   She shouldn’t get involved. 

   Nothing good ever came of getting involved with squads. She needed to leave them to their own devices. But from her limited exposure to Squad 13, she had already ascertained one thing: Code 056 was a very integral part.

   One could argue that all of them were an integral part. ( And surely, she would, if anyone else had been in pain -- not that she would admit that to herself, now. ) They relied upon each other. They needed each other. 

   If it were not so tragic, perhaps she would find it fascinating.

   Soundlessly, she entered the room where she sensed him. Outwardly, there were no signs of the fever she felt blistering across her skin, and she understood. He was like... a bird. Hiding weaknesses, so as not to be caught upon by prey. 

   She understood. But he was still foolish for doing so here. 

   Before him, she set down a tray. A glass of cool water. A bucket of ice chips. A basin with water and rags in it. A plate of toast. And then she moved, still without so much as looking at him, to the other side of the room, where she opened her display device and began reading something on it.

   She’s tempted, of course, to look now -- but she holds that base instinct back and focuses on the kid that’s pulled her aside. He’s smiling up at her, small, but still warm and sociable. “There is?” is the first thing out of her mouth. She stretches casually as she pulls  -- lets her hand fall on the hilt of her sword. She’s ready. “You make it a habit to try to save adults you run into on the street?”

   She’s leaning forward, face characteristically serious, hands folded and hanging loosely between her legs. She feels Goro beside her more than she sees him -- speaks without looking up. “What do you think of her?”

   “I’m Code 158. It’s such a pleasure to meet someone from the infamous Squad 13.”

   158 extends his hand to the member of Squad 13 before him, smile placid as a still lake stretched across his tall face. Behind him, his pistil stands in her dress uniform, slouching so far down she looks like she’s barely four feet tall, as though hoping 158′s height will block her out totally. She wrings her fingers -- shifts uncomfortably on her feet. 158 continues smiling.

   “This is Code 396.” 

   She jumps at having been mentioned -- mutters out a “H-h-hi,” from beneath her long hair, and continues to go back to staring at the ground, face pinker than her lips. 158 smiles sympathetically down to her -- looks back over to the other with a helpless half-shrug. 

   “I hope you’ll forgive her. She’s still shaken from the battle.” He doesn’t say it dismissively, or rudely -- a true apology, with true empathy in his voice. Still, his smile never falters or leaves his face. “We’re really so grateful that your squad was willing to take us in while our plantation is being rebuilt. I hope we aren’t a burden on you, and that we can all get along while we’re here.”

eye contact meeting someone's gaze is far too intimate. they could be across a crowded room but when your eyes meet they feel right next to you. close your eyes when it gets to be too much but don't lose sight of them. they are still watching you- what can it mean?
