Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers - Tried So Hard (1967)
Pioneering early country rock. Can't believe I've never posted this, given how many Gene Clark songs I've posted. From Gene's first post-Byrds LP with the Gosdin Brothers, which was unfortunately released the same week as the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, Featuring some wonderful pickin' by Clarence White.
Never thought that we would end this way

Post-Byrds
1. Gene Clark: No Other (1974) 2. The Flying Burrito Brothers: Gilded Palace Of Sin (1969) 3. Gram Parsons: Grevious Angel (1974) 4. Gene Clark: Roadmaster (1973) 5. David Crosby: If I Could Remember My Name (1971) 6. Gene Clark: White Light (1971) 7. Gram Parsons: GP (1973) 8. Gene Clark with The Gosdin Brothers: S/T (1967) 9. Dillard & Clark: The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark (1968) 10.  The Flying Burrito Brothers: The Flying Burrito Bros (1971) 11.  Roger McGuinn: Back From Rio (1991) 12.  Roger McGuinn: Cardiff Rose (1976) 13.  Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: Deja Vu (1970) 14.  Crosby, Stills & Nash: S/T (1969) 15.  Chris Hillman: Morning Sky (1982) 16.  Gram Parsons And The Fallen Angels: Live 1973 (1982) 17.  Stephen Stills/Manassas: S/T (1972) 18.  Graham Nash & David Crosby: S/T (1972) 19.  Gene Clark: Two Sides To Every Story (1977) 20.  Graham Nash & David Crosby: Wind On The Water (1975) 21.  Gene Clark & Carla Olson: So Rebellious a Lover (1987) 22.  Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen: Bakersfield Bound (1996) 23.  The Flying Burrito Brothers: Burrito Deluxe (1970) 24.  Gram Parsons / The Flying Burrito Brothers: Sleepless Nights (1976) 25.  Dillard & Clark: Through The Morning, Through The Night (1969) 26.  McGuinn, Clark & Hillman: S/T (1979) 27.  Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: 4 Way Street (1971) 28.  Roger McGuinn: S/T (1973) 29.  Gene Parsons: Kindling (1973) 30.  Chris Hillmann: Slippin’ Away (1976)
Fleetwood Mac? The Beach Boys? Genesis?

Rewind: The Byrds: The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II (1972)
Released in 1972 and focused on the post-jangle, with Roger McGuinn-as-only-original-member band, The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II is a good primer for those who aren’t yet prepared to delve into the Notorious Byrd Brothers, the Ballad of Easy Rider, Byrdmaniax and (Untitled) among others.
Only “He Was a Friend of Mine” harkens to the original quintet and their sound. Volume II is instead a trip to the country (and western) on “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man” and the Gram Parsons era on Sweetheart of the Rodeo’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.”
Mostly, however, this Greatest Hits - a misnomer of the highest order - spotlights the McGuinn-Clarence White-Skip Battin (or John York)-and-Gene Parsons editions with forays into Christian rock on “Jesus is Just Alright,” psychedelic country with “Chestnut Mare” and such throwaway novelties as “I Wanna Grow up to Be a Politician” and “America's Great National Pastime.”
The album was originally conceived to bridge the gap between the final band’s split and the original group’s 1973 one-off, eponymous reunion album. That it exists at all speaks mostly to McGuinn’s belief in the Byrds but it’s best heard as a springboard to the group’s under-appreciated, late-period output, where better songs reside deep in the grooves.
Grade card: The Byrds: The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II - B-
