Treasure Planet Shorts: Weekend
It had been a very long week with midterms well underway for the cadets of the Interstellar Academy. Thankfully, the weekend was now upon the students. While many chose to use their time to decompress, Kate had been buried up to her ears in her textbooks to assure that she didn’t fall behind in her assignments. However, despite her dedication, even Kate knew she had a limit. When she found herself reading the same sentence over and over again, she decided it was finally time to at least catch a late lunch.
Packing up her books, she left her dorm, and headed down the hall toward the central commons area of her barracks. It was here tables and chairs, a weathered sofa, and even a scuffed up billiards table had been set up to allow the students a space to decompress or gather to socialize between classes. There was the usual hubbub that greeted her, with a couple of students taking a stab at playing pool. Kate was all set to walk past them when she spotted two familiar figures at a table against the far wall.
Jim and Onyx sat in front of the tall window allowing natural light to flood the warm commons room as they focused intently on a checkered board beneath them.
“Jim, Onyx,” Kate greeted as she drew closer. Jim’s concentration broke as he looked up.
“Hey, Kate. What’s up?”
“I was just finishing up with my astronomy assignment and thought I’d grab lunch when I saw you two,” Kate explained. A flicker of a frown crossed Jim’s expression when Onyx spoke up.
“I believe it’s nearly quarter to five, is it not?”
Kate’s ears flicked back in embarrassment as a smirk tugged at Jim’s lips.
“Here,” he chuckled, standing up as he grabbed another chair from a nearby table and slid it over. “Onyx and I were going to grab dinner after this game anyway.”
Kate accepted the seat as the three made themselves comfortable once more.
“Checkers?” she lifted an eyebrow.
“Yeah, I’ve mainly played spacer checkers since that’s the version I grew up with, but B.E.N. taught me Galaxy checkers over the semester break,” Jim elaborated.
“I take it you’re more familiar with Galaxy checkers?” Kate asked Onyx.
“To some extent,” Onyx dipped his head. “Though, I am far better versed in its cousin: Solar Chess.”
“Who’s winning?”
“Currently? Me,” Onyx rumbled as he skipped the last three of Jim’s pieces and collected his chips. Jim’s eyebrows rose before he snorted.
“Thought you couldn’t skip more than two.”
“Not in Galaxy checkers,” Onyx’s stoic face broke into a small smile.
“So you move your pieces with the intent to collect your opponent’s?” Kate clarified. Jim and Onyx both turned to look at her as Kate felt heat creep up her neck. “What?”
“You’ve never played checkers?” Jim asked.
“No, I haven’t,” Kate retorted, a tad defensive now. “Card games were far more popular among my father’s associates.”
“Do you want to play me?” Jim grinned.
“Weren’t we going to get supper?”
“C’mon, Kate. One game. You beat me, you can have my dessert.”
At the mention of food, Morph oozed out of Jim’s pocket with a wide yawn and trilled.
“Soon, Morph,” Jim assured him, but the shapeshifter was already twirling around Kate in greeting. Kate wasn’t as amused by Morph’s antics as Jim, but she did reach up to tickle the shapeshifter. “We’ve gotta introduce Kate to her first board game.”
Kate gave Jim a flat look, “I’ve played board games before, Hawkins.”
“Thought you said it was only cards.”
“Just give me that,” Kate grumbled, snatching up the chips that Onyx had used as the two switched places. “Onyx, would you referee? I don’t know if I trust him not to cheat.”
“That’s rich coming from you,” Jim scoffed.
“At the very least, you’ll find a way to bend the rules.”
“I—”
Onyx cleared his throat loudly with a roll of his eyes. “Can I at least explain said rules to Miss Blake before you two continue this…lively debate?”
As Jim and Kate settled in, Onyx explaining the overall concept of Galaxy Checkers, Jim couldn’t help noticing the slight pinch to Kate’s brow as she bent over the board to absorb the information. It was…kind of cute—
“Jim,” Onyx interrupted his train of thoughts. “Your pieces?”
“Right,” Jim coughed, embarrassment shaking him from his thoughts as he set up his pieces. As soon as he did, Kate had already chosen her own chip and slid it into place.
“Your move,” she said crisply. Seeing the spark of a challenge in her eyes, Jim buckled in.
“You’re on,” he grinned wickedly. So the game commenced with Jim and Kate adjusting their pieces, throwing zingers back and forth across the table while Onyx tried, in vain, to keep them in check. Morph even eased into the fun at one point by disguising himself as a rogue piece that nearly tripped Kate up had she not remembered the empty slot. It wasn’t long before Jim and Kate were both frowning down at the table, struggling to determine their next play.
“I can’t move,” Kate finally spoke up.
“Yeah you can,” Jim argued.
“I’m not giving you a freebee,” Kate soured.
“Then I win regardless.”
“What? You do not!”
Onyx leaned over the table to examine each piece and its position. It was true. If Kate were to move it would have to be away from Jim which would save her, but also prevent her from having any counter attack on his pieces in the future. Were Jim to give chase, he would always be just out of reach when his turn was up.
“If Kate does not want to move, it appears the both of you are at a draw.”
“What?” Jim and Kate demanded as Onyx explained the scenario. The two rival cadets stared at each other across the table then before Kate threw up her hands.
“Ugh! Of course.”
“You can still give up,” Jim teased.
“And let you have bragging rights for the rest of the semester? No, thank you. At least this way I maintain my dignity,” Kate sneered, though there was a playful gleam in her eye as she said it which Jim found wildly endearing.
“If we do not want to miss dinner as well, I suggest we conclude this demonstration,” Onyx agreed as Kate stood up and grabbed her bag.
“Yeah, I guess I am pretty hungry,” Jim replied as Morph chittered at him. “And I don’t think Morph is going to wait through another game.”
As the three cadets packed up the game and their things and left the barracks, Jim couldn’t help but enjoy the fresh, crisp air of another evening on Port Ivy. It hadn’t been easy getting on his feet at the academy to start, but with Kate and Onyx now beside him, he felt he’d finally found his place in the universe.
“So, who gets your dessert?” Kate nudged him as they walked. Jim shot a half smile up toward a large-eyed Morph, practically drooling over Jim’s shoulder.
“Who do you think?”
