Story:
Their lives were dysfunctional before they were even born.
Their mother, Clearbrook, witnessed their father meeting with another she-cat. Upset and angry, she avoided him for some time, but never said why. While hunting alone to get away from him in camp, she met a loner. A tom. And the thought of payback crept into her.
The pregnancy wasn't planned. As soon as Clearbrook found out, she spent more time with their father, at least to make him think that they could be his.
Their father, Fringebranch, had continued to meet with the she-cat prior to this revelation. She herself had gotten pregnant. Fringebranch had planned to take her and the kits to the Clan but not say who they were to him.
But then she died in child-birth. Fringebranch was distraught, of course. He buried her to protect her from predators, but had no time to sit vigil, he had to get the kit to the nursery.
His story had remained the same. He had no connection to the kit or his mother. He found them when it was too late.
And there was only one queen able to nurse.
They were not brothers, not technically. Not in the ways that their parents told them. Because truthfully, they both knew.
Because Ripplekit didn't look at all like Fringebranch.
And Wolfkit looked too much like him.
But the couple never talked about it. They never said anything about the other's betrayal, only left things in the air, tense with the knowledge they both held about their own and their mate's actions.
Even as kits, the brothers could feel something strange, and as they grew it became clear that their parents played favourites.
Fringebranch favoured Wolfkit because he knew Ripplekit was the result of his mate's affair. Any mistake Wolfkit made was a forgivable learning opportunity. Any mistake Ripplekit made, however, was because he was foolish and should know better.
Clearbrook favoured Ripplekit for the same reason. Whatever Ripplekit asked for, she was quick to give him. Wolfkit was sternly told to learn patience and that not everyone always gets what they want.
But the kits didn't know why.
They loved each other dearly, and it became habit for them to play away from their parents. They both hated seeing the other upset, so it became habit to lie.
Around Fringebranch, Wolfkit would take the fall for every mistake Ripplekit made.
Whenever Wolfkit wanted something, Ripplekit would ask Clearbrook and pretend it was for him.
It didn't always work out. Sometimes Fringebranch saw Ripplekit play too rough or laugh too loud or lead his brother into the leader's den, and he would snap at him for 'forcing his brother to take the fall.' And when Clearbook got Ripplekit extra-soft moss or his favourite prey from the pile and saw Wolfkit using it instead, she would yank it out of his paws and scold him for stealing, even when Ripplekit insisted that he allowed it.
Ripplekit and Wolfkit did whatever they could to stay out of the nursery for as long as possible. When Wolfkit tripped and bruised his leg, they found out that needing to stay in the medicine den was a perfect reason.
While their parents did visit them often, there was something about another adult cat being around that kept their parents in check.
Wolfkit and Ripplekit would pretend to be hurt at first, but the medicine cat caught on.
So they started to really hurt themselves.
They would climb the pines and 'fall' off.
They would 'accidently' step on a thorn.
Clumsy kits too adventurous for their own good was what everyone thought.
While in the medicine den, they asked many questions about the herbs and what they did. The medicine cat was happy to answer, but when Wolfkit asked about the red berries, he went silent for a long moment before telling him that it was a very special herb that was only to be used in very special occasions, to stop someone's suffering and make them go to a pleasant place forever.
Wolfkit was intrigued. Days later, when he saw the elder, Beepuddle, moaning in pain in her own nest, he wanted to help her.
She was too out of it to notice that it was a kit giving her the herbs.
Neither brother saw the vigil or her body. They only knew that she was suffering, they gave her the berries, and now she was gone. Where? 'In a better place' was what they were told.
Then Wolfkit fell sick. It didn't get better, only worse. He coughed with every intake of breath, couldn't keep down food, had constant chills.
Ripplekit didn't want him to suffer.
But if he gave his brother the red berries, would Ripplekit be alone? He didn't want to risk that. Their parents' fights had become more frequent and so loud...and would Fringebranch hate him more once Wolfkit was gone?
There was only one solution.
Curled together, they shared their last meal, and awaited the better place.
But what met them instead was air that froze them to the bones and large, twisted trees that loomed over them.
Both doubted how good this place could be, but at least they were together.

