I see people talking about the Brave browser in the whole Firefox vs chrome debate, and while people rightly point out that it's just chromium and that they do shady cryptocurrency shit, I never see anyone point out that Brave's founder and CEO is Brandan Eich.

He founded Brave after massive protests against him becoming CEO of Mozilla, resigning after 11 days. And the reason for those protests? He donated a lot of money to the Prop 8 campaign to ban gay marriage.

We all know the Sports King. Some of us love him. A lot of us hate him. Many of us love to hate him.

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself... What if I could hit him with hammers, with just a click of my mouse?

This is why I endeavored to shimeji-fy the Sports Guy. And now, with the power of electronics and mad science, I have succeeded.

If you're unfamiliar with shimejis, they are little desktop pets that roam around your screen and offer a bit of interactivity. So you can drag him around, play mouse-chasie, or just watch him do his own thing!

As a forewarning, this shimeji is a "mischevious" type shimeji, which means he can summon forth Sports King clones to infest your screen, or mess with your minimised windows. But not to worry, because a simple right click on either the King himself, or his icon in the app tray, and you'll be able to reduce the Sports King population to one, or restore your meddled-with windows.

Day Three - Nostalgia

“You may open your eyes now, Duchess.”

The words came from Obi-Wan, who’d been leading Satine by the hand through a bustling lower level of Coruscant. At Obi-Wan’s urging, she’d had her eyes closed ever since since they’d dismounted his speeder bike, impatient to see the “surprise” he had promised her before the Coronet took her back to Mandalore. And despite the temptation, she hadn’t peeked—not even when she’d nearly tripped over a dent in the ferrocrete, held upright only Obi-Wan’s grasp on her waist. So when she opened her eyes to take in a vibrantly colored diner—and to see a large, four-armed Besalisk grinning broadly at her—her surprise and delight were truly genuine.

“Dex!” Satine exclaimed, rushing forward to give him a hug.

Dex’s four arms reciprocated with a firm, but not crushing, embrace. “It does this old Besalisk’s heart good to see ya’, Sat’ika. I’ve been dancing with joy here since your Ben told me you were on Coruscant, you know!”

She turned just in time to catch Obi-Wan flush slightly at Dex’s use of their private pet name. “I remembered how well you two got along, when Dex was ferrying us between planets during the war, and I thought you might wish to catch up.”

Dex’s arms released and rested on his large belly as he let out a hearty laugh. “Get along is one word for it, eh! I’ve been hopin’ all these years you two would come to your damned senses and settle down someplace together.”

Now it was Satine’s turn to flush as a few of the diners looked up from their meals. Given that she wasn’t in her regalia and was dressed rather simply in a plain blue blouse and skirt, she was unlikely to be recognized. But the sudden attention from random onlookers made her uneasy. “Perhaps we should sit for a moment, get something to drink.”

Seeming to realized that he’d put her on the spot, his mirth faded a bit. “Of course, Sat’ika. Sorry to be so blunt with you right off the start. We can all have us a booth and get some nice, cool Java Juice.”

As she and Obi-Wan moved to seat themselves in the booth Dex had indicated, Satine gave the Besalisk a smile. “You remembered?”

“Of course I remembered! Your Ben here has been a stranger to Coruscant of late, what with those damned Clone Wars and all, but he still stops by every week he’s here for my Java Juice. He’d well deny it, but I know he does it because a particular Duchess was always partial to it.”

Obi-Wan regarded Dex with a slight frown as the larger man eased himself into the booth seat across from them. “That’s the second time now you’ve used that name. I’d forgotten that you were…privy to that information.”

Dex showed them a wide, toothy grin. “Your old master and I played fools, but anyone who’d have spent five minutes watching you two would’a known you were smitten for each other.”

“We tried to keep things discrete,” Satine pointed out before Obi-Wan could argue, hoping her flush this time around wasn’t too apparent.

“Well, you see, the word there is ‘tried,’” Dex said, scratching at his stubble. “But I don’t think what you two have can be hidden for long, Sat’ika.”

Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow in what she knew had to be attempt—and not a very successful one, not to someone who knew him as well as she did—to appear nonchalant. “Have?”

“Yes, ‘have,’ old friend. Anyone watchin’ you two now can see there’s a spark between ya’ brighter than the suns of Jakku.”

Satine let his words settle in as a server droid set down their drinks and a plate of something warm and savory-smelling. She risked a glance at Obi-Wan, keen to gage his reaction, only to find that he was also peering at her. Their shared gaze didn’t last long—perhaps a few seconds, nothing more—but in that time she could see in his eyes the same question echoing in her mind.

Is he right?

Just a few days before, Satine had disclosed as much to Obi-Wan, let him know she’d still loved him despite all their years apart. And he’d let her know, too, in his own way, that he’d once felt the same. But now? She knew in her heart she’d love him until her dying day, but the only hint that he shared her sentiment was that she saw something shift in him when he looked at her, or when their hands accidentally brushed while reaching for their cups.

