#competent kuniharu

Haha no worries! It's downplayed a lot in the series because it's supposed to be a comedy, but when you start looking more closely at the stuff Kuniharu does, it paints a picture of a terrible father and a bad husband too.

It's been a topic on the blog several times, so I'm sure people can chime in with more evidence, but here's what's off the top of my head...

Raised Kusuke. Nuff said tbh lol.

Kuniharu calls Kusuo a monster multiple times and is almost certainly the reason why Kusuke and Kusuo himself believe that Kusuo is an inhuman freak. This attitude is certainly not coming from Kurumi, and nobody else knew about Kusuo's power. From the beginning of the series, Kusuo genuinely believes he's unable to connect with other human beings, and it's mostly because of this attitude inherited from his father.

Kuniharu is never seen attempting to prevent Kusuke from constantly picking fights with his brother, and only attempting to discipline Kusuo for behavior that Kuniharu considers disrespectful to him. This is mostly a fact by omission, but we do see him belittling Kusuke when the kid obviously already has an inferiority problem.

Kuniharu is one of the worst performers at his job and the first to be let go in the case of a crisis. When he loses his job, he's unable to find any others because his only real skill is shoe-licking. This was a parody chapter though so questionably canon. He's always running late for his job though and we see him trying to make a manga artist rip off Naruto, so honestly it makes sense that he's that bad at his job. The only time he's shown as slightly competent at his job was during a parody chapter too hsfjdlshfks.

However what's definitely canon is that he either doesn't make much money or mis-spends most of it. In an area where Nendo's mom, a single woman, and Satou's family, the exact average family, can afford to live, Kuniharu had to take out an 80 year mortgage to pay for a similarly sized home. For context, most mortgages are for 30 years, 15 if you git gud. Btw, the house was literally a gift from Kusuke, Kuniharu insisted on paying out of manly pride or something. Sir, Kusuke is a freaking billionaire and this is like the only single no-strings-attached genuinely kind thing he's ever done hsfjdlshfks

Completely irresponsible with money: has a huge Valentine's day budget for his wife's gift ($3,000 iirc?) and then spends it all at the bar paying for his coworkers' drinks (the same guys who abuse him at his job and think he's garbage). He also spends huge amounts of money on his model figure collection, and has a whole room of gym equipment he never uses. As a result, Kusuo has a very small allowance and for some reason, his one favorite food (coffee jelly) is not included in the grocery list. Even though Kusuo canonically gets insane rock bottom prices for literally everything that gets bought in the household. How do you fuck up so badly financially that you can't buy your clinically depressed son the one (inexpensive!) thing that brings him joy??

By the way, Kuniharu started dating Kurumi when he was a college student and she was in high school. Kusuke was born like a year after they met, so you can do the math about how little time he spent before knocking her up 😬 They basically had a shotgun wedding. No wonder Kurumi's dad is NOT a fan of Kuniharu...

Literally one of the first chapters is Kuniharu and Kurumi domestic violence but make it funny. They're throwing furniture, Kuniharu is breaking the windows, Kurumi is yeeting her husband, and all this shit is over a single coffee jelly, which again, should be a normal part of the groceries for their household. They constantly bring their son into this drama too, which I'm sure is fantastic for his mental and emotional development btw.

There's a manga exclusive chapter that's a parody, so questionably canon, but in it Kuniharu physically attacks Kusuo multiple times over differences in opinion.

However, it IS canon that Kuniharu takes any opportunity to try to physically harm Kusuo. Ex. Hitting him in the massage episode and trying to step on him when he turns tiny.

Canon tries to redeem him a bit by showing moments where Kusuo is a baby and Kuniharu is trying really hard to make him smile because he wants his baby boy to be happy. Unfortunately that just makes it seem like he tried to be a good father for a bit when Kusuo was a baby, and then as soon as Kusuo's powers developed enough to make him miserable (the time when he needs the MOST familial support!), Kuniharu just gives up, and starts using Kusuo as his personal genie in a bottle. While also trying to fix his own fragile ego by attempting to establish dominance over his son. ????? Get therapy bro.

Canon also shows that Kuniharu's love points for Kusuo are the same as for his wife, however, not even Kuniharu believes that, as he tries to run away to evade it hsfjdlshfks. And even if he does love his son that much, he certainly doesn't show it in any meaningful way, because his literal MIND-READING SON doesn't know that. There are plenty of parents who truly love their kids and still abuse them like hell because they think that's the right thing to do (see Kaido's mom being overly strict because she wants to see him succeed in life), so the love points don't mean much imo.

