I'm going to throw my two cents in to the conversation about why James Somerton didn't get caught earlier. Part of the answer is of course that he did get caught, he just bullied and lied to get away with it for a while, but I know a lot of people still express confusion. And of course he went out of his way to make sure his audience didn't know about other queer history sources other than himself. But still. How could he have so many viewers of his videos and none of them had seen X source material?
Well. To be blunt, most of his videos were pretty basic. He tended to copy the highlights of what he was plagiarizing, not the really advanced stuff. And insofar as he copied the advanced stuff, he had a tendency to chop it up and serve it out of context alongside other plagiarized work. The material he was presenting was revolutionary to an audience unfamiliar with queer history, but like. I'm guessing 'Disney villains are queer coded' is not exactly a new concept to the kind of people who read multiple books about queer coding in film.
Now I'm not a film studies person, I'm a physicist. But you know what I do when I get a video in my YouTube recommendations about some fairly basic physics concept?
I skip it. No shade to the creator, but like. I hit that topic a decade ago and I've added literally thousands of hours of studying and research to my brain since. I'm just going to give it a pass, all right?
These kinds of videos self-select for an audience which isn't going to be familiar with the source material. The people who know it are unlikely to keep listening after the first minute or so.
And you've got to remember how much of this content the experts have consumed! With very few exceptions for weird little things that stuck in my head after all these years, I would probably not notice a physics explanation plagiarized from one of my textbooks! Not because I wasn't intimately acquainted with the textbook, but because I was intimately acquainted with many such textbooks. Spend enough time learning this stuff and it all blurs together a little bit. Does this explanation sound familiar because you've heard it before, or because you've just read books which cover this specific topic seven different times? And does that wording or that example ring a bell because it's plagiarized, or because it's common to the field?
Catching this kind of plagiarism requires having the kind of people who are already familiar with these sources, and therefore uninterested in video summaries on the topic, to watch the video. And among those people who do, it requires them to match Somerton's words to one specific source on the topic out of many, that they probably read quite some time ago. And then you have the filter of how many of those subject matter experts have the source on hand to check, to turn a vague "...hmm" into something solid.
If you know enough about queer history to say that some of his plagiarism was obvious, now that you've watched the video, then you should remember that there is a reason you probably weren't one of the people watching his videos! And because YouTube promotes videos through algorithmic engagement, none of this stuff has to pass the sniff test for any other expert in the field before it gets released. No experts have to like it for it to get published or for it to get good reviews or for it to get a recommendation in, I don't know, the New York Times.
The only people who have to like the videos for them to get traction are people who are just trying to learn introductory queer history and film theory. The exact people who aren't going to notice this. And for those of you who to whom it is obvious, ask yourself. When was the last time you watched a basic level queer history introduction on YouTube?

I know I don't owe anyone explanations—but I do feel a kind of emotional responsibility, especially since I know this space is a source of comfort for some of you. So just in case I seem a little more quiet than usual from now on:
I recently got some really heavy news about a family member's health. I'm still processing it. Still figuring out how to exist around it.
I might be less active for a while. Slower. Quieter. But I'm still here, just moving through it softly.
Thanks for holding space for that. Please take care of yourselves and each other. ♥︎

all of my stories are written in limited point of view. you are reading from inside the character’s head—their thoughts, their feelings, their assumptions. that means unreliable narration. they will misinterpret things, make flawed judgments, and romanticize behaviors they shouldn’t. that is on purpose. you are expected to separate character perspective from authorial intent.

