Oblivion Battery Episode 4 Review - Utterly Defeated

It was obvious the group would lose to Teitoku due to inexperience, but man, it sort of sucks that while Haruka is at Level 100, Kei is literally back at Lv. 5 from his Lv. 100 state. They’re gonna need more training because the match was totally set up so that they’d lose and have motivation to get better. What they need right now is to replace those two lame upperclassmen and get a coach. It’s obvious that the lack of guidance is their biggest weakness as Kei has amnesia, Haruka really only functions well when Kei is with him, Yamada is average, Toudou’s only good at batting and Chihaya is a jack of all trades and master of none in a way. How do you try and polish all that?

My favorite part of the episode is the manager. The way the manager just goes crazy over the powerful baseball members is hilarious. Sugita is really getting a paycheck just from yelling ‘Manager’ throughout the episode. He’s such a scene stealer and I think that the gags revolving around him doesn’t get too stale.

Kokuto is a divisive character for me. On one hand, he’s good at what he does—being a foil for Haruka and Kei and even being someone strong enough to hit the former’s pitches. He’s a good source of motivation. All sports anime needs that one rival that helps the main character grow. I like that he has a huge fan club within his team. The reasons I don’t like him is because is design is a bit too weird looking, mainly around the eyes. I also find him a tad petty Though, I do applaud him for not thinking the nipple hair joke is funny.

The main group’s play style and character are shown more here. Haruka is rather competitive and he’s seen bickering with Aoi. He also got mad at Kokuto when he didn’t find Kei’s nipple hair joke funny. He’s a good friend, but I feel like the sudden competition over a home run stems from Kei overly praising Aoi and not him. Haruka is a good friend because when he saw Kei afraid of catching his pitches, he changed his speed and only threw them half speed. Like how Yamada said, Haruka is Lv 100.

I felt bad when the ball hit Kei’s mask and he started getting scared and anxious because of it. I have this inclining feeling that his amnesia has something to do with him being struck in the head by something. I do wonder if his amnesia will ever be explored upon. Though, other than him being scared, he was mainly in charge of comedy again. I liked how last episode was him doing a Super Saiyan reference. This episode has him doing the Yamcha death pose. I think the author must really like Dragon Ball.

Aoi and Chihaya’s roles in the story were to be trolls. They were good at their roles, but they mainly poked fun of opposing players and their own teammates. Yamada still serves as narrator and doesn’t do much of importance. I hope he does something soon.

Other than that, this was a nice episode to watch to see whether or not the group will become even more serious about baseball. Will they get new teammates? Will they get a coach? I honestly can’t wait to see what happens next. What are your thoughts on this episode?

There is a new baseball anime, called Oblivion Battery, which will start to air in April 2024. I recognized all the current Japanese voice cast members' names (it's pretty stacked IMO).

...And I recognized three JP VA names, who were also in Assassination Classroom:

Mamoru Miyano as Kei Kaname (Main Cast) - Gakushu Asano

Nobunaga Shimazaki as Shunpei Chihaya (Supporting Cast) - The Reaper 2.0

Yoshitaka Yamaya as Kazuki Tsuchiya (Supporting Cast) - Tomohito Sugino
