Wayne knew since he was a boy that he was never going to be a parent. He decided that the first time his own left a bruise on his jaw that turned the color of beautyberries and his loving little town instead asked what he did instead of if he was okay. If it was normal - if it was what was expected of him - he wanted no damn part of it and that was fine.
He had his baby brothers birth announced around Christmastime a few years after the move to Hawkins. It didn’t really come as a huge surprise to him at the time, having noticed his mother’s stomach forming a small bump over the last couple of weeks along with a small change of diet that was out of character. He was old enough to know that the small bump was growing into a new responsibility for him. Someone to protect with all his being and honestly?
Wayne had been fucking terrified.
His little brother’s 5th birthday was an absolute nightmare. Yelling, screaming, a few new holes in the wall, a few new bruises littering Wayne’s body - an occurrence that was growing increasingly common then. He had heard the sounds of feet retreating back into their room long before when he knocked at the door and quietly let himself in. Trying hard to ignore the soft sounds of crying that was in the darkened room.
“…Why does he do that to you?”
He had asked then. A simple question that had no answer, so Wayne stayed silent.
Yeah - he was never going to become a parent. Not if he couldn’t answer simple questions like that.
His little brother was 18 the first time he landed himself his big trouble. He had heard about the various grievances he had given Hawkins police over the years from their mother and her calls, but nothing as big as grand theft auto. And of the principles car no less. That was when he stayed with Wayne in little comfy trailer for a while. That was when Wayne tried to give his hand at some advice.
“Hawkins may not be for you….maybe Chicago.”
He moved to Chicago a few months later. Met a girl years down the line of working various odd jobs around the city and everything seemed to be fine. Wayne had met her whenever they tripped down to little Hawkins to visit and she was a nice one. Full of life and with fluffy hair that was so deep a brown that it sometimes looked black. Not to mention her eyes. Wide and so very sincere and capable of every emotion across the spectrum.
When he received a call that they were expecting - Wayne had felt a familiar pang of fear. It was irrational and he knew that. It wasn’t gonna be his kid, everything with going to be fine. They were going to be wonderful parents that was going to raise a wonderful kid. Even if his brother had seemed…off the last few times they visited and talked.
The first time he held Eddie, it was only a few days after he had been born. Wayne took time off work and drove up to Chicago to visit the little guy and the new parents. He looked so small in Wayne’s arms then. Dragging an emotion out of him that he didn’t quite know how to process when he looked up to catch the look in his little brothers eyes. A look of pure fear.
Eddie was two years old when the boy’s mother had passed. Some sort of sickness that they had caught too late and it devastated everyone involved. Wayne included. Some part of him knew then that something snapped within his brother. The love of his life gone, and a toddler asking him what happened to mommy.
Wayne watched as everything deteriorated. His brother falling back into habits that he thought was long-since suppressed and even teaching them into young and rebellious Eddie that was…definitely not being looked after like he should have been. Everything culminating into a night when Ed’s father finally got caught by police, and with charges that were likely going to stick for a long, long time.
Eddie was only 11 when he came to Wayne’s trailer in Hawkins. Head freshly shaved of all the mats that had slowly been forming in hair that was so much like his mothers and with Wayne helping his duffel bag into the cozy room in the back of the trailer.
Wayne didn’t want to become a parent, but if he was going to be one: He was going to be a damn good one. He wasn’t going to scream or yell or hit or teach him bad and he was going to answer all the questions that the boy wanted answers to and he was going to protect him from everything.
He failed. He failed. He failed.
As he looked at the necklace in his hands. Turning it over in hands worn by years of hard work.
He failed.