Useful free tools for writing.
More of the incidental tools that I find useful, regardless of how one usually writes that are often known in the writing community, but you might not know?
One Look dictionary
Reverse word look up. You know when you're getting stumped on a word you kinda know, but only can get the definition of, or you want to make sure your 3-word phrase can't be said more succinctly? Yeah, this resource should help. (The underline is a link)
Google Docs
I should note that after about 100K words, it starts to struggle. But it's good for editing, collab work, spreadsheets, and also keeping track of your previous drafts so if someone says, "But, but you plagiarized from me," you have a log saying you didn't, so you can say, "you likely took from me."
And so on.
Libre Office–because not everyone wants to deal with Google Docs or can afford Microsoft office. It also has a recovery function, so if it crashes, you can get your words back. (Microsoft Office often doesn't?)
Use it for formatting your manuscripts. For the editors out there, accept ODT format. This is absolutely free and sometimes it doesn't port well.
Rhyming dictionaries–yes, they exist. The slant rhyming is also useful. There are slant rhyming dictionaries too.
The almighty square bracket. []
To all of you discovery writers out there that can't afford Scrivener. This is the tool for you. You've written and dumped all this information into the text that shouldn't belong there, but you want to keep it. What do you do? You square bracket it.
If not that, there is also the curly bracket if you need a sub category. {
It's great for:
Editing notes.
Please expand this note to yourself.
Examine this phrase later because you moved on, but it doesn't sound right.
Cataloging important information you might need at a later date.
Info dumping that you want to break up.
Storing long descriptions you want to use elsewhere.
You're too lazy to catalog in your world building notes great information.
You have ADHD and some other idea has occurred to you, but it's totally off topic. Square bracket.
To avoid plagiarism 'cause you forgot you pulled a source.
If you're one of those super detailed people, you can also color code it. The reason is that both curly and square brackets almost never show up in manuscripts. <> sometimes does, but also often doesn't.
The best part is no matter your program, format, or keyboard, you have it.
Note that this doesn't work for Japanese as well, but Japanese also have access to {} which is why I noted it here.
Spreadsheets
You need to make a calendar for your planet and need the quick calculations.
You need to make a morpheme list for your mythical language.
You want to delineate gender quickly.
This usually comes with Google Spreadsheets, Microsoft Office and Libre Office. But writers often (me included) forget they exist.
But they are useful for more than number crunching. And some writers use them for plotting too.
For Fantasy/SF writers: Donjon:
The whole website, but particularly the Fantasy Calendar maker is useful.
Google Search: Quotes.
You want to fact check a quote. Or you got distracted and forgot to put in the citation information.
To be or not to be
is horrible search for. So what you do is this:
"To be or not to be."
And you might get Will Shakespeare.
BTW, Goodreads is a horrible horrible source for finding out where quotes came from. Make sure you have the actual page number/place it was said with the surrounding quotes.
Equally, the -[item] is also often useful when you're searching.
You're looking up say... Kimchi, and you want search results that don't have napa in it You would type "kimchi -napa"
You are researching... I hope, I hope.
Public domain books: Project Gutenberg
You need a back issues of Gustav Freytag's Dies Techniks des dramas.
You need the quote from Anne of Green Gables.
You want to check if this Winnie the Pooh quote is in the earlier or later works because of public domain issues.
You need to read The Art of War for the tenth time.
You need to read Machiavelli's The Prince, because you are writing politics and war.
This is the place to find it. Sometimes, sometimes it is public domain, but it's not in there.
Library
Libby (app), for example. Sign up for it. Get a library card and you'll save yourself money. Some countries don't have one, but for the ones that do, you can read print books and consume audiobooks at home.
Often self-pubbed books are on there too. If you have an amazon account then you can use the kindle app with it.
Sometimes you can also go to university libraries and though you can't check anything out, you can use their catalogs to look up things. You sometimes have to be there, but often they give links to free resources in their catalogs and might be easier to use than JSTOR. You don't have to be a student. Just be respectful of the people there, and try to put the books back where you found them. (usual library stuff).
This will save you going to Hawaii for the University of Hawaii, for example, because you know they have some awesome East Asian resources.

This is for the 🦈 anon, but anyone can use this.
A lot of professors use a website called Turnitin. Basically an ai detection website. It tagline is pointed to Chatgpt, but basically any website that uses ai will be 'detected'. That includes Grammarly, with its similar grammar patterns or something
I tried signing in to see what it was like, gave up when it asked me for a teacher's code or whatever
But, from my limited knowledge. There's a percentage meter that goes through the writing and tags thing that could possibly be 'plagiarism' and gives evidence/locates 'original source'
Reason that's in quotes, it's flawed. The pattern it detects for ai can sometimes confuse itself.
So if anyone finds a way to use it, don't be surprised when it give you a percentage of over 20 something. And don't aim for 0 either, that's basically impossible if you want to sound coherent.
Sorry for the ramble. I just wanted more people to know and not lose their shit like I had.
Almost lost 3 important grades because I had used Grammarly to spell check and was never told why till much later.
-Lurker
I'm sorry that happened to you lurker but yeah, it's scarry how dog shit ai detection tools are.
One of my professors told me a story where the ai detection website said her work was made by chatgpt by quoting her OWN research paper to her that had been published a couple years ago.
So stay safe everyone and be careful what you use online

I've seen a lot of writers on social media* commenting on how they "only" use AI for certain parts of the process, such as checking grammar/pacing, editing and "generating ideas".
All of these are bad habits, but it's the last one that gets my goat. WHY? That's the easiest and most fun part? You're getting help from the glorified search engine to give you only the most cliche and/or plagiarized ideas?
Hey, here are a couple of other (better, healthier) ways to get ideas:
-Go take a walk or do some chores without headphones on.
-Read random articles on Wikipedia. Try thinking up ways to include the themes on your project (you're not obligated to, but it's a cool exercise).
-Go study some history, start with weird historical events and then focus on any period you find relevant/interesting. Real life events are a great source of inspiration, and taking ideas from them will help you from becoming too derivative of other fiction.
-Write down how a very incompetent writer would do your project (this will get the brain-gears turning and inspire you to do different).
-You know the rubber duck trick? Where programmers talk out loud about faulty code to an inanimate object til they figure out the problem? Yes, it works for writing.
*Mostly in Threads.

