DIY Paper Ombre Plum Blossoms
Tumblr media
Project from Paper to Petal:
Our team has been obsessing over our copy of Rebecca Thuss and Patrick Farrell’s new book, Paper to Petal. Not only is it chock-full of simple and easy ways to create paper flowers (so many of which are great for crafters of all ages) but it’s also brimming with incredible ideas that are slightly more complicated that yield such incredible results. My favorite example is this stunning Ombre Plum Blossoms project from the book that Rebecca and Patrick were kind enough to share with us today. It’s one of 75 projects in the book and would be perfect for setting a fall tabletop without having to clean up berries and pods after dinner. I can’t wait to tackle this for our office and I hope you guys will give this a spin if you need a fun craft project for the weekend.
Ombré Plum Blossoms from PAPER TO PETAL book
Materials • Single-ply crepe paper in white, lavender, purple, and royal purple: http://www.blumchen.com/craft_shop_crepe_paper_pg2.html, http://www.misterart.com/paper-boards/hobby-decorative-paper/craft-paper/tissue-paper/cindus-crepe-paper-folds.html • Florist crepe paper in orchid and plum: http://cartefini.myshopify.com/collections/all • Floral tape stem wrap in brown: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/stemwrap4.html • Found branch
Tools • Hot glue gun: http://shop.marthastewart.com/Martha-Stewart-Crafts-Glue-Gun-And/A/B00315X120.htm • Scissors
Template #167 http://marriedtocraft.com/templates/Templates-Ombre-Plum-Blossom.pdf
Tumblr media
Cut Crepe paper grain (the vertical ridges in the paper) runs with height; all dimensions are given as H × W. Cut sixty 1 3/4″ × 1 1/4″ (4.5cm × 3cm) strips from royal purple single-ply crepe. Cut sixty 1″ × 1 1/4″ (2.5cm × 3cm) strips from white single-ply crepe. Finely hand-cut fringe with the grain, approximately 1/16” (0.16cm) wide and 3/4 of the way down each strip of white crepe. Petal #167: Cut twelve 2″ × 6 1/2″ (5cm × 16.5cm) strips from each of the 5 purple-toned crepe papers; accordion-fold strips to fit template and cut continuous petals. To cut continuous petals: Align the base of the template with the bottom of the folded paper, clip the template to the paper, and cut around the shape leaving the base of the paper folds uncut. When using florist crepe, stretch the paper strips slightly before cutting the petals to remove some of the gathers and bulk.
Build Secure all layers with floral tape. 1. Make a Rolled Center by folding the purple 1 3/4″ × 1 1/4″ (4.5cm × 3cm) strip in half, against the grain, and roll it with the folded edge up, creating a visible coil, pinch tightly. 2. Gather and Wrap the white fringe around the Rolled Center. To Gather and Wrap: Start by placing the Rolled Center at the base of 1 end of a paper strip, supporting both between thumb and index finger. With your other hand, begin gathering the strip of paper against the Rolled Center while rotating the flower slowly as you pinch and wrap the paper around the Rolled Center until you reach the end of the strip. Hold it firmly together and tightly tape it using a 2” (5cm) length of floral tape at the base of the flower, as shown, to prevent slipping. How to use floral tape: Firmly but gently stretching the tape as you wrap is crucial to release the adhesive that makes the tape stick to itself. Place a short length of tape on the base of the prepared flower center and begin wrapping it around the base by spinning the stem (not moving the tape around the stem). With one hand, hold and slowly twist the base of your flower while applying pressure to the tape with your fingers. The opposite hand stretches the tape as you work. Continue to hold the petals in place and catch the base of the strip in the tape while spinning the stem, wrapping the tape tightly around the base of the flower a few times. Overlap the tape as you wrap, maintaining pressure with your fingers to prevent unraveling. Continue wrapping down at a slight diagonal, making sure to continually and gently pull the tape as you progress. Make a few fingernail scores at the end of each length of tape to help it adhere. 3. Gather and Wrap a continuous petal strip evenly around the completed center and secure tightly with an additional piece of floral tape. Fan out and Cup petals slightly. To Cup: Lightly grasp the center of each petal at its widest point between the thumbs and index fingers of both hands. Gently slide your thumbs and index fingers away from one another, gently pulling from the center out, coaxing the folds of the paper apart. 4. Snip off the end of the tape and paper, leaving 1/4″ (6mm) tape at the base, as shown, to create a short stem. Repeat all steps to complete 60 flowers.
