However, before she can officially move there, she had to find an affordable apartment within her budget and she was glad to see she had found one from an ad online from Craigslist about a two bedroom and one bathroom apartment for $800 a month. She wasn’t sure why she decided on a two bedroom, but it was the cheapest one in all of Magnolia and the University was about a twenty minute walk which was perfect in her eyes!

Natsu looked up at the raven haired waitress who was standing across from him with a bright smile on her face, pen and notepad in each hand as she waited for him to place his order.

Natsu ran a hand through his pink spiky hair, not even bothering looking at the menu that was in front of him. “Get me four burgers, four fries and two shakes. Thanks.”

The waitress paused at her writing, confused. She cleared her throat. “Is there someone coming soon with you?”

Natsu rolled his eyes at her with a scoff. “No, I have high metabolism. My stomach can handle this.”

The waitress nodded as she resumed writing down his order. “Give us about forty minutes for your food, okay?”

Natsu nodded in response as he watched the waitress walk away.

Forty minutes later, his nose twitch as the smell of his food came towards him. As soon as the waitress sat it down in front of him, he dug in, not even taking a breath or taking a break because he was soon hungry from that thirteen hour flight.

He burped loudly after finishing, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as he pushed the plate away, smirking. He’s back in Magnolia, his hometown that he hasn’t seen in years, he wonders what his childhood friends were up to, he wonders if anything had changed. So far, everything to him looks the same. He couldn’t wait for his new beginning. In fact, he’s all fired up just thinking about it. “Let the new life begin.”

A/N: I had this idea for a long while and now it’s time to write it out! I have so many ideas for this story it’s unreal! I hope you guys will like it!

A PLANET ON THE MOVE

One day in the 1980s, my maternal grandfather was sitting in a park in suburban London. An elderly British man came up to him and wagged a finger in his face. “Why are you here?” the man demanded. “Why are you in my country?”

“Because we are the creditors,” responded my grandfather, who was born in India, worked all his life in colonial Kenya, and was now retired in London. “You took all our wealth, our diamonds. Now we have come to collect.” We are here, my grandfather was saying, because you were there.

These days, a great many people in the rich countries complain loudly about migration from the poor ones. But as the migrants see it, the game was rigged: First, the rich countries colonized us and stole our treasure and prevented us from building our industries. After plundering us for centuries, they left, having drawn up maps in ways that ensured permanent strife between our communities. Then they brought us to their countries as “guest workers”—as if they knew what the word “guest” meant in our cultures—but discouraged us from bringing our families.

Having built up their economies with our raw materials and our labor, they asked us to go back and were surprised when we did not. They stole our minerals and corrupted our governments so that their corporations could continue stealing our resources; they fouled the air above us and the waters around us, making our farms barren, our oceans lifeless; and they were aghast when the poorest among us arrived at their borders, not to steal but to work, to clean their shit, and to fuck their men.

Still, they needed us. They needed us to fix their computers and heal their sick and teach their kids, so they took our best and brightest, those who had been educated at the greatest expense of the struggling states they came from, and seduced us again to work for them. Now, again, they ask us not to come, desperate and starving though they have rendered us, because the richest among them need a scapegoat. This is how the game is rigged today.

My family has moved all over the earth, from India to Kenya to England to the United States and back again—and is still moving. One of my grandfathers left rural Gujarat for Calcutta in the salad days of the twentieth century; my other grandfather, living a half day’s bullock-cart ride away, left soon after for Nairobi. In Calcutta, my paternal grandfather joined his older brother in the jewelry business; in Nairobi, my maternal grandfather began his career, at sixteen, sweeping the floors of his uncle’s accounting office. Thus began my family’s journey from the village to the city. It was, I now realize, less than a hundred years ago.

I am now among the quarter billion people living in a country other than the one they were born in. I’m one of the lucky ones; in surveys, nearly three-quarters of a billion people want to live in a country other than the one they were born in, and will do so as soon as they see a chance. Why do we move? Why do we keep moving?

