Now I get why people love @chilternfirehouse - the place is buzzing but not snobby, the service is casual and friendly but efficient, and the food is deceptively simple but devilishly good. • We started with their crispy homemade waffle fries with a killer taramasalata dip (or you can also have it with an aubergine dip). • Then we shared the salmon tartar with salmon roe, rice crackers and pickled daikon, the “pan” con tomate which was more of a flatbread smothered in fresh tomato sauce and the pizza vongole - garlic chili and baby clams on a thin crust - what’s not to love? • Two mains for the three of us: grilled grass-fed rib eye with a lamb’s lettuce salad, the 48-hour citrus marinated grilled chicken, charcoal new potatoes with crispy onions and a cucumber herbs salad. We cleared all the plates but still left room for dessert. Chocolate chip cookies and ice cream (three of each) so we got our “own” dessert. • Was it pricey? Yes. Would I go again? For sure. I totally get it now. Louie, Oui! Apparently named for both King Louis XIV and Louis Armstrong ‘Louie' will be a Franco-New Orleans palace of fun with a two-storey restaurant, a bar area and a rooftop housed on the old ‘L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon’ site in Covent Garden - Robuchon being the most Michelin-decorated chef in the world, no less. The duo behind this new enterprise? Guillaume Glipa (‘Chiltern Firehouse’) and Parisian restaurant outfit ‘Paris Society’ (‘Loulou’ and ‘Perruche’). The restaurant will be headed up by chef Slade Rushing - who has not only left the ‘2019 New Orleans Restaurant of the Year’ to come here - but has five ‘James Beard’ noms (the “Oscars” of food). Rushing will be plating up Creole and French cuisine for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch alongside a huge oyster bar and vintage jukebox blasting out Duke Ellington. Louie, Oui! Occupying the old ‘L’atelier de Joël Robuchon’ site on West Street (a couple of doors up from ‘The Ivy’) ‘Louie’ sees the coming together of French restaurant group ‘Paris Society’ and acclaimed New Orleans chef Slade Rushing. This is the first London venture for Laurent de Gourcuff whose 'Paris Society’ restaurant group is renowned for its culinary hotspots in the French capital including ‘Girafe’ in the ‘Place de Trocadero’, ‘Loulou' in the ‘Musée des Arts Décoratifs' and ‘Perruche’ a rooftop brasserie overlooking the ‘Eiffel Tower’. The 75-cover restaurant will house an impressive 80-seat bar, live music and a resident DJ – all overseen by Guillaume Glipa the restaurant and clubs manager behind renowned celebrity hotspots ‘Chiltern Firehouse’ and ‘Annabel’s’ in Berkeley Square.