Project Note To secure blossoms to the branch, dab a small amount of hot glue on the base of the flower stem, and place on a branch in a desired location. Hold until secure. To complete the ombré effect, secure the lightest flowers to the top of the branch, and work from light to dark as you progress down the branch. To make the buds, cut an additional strip of Petal #167 and snip off 2 petals. Gather and Wrap the 2 petals around a piece of white fringe and secure with tape. Snip off the end of the tape, leaving 1/4″ (6mm) of tape at the base and attach to the branch with hot glue. This project looks lovely in any color combination. Try making branches in these palette ideas: light to dark pink, yellow to green, pale blue to deep blue.

Alevis and Yazidis in Afrin threatened with extinction
Situation of Yazidis
Before the Turkish occupation, there were about 20,000 to 30,000 Yazidis living in Afrin. Now, there are only 1500 Yazidis left. Almost all Yazidi villages or villages with a Yazidi population in the region between Afrin and Mount Simon – such as Basufan, Baadi, Barad, Kimar, Iska, Shadere, Ghazzawiya, Burj Abdalo, and Ain Dara – were attacked by the Turkish air force at the beginning of 2018. The Yazidi village of Qestel Cindu had already been attacked by IS and other Islamist groups in 2013. Even back then, Turkey supported or tolerated Islamist fighters in Northern Syria. Many Yazidi olive groves and fruit trees were destroyed, and their livestock was killed. During the clashes between rivaling pro-Turkish Islamist groups in early June 2010, it had become known that the Arab-Sunni Hamzat militia was operating secret prisons for women in Afrin. Pictures of naked women being held there circulated in social media. Five Kurdish women, among them a Yazidi woman, were identified in videos and pictures.
Situation of Alevis
Before the Turkish occupation in March 2018, Afrin was inhabited by a tolerant Muslim population. Under the Turkish occupation regime, the situation changed fundamentally. Turkish President Erdogan uses religion – in this case Islam – as a weapon, inciting against anyone who rejects a strict interpretation of the Quran.
In March 2018, a new era in Afrin’s history began. Within two years, much of what the people had built up over centuries was destroyed. The Kurds are suffering under the Islamization and Turkification policy practiced by Turkey. For the few Alevis who stayed in Afrin, but also for the Yazidis, Erdogan's policy could lead to complete extermination.
Afrin's Alevis speak "Kurmanci" – the same Kurdish dialect that all Kurds in Afrin speak – and feel closely connected with other Kurds. Many Alevis identify themselves Muslims, but want to be recognized as an independent religion. The Alevis strictly reject the Islamic Sharia law. Also, other rituals of Islam play no role for them. While women are usually seen as inferior to the men in Islam, men and women are equal in Alevism. They pray together at the "Cem". Also, women are not required to wear a headscarf.
Even though Afrins Alevi community was only a small minority until the Turkish occupation, they played a major role in the political, cultural, and economic life of Afrin. One of the founders of the first "Kurdish Democratic Party" in Syria was the Alevi Muhammad Ali Khojah (1916 - 1965).
Many Alevis found refuge in Afrin when they were forced to flee from Turkey. Thus, one of the most famous leaders of the Kurdish freedom movement, the Alevi Dr. Nuri Dersimi (1892 - 1973), was able to find a new home in Afrin. Many of Dersimi's relatives were massacred by the Turkish military in 1937/38. Dersimi worked as a veterinarian in the northern Syrian metropolis of Aleppo for several years. According to his wish, he was buried in a cemetery not far from Afrin. His wife was buried there as well. Before his death, Dersimi made sure that a burial place was established there. The last time a member of the STP visited Dersimi's grave was in 2015. Dersimi's grave was desecrated following the Turkish occupation. The cemetery chapel was looted and partly destroyed.