On October 1, 1977, my parents, my two sisters, and I boarded a Lufthansa plane in the dead of night in Bombay. We were dressed in new, heavy, uncomfortable clothes and had been seen off by our entire extended family, who had come to the airport with garlands and lamps; our foreheads were anointed with vermilion. We were going to America.

To get the cheapest tickets, our travel agent had arranged a circuitous journey in which we disembarked in Frankfurt, where we were to take an internal flight to Cologne, and then onward to New York. In Frankfurt, the German border officer scrutinized the Indian passports belonging to my father, my sisters, and me and stamped them. Then he held up my mother’s passport with distaste. “You are not allowed to enter Germany,” he said.

It was a British passport, given to citizens of Indian origin who had been born in Kenya before independence, like my mother. But the British did not want them. Nine years earlier, Parliament had passed the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, summarily depriving hundreds of thousands of British passport holders in East Africa of their right to live in the country that conferred their nationality. The passport was literally not worth the paper it was printed on.

The German officer decided that because of her uncertain status, my mother might somehow desert her husband and three small children to make a break for it and live in Germany by herself. So we had to leave directly from Frankfurt. Seven hours and many airsickness bags later, we stepped out into the international arrivals lounge at John F. Kennedy International Airport. A graceful orange-and-black-and-yellow Alexander Calder mobile twirled above us against the backdrop of a huge American flag, and multicolored helium balloons dotted the ceiling, souvenirs of past greetings. As each arrival was welcomed to the new land by their relatives, the balloons rose to the ceiling to make way for the newer ones. They provided hope to the newcomers: look, in a few years, with luck and hard work, you, too, can rise here. All the way to the ceiling.

It was October 2—Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. We made our way in a convoy of cars carrying our eighteen bags and steamer trunks to a studio apartment in Jackson Heights where The Six Million Dollar Man was playing on the television. On the first night, the building super cut off the electricity because there were too many people in one room. I stepped out and looked at the rusting elevated train tracks above Roosevelt Avenue and wondered: Where was the Statue of Liberty?

At McClancy, the brutal all-boys Catholic high school where my parents enrolled me in Queens, my chief tormentor was a boy named Tschinkel. He had blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and a sadistic smile. He coined a name for me: Mouse. As I walked through the hallways, this word followed me: “Mouse! Mouse!” A small brown rodent, scurrying furtively this way and that. I was fourteen years old.

One Spanish class, Tschinkel put his leg out to trip me as I was walking in; I kicked hard at it as the entire class whooped. “Mouse! Mouse!”

As I left the class and walked to the stairwell, I felt a hand shoving me forward. I flew straight down the small flight of stairs and landed on my feet, clutching my books; I could as easily have not, and broken my neck. When I complained to the principal, I was told that such things happen. It was within the normal order of the McClancy day.

Four decades later, another German American bully from Queens became the most powerful man on the planet. The 2016 election particularly struck home for me. Donald Trump is like the fathers of the boys I went to high school with. He grew up in Jamaica Estates, then a gated white island in the middle of the most diverse county in the nation. That explains everything about him, his fear and hatred of people different from him.

According to Trump, Haitians “all have AIDS.” If Nigerians are allowed into the United States, they would never “go back to their huts.” Mexicans? “They’re bringing drugs; they’re bringing crime; they’re rapists.” About immigrants in general: “Everything’s coming across the border: the illegals, the cars, and the whole thing. It’s like a big mess. Blah. It’s like vomit.” All this was shocking to many people, but familiar to me, because I’d heard it from the McClancy boys—and some of the teachers.

Dutch Reflections: A Take on (Non-Existent?) Culture Shock

When I first started my search for an abroad program and then selected one, the world travelers in my life started warning me about one specific thing: culture shock. Everything from what this could mean for me and how I could handle it. What to do if I got to my study location and decided within a few days that I hated it. When to recognize signs of culture shock and collect methods to resolve the issue.