How Shota Imanaga wound up all over Chicago before the Cubs landed the free agent
[original article]
Shota Imanaga listened to the roar of the crowd during the national anthem, taking in the scene before one of Connor Bedard’s first home games with the Chicago Blackhawks. Imanaga later returned to the United Center to buy a Michael Jordan jersey and take a picture next to the iconic statue.
This was early November, a few weeks before Imanaga entered the posting system created by Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball. Imanaga, a fixture with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the winning pitcher in Japan’s victory over Team USA in last year’s World Baseball Classic championship game, wanted a new challenge.
With a 45-day negotiating window beginning to close, Imanaga returned to Illinois at Christmastime to make himself available for meetings and reassess his options as a free agent. Octagon, the agency that represents him, has an office on Michigan Avenue and a network throughout the Chicago area. The central location made sense for possible travel ahead of Thursday’s deadline to sign a contract with a major-league club.
Imanaga and his associates posted up at a suburban hotel, getting comfort food at Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese grocery store in Arlington Heights. Imanaga worked out at Bo Jackson’s indoor facility near O’Hare International Airport. Imanaga’s group now has a collection of tourist photos around Chicago that could best be described as “Where’s Shota?”
Imanaga felt so comfortable that he wanted to stay. He just wasn’t sure that the interest was mutual.
“Each team is different and it’s a long process,” Imanaga told The Athletic on Thursday through an interpreter. “One time I mentioned, ‘I hope the Cubs offer me.’ I was kind of joking just because at that time the Cubs were out of the picture.”
Cubs executives Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are patient, logical and calculating. All throughout December and into the middle of January, the Cubs did not sign a free agent to a major-league contract or make a trade to improve an 83-win roster that subtracted Cody Bellinger and Marcus Stroman. Hoyer personally scouted Imanaga during a trip to Japan in September and remained in contact with his representatives, though the Cubs did not jump out as a frontrunner until the late stages of the negotiations.
The rest of the offseason will be shaped by that ability to pounce. The Cubs have the financial resources and the prospects to make a deal at any moment. That reality became harder to grasp during the two months of inactivity between Hoyer hiring Craig Counsell as the sport’s highest-paid manager and Imanaga signing a four-year, $53 million contract with options to take the deal to five years and $80 million. But the Cubs are very good at recruiting when they concentrate on certain free agents, making personalized pitches that previously resonated with Japanese players such as Yu Darvish and Seiya Suzuki.
The Cubs demonstrated some more creativity in Thursday’s trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving up two prospects who are talented but far way (Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope) for a reliever who will immediately slot into Counsell’s bullpen (Yency Almonte) and a left-handed hitter who crushed Triple-A pitching (Michael Busch) but was blocked by all the stars at Dodger Stadium.
Suddenly, the talk at this weekend’s Cubs Convention will shift toward the action and away from the moves that aren’t being made. Imanaga will be introduced Friday afternoon at the Loews Chicago Hotel. When Imanaga went to a Schaumburg shopping center on Wednesday — to buy a new tie in the right shade of Cubbie blue for the press conference — the clerk recognized him and double-checked by looking at the name on the credit card. The anonymity is already fading.
“The Cubs stepped in,” Imanaga said. “Their intensity level made me feel like they really wanted me.”

Christmas tag game
(Thanks for the tag @thebreakfastgenie)
It's Festivus for the rest of us so grab your Chanukah bush, your mistletoe, your pagan ritual or whatever brings you joy and come gather round the fire and celebrate your pocket friends
(Christmas tag for me because that’s what I celebrate. In a non religious way though)
Favorite nickname you've ever been given?
I never actually had a nickname before so I can’t answer that one 🫠
Where are you located?
Born, grew up, and currently live in Chicago.
What season is it where you are now?
Winter. Ten years ago there would have been at least three snowfalls by now, but there’s this thing called climate change so it hasn’t happened yet. But I hate snow so I guess it’s okay.
Favorite tradition this time of year?
I just finished making 100+ cookies to give away so probably that.
Favorite holiday food?
Ham, mac and cheese, and also cheesecakes my grandma usually makes with pie filling
Mulled wine, eggnog or hot apple cider?
I don’t like any of them to be honest, but I tried apple cider for the first time recently and it wasn’t so bad
Turkey, ham or nut roast (Or Tofurkey?)?
Ham! Turkey is already a thanksgiving food
Would you rather spend the December holidays in: a cabin in the woods surrounded by snow, or a house on the beach with sun and sand?
I hate snow.
Are you pro-snow or anti-snow?
I hate snow 😭
Have you ever built a snowman?
Not in a while but yes
Skiing or snowboarding?
I’ve tried both, failed miserably, so can I say sledding?
Favorite holiday movie?
Technically not a holiday movie, but I love The Apartment and it takes place during Christmastime and ends on New Years Eve so…
Favorite holiday fanfic?
Does this fanfic for The Apartment count??
If you were to star in a hallmark movie, who would be your love interest?
Uh… can I resurrect Dee Dee Ramone? I hate Hallmark with a passion but I’m a sucker for shitty movies with 70s rock stars
Tagging (no pressure though!!): @wool-hat7, @conversiontherapyforwerewolves, @thequeerestdad, @ouatihell, @purrtyhatemachine, @a-world-in-a-grain-of-sand, @hawkp

This past is kind of an update and kind of a trauma dump so… jsyk. CW psychiatry, eating disorders
T minus 10 days until what will likely be a lengthy inpatient stay. I am terrified - I’ve had bad experiences with psych wards, so while I know that this is the ED unit of a private hospital and therefore a lot… safer and nicer, my brain is reminding me of all the awful shit I’ve witnessed or endured courtesy of Public Psychiatry.
I am also so freaked out about the food and not being able to exercise and of course the weight restoration process, ugh. I am already struggling with intense dysmorphia and a strong belief that I need to decrease my intake significantly. PLUS, I will be missing Fall and all the happy cosy nonsense the season brings, and my birthday, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and maybe even Christmastime.
The hospital is a 2-hour commute for my husband. I wish it weren’t so dang far so at least folks could visit more easily. Jon wants to arrange some rotating visitor thingy, which I would admittedly hugely appreciate because I’m scared to be lonely. Though you make friends with the other patients, of course.
I did pick up some nice little craft kits, stuffed animals, cosy clothes, and books to take with me. THANKFULLY you keep your électronics, so I’ll have my phone, my Switch, and my laptop.
Anyway, here we are today doing Normal Human Things for once - back at a museum! My husband bought us a membership because it allows us to go for snatches of time and really enjoy the parts we choose to pause over. He found a cool magazine about trains and planes in Chicago that I pretended to photograph for the lolz, but plan to pick it up for him next week
