cool features i think the brooklyn house should have so i'm making them canon

steam room that's like a few steps from the ground level. it's mostly underground. (it was alyssa's idea and she lobbied for it very much.)

underground pool. it's in like a cave. it's mostly dimly lit, and there's steps leading down to it from the steam room

herb garden on the roof (where freak's stable is). it's mostly for jaz' medicinal herbs, but there's also some herbs and spices generally used for cooking

there's also a few beehives on the roof! the beeswax gets a multitude of uses, mainly from cleo in the library (city bees actually usually do make the best honey when provided with homes and adequate water and stuff, because there's most biodiversity)

the three or four floors that line the sides of the great room are many a times just bedrooms, but as we've seen them change to accommodate sadie and carter (their favourite sweets and drinks, soundproofing, clothes, etc), i imagine that can be extended to like, when they need a place to smash to bits when training, they open the door of an unoccupied room, and a rage room is there. when they need a planetarium, it's there.

haiiiiiii tkc fans! i've made ocs for the brooklyn house kids (there's stated to be about twenty trainees), send me a number between 1 and 22 and i'll tell you about my brooklyn house ocs!

brooklyn house trainees misc. headcanons

singlehandedly forcing the kane chronicles fandom to life less gooo

sean ryan (path of tefnut - goddess of rain and moisture) and alyssa (path of geb - god of the earth) like to goof around together

alyssa is the reason there's a steam room and sauna on the ground floor of the brooklyn house

cleo from rio (path of thoth - god of knowledge) is a tumblr girlie (gods bless her) and owns a t-shirt with neil banging out the tunes

when she finds out about the greco-roman demigods, she routinely sends postcards to camp jupiter on the ides of march with "sorry for your loss" or "i heard they killed your guy again"

julian (path of horus - god of war) spends his spare time programming and doing math competitions

he has tried to combine some of the magic words taught to him to help him with electronics. his efforts have not been successful just yet

cleo likes to duat travel to other nomes' libraries and read up on things that the 21st nome just doesn't offer. she brings shabti in her bag so that they can copy documents she really likes

shelby of the ankle biters likes to draw, and her art sometimes comes to life. after rachel starts visiting her neighbours, shelby finds out she paints, and starts to really look up to her

for his birthday, the rest of the nome gift felix a yearly sponsorship to one of the penguins in their nearest zoo

along freak's stable, the roof has a little greenhouse, mostly for jaz' and paul's (path of nepit - goddess of agriculture) medicinal herbs

rachel and alyssa like to learn the other's art form from each other - alyssa gives rachel tips on how to make her pottery stable, and rachel teaches alyssa how different colours work together, and what's the best way to combine them

zariya (path of shu) really decided to follow the wind god, because she plays ultimate frisbee competitively. (also because she's watched atla and could not pass up an opportunity to airbend)

zariya and julian are good buddies, zariya being one of the few people to consistently refer to him exclusively as "jules" and dragging him along to ultimate frisbee games.

the two share scientific interests, julian's math and theoretical informatics, zariya's biophysics. they'll at times discuss these, but have no illusion - it's a thing of passion and great fun for both of them. also a bit of a competition

sage, who's only joined very near the final battle against apophis, uses they/them, and follows khonsu. they're pretty inexpressive and soft-spoken. they're interested in not just the moon, but also the time-controlling aspect of khonsu's magic. (they might have gotten stuck in a time loop a few times)

they're a bit of a mysterious figure, and hardly ever speak to anyone. contrary to popular belief, this isn't because they feel any animosity, they just don't really know what to say, so they prefer to keep to themself.

when older, shelby of the ankle biters decides to follow the path of bes. she's grown up with all incredibly fun people, and besides being the dwarf god, bes is also one of the art gods. freedom of self-expression and all that. shelby's never been afraid of expressing herself.

teagan (path of bast), who joined the crew sometime between the throne of fire and the serpent's shadow, is actually a trans girl! she's the one who catalyzes zia's own realization that he's trans as well. while the goddess is in the brooklyn house, the two love to hang out, bast directly teaching her some of her tricks on living the best life (the catgirl life)

were her parents ever magicians?

i don't think so. i think that if she does have the blood of the pharaohs, it's probably been dormant for some time.

i think her parents have generally a very free style of parenting. assuming that giving zariya lots of free time to roam and express herself and do whatever she wants is the best way to do things. i think that's also why they let her go to the brooklyn house fairly easily; there's a certain point where freedom becomes carelessness. make no mistake – they still love her lots! they just think that she seemed confident enough, and that it's fine.

did she have any rivalries within the nome?

i think she's kinda unaware of people around her enough to not realize that her approach to the world (which is kinda free-spirited) may not sit with some people. and that people express things differently. i think she's just very focused on the here and now and her immediate surroundings, and that's usually people she likes. like, she doesn't ever have trouble sleeping at night.

i do think there are some people that... don't share her sentiments in one way or another, like cleo for example – she's got very deep rooted morals and cares lots for doing the right thing. but i also think cleo isn't the type of person to get into confrontations. i think she just kinda removes herself from zariya's presence when she doesn't like listening to the conversation. the nome (and it's library) are big, anyway.

otherwise, i think zariya's really a very inoffensive person. like she'll joke around and tease sometimes, but she's generally really trying to get along with people. i think she's the type of person to consider the best way of people "getting along" a middle ground compromise, no matter which side has which stances (and how fair or logical they are). which. yeah i get how that can sit badly with some people.