Other Alevi cemeteries and sanctuaries were destroyed as well. The existence of many places with the addition "Dede" or "Baba" shows that many Alevis lived in Afrin. Gradually, the Alevi community was forced to convert to Islam in the Ottoman Empire. The recent Turkish occupation could mean an end to Alevism in Afrin – as the Turkish state is continuing its policy of Islamization inside and outside of Turkey with all its rigor. The disappearance of the Alevis, Yazidis, and Christians in Afrin will lead to an end to religious diversity there.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a condition involving hives and painful tissue swelling. Keeping useful items in a travel bag can help you manage the symptoms and find relief when you’re away from the comfort of your home. “Urticaria” is the medical term for hives — raised, itchy bumps or welts that appear on your skin. They can vary in size, shape, color, and cause. CSU involves nonallergic hives that appear suddenly, without an external trigger, and recur over a period of at least 6 weeks. Unlike other types of urticaria, CSU often features painful tissue swelling, known as angioedema, that typically develops around your eyes, mouth, hands, or feet. CSU can appear anywhere on your body, with hive outbreaks lasting around 24 hours, though the condition is recurring. Because its underlying causes aren’t clear, there’s often no way to predict just when an urticaria episode will develop. Keeping some useful items on hand when you leave home can help you find relief from symptoms no matter where you are. What’s it called when chronic urticaria has an environmental cause? When chronic hives have a known external or physical cause, such as insect bites, temperature, or touch, the condition is known as chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU) or physical urticaria. Both CSU and CIndU are types of chronic urticaria, though the term “chronic urticaria” is often used synonymously with “CSU.” What to pack in your CSU-friendly bag You CSU-friendly bag is there to help you find relief in a variety of situations that could contribute to the development or worsening of CSU symptoms. You can carry all your important items in one large bag and shift some to a smaller handbag to take with you while shopping, eating at restaurants, or attending social events. Here are some items to consider adding: Infographic by Whitney Williams Medical contact list You might have your doctor’s number readily accessible in your phone contacts, but there may be times when someone else has to contact your doctor for you. Having a physical list of important phone numbers in your CSU-friendly bag helps friends and family members quickly get in touch with your doctor if you’re unable to do it yourself. While CSU isn’t life threatening, there may be times when having a loved one reach out to your doctor is easier than communicating through your discomfort. Medications It’s important to have medications with you if you aren’t going to be home to take your regular dose at the usual time. Staying consistent with your medication schedule helps prevent lapses in symptom management due to uneven dosing. Having medications available may also help you during symptom flares. While most medications used to treat CSU are taken on a regular schedule (such as daily, weekly, or monthly), your doctor may provide alternative use instructions for when you experience a flare-up of hives. Second-generation antihistamines are one of the primary medications used to treat CSU. They work by binding to histamine H1 receptors in your body, thus blocking your natural histamine and its effects, such as itching, swelling, and redness. Doctors occasionally increase antihistamine doses to help manage symptoms. Common antihistamine medications that you might keep in your CSU-friendly bag include: cetirizine (Zyrtec) loratadine (Claritin) fexofenadine (Allegra) Other medications you might have on hand are omalizumab (Xolair) and cyclosporine. If you’ve just recently received a CSU diagnosis, you might also have a short-term supply of corticosteroids. If you’re unsure about using your medications at times when your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor first. Moisturizer Dry skin can compound itchiness from conditions such as CSU. By using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer formulated for sensitive skin, you can help keep your skin moisturized throughout the day, no matter where you are. Cooling pack Cold can help soothe itchiness and reduce swelling.