Dex, perhaps detecting the shift in her mood, lifted his cup of Jawa Juice and held it out in a toast, his wide smile returning. “To you two crazy kids! Here’s hopin’ you’ll always have each other.”

Obi-Wan and Satine shared another glance as they returned the toast. Obi-Wan didn’t say anything, just looked at her with the same look he’d given her on the Coronet, after Merrick had been killed and before they’d parted to attend to their separate duties. The same look he’d worn when they’d said farewell on Mandalore, all those years ago.

The look that said he wanted to tell her something, but couldn’t.

As they all tucked into their drinks and food, laughing and reminiscing about old times, Satine hoped that someday, somehow, he finally would tell her.

Tierlist part 4: Python

Python is an interesting case. On one hand i absolutely hate it. The dynamic type system is not fun to work with especially when you accidentally have created a reference to an array instead of cloning it. I have never gotten round to completely understanding how class work cause it just seems like a mess. On the other hand it's a great toy. There is just a bunch of syntax like for else and the most important list comprehension that makes it an ideal playground for the writing the most cursed code. It's a good entry to code golfing because of that. So that leaves the question of where to put it. So uhmmm, let me just find the knife and do a little dissecting. There. Perfect. A tier as a toy. D tier as a language to write actual projects in.

I got the idea for this drawing last year of my friend's PC (also the one who wrote the quote) for their birthday, but I didn't have the time to draw it then. One year later, and here we are again! Eloise Campbell, the android (reskinned D&D4e Shardmind) starts as a clone of her selfish creator, breaks her programming to find her own identity, and ends the campaign as Steora with a new body (the reflection in the window).

In GAWE, the D&D4e westmarches my friend and I were in, my PC Hrodwyn made Steora's little star clip. We also joked about how Steora and Hrodwyn's brother, Merethel, would be a very cute/fitting couple. And then we joked so hard to the point that Steora got thrown into Helvetia, the Delta Green campaign, to make the ship possible because Hrodwyn's family also got thrown into LMAO

Adapt

This weekend another popular coffee shop in the DC area is closing for good - Radici by Eastern Market. Now, I liked it because unlike Port City Java it wasn't a half-assed Starbucks clone, and it was in my opinion better than Peregrine Espresso.

However, I get down to Eastern Market only a few times each year, and it has been long-established that even my coffee habits cannot keep a coffee shop in business.

What I note is, it's closing after being in business for ten years, almost on the dot. And I can think of, offhand, over a dozen small businesses which closed right at the ten year mark.

My suspicion is that when a business closes tells you a lot about why. In my experience, ten years translates to "This is successful enough to stay in business but not enough to hire someone else to run the place and I really miss having weekends and sleep."

Which, you know, legit. It's sad to see a place like that go, but running a business is tough.

Moreover, I think that the post-pandemic world has made it really difficult to run a small business downtown. So many business models relied on office workers coming in during the week, and it has become apparent that we don't need people sitting in office buildings for 40 hours a week to get the work done. Unfortunately, current commercial rent does not reflect that, and I keep seeing businesses close but the space they occupied sitting vacant for months or even years.

I believe that people want to go out, they want to see people and do things. But the current commercial models are wrong, and the people with money would rather let their properties rot than lower rents or consider new ideas.

Experience with rust thus far

Rust is great! I've been working with it off and on for around a year and change now, and I have no complaints.

It's a very... sane language. At no point have I looked at a language feature and thought "wow that's a hack", which has been my experience with almost every other imperative language to that point. (Java, C, C#, JavaScript, Python, etc.) There are a few features I think it's currently lacking, but most of them are present in the nightly branch. (I'm a big fan of let_chains and const_fn_floating_point_arithmetic, among others.)

Library support via Cargo is great, no complaints, and I love how easy doc comments are to write, it makes for an almost Elisp level of good documentation.

I've written a few non-trivial applications, like a breakout clone and a flappy bird-esque thing, and while I ditched good practices for the sake of implementation efficiency (both projects were more about learning libraries than the final product) Rust's nature makes it really easy to refactor from copy-paste spaghetti hell into clean, encapsulated, maintainable code.

I also love how anal-retentive the compiler is. Again, Rust is a very sane language. I do not want to be writing Raku, where there are a thousand "basically correct" ways to do the same thing. I want constraints, and I want them strict. I want to be able to express to the compiler not just what I want a piece of code to do, but what I don't want it to do as well. We're all human! We're gonna mess up! I want it to be easy to tell that I've messed up! (Looking at you, python, with your assignment equals declaration bullshit. Typoing a variable name should not be permitted.)

Overall it's just great. When it comes to writing applications I'd pick no other language. (Except maybe D. Too bad nobody supports D...)

Cross and the other Ink were much closer to the camera and Ink looked and acted more like DS, and Cross...tbh i don't remember. he seemed pretty normal. Maybe he wasn't though.

