An Autumnal Classic

Welcome to my first blog post! Thank you for taking the time to check out my page. I plan on using this space to expand into more detail on my Instagram posts. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need anyone clogging up that feed with lengthy passages!

My heart lies within the realm of product reviews and breaking outside the box. I am constantly pouring over reviews of makeup and skincare, and have decided to dip my own toes into the blogging water. I hope to provide a unique lens on both popular and lesser-known beauty products and all of the potential they have. Without further ado, let’s get into a review of my favorite eye shadow palette of all time.

       THE MODERN RENAISSANCE PALETTE

-The palette so nice, I bought it twice (bonus points if you catch that reference)-

The Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette by Anastasia Beverly Hills(will be referred to as ‘ABH’ for the remainder of this review) has become nothing short of a cult classic in the beauty community. Launched in the summer of 2016, it completely took over social media feeds and review sites. Makeup artists and enthusiasts alike were professing their obsession with it, and you’d have been hard-pressed to find it in stock at any ABH retailer. While the mania has died down a bit, this palette is still heavily used and adored by makeup lovers. 

I myself have hit pan on my favorite colors, so I did something I never thought I’d do: I REPURCHASED IT. Who does that?! Who repurchases an eye shadow palette? That’s never been a thing, at least not for me, so this just goes to show how wonderful this palette truly is.

Housed in ABH’s signature velvet packaging, this one in particular a delicate mauve, are 14 shades of warm-toned, autumnal deliciousness waiting to be played with. When I look at this palette, an instant variety of looks come to mind. Berry-pinky halo eyes to pair with the resurgence of space buns; rusty orange and brick red hues to mimic falling into a pile of fall leaves; browns with the perfect ratio of neutrality and warmth for a messy, grunge-inspired look; and many shades to be used for a light wash of color when you’re wanting a pared-down look.

I really have nothing negative to say about this palette...I love it that much! However, here are some tips I’ve come up with after reading countless reviews and using it on a regular basis:

1. Do your eye makeup before your base. It will save a lot of frustration. There is quite a bit of fallout with this palette, but I don’t find it to be over-the-top. Fallout has become somewhat of a measure of quality in the makeup community in recent years, and I don’t quite understand that. When you’re working with highly pigmented eye shadows, fallout is almost always inevitable. In my opinion, if I experience fallout, I’m more confident that I’m going to get the color payoff that I’m looking for. So, eyes first-wipe away the fallout-paint your face. Easy peasy. Anyone else feel the same about the fallout barometer?

2. Another note on the high pigmentation of this palette. It is wholly unnecessary to dig your brush into the pans. A featherlight tap followed by shaking off the excess shadow is the way to go. This will help avoid extra fallout and crumbling of the shadows, not to mention help them blend out more easily. If I see one more person swirl their brush into the pans with brute force and then whine about the above issues...

3.This last tip is more so going to depend on the individual user. I find that if I set my eyes with powder after an eye primer, the shadows in this palette don’t blend as well and end up looking a bit patchy and dry. I’ve had much better color payoff and a seamless blend when I don’t set the eye primer. I honestly adapt this technique based on the palette I’m using-some work better with a set primer, and vice versa. Experiment and see what works best for you.

That’s a wrap on my thoughts of the ABH Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette! I hope it was helpful and that it inspires those wary of color to play a little-after all, this palette has a good mix of neutral shades to fall back on if the berry and red shades make you nervous. I really think any makeup lover can find a use for this palette. See you all next time!