           Somewhat obviously, culture shock is like academic stress or a light headache in that it affects us all very differently in different ways. Some people, especially those who do not travel until they are older and therefore do not know what another country could be like, are hit hard and fall into depression. Others, like me right now, notice the many cultural differences, but accept them rather easily.

           Generally, I’m a relaxed and chill person. I do sometimes stress easily, but I manage it pretty well. It takes a lot for something or someone to annoy me so much that I feel the need to escape the situation or say something. This is all part of why, when everybody around me began telling me I should worry about serious stress or culture shock, I didn’t give much thought to their words.

           The biggest form of stress most exchange students encounter is a language barrier. You never actually realize how important it is to communicate until you do something simple like order a drink or ask when the next bus arrives. Then, you realize it is imperative for you to be able to ask your question and receive a comprehensive response quickly. Students who go to Berlin, take German. Before Florence, they take Italian. Before Tokyo, they take Japanese. These are a handful of the places where English is hardly spoken outside of the inner city or high tourist density. If you visit these places expecting to not get lost only using your proper manners, you will be sorely mistaken.

           Before I knew of my acceptance to my program in Amsterdam, I knew there was almost no language barrier. I’ve written about this prior to this post, but one can travel almost anywhere in the Netherlands and whomever you need to interact with likely speaks borderline fluent English.

           Because of knowing this, the currency, and some general background history, I had expected I wouldn’t be hit too hard by culture shock.

This summer, I lived with eighteen other college students whilst doing an internship in Edgewater, Maryland. Of course, this meant I did not live alone and when I wanted a friend I could just walk into the common room and strike conversation. We did, however, each live off of our own paychecks and food. My parents provided me their spare car for the summer, so once a week I went grocery shopping and bought $40 worth of the cheapest one-person groceries I could buy.

We drove ourselves everywhere, cooked for ourselves, paid our own rent, and took ourselves to the urgent care center in town when we had tick bites and sinus infections. It was the first time in my life I was providing almost completely for myself. My parents took care of my phone bill and bought me a round-trip plane ticket to a family wedding in late July, but I did most everything else.

It was a huge wake-up call, showing me that yes, I could survive on my own if thrown into a poverty-stricken scenario. On the other hand, the experience showed me how much I need to learn. How to cook proper and healthy meals, track spending, and manage time. How to reallyspeak to people with eye contact and confidence. Truthfully, when I return to life as a normal college student in the spring, I’m not even sure how I’ll be able to bring myself to letting somebody else keep cooking for me.

With all of this under my belt, I got on my first ever international flight from Philadelphia to Dublin, worrying really only about how to catch my connection in Dublin to Amsterdam (it turns out, Dublin Terminal 2 is extremely small, and you can catch a connection in under thirty minutes). The first week I was here, I was whisked so quickly between orientation activities and new friends to the point where I wasn’t even trying to keep up with how my surroundings had changed.

It wasn’t until the end of the week, when I started going to the store and restaurants without a tour guide, that I realized I was really in a new country, living there.

A changing cultural aspect I was actually looking forward in the summer was the Dutch bluntness. The Dutch are known for how direct they can be, speaking in terms that we would deem rude in America. If you are standing in a group blocking the sidewalk, a Dutch person will simply part their hands and force you to separate. If you use sarcasm toward a Dutch person, they will take you literally. Truthfully, I do like this, as it feels good for someone to simply say what they mean. The sarcasm, however, takes adjustment.

Yesterday, I went out to dinner with two of my international friends. After a week of what felt like eating on the go or eating in a student environment, we all agreed it was delightful to venture on our own and eat food with other adult human beings.

The place we chose was an Italian restaurant, located in a tourist square not far from the opera house in Amsterdam. We approached the outdoor seating, and a waiter beckoned us in and handed us menus. We sat for maybe ten minutes, people-watching, until another waitress came by and took our food and beverage order. Another few minutes went by, and food and beverage came.

Now, keep in mind that because I am learning to bike in Amsterdam and the public transportation is difficult to learn, expensive, and sometimes unnecessary, I walked everywhere last week. According to my phone, I walked about 7-10 miles every day the first five days I was here. This includes the first day, when I was so jetlagged, I could have cried every time somebody spoke to me.

