Die unedlen Metalle haben im Ver lauf von Jahrmillionen mit dem Luftsauerstoff reagiert und dabei Metalloxide gebildet: Metall Sauerstoff Metalloxid Eisen Sauerstoff Eisenoxid Die Reaktion mit Sauerstoff (lat. oxyge nium) wird als Oxidation bezeichnet. Alle Metalloxide sind Feststoffe, viele sind farbige Substanzen (Abb. 5, 6). Schon in der Steinzeit haben die Menschen Farben für Höhlenmalereien verwendet oder um sich selbst zu schmücken. Dazu haben sie vermutlich farbige Erde mit Tierfett ver mischt. Farbig ist eine Erde dann, wenn sie besonders viel eines bestimmten Metalloxids enthält. Meistens sind dies verwitterte Erz- lagerstätten. Ocker beispielsweise wird heute noch an einigen Stellen in Italien als gelb braune Erde gewonnen. Die Ockererde be- steht zu einem erheblichen Teil aus Eisen oxid, das mit Tonmineralen vermischt ist Eisenoxid ist braun, aber wegen der beigemengten Tonminerale kann die Erde gelbe rotbraune oder orange Farbtöne annehmen. Die rote Farbe der Dachziegel wird durch E senoxid hervorgerufen. Auch viele andere Metalloxide werden als Pigmentfarbstoffe genutzt. Pigmentfarben sind in Wasser un löslich. Jedes, auch das Kornchen eines solchen Pigments, ist durch und durch farbig. farbintensiven und temperatur- beständigen Metalloxide werden zum Farben von Glas, Keramik und Porzellan eingesetzt: Cobaltoxid ergibt eine kräftige blaue Farbe, Flaschen glas wird mit Eisenoxid braun ein gefärbt und Mangandioxid bewirkt eine vio lette Farbe. Tirandioxid ist das wichtigste Weißpigment. Wegen seiner hohen Deck kraft wird es immer dort eingesetzt, wo man ein intensives Weiß erhalten möchte, z.B. bei Autolacken und Fassadenanstrichen. Auch Papier und Watte sowie viele Kosme tika, B. Zahnpasta, können dieses Pigment enthalten. In der Natur verhelfen Metall- oxide manchen Edelsteinen zu ihren Farben In lfarben für Gemälde sind die Pigmente mit Leinöl angeteigt. Farblacke zum Schutz von Holz und Metallen enthalten die farbi gen Pigmente in einem farblosen Basislack. Manche Metalloxide, wie Bleioxid und Chromo sind giftig. Andere, wie Eisen oxid oder Titandioxid, hingegen sind ungif tig. Zinkoxid ist sogar Bestandteil von hei lenden Hautsalben.