i've got these two siblings, the hicks kids, and bambi, the younger one, is very protective of her older sibling, alec, and like, threatens to pull a knife at anyone who speaks to them. so like, technically, with how friendly and approachable zariya is, it's pretty likely that bambi threatened to punch her. but that's like. that's just bambi. that has nothing to do with "your first priority should always be ultimate frisbee" girl.

why did she pick shu?

wind god = frisbee advantage :D +she wanted to be like aang

details i didn't mention

pretty fidgety. she carries a fidget cube around in her pocket and chews on the strings in her hoodies. noodle (another oc, haiiii) taught her how to weave friendship bracelets, so now she does that a lot.

despite singing and jamming being a popular pastime in the brooklyn house, zariya doesn't have very much musical prowess. she's not got much rhythm.

she does ultimate frisbee on like a pretty big level! she has practice like every day and goes to games most weekends! (her teachers both in school and in the house frown upon this, bc it means she doesn't spend much time doing homework or training her spells)

never wakes up at a normal hour. it's either 5:50 bc she's got training before school, or at like 11 bc she's sleeping in (whether intentionally or not depends)

loves hot showers. comes out like a lobster and it's the best thing ever. (then spends thirty minutes on her phone in a towel looking at tiktoks)

memes she finds funny are like. 1:03 youtube video titled "alien beaver noises" and it's a bunch of weird sounds. the picture is a crunchy jpeg of a beaver coloured green. and it's not even funny to her in like a brainrot, chronically online way (bc she's not. she doesn't have time for that). it's more like. doesn't think about it. alien beaver.

Zariya Tashi, Trainee of the Brooklyn House, Path of Shu

Style/appearance staples:

gold-rimmed glasses that connect twice - once the bridge of the nose, and once a bit higher

quite a . bulbous nose

black gauges in her ears

dimples!

a scar on her right cheek

mostly wears her hair in twists (like in the first and last picrew) and golden little embellishments on them

really quite muscular. like, not clarisse-style, but definitely has visible muscles

usually at least two necklaces. a small chain necklace, and an amulet Walt made her on her first day in the house

loose, sporty t-shirts, often times with some sort of logo on them

nearly always in big sporty shorts, you know it's really cold outside when she pulls out the sweatpants

her clothing is mostly in white, yellow, black, and the occasional grey. the rest are very brightly coloured t-shirts won at like sports events or whatever

Zariya joined the 21st Nome close to the beginning of the second book. She hails from Soda Springs, Idaho. She's a very easy-going kid, goes with the flow, very affable and good at talking to people. Make no mistake, though, she's very energetic, loves doing stuff.

(Also I literally don't know how many people know of frisbee outside of my social circle, so just to be sure, it's the one with two teams where they toss a disc around and try to get it to either of the furthest sides of the field. Lots of running and abrupt changes in who's offending and defending. I'm sure we're all sports people here.)

Zariya heard of the Brooklyn House through a friend of hers reading the first TKC book (they're canonically published in-universe lol), and she just thought, alright, cool, that's what I'm gonna do. Her parents are also just kinda chill (wonder where she got it from 🤔), told her "alright sweetie, call us often" and took her there.

Very quickly, she took to following the path of Shu, god of the wind. She grew up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, and wanted to be like Aang 😁 Also, not so subtly, she wanted to gain an advantage in frisbee.

She's down for any fun, but it also makes her a bit unruly and what I can only describe as, at times, lacking principles. She won't do some things that are, like, obviously (read: have been framed thoroughly as such) bad, like being cruel to people or disobeying authority. But she also won't, like, actively look to help others; she doesn't view complacence as an action of itself. That's to say, she's just very chill, to the point of it being infuriating to some of the other inhabitants.

In academics, she's interested in biophysics (physics applied to biology, figuring out how organisms work from a physics-y point of view). Not to a degree that she'd go out of her way to read about it and reject hanging out with her friends (at least, not often), but when she has the time or the occasional urge to study something, she'll dig into it. It's actually something that a part of her friendship with Julian Teague (path of Horus), another one of the trainees. His interest lies in mostly computer architecture, and bits of maths and programming (he's like one of those guys who goes to programming competitions). They like to passionately discuss whatever new thing they're reading up at the moment and how it works and why it's cool lol. Nerding out together 🫶

Zariya and Julian (whom she calls "Jules" exclusively) have a nice friendship, where she's the more outgoing one, and he's a bit more introverted, yet they're good friends, and she makes him come out of his shell a bit more. Probably made him tag along to some of her frisbee tournaments a few times.

When not working out or studying the human body, Zariya likes a good board game! She gets surprisingly strategic about them, but in a very not-noticeable way. She'll look she's just being goofy like normal, but when you ask her about something she did, she'll say a move that's actually pretty layered and clever like it's nothing.

Oh, playing charades (but this rly advanced style with symbols for stuff like "animal", "past tense" or "material") is also a popular pasttime in the Great Room, and Zariya is almost always present for it, if not the initiator.

She's genuinely such a sweetie when it comes to teaching people anything. She just loves to share things that she likes with people, and doesn't get angry at all if they don't get it. Like, it doesn't even occur to her. She's just looking for a better way to explain it, a different angle from which to approach things. It's visible in frisbee when she taught pretty much all the trainees how to play, and in her biophysics interests, when someone asks her about how something works (or she just goes on a tangent unprompted).

She just likes being around people! She makes jokes and listens to people well, even if she is a bit naive and doesn't always know the best thing to say. She's friendly and lots of the other trainees consider her a friend.