So, because of this, I’ve been drinking water. Lots of it, constantly. One of the weirder cultural aspects of Amsterdam I very much appreciate is that drinking water comes from the tap, and all taps are usable. People fill their water bottles using hoses sticking out of the ground in public spaces, something unheard of in America.

As I sit at this lovely restaurant eating our pasta, I finish my water in probably just two gulps, and patiently wait for the waiter to come refill it. And I wait. And I wait some more.

Eventually, my friend asks for a refill, and another waitress returns with an entirely new glass of water. I consider asking for one but decide not to bother.

After several minutes of sitting with our plates clean and glasses empty, we begin to wait for the check. In the back of my mind, I begin wondering if the food will soon be free because the service is presumably horrid.

Then, my other friend suggests an article she read before we arrived, one that described restaurant customs in the Netherlands. Basically, unlike in America where the staff routinely refills your drink and brings your check in a timely manner, you must ask for everything you need.

I don’t dislike this because I am too lazy to ask for the check, or flag down a waitress for more beverage. I dislike it because it feels demeaning to the staff to ask them for everything, like a needy child in a supermarket. Yet, when we ask the waitress for the check, and then to split it, she does it with a large smile spread across her face. It’s interesting.

What is perhaps most shocking about culture shock, is that what can seem extremely rude or weird to you is entirely normal for everybody else around you.

Many parts of Amsterdam look and feel just like America. This is mostly in the city center where fast food chains and cheap gifts line the canals for American tourists. In other areas, such as Amsterdam West and the Red-light District, the Dutch allow what we consider their freak flag to fly at top mast.

Amsterdam is pretty much known for liberal views and tolerated pot, along with several cultural norms that most other countries view as inappropriate or odd. Yet, mixed into that oddity is a brand new perspective one may find interesting if they have the courage to step outside their country’s own beliefs.

How to travel on a budget?

Today I want to take time and answer a question I am asked quite frequently: How am I able to afford travelling the world?

Well, let me tell you that I do recommend to save up a little money even if just to keep it as a prudent reserve while you are on the road having fun. One never knows what can happen while we are out exploring and let‘s get serious here for a minute – safety first, guys!

While you are backpacking around the globe there are however several life-hacks on how to safe money that are worth knowing and that I was able to learn through my own wandering.

1.) Do your research, know your stuff – hacks on flights & visas ✈

Saving money starts early on with booking a flight and applying for your visas. You do not need a travel agency to book your flights for you. There are countless websites out there allowing you to book online from your couch. Some of them even offering you to make up your own route so you don‘t have to fly back from the same country you arrived in.

Make sure to always use the ‘incognito window’ when browsing for flights as websites will be able to know what flight prices you have been shown before by using their cookies. Also, flight prices are at their lowest when you fly in and out on a Wednesday and if you book on a Thursday around midnight. One of the best websites to check for the cheapest offers out there is skyscanner. If you found and offer for a direct flight (where you don’t have to change the airline) it can also pay off to book the flight on the airlines website directly as you can save up on commission.

As for visas, depending on where you are going and what passport you hold it might not be necessary to get a visa in advance. If you are looking to get ETA (Canada) or ESTA (USA) make sure to only apply for these visas on the official government website and don’t let yourself be tricked into buying over an agency. Current prices (2019) should be a maximum of $7 for ETA and $14 for ESTA. If you are traveling in central or south America as well as south east Asia you do not have to get visas for every country in advance just make sure you have one for the country you are flying into. Crossing the borders from one country to another in south east Asia (exception for China) and central/south America is usually quite easy going and all you need is your passport and a couple of spare passport photos of yourself to put on the forms. You usually won’t have any problems crossing the borders on both plane or bus.

