RACHEL RUSSELL (AGE 28)

COBOURG, ONTARIO

Rachel Russell was 28 years old when her body was found by a passerby around 1:30 pm near abandoned railroad tracks in Cobourg, Ontario on November 12, 2007. She died from blunt force trauma and is believed to have been left in that location for about two weeks before she was found. A man named Wayne Ryman was arrested in connection with Rachel's murder in 2008, but charges were dropped by the crown and he was considered ruled out as a suspect.

Rachel's remains were found in an area frequented by drug dealers and users. She had recently suffered a burst appendix, the treatment for which left her addicted to pain killers. Authorities report that hers is an active investigation and they have set up a $50,000 reward for information in Rachel's case. May Rachel rest in presence and may justice find her killer(s).

If you are considering purchasing a semi-detached house or townhome, you may want to consider how the party walls are built. The materials used can make a big difference in sound transmission and preventing the spread of fire.

Your family's safety is # 1 priority.

Homes built 20+ years ago were typically built using masonry fireproof walls, consisting of concrete and/or brick. These walls provide superior fire resistance compared to drywall firewalls. It is also very effective in reducing sound transfer between adjacent homes.

Modern homes are now built using fire-rated drywall. A drywall party wall is a lighter and more cost-effective alternative to a masonry wall. Drywall party walls are less fire resistant and provide less sound insulation compared to masonry party walls. The Ontario Building Code (OBC) requires a 1 hour fire rating for party walls, which can be achieved with drywall but is a minimum standard.

When purchasing, it's important to inspect your party wall to ensure there are no issues such as holes. This can significantly decrease the wall's ability to reduce sound transmission and slow the spread of fire. Most commonly we find issues in the attic, so we suggest you start your inspection there.

So, if you are looking to purchase a semi-detached house or townhome, we recommend considering the age of the building, and having it inspected to protect your family.
