Shareable Moments
We are fortunate we get to decide the things we like to do, the likes we want to do, and the things we get to do. Yes, there are also some things we should do that we maybe don’t like to do, but we get them done any way 😊. We all work hard to create the lives we want to live and enjoy the special moments. I believe those “special moments” become “extraordinary moments” we get to share them with those we love. This past weekend, Robin and I got the chance to enjoy some of those created “extraordinary moments,” not without some interesting challenges & some flaws 😊. This story is going to go off in a few different directions but, we had a great time experience the story so figured we would share the journey with you all.
This weekend, with Alaina back in PA visiting friends and Isabella out, pretty much all weekend, with Homecoming activities, Robin and I had a free weekend. Well, almost free weekend, we did still have to get Isabella to gym and back Saturday AM and then off by about 2pm Saturday afternoon. So, we had about 36 hours of “adulting.” 😊 We made a commitment when we moved back to AZ to see more of this state than we did when we last lived here. Take advantage more of the beautiful landscape we have surrounding us. That in mind, we decided to head up to Flagstaff and get some hiking/trailrunning in; unfortunately, it was parents’ weekend at NAU, Octoberfest, and a whole bunch of other things going on up there. If there were hotels available, they were exorbitantly priced, so we decided to AirBnB. There were a few places available, but we stumbled upon a Yurt to rent for Saturday night. Yes, a yurt, which I found out is a glorified tent with a wood burning stove in it. It was on the Arizona Nordic Center lands and about 30 minutes north of Flagstaff, about 8 miles from the trailhead we wanted to start our hike on Sunday. We had it set to get up there around 5pm, get all settled in, grab some dinner and hang out by the campfire before getting to bed early. Good plan, right?
Prior to heading out, we got a good morning in, work done, and chores completed around the house. Yes, we got Bella all situated and I even signed up for another race this coming weekend (foreshadowing there and more to come on that later this week.) 😊 We hit the road and as planned, got to the Yurt around 5pm. Just a side note, the drive to Flagstaff from Phoenix is an experience in and of itself; beautiful going up the hills and scenery is awesome. When we got to the yurt and plugged in our code to get the key, there was no key and found out that it seemed as someone was already staying there; sleeping bags, clothes, bags on the floor. So, I made some calls to the placed we booked through and found some other numbers of those that may be able to help. No responses and, for all but 30 seconds, we handled it pretty well. Robin suggested we head back down to Flagstaff to grab some dinner, wait for a return call, and figure out what options we had. I think the thin air was helping us calm our nerves a bit until we were driving again (side note, the campsite was about 2.5 hours from our house) and then I got frustrated because, well, I got frustrated for no reason and lost my shit for 30 seconds. Then, took some deep breaths, talked things out with Robin, and then hit up this awesome pizza place, Fratelli’s (no, not the one from the Goonie’s) for a pie and a beer (Mother Road Tower Station IPA in case you are wondering, and yes, it was fantastic.) While we were waiting for our pizza to bake, sipping on some suds, waiting for a few call backs, we looked again at hotels, AirBnB’s and anything we can find as an alternative than sleeping in our car (low temps were going to be around 35* that night). I couldn’t justify staying in a Motel 6 for $220, nothing against Motel 6 but you can turn out that light at that price 😊. (cracking myself up here) We did find a room on AirBnB but by the time I hit book, it was already taken so we just enjoyed our dinner and talked through some ideas. At this point, I wasn’t frustrated at all but just wondering, what I was, we were, supposed to be learning from this moment, what did it all mean and how could they have double booked a yurt for a night!! After about 45 minutes, and a great pizza, we made the decision to just head back down to Phoenix. It was still early, and we would get home by 930pm, get a good night sleep and hit up some new trails around our house that we’ve been wanting to try. In the meantime, we would figure out what happened on Monday when people returned to the office. We laughed that we drove 5 hours round trip but got a freeking awesome pizza out of it 😊!!!
