God help the child by Toni Morrison.
Pros: amazing writing, constant examples of colorism in every day life, shows how colorism from a parent can stay with a child growing up, the best book I've ever read
Cons: none
Warnings: there's a lot of child sexual abuse in here and brief scenes of violence between characters, so keep that in mind if you decide to give it a go please!

I'm tired of having to look for "good lighting" before I take a picture. This is me. I am not bitter, nor am I upset for being dark, I'm just proud, if you feel otherwise then you need to check yourself.

“Despite the rise in diversity on film, many black girls are not still not seeing many actors who look like them on-screen. Even Zendaya herself has addressed this, as she openly admitted to “have a bit of a privilege compared to [her] darker sisters and brothers” in her acting career due to having light skin. “If I get put in a position because of the color of my skin where people will listen to me, then I should use that privilege the right way," she's said.
“Why does this matter? Why does it matter that a black woman with lighter skin is portraying a black character with dark skin? Why does it matter that some of the most popular black actresses are light-skinned? Because it indicates that Hollywood still overwhelmingly believes that a black woman must possess non-black ancestry or features to be considered beautiful or valuable. Likewise, many black actors with dark skin and "blacker" features are being denied access to film roles.
In 1982, author Alice Walker coined the term "colorism" to describe the prejudices uniquely targeted to  black people with darker skin and kinkier hair. Colorism is a ideology from the slavery era where slaves with lighter skin were given a host of privileges not awarded to their dark-skinned counterparts. Colorism created the belief that lighter-skinned black people are better, smarter, and more attractive than their darker-skinned counterparts because they have a closer proximity to whiteness”.

How it feels to run a colorism project moodboard
[From top left to right
0 days since last colorist nonsense
i dead ass dont know how to convince you that thinking all girls with dark skin are ugly isnt a "preference"
please stop trying to convince me that you're a victim of colorism when you have light skin
my mom said we're not allowed to be friends because you only have half a brain cell left and think colorism is just dark skinned girls being "sad" guys "don't want to smash" :/

@ all y'all who think "we're all black to white folks" and try to dismiss colorism because of that Wrong belief
... Then why the fuck they separate us during slavery? Why were enslaved people with dark skin out in the field and enslaved people with light skin in the house?? If they really can't see different shades of black how could they do that???

I was also thinking about how people will jump over themselves and make the biggest reaches to claim that reverse colorism is real & that the bullying or racism they faced was actually colorism. But you can't experience colorism if you don't have dark skin- it's a word that was coined to describe a unique experience that not everyone faces.

Same Family, Different Colors by Lori L. Tharps
Pros: sections on colorism in the Black, asian, and Latino communities, the first solid chunk of the book is actually about colorism, the author has good intentions, new (to me at least) information about/surrounding colorism, personal experiences with colorism.
Cons: starts to focus more on identity issues that light skinned and/or mixed people face rather than colorism, has some odd/not good language.