Additional Information:
--'Adoptive brothers' technically fits them more, but it feels too complicated for even that.
--Both brothers hate anyone saying that they are anything less than full-blood brothers.
--I'll probably update their colours so that they don't match as much, since they weren't unrelated when I designed them.
--Adults names will be Wolfsmoke and Ripplepatch
--Both prefixes were suggested by @starfalcon555 and I took the other options they gave (smoke and patch) for their suffixes.

Rereading the Octopath Traveler LP, and like... were the writers oblivious to Alfyn and Zeph's romantic chemistry (hence the Mercedes post-game quest), or are they *very* much aware and had to no homo it (hence the Mercedes post-game quest)?
Maybe i'm too cynical, but it kinda feels like the second scenario to me (like. Can you really cram so much romantic framing in their scenes without being aware of how it comes off), but idk if it was getting cold feet or executive meddling or uh more malicious than that (strategic presentation of hints at lgbtq possibilities before shooting it down later)

alfyn vc: don't kick people into rivers therion, please.
Tumblr media
" If you'd seen how he followed he through Riverford, you'd kick him in a river too. " He'd arrived home to his affectionate apothecary, letting down the normally prickly exterior. It'd been too long since Therion started staying with Alfyn in Clearbrook, and everyone in the small village was well aware that he was just as soft as Alfyn was.
Case and point was the extended hug that he was getting, despite being admonished for mumbling about what he would absolutely do the man who'd followed him all the way here.

with all the talk of climates and how characters would adapt over on bean's blog, just IMAGINE how poorly cyrus would be doing just everywhere. the flatlands are temperate as hell so snow? absolutely not. deserts? hell no. high altitudes? my man is passing out. plus he looks like a twig and probably has a constitution modifier of -2 so that is NOT helping
he goes anywhere and the other travellers he's with have to lug him like a sack of potatoes
whether that be afyn, olberic, h'aanit, or gods forbid primrose (she has been dancing for years now, you cannot tell me she doesnt have muscle)
he makes up for it by absolutely blasting any enemies they encounter to high heaven (when/if he comes to, that is)

I know the changes made to apothecary's concoct from octopath traveler 1 to 2 -of having what the concoctions do start off as a mystery in 1, then in 2 it tells you right away what items will do- is most likely a quality of life improvement, but honestly it also really fits the characters.
Like, Alfyn is leaving his small hometown for the first time, sure he has experience as an apothecary there, but he was limited by what he could use for concoctions by what was around Clearbrook. Going out into the world means he's introduced to a lot more ingredients he can use in his concoctions that he hadn't known about before. So learning what the effects of concoctions do after they've been used in battle is like Alfyn learning more about his craft. Meanwhile Castti has been a traveling apothecary for ages, she has honed her profession so deep into her bones that she can forget everything else about herself, including her name, yet still know what her concoctions are capable of.
It's a moment where gameplay and story intersect to fit characters' background, even if it's not intentional, and I find it cool.

A B.C. man has been sentenced to nearly five years in jail after receiving his 21st conviction for impaired driving — which police believe to be the most in Canadian history. In a news release Friday, the Abbotsford Police Department said it responded to a report of a motorcycle accident in the 1800 block of Clearbrook Road on the evening of Aug. 15, 2022. The owner of the motorcycle was known to police for having a history of prohibited and impaired driving offences.

Actually, one more thing because I have a brand and I have a few more thoughts on Aelwyn:
She said in her letter that her apartment is in Clearbrook, which is a neighborhood that has three notable things in it that are relevant to Aelwyn:
The middle school she is presumably teaching at, which certainly as a lifelong person who hates commuting I can respect wanting to live near.
The burned out ruins of the Abernant family home, lovely.
Ostentatia Wallace's house.
Those latter two are totally fine I'm sure.
