What the heck is a splatbook?

You might have heard this term in roleplaying game circles. You probably know it refers to a book of some sort, and that it isn't the main rulebook. But what on Earth is it, and where does it get its silly name? The answer may surprise you.

That's a splat. Or an asterisk if you want to be formal. But for our purposes we'll call it a splat. You might know that the humble splat is often used to indicate some sort of variable, right? Well that's how it entered our hobby.

Back in the day a company named White Wolf published a bunch of roleplaying games collectively called Storyteller games, most famous among them the World of Darkness games such as Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and Mage: The Ascension. These all had various types of characters you could be. Vampire had different Clans, Werewolf had Tribes, and Mage had Traditions. And they all received sourcebooks of their own. Vampire had Clanbooks, Werewolf had Tribebooks, and Mage had Traditionbooks.

As previously established, the splat is used as a variable. So all of these books were collectively known as *books, or splatbooks.

So in general splatbook means a sourcebook dedicated to one of the basic types your character can be. The Complete Fighter's Handbook for AD&D, for example, would be a classbook, and thus fall under the category of splatbook. "Splat" on its own has also come to be a generic term for whatever discrete character types a game might have, such as classes or playbooks.

Synthèse statistiques de lecture année 2023

Après un peu moins d'une année de reprise de lecture, je publie ici (majoritairement pour que je puisse les retrouver facilement) mes statistiques de lecture de l'année passée (2023).

Au global j'ai plutôt pas mal lu, même si le rythme est assez irrégulier et que le début a été un peu laborieux le temps de trouver mon style de prédilection, mais je laisse les stats parler d'elles-mêmes:

But my mum used to read from a Winnie The Pooh book when I was small and there was this poem in there about Piglet going on vacation and going to England and France and Africa and all... Like I did it last year and the other one did nothing and I had so go to all the meetings...

I just volunteered bc no other girl wanted to and my teacher rlly sad I could just do it again and I fitted well (very nice :((( )

bookculture - As a used bookstore, we get some interesting stuff. Today, someone donated a 25th reunion classbook for the Yale class of 1979. In it we found a photo of 9 year old @RealChalamet who “loves to do commercials.” Keep an eye on that kid, we’ve got a feeling he’s gonna be big!

Studyblr Quarantine Challenge — Week 4: Tips advice

Fri --- What is your biggest tip for organising your study space/study materials?

I guess you need to have your own method. After first term you usually know what is worth and what is not, in terms of notes, binders, laptops, stationery and so on. The thing is to work on your own way and stick to it. Every class may need to be approached in different manner, but try to also have some overall points (e.g. I put all my notes in appropriate binders---there are only few classes for which I used notebooks and not sheet paper---but I arranged literature notes a bit differently than language or theoretical stuff bc I worked differently on that matter). (see this post about notebook vs binder by @lovelybluepanda)

For space & materials: every thing needs to have its own place, preferably not on the surface of your desk (it’ll soon get cluttered regardless) but in drawers or on shelves. I’ve got individual shelves for all my notes (past/present that I don’t use), my classbooks, and for all the books I need to read with extra space for those that I’ve left behind. But my current notes (say, three weeks) have their place directly on my desk, in a thin binder I store all of them in.

Oh, and, when planning your method, remember you won’t have much time or readiness to follow everything in a fe months’ time, so try to keep it simple enough. (I’ve long lost hope of writing down notes from past lectures.)