While it might not be practical to carry an ice pack with you, you can try instant cold compresses that you can activate when you need them. These products work through chemical reactions triggered by folding, twisting, or breaking the package. You can apply a cold compress to itchy areas for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. OTC soothing creams or ointments CSU is not an allergy. Even though many of its symptoms arise from histamine release, first-generation antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine) are often not as effective at relieving symptoms. Over-the-counter (OTC) anti-itch creams and ointments usually feature first-generation antihistamines or corticosteroids, so they may not be as effective at managing symptoms if you’re having a hive flare from CSU. For example, topical corticosteroids are not considered a standard therapy for CSU. Other OTC soothing creams and ointments, such as calamine lotion, may help. Calamine lotion is a soothing topical product made with zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It relieves itching and cools your skin through mechanisms that don’t involve histamine pathways. Products made with the following ingredients can also help manage itch through alternative mechanisms: colloidal oatmeal zinc oxide aloe vera capsaicin pramoxine hydrochloride menthol It may take some experimenting to learn which OTC product is the most effective at relieving your symptoms. Loose clothing Even though CSU isn’t caused by external triggers, certain environmental factors, such as tight clothing, can aggravate your symptoms. Tight clothes can create friction and heat and trap sweat against your skin. If you start to feel itchy while you’re out, changing into loose clothing can allow air to circulate across your skin and reduce friction. A personal fan Heat is another potential irritant when you’re already experiencing CSU symptoms. When you’re starting to feel overheated, using a personal fan may help. A variety of styles are available, including fans that sit around your neck and ones that can fit in the palm of your hand. Distraction items It’s not always possible to gain immediate relief from CSU symptoms. If you’re in a situation where your symptoms aren’t improving, distraction may help until you can contact your doctor. Distraction is a mental technique that involves shifting your focus away from something distressing, such as pain or itch, to help lessen its impact. Even though the sensations continue, distraction puts something else in the forefront of your mind. Possible distraction items include headphones for music, a book, games, puzzles, and a crafting item like a knitting set. When to see a doctor Many people successfully manage CSU with medications. Although estimates vary across studies, one 2022 research review suggests that up to 47% of people may experience remission (a period of time without symptoms) within 12 months. If your symptoms are worsening, are occurring more often even when you follow your current treatment plan, or do not improve with the help of rescue aids you keep in your CSU bag, it may be time to talk with your doctor. Takeaway CSU is a nonallergic condition involving recurrent hives and tissue swelling over a period of at least 6 weeks. Unlike other forms of urticaria, CSU doesn’t have an environmental or physical trigger. Most people can successfully manage CSU with regular medication, but keeping a bag of CSU-friendly supplies on hand can help you manage your symptoms and find relief when you’re away from home. ###⁣ What is ‌Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria? Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria ⁣(CSU) is ⁢a condition⁤ characterized by the‌ spontaneous occurrence ⁢of hives and swelling on the skin, lasting for six weeks or longer. The exact cause‍ of CSU is often unknown, making it challenging to determine‌ specific triggers. It can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as⁢ itching and redness. ### What are the symptoms of CSU?
The primary symptoms of CSU include itchy ‌hives or‍ welts on the ⁤skin, and angioedema, which is swelling under the skin. These symptoms can occur anywhere on the body ‍and may vary in ‌size and shape. They often appear and resolve spontaneously, often recurring without any identifiable trigger. ### How can I⁢ manage ⁢CSU⁢ symptoms on the go? For immediate relief, you⁤ can‍ take over-the-counter antihistamines to ‌reduce itching and ‍swelling. Wearing loose-fitting clothing ⁣can help minimize irritation, and applying cool compresses can soothe the skin. Stay calm and avoid scratching to prevent worsening of the symptoms. ### ⁤What should I include⁢ in a first-aid kit for CSU? A first-aid kit for CSU should include antihistamines, cool ⁤compresses or instant cold packs, calamine lotion, and any prescribed emergency medications. It’s also useful to⁢ have a⁤ list of known triggers as well as ⁣contact information ‍for ⁣healthcare providers. ### Are there specific triggers I should avoid? While‌ triggers can‌ vary‌ for each individual, common ones include stress, heat, certain foods, alcohol, and medications. It’s beneficial to keep a‌ diary to identify and ‌avoid potential triggers effectively. ### ⁤When should I seek ⁣medical attention? Seek medical attention if you experience severe swelling, especially ⁣in areas like the face or throat, which could indicate⁣ an anaphylactic reaction. Additionally, if the symptoms do⁤ not ⁤respond to‌ over-the-counter ‍medications or if they are severely impacting your daily life, consult a healthcare ‍professional. ### Can CSU affect my daily activities? Yes, CSU can affect daily activities due to symptoms like⁣ itching and swelling. However,⁣ with proper management, most people can‍ effectively‌ control the condition‍ and maintain a regular lifestyle. It's essential⁣ to follow an appropriate treatment plan ⁢and remain vigilant about potential triggers. ### What are the long-term treatments for CSU? Long-term treatments for CSU may include‍ prescription ⁢antihistamines, leukotriene receptor antagonists, or therapies like omalizumab.
