She's Melting!
January 27, 1947: Pictured here is F. J. Scully checking the depth of a puddle while going about his rounds at the melting ice palace in Highland Park, at the corner of Edgecumbe and Montreal Avenues in St. Paul. Officials hoped the temperatures would remain below freezing when they laid the cornerstone on January 15, but no such luck. Due to the thaw, the coronation of King Boreas, set for February 2nd, was relocated to Como Park Conservatory. Nevertheless, Vulcan, the fire king, and his cohorts stormed the ice palace on February 9, signaling the overthrow of winter by the forces of spring.
The ice palace is a signature feature of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The 2023 Winter Carnival runs from January 26-February 5.

Are druids expected to do the rituals no matter what the situation is? Overall if its 20 feet of snow on the ground and its the time where a ritual will happen will it get done or will you take a raincheck?
I don’t know how deep the snow actually was, but there have been RDNA druid rituals conducted in Antarctica.
Ice Floe Grove was led by Ian Friesland while he lived there from 1999-2002 or at least sometime during those years. I think he said his congregation consisted more of penguins than of scientists or something to that effect. He also established the temporary Amazon Grove from 2002-2003 in the humid rainforests of Brazil.
Overall in the RDNA rituals will proceed rain or shine, though there have been exceptions. Our recent Beltane was rescheduled for May 7th because our planned April 30th scheduling was looking to be cold, rainy, and blustery. I wanted to reschedule since we were expecting a big turnout including a photographer from the Star Tribune.
But we’ve held rituals in the rain before, usually warmer rain. Also we’ve had rituals in the snow and once during the 2014 Polar Vortex when the high temperature was -7°F (-22°C). However, that did go out of Oakdale Grove’s policies as it states we should reschedule if the temperature is below 15°F (-9°C). There’s no upper limit for temperature written into our policy but it’s arbitrarily 100°F (38°C). The Polar Vortex ritual was actually half indoors, where we met at the Como Park Conservatory which was full of tropical plants. Halfway into the ritual we needed to seek an omen on the winds, so we went outside. Our chalice had a crust of ice forming in minutes!
Long story short is that we will reschedule if it’s really bad. If there’s lightning or a threat of thunderstorms we are absolutely urged by tradition to stop everything or reschedule for the sake of safety.

While shooting at the Como Park Conservatory we stumbled upon some smaller flowers that contrasted perfectly with her skin. She laid in the flowers and we got this magical shot. Her skin, the white, green, and purple all tell a magical story of the beauty of Black Women.