As we drove back home, we decided to hit up the Cave Creek Regional Park on Sunday morning to do some hiking. This was cool because, we’ve not only wanted to hit this up, but it was also the home of the last ten miles, and the finish line for my race coming up this weekend. We would have a chance to check this out, do some recon, and enjoy some new trails………and that we did. There were a number of things that we experienced in these 36 hours last weekend that were awesome, but, Sunday morning, for me, was the incredibly joyful. The hike started out with about a 20-30-minute climb up this mountain. Once we got there, Robin got some pix (see above 😊) and the trail started to head down. At this point, we were on the Go John Trail, which is a 6.5 mile loop up and around this mountain range. As we started to descend, Robin said, “we can start running if you like.” She knew I wanted to log some running miles to keep my legs fresh for the race and the trail, at this point, wasn’t very technical and it was flat. Big point to note though, Robin has never run on the trails before. She has hiked a lot and we’ve been out quite a bit lately, but never ran. She is used to running on pavement or the treadmill – flat, not technical, not really much to think about. Her reservations have always been falling and getting hurt. So, we ran, and it was fantastic. She was right on my heals the entire time (see pix) and it was just great to have my partner running with me, on the trails, doing what I love to do…………” shareable moments.” But then, her fear became a reality as she caught a toe and yes, she did fall. She was fine and just her pride hurt a bit. It happens and those that have run on the trails know that roots, rocks, undulations, and trail monsters reach up and grab you. It happens to me a least once a week (more foreshadowing). The great thing, she dusted herself off after about 30 seconds said, “okay, lets go.” F$#%ing awesome!! I loved it and smile to myself. I was so proud of her. Then, about 20 minutes later, she caught another toe, didn’t fall this time but said, “okay, that’s good.” Still incredibly proud. I think overall, we got in about 2 or so miles together running on the trail and it was great. We got back to the trailhead and sat for a spell but there was another loop, about 3.5 miles, that was the finish of the race coming up, so I decided to head out while she chilled and made a few calls. It was still early, and the weather was great. This loop, Overton Trail, was like the other that it climbed for about 20 minutes and then just bombed downhill until about half-mile from the end. I was feeling good, so I decided, after the climb ended, I was going to push my pass to test my injury and see where I sit for next week. I was cruising, enjoying the trail, taking what she was giving me and then on a gradual uphill, I caught a toe and ate it. Now, I am not graceful like Robin and I tend to utter words out of my mouth; not words, just sounds of like and old man falling down the stairs. I also had left my handheld nozzle open so when I went to brace my fall with my left hand, water squirted all over me. Once again, I was thankful that no one was around to notice this awkwardness but there were people close enough to likely here it 😊.
I got back to Robin and overall it was an epic morning on the trails, with my best friend, and love of my life……running them too! Incredibly fulfilled for me and, I think she had a good time too, both are falls and all 😊. As Robin was finishing up a call, I check my phone and noticed a text from the guy with the yurt. We went back and forth on some texts and I was sharing him the confirmation emails I had got. When I sent it, at almost the same time, we both noticed that, he didn’t double book the yurt; rather I booked the yurt for Sunday to Monday (picture Homer Simpson smacking his forehead saying “DOH!!”). I guess when I put in the dates, because they were all booked Saturday, it defaulted to Sunday. When the reservation went through, I never bothered to confirm the actual dates. The dude was very nice to accommodate us, and we will be rescheduling with no questions asked, and, he didn’t judge me on my misguided moment……. neither did Robin 😊.
With all that said and as frustrating as Saturday was, it all worked out in the end, and, at the end, it was my mistake that created the opportunity for Robin and I to enjoy some miles running on the trail…..I will take all the credit, & accountability 😊, for that!!! My point though, I am really experiencing things lately that yes, things do happen for a reason and our choices do create the moments that we should be experiencing. Sometimes those moments are tough, challenging, maybe even suck, but they are all leading to something that is much greater, and for me, incredibly “shareable.”
Enjoy the pix.