plagiarism checker
Sure! Here's a blog post with the heading based on the keyword "Plagiarism Checker":
Plagiarism Checker: A Must-Have Tool for Writers, Students, and Professionals
In today’s digital age, originality is everything. Whether you're a student writing a research paper, a blogger publishing articles, or a business creating marketing content, ensuring your work is plagiarism-free is crucial. That’s where a Plagiarism Checker becomes an invaluable tool.
What is a Plagiarism Checker?
A plagiarism checker is a software tool that scans your text and compares it with a vast database of online content, academic papers, books, and journals to detect similarities. It identifies copied or closely paraphrased content and highlights the sections that need citation or revision. Most checkers also provide a percentage score indicating how much of your content matches existing sources.
Why is Plagiarism Checking Important?
Maintains Academic Integrity
For students, plagiarism can lead to serious academic consequences, including failed assignments or expulsion. A plagiarism checker helps verify that your work is original and properly cited.
Protects Your Reputation
Writers, journalists, and bloggers must protect their credibility. Publishing plagiarized content, even accidentally, can harm your professional image and result in legal issues.
Improves SEO Rankings
Duplicate content is penalized by search engines like Google. Using a plagiarism checker helps ensure your content is unique, boosting your chances of ranking higher in search results.
Encourages Better Writing Habits
Knowing your work will be checked for plagiarism promotes ethical writing practices and encourages proper citation and paraphrasing techniques.
Features to Look for in a Plagiarism Checker
When choosing a plagiarism checker, consider the following features:
Comprehensive Database: The larger the database, the more thorough the scan.
Detailed Reports: Look for tools that provide clear, actionable feedback.
Citation Support: Some checkers suggest proper citations or include citation generators.
Multilingual Support: Helpful for non-English content or multilingual publications.
User-Friendly Interface: A clean, intuitive interface makes the process quick and easy.
Popular Plagiarism Checkers
Grammarly: Offers a robust plagiarism checker along with grammar and style suggestions.
Turnitin: Widely used in academic institutions for student submissions.
Quetext: Known for its deep search and color-coded feedback.
Copyscape: Popular among web publishers and SEO professionals.
Final Thoughts
Using a Plagiarism Checker is not about policing creativity—it’s about ensuring authenticity, protecting your reputation, and upholding standards. Whether you’re writing an academic thesis, a blog post, or a company newsletter, running your work through a plagiarism checker is a smart and responsible step. In a world overflowing with content, originality truly stands out.
Let me know if you want this turned into a downloadable blog post or tailored to a specific audience (like educators, marketers, or students).

Blog Assignment #4
This week, our class has revolved around three major threads. One is about AI, how we handle it, and how we might as well handle it in our professional lives down the road. Another is about final projects, how we get from weak drafts to strong, even revelatory, completed arguments. The other thread is speculative fiction, what it is, what it's good for, and why, if we're not writing it ourselves, we should at least be reading it.
To start, our professor drove into us the idea that tools such as ChatGPT or DeepSeek should be viewed as research starters, not cheat codes. We explored the matter of how large-language models hallucinate citations and why that can turn a paper or even a court case into a "#not my fault!" situation. We discussed the staggering amount of water and electricity that AI farms consume: The AIs need to be fed, too. TL;DR of the class felt like it could be recited in one line: Double-check every AI-generated fact and link, and remember that if you try to pass off a bot's prose as your own, you're committing plagiarism.
Second, we went into detail on the mechanics of the last assignment. No matter if you're writing a 1,800-word essay or producing a short film or story, the 750-word rationale is the heaviest-weighted part. At least 75% of that rationale has to be an analysis of three class works and their themes. Anything less bleeds points. The professor's hack: write the rationale first so you don't get all caught up in filming or drafting and end up gushing about your project instead of citing course texts. Essay-track students were told to root their main argument in the rule of three. Three subtopics (say, violence, technology, or hope) and three concrete examples from each work, plus two scholarly sources that talk about the works, not just big ideas in general.
At last, this week’s session veered into the territory of alternate histories and Afrofuturism. After roasting the 1995 film White Man’s Burden for its shallow premise of switching roles, we welcomed novelist and screenwriter Stephen Barnes, who explained the extensive research done over many years that went into his book Lion’s Blood. In it, he postulates a very different America. To build this story, he relied on geographical advantages: the east-west trade lines are much better for development than the north-south lines. Horses are so much better for development in places where horses live than zebras that can’t be tamed. He also relied on some cultural factors: you’d get a much more civilized society from an Islamic colonization than from a European one.
A pattern that keeps emerging across all these conversations is that our professor wants us to marry creativity with rigor. Testing AI outputs, outlining an essay, or reframing the Atlantic slave trade. Whatever the task, the mantra is the same: verify sources, trace the why, and show the work.
