Some more photos of my first big sgraffito'd bird ladies (in greenware mode - the raven I plan to glaze with blue/green translucent celadons to mimic the iridescence of actual ravens, the loon will just get a clear glaze once she's bisqued)!
The common loon is a commission for a friend, and I'm hoping to have time to sculpt two more raven ladies because I think a three-raven photoshoot would be really cool (& also they'll end up in my shop...or at least two of them will). This raven lady can hold a few stems of dried flowers/foliage or maybe some special feathers for her spellcasting :)
MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND ONE: COMMON LOON vs. BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have the master of the waves, the king of the lake, the COMMON LOON!
this bird is a true lunatic. this bird is a true master of the water, and his haunting calls can be heard echoing across the lakes and ponds of north america. this is a fierce competitor that always gives 110% in the ring. get ready for some aquatic action, folks, because the common loon is about to take flight and deliver some serious punishment to its opponent.
IN THE RED CORNER, we have the high-energy, high-flying, and high-pitched wrestler, the black capped chickadee!
this cold-weather bruiser is well loved among backyard birders for its charming chirps and its boldness around humans - excited fans report being able to feed chickadees by hand. this little dynamo's calls are highly complex, able to communicate different types of information to members of its flock. most well-known is the "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call that gives this wrestler its name. it sounds simple, but this call has been the subject of research since the 1970s due to its complexity. this call can be arranged in different patterns to communicate information about threats from predators and coordinate group movements. watch out, because the black capped chickadee is one fierce competitor that won't back down from any challenge.
MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND TWO: MOURNING DOVE vs. COMMON LOON
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have a very special guest, the mournful monstrosity, the MOURNING DOVE!
this opponent is beloved by fans across north america for its plaintive, distinctive call. that recognizable series of coos is sometimes mistaken for an owl - and folks, much like the owl, the mourning dove is a true predator once it enters the ring. this isn't any ordinary match - it's a battle of heart and soul, of determination and grit. and tonight, there can only be one winner. will the mourning dove be able to claim victory? or will its opponent prove to be too much to handle? there's only one way to find out!
IN THE RED CORNER, from the crystal clear waters of the north, we have the pop culture phenomenon, the COMMON LOON!
with its sleek black and white plumage and piercing red eyes, this bird means business. the most common thing about this bird is its call, which has found its way into the backgrounds of dozens of movies whether the loon has any business being there or not. you can blame that on how haunting and otherworldly it is - a true shortcut to sending a shiver down the spines of audiences everywhere. so brace yourself for a match like no other as the common loon takes flight and dominates the competition. its strength and agility will leave you in awe, and its ferocity will leave you trembling. get ready, bird call fans, because the common loon is here to rule the ring!