I never actually saw any of the castle except for that one room. it was just 'yeah they're in an ice castle. and frozen

Other stuff:

It was going to be cryosleep and not petrification, bc that’s what it was in the dream, but there is literally no reason to do that to them. Freezing Orion and Corvus isn’t going to made them stronger it’s just going to make them sopping wet and really dumb for the first hour after they thaw out

Corvus looks terrified as a statue :))

Glaze doesn’t respond to her name in donut shops because she just automatically assumes it’s someone ordering a glazed donut instead of someone calling her name.

Do you know how long it took me to push Corvus and Glaze together. Anyways Corv’s pet name for Glaze is Donut and Corv is the the reason Glaze is now actually putting effort into deal with The Maelstrom. 

There were actually quite a few survivors from JR. There was even enough to keep it going (even if just to say we survived. There’s not many of us but we’re still here and by god we’re doing our best), but they were scattered and the few others Ink and Finch found had already resigned themselves to trying to make a new life for themselves in this apocalyptic hellscape that the MV has become. 

“Alright you little shits it’s scavenger hunt time. Whoever finds the most stuff on the list gets a candy bar” - exhausted Ink at 11pm having to go on an emergency grocery run because 4-year-old Temp and Glaze eat way more than she thought they would and she is still trying to figure out how much food she needs for the three of them. No, they can’t read yet; their lists are in pictographs. Reason #99 why she should not be responsible for kids. She really needs another adult. 

Ink almost didn’t bother enrolling Temp and Glaze in a school bc it seemed like a lot of headache-inducing paperwork, but the lure of ‘time to herself without two hyperactive children’ was too strong. 

Xena and Java didn’t go to a proper school like the other clones, tho. Cross and Error just weren’t sure they could get Xena and Java to school. They did their best to homeschool them instead. Finch and Hacker gave them some basic shit to teach the kids too, because Finch was pretty sure they’d forget some actually important stuff. He was right btw. Xena and Java are lucky they know as much math as they do. They’re also lucky Cross and Error were willing to ask for help teaching them how to read and stuff because dear god

Cross really can’t blame Xena for not wanting to do this, but Xena hasn’t turned in her resignation form yet, which is the only reason Cross is pushing her to work on her shit. Xena does not realize this yet. Glaze is also seeing this and is very sure the older ones are forcing them to do this, which is why she hasn’t said anything. 

All the older ones kinda decide to start training the kids to fight at different points. Finch and Hacker took the longest to. As much as Finch wants Wren to be able to at least defend themself, he really doesn’t think young kids need to learn to fight. 

Oddly enough Ink took the second longest. She wasn’t too worried about it being appropriate or whatever to teach kids of a certain age to fight, her logic was just “I have very little patience. Kids test my patience more than most things. Kids are also very stupid. I should wait until they’re less likely to get themselves killed trying to learn how to hold a stick with a sharp pointy end.” She did teach them how to use their other magic, though. 

Cross and Error started teaching Xena and Java about their magic pretty early on. Their logic was ‘if they know how to control it young, there won’t be problems with runaway magic. Just problems figuring out where the cookie jar went and catching kids swinging from the ceiling’. They still wait for them to be at least double digits old before starting combat training. And they didn’t use real weapons.

All of the clones have the same birthday. 

Oddly enough, Aster actually wanting to help encouraged the others a lot. ‘You mean you WANT to be involved in this thing we don’t feel we have a choice in??? …maybe it won’t be that bad.’

None of the clones realized Corvus and Orion were going to wake up in their lifetimes. Especially not this soon holy shit. 

Had Corvus and Orion been more prepared, that one fight may not have gone as badly as it did. As it was they were young and inexperienced and had even less idea what they were doing than the others. They’re lucky they didn’t die. Hell they’re lucky it was only about 20 years and not 100. Or 500. 

Corvus and Orion do have a destiny bond. Had being turned to stone killed Orion, Corvus would not have lasted even a second longer in that first big fight with the Maelstrom. 

Also Corvus and Orion are both right about becoming radiants/corrupts. It would make it much easier for them to deal with the Maelstrom, but it would also make them much more vulnerable. 

Worst Ending Corvus & Orion: 

Corvus’ body is now made entirely of corruption and she can turn into a ✨goo puddle✨like OG Nightmare. Her body is very, very endothermic. Worst ice hands ever

Orion on the other hand is very EXOthermic and very very hot so like. Be careful

Orion is an unfortunate combination of Dream’s holier-than-thou-ness and some pretty awful manipulative tendencies. Obviously she is in the right, smh. But if she needs to do a little persuading, she’s not above using tricks and lies. She fights dirty, don’t let her talk of honor and righteousness fool you

Corvus is, surprisingly, rather honest most of the time, which doesn’t help Glaze when Corv offers to let her join her. Still, the corruption in her wants only one thing, and she will stoop as low as she needs to achieve it. 

Poor, poor Glaze. She promised herself she’d protect Corvus, and now she has to help kill her.

The pair of them are mere shadows of their former selves.