2.) Save money on accommodation

Finding the right hostel is usually an easy business. Countless platforms offer millions of options for cheap backpacker hostel’s around the globe. Trust me, I must know, I run one. I personally mostly use booking.com as they offer the best conditions for customers when it comes to flexibility of modifying or terms of cancellation. If you already know where you are heading and are certain your plans won’t change it is worth booking the non-refundable rate as it is usually 10% cheaper than the standard rate but as the name suggests, you cannot cancel your booking free of charge. Another little insider tip is to book on the hostel’s website directly (if there is one) as you can usually save up on booking commission that would be charged through a platform. Also, if you are intending to stay at the same place for a longer period (at least a week) it might be worthwhile to drop the hostel a direct message and ask for an offer and a reduction. Usually they are happy to give 10% off if you are staying longer and book directly.

If you are traveling as a group (at least 2 people) and also if you are traveling in areas such as south east Asia or south/central America it often is quite worthwhile to check out options on http://www.Airbnb.com. Apart from sometimes coming across rather unique accommodations (such as tree houses or igloos) you will often find double rooms for the same price as two bunks in a hostel and if you are traveling as a group you might even be able to rent an entire apartment for a really good price.

If you are an absolute low budget enthusiast you can check out couchsurfing, a social network where youngsters offer their couch or a spare room to travelers for free. Or, especially if you are travelling in warm countries, you might want to bring your tent or a hammock. Many hostels in warmer regions are used to people just paying to use the shower rooms while they set up their tents in the garden or yard.

3.) Get around cheap

When in Rome do as the Romans do. This also goes for getting around. Avoid tourist traps by taking the local bus (in comparison: crossing the border from Costa Rica to Nicaragua cost us about 3,50 $ on the local bus and would have been around $50 on the official bus bookable online). However, in countries where you have to cover hundreds of miles it might pay off to book tickets online and in advance. Buses are generally cheaper than trains. Affordable long distance companies would for example be Tiki bus (all of south and central America) or Greyhound (USA, Canada, Oz).

If you do not know how to start finding any options to get from A to B check out www.rome2rio.com. Some countries, such as Australia or New Zealand also tend to have a very organized backpacking-community and it is easy to hitch a ride with someone leaving a hostel to go see a national park or drive to another city. If you are staying long term it is always worth checking out the notice board in hostels to find a ride to share or just boldly ask around in the common room (yes, it actually works).

4.) Working abroad

Whether you are able to acquire a working visa or not there is always a way to find work abroad.

Workaway & WWOOFING: Both Workaway and WWOOFING (=working on organic farms for free) are online portals that allow you to connect with people around the world in order to find work in exchange for accommodation and sometimes a little pocket money. Unfortunately, both platforms require you to pay a fee, it is however worth investing if you are intending to stay in a country for a longer time and therefore need to look after your finances. Workaway requires an annual fee of around 35 EUR and enables you to surf profiles of users worldwide while WWOOFING gives you the opportunity to buy a list of addresses of farmers of a specific country. None of the jobs offered on such platforms should require any particular work experience nor a working permit as you are not getting paid. However, some individuals might still require the applicants to hold a work and holiday visa nevertheless so make sure to talk this through with a possible host in advance. Workaways are not only a nice way to save up on some money but are also often quit an experience in itself, whether you end up planting trees, saving turtles or working on a ranch or in a surf camp, they can be worthwhile just for the experience itself.

If you want to take a gap year it might be of interest to check out whether your country is allowed to apply for a ‘work & holiday visa’. Such visas give you both a one year permission to stay as well as a permit to work. Personally, I applied for this when I was staying in Australia and New Zealand. It was a great way to afford travelling for a year. With a ‘work and holiday visa’ you are able to apply for any workaways as well as every regular paid job and you pay taxes like everyone else (so make sure to apply for a tax return before heading home).

In countries that are used to seeing a great amount of working backpackers you are able to find work via notice boards in Hostels, through platforms such as ‘gumtree’ or in case of Australia, by calling the national fruit picking hotline. As countries like Australia rely on backpackers for most of their farm work it is super easy to get placed at a farm in need of more hands by ringing up the hotline within a few days.
