[RDV] Chorus Battles, what’s the prob’ ?
Hello there, here’s a new article of “Racontage de Vie”, and this time I’ll write it in english, because I think this might be adressed to the whole community, and that it’s quite an important topic who should be discussed. So please forgive my english x.x (because I’m sure it’s full of mistakes xD).
Again, this is only my opinion. You might agree or not xD.
So let’s start with a reminder, for those who don’t really know what I’m talking about xD :
What are those “Chorus Battles” ?
Basicaly, Chorus battles (CB) are events / contests hosted by Youtaites, for Youtaites (mainly). The classical ones are based on a 3-4 rounds format, where groups have to produce a chorus video based on a specific theme and rules (depending on the CB). Each round, the best groups can get through the next round, until the final one which decide which group is the winner of the whole CB.
Though this type of event can be really enjoyable to watch, or to join (and it is), the fact that anyone can start their own battle make the situation kinda out of control. The number of CBs per year has litteraly increased, from 1-2 per year, to ...maybe 10 or even more per year. This is completely insane, if you ask me xD.
Then, should we simply stop Chorus Battles ?
Don’t get me wrong. I do think that Chorus Battles are good. People tend to dislike any competitive aspect, but I think that this is what people needs, to do their best, and to give them the strengh to overpass their limits, because other competitors are better than them (or that’s what they think). And let’s be totally honest, this feeling of overpassing limits is not as strong in standard chorus xD (it is there... but not as strong as during a CB).
Where it can go wrong indeed, is where people become toxic about it. Pushing other people down, instead of pushing themself up. That’s where the competitive aspect turns bad, but yeah, it entirely depends on people, not the event itself. That’s what we should blame at first xD. And I find it quite unfair when we blame an event for the eventuality of it turning into dramas (because of people), without even giving a chance to what this event can actually bring (in a positive manner).
So yeah, chorus battles are good, but the current frequency is bad ! Like I said, 10+ /y ... that’s WAAAY TOO MUCH. Just take an exemple. Like the World Cup soccer, every 4 years, Rollan Garos, Olympic games, Eurovision... Just imagine if there was like 10 events like this every year ? That would just become boring as hell, no matter how good the idea of the event was cool ! And then we realize that at this point, having a good idea is just not enough anymore to start a battle, so... CB organizers, please calm doooown ! xD.
Problem is... we can’t stop, forbid, nor control people. If they wanna start something, who are we to tell them they can’t ? They’ll do it anyway xD. The only thing we can actually control, is ourself, and even if we can’t do much, we still can do something. Like... be a little bit more selective about CBs ? And not jump into it without thinking. Because that will motivate even more other people to start more battles, as they notice that it works anyway.
So what makes a good battle ?
This might sounds a bit unfair (and I’m sorry about this), but like I said, we’re at the point where we need more than just good thoughts and original ideas to begin a battle... and yeah... popularity and fame DO counts, no matter how unfair it is (and again, sorry x.x).
Why does it count ? Because it is a guarantee of many things.
An organizer should be experienced with the community : He should know what are the current trends, should be aware of the other events running, and be in touch with a lot of people.
He also should be experienced with chorus battle : like knowing all the implications that brings such an event.
So yeah, fame and popularity bring all that, but above all, this person have to be trustworthy and reliable ! An organizer who already hosted a good and popular CBs, or a youtaite who came into many finals on popular CBs will be more likely a better organizer, than someone who comes from nowhere, or someone who made dramas previously... or gave up on many projects.
About the judges, they have to be experienced with their speciality. A mix judge should be experienced with mixing. Common sense. But again, fame and popularity DO counts, because it is a guarantee of trust and reliability. A judge who was part of a previous popular CB, or a Youtaite who is known for being good at his speciality, will be more likely a better judge than just someone who comes from nowhere, but is just a friend of the organizer. You see my point ? xD.
Again, I would be the first person to give a chance to beginners, truly. But yeah, I said it, and I will say it again and again, with the current situation with CBs, we just can’t afford that anymore x.x (not with CBs at least).
So... ?
I don’t want Chorus Battles to disappear. I just regret the old times (like an old person haha xD). Maybe it won’t change anymore, and we should just accept that 10 CBs/y is now the standard. Indeed, more CBs, means that more people can join. It gives a chance to everyone to shine in a CB. But it also means that CBs are less meaningfull, less “unique”. More people will shine, but they will shine less. So ? Quantity ? or Quality ?
