Made this large 1/2 gallon size wheel thrown pitcher today. It has a geometric design around the neck and porcelain dots, and an appropriately sized pulled handle with a thumb grip. It is light so it will not be too heavy when filled with tea, water, or lemonade! This is one of those pieces I wish I could keep for myself. Made in 2016, a good year, production wise. This was depicting a bear and a cross. The beginning is always the shapes of life, combined with random/automatic markmaking that magically become recognisable objects and entities from our World of things. This was made in the preceeding year of Ancient Scent 1, when I was a follower of Charlies ‘evolving process’. Unbeknown to him, he was using many of the Surrealist methods of practice. This is made in an off white body by Geoff at Fosters Pottery in Poole, near Redruth. ‘Come up and see me sometime’ showroom shots from way back. I now have a 20th century archive room and a 21st Century area away from the dust of the ceramics studio. This bowl was made to fit a base form made a few years back. Being that assemblage seems to be a ‘thing’ for me, dating back to a suburban, baby boomer childhood. The bowl does not balance without the base, the base being useless without the bowl. Tactile sense (as always) is of utmost importance to my practice. This bowl being a pleasure to hold, gloss glazed for practicality. Looking for simplicity at the beginning of August, this body of work has spent much time under plastic sheeting, suspended in time. White decorating slip was jug poured into vessel, the outer wall cleaned of drips. Approximately 20 hours between making and slipping, then again left to dry before working on outside wall with slips and oxides. Looking for simplicity at the beginning of August, this body of work has spent much time under plastic sheeting, suspended in time. Consequently, I am still at the leather hard stage, considering what to do next. It is my experience that the most problematic of pots sometimes turn out to be the most true and close to my instinct. Big curved form with no straight edges - Other views. I often use the shapes of life as a starting point for my surfaces, usually on a white slipped ground that responds to the form beneath (always a figurative reference). These shapes are then overlaid/underlaid/scratched back, printed into, obscuring and revealing as I go, purposely overworked because I simply can’t stop. Prone to excess, I adapt the form and surface to suit each other, despite the clashing intersections of self conscious expression. My work is simply about the endurance and mystery of nature, a time before this and the absolute power of love. I tend to use many strips of extra soft clay to build these organic vessels. I work with bandage sized lengths soft red clay, soft enough to be on the edge of collapse. I cut, remove and add form, usually taking a few days because I tend to work in small collections that relate to each other. The surface is heavily oxided in some areas, usually suspended in water for the ‘bleed’ effect. Reactive/inactive slips are overlaid/underlaid for optimum chemical reaction. Also used - readymade brights, basic clear, maiolica and too many to list, own recipe formulas. My work is about this life that we simultaneously live, necessarily my experience of it - for the sake of authenticity.
