Recently watched The Skeleton Key again and was not too pleased with how Hoodoo was portrayed (especially with them saying it started in Louisiana, Hoodoo started throughout the south simultaneously). I’m noticing that the more and more I watch a movie, the more I kinda be like.. why did they portray it like that??

But I wanted to ask all of my ATR practitioners out there, hoodoo, voodoo, lucumi, isese, santeria, obeah, etc., have you ever watched a movie and felt as if your practice was portrayed in its authentic and complex form??

🌿✨ The 7 Main Orishas in Lucumi Spirituality ✨🌿

In the Lucumi tradition, we honor powerful and divine beings known as Orishas. Each Orisha governs aspects of nature, life, and human emotions, guiding us on our spiritual journey. Here are the 7 main Orishas and their divine energy:

🔑 Esu (Elegba) – The divine messenger and the opener of doors. Esu guides us through life’s crossroads, ensuring our paths are aligned with our destiny. 🛤️🔮

⚔️ Ogun – The powerful warrior, god of iron, labor, and strength. He clears obstacles, providing the energy and protection needed to forge ahead in life. 🔨💪

🌬️ Obatala – The peaceful father of all Orishas and the god of purity, wisdom, and creation. Obatala brings clarity, balance, and peace to those who seek his guidance. ☁️✨

🌊 Yemoja – The nurturing mother of the ocean, Yemoja rules over the waters and is the mother of all living things. She protects, heals, and nurtures, especially those in need of emotional and maternal care. 🌊💙

💛 Osun – The goddess of love, beauty, wealth, and fertility. Osun rules over the sweet waters and teaches us the importance of self-love, abundance, and the sweetness of life. 💫💛

⚡ Sango – The fiery god of thunder, lightning, and justice. He represents masculine energy, leadership, and passion, always ready to fight for truth and fairness. ⚡🔥

🧿 Orunmila – The wise Orisha of divination and destiny. As the keeper of Ifa, Orunmila holds the knowledge of fate and guides us towards our higher purpose with wisdom and foresight. 🌀📜

These Orishas guide, protect, and bless us in every aspect of life. They help us connect to our ancestors, heal our spirits, and fulfill our destiny. 🌿🌟

Rastreando o pensamento cosmológico africano e diaspórico

As cosmologias e tradições das religiões africanas e afro-atlânticas, incluindo o vodu haitiano, a santeria cubana e o candomblé brasileiro, tornaram-se fontes importantes de validação espiritual autêntica para esses indivíduos que rejeitam a natureza dogmática da Igreja Católica e a conexão da igreja com a história colonial da Martinica. Não é surpresa, então, que eles estejam inclinados a criticar ou se opor ao projeto bèlè légliz. Esses praticantes de bèlè mapeiam conexões históricas e simbólicas com a África e a diáspora mais ampla em como eles vivenciam o bèlè, abraçando emblemas extralocais de identidade religiosa para reivindicar suas distinções culturais da França.

Amadou, um lutador de danmyé (dança de combate de arte marcial da Martinica), um baterista e um dançarino de quase trinta anos que era um crítico declarado do cristianismo ocidental e um defensor veemente das práticas religiosas de Vodou e Lucumi. No tambor de Amadou, encontra-se uma fusão artística de ambas as tradições. Ele descreve a imagem que adorna seu tambor como um símbolo de conjuração, inspirado nos desenhos de vévé (símbolo religioso) de Vodou, que ele pintou em vermelho e branco como uma forma de homenagear seu orixá Xangô, a divindade guerreira iorubá da força, do trovão, da música e da dança. Também se encontra uma corda fina que se estende pela face do tambor, o que, de acordo com sua explicação, ajuda a produzir sons com frequências e vibrações especiais que podem permitir estados alterados de consciência entre dançarinos de bèlè e lutadores de danmyé (entrevista, 17 de maio de 2014).

Outro exemplo é Gérôme (no final dos seus trinta anos), que associa bèlè com o lwa (espírito) do Vodou haitiano Kouzen Zaka — o espírito da agricultura e protetor dos trabalhadores rurais no panteão do Vodou haitiano. De acordo com os mais velhos da tradição bèlè, bèlè é “une danse de la terre” (uma dança da terra) que era praticada por trabalhadores agrícolas para promover a fertilidade da terra e humana; eles labutavam nas plantações ao som do tambor bèlè e dançavam como uma fonte de alívio após um dia duro de trabalho. Muitos dos movimentos de dança no repertório bèlè são representativos de movimentos executados no trabalho agrícola, como ralar mandioca e cortar cana-de-açúcar. Gérôme passou os últimos anos pesquisando possíveis ligações entre o bèlè martinicano e a tradição do Kouzen Zaka no Vodou. Escrevendo sobre as danças de Kouzen Zaka no Haiti, a antropóloga da dança Yvonne Daniel descreve uma dança chamada mayi (da nação Mahi), que é dançada para anunciar a chegada do espírito de Kouzen Zaka nas cerimônias de Vodou: “Mayi… é uma dança rápida, de batidas de pés, com raízes agrícolas dentro dos rituais Rada e é imensamente importante na sociedade agrícola do Haiti” (2005, 112). Outra dança no Haiti, chamada djouba, é dançada para Kouzen Zaka, e é executada com um tambor que os haitianos chamam de matinik (Cally 1990, 18–19; S. Johnson 2012, 151). Este tambor é tocado da mesma maneira que o tambor bèlè é tocado na Martinica, e os movimentos do djouba assemelham-se a alguns dos movimentos encontrados no repertório bèlè da Martinica: “Para tocar djouba, o tambor é colocado no chão e tocado com as mãos e os pés, porque os espíritos djouba vivem na terra” (Averill e Wilcken 2008, 130).

De acordo com Gérôme, essa sobreposição entre o folclore haitiano e martinicano não é mera coincidência. Ele sugeriu que esse aspecto da herança religiosa caribenha floresceu no Haiti, livre das restrições da repressão colonial prolongada que causou a desintegração dos sistemas de crenças baseados na África na Martinica. Nos últimos anos, os organizadores do festival bienal bèlè renomearam o evento do festival de quatro dias Bèlè Djouba para homenagear esse aspecto de sua cultura. Nos encontros do festival Bèlè Djouba, oferendas de frutas são jogadas no mar e oferendas de plantas instaladas no solo enquanto dançarinos se movem com tochas de fogo ao redor das estátuas de concreto do memorial dos escravos de Anse Cafard. Assim como o significado da tradição de Kouzen Zaka no Haiti, bèlè se tornou um canal pelo qual os martinicanos podem expressar sua devoção espiritual à terra, ao solo e ao solo e homenagear seus ancestrais, que possuíam sistemas especiais de conhecimento da paisagem natural para que suas comunidades prevalecessem em circunstâncias incrivelmente duras. Os dançarinos então invertem sua procissão circular, movendo-se no sentido horário, no entanto, porque eles devem voltar e reunir a energia cósmica positiva que desce da lua enquanto ela orbita a Terra. Down to not even Christianity should be involved. Yes, they're different ways to participate in the practice. However, these broad definitions, mixed information, lack of knowledge in it's true origins, and trying to make it every other traditional/folk magic doesn't sit right whatsoever.
