panels. It’s also cheaper than plywood -- a guy down near Chatfield Reservoir south of Denver with a boatyard was willing to trade an old sail for a bottle of medium-shelf red wine. I’d like to incorporate more of those found/repurposed/traded/recycled materials like that, but the pandemic makes it tricky. It was nice to be able to use a lot of scrap wood: some of the frames and paneling for these janky shapes were old 2x4s and plywood that my brother just had lying around.