Kuniharu does dole out a couple of pieces of wisdom (at Kusuo's wrong date birthday party and in the volcano arc) but that really doesn't make up for anything and even his wife thinks he's childish so... 🇫

Kuniharu is definitely funny as a character, and like I said, most of this requires digging into canon a little more, but once you start looking, it becomes clear that Kuniharu is just not a good person, father, or husband.

Like, I totally get that having a genius and a god as your kids would not be easy for any parent, but Kuniharu really doesn't try to make life better for either of his sons, preferring to get into petty squabbles with his wife and play video games/build models the rest of the time. I'm not saying dads can't have hobbies, but the only times we see him spending time with Kusuo is usually when he's begging for a favor, and he also clearly does zero housework whatsoever, so...

Anyways, I think Kurumi deserves a better husband and Kusuo deserves a better parent (or at least a break from being used as a magical favor vending machine lol) so I often joke on here that Kurumi should get a divorce and run polls about who she should marry instead and such!

The Psychickers and the main idiots all join together through their shared common link, of course. Saiki, once he gets to a better mental state, finally begins having consistent heats. And of course, everyone is clamoring for the opportunity to be close and snuggle to the guy. Heats are designed to bring packs together, to form bonds and connections between people. With their purring pack omega smelling of joy and love, it would have been nearly impossible for them not to join in on those feelings and get along with each other. From there, it kind of just all falls into place.

Kuboyasu and Saiki are essentially leaders of the pack, even if it's not really said out loud. It's basically the same thing as their canon co-parent roles lol. Kuboyasu takes pride in how well he can provide for Saiki, and is also on the traditional side, so this means Saiki receives a lot of courting gifts and home-cooked meals. It weird out Saiki at first because he thinks of those as things his mom does, and by extension, a traditional omega. Kuboyasu just explains to him how he should be able to take care of Saiki in case something were to happen, and how he needed to prove himself a worthy mate to his inner omega. And instead of getting defensive like he usually does when Kusuke or Kuniharu attempt to talk the same way, Saiki kind of just melts. It's because the way Kuboyasu talks about him makes it seem like they're equals and he's doing all of that because he cares for Saiki. The other two do it because they care about their designations, and believe it's just the way of things.

Also, a lot of Teruhashi's arc is similar to Saiki's in a way (learning to let others take care of them authentically, letting themselves be seen, etc.), but Teruhashi's more settles on her learning to be willing to concede to someone else every so often. Saiki's role as pack omega is kind of hard for her to accept at first, but she eventually realizes that she's just... not really interested in it beyond the degree of control it offers. Once she accepts Saiki as someone competent and willing to accept her as less than perfect, she's a lot happier. She's still a bit distant with Kuboyasu at times, but she's coming to understand that his actions come out of genuine affection, not lust or attraction.

Additionally, Toritsuka and Aiura are both very attracted to Saiki actually! A lot of Toritsuka's advancements tend to be, oddly enough, on the shyer side (It's because he's genuinely attracted to Saiki, rather than just stuck with a week-long infatuation). Aiura is smooth enough to make even Saiki flush sometimes, but she tones it down a lot once she realizes his attraction to Kuboyasu. They're still platonic soulmates. All together, these two provide one of the best examples of alphas being willing to listen to Saiki when he's being his true, authentic self, unlike his family. Their influence on his opening up with the others cannot be overstated.

As for Akechi... their relationship will be discovered a bit more in the first coming chapter :3

I was rereading the manga for the umpteenth time, and I got reminded of this again. Y'all remember the chapter where Kusuo's mom and dad compete over who loves each other more?

And then it ended up in a draw with 38,095 as both their love points for each other.

But then they weren't satisfied with a tie so Kurumi suggested they should compete over who loves Kusuo more instead.

While Kuniharu ran away because he wasn't confident, his and Kurumi's love points for Kusuo ended up in a tie once again, however, with the score being 38,689 this time. Which means their love for Kusuo is almost 600 points HIGHER than their love for each other and I 😭

Let's talk about the fact that they ignored their children so much to the point that kuusuke and kusuos relationship has become.. Like that. They care about each other more than they do their children and that proves it.

They could've explained to kuusuke that kusuo wasn't trying to compete with him back then when they were young and was only copying him bc he looked up to his older brother, not because he was trying to be better ay everything.

And should I mention the fact that they argued none stop Infront of their child for months ? Sure, kusuo is an all powerful psychic, but he's still human. He's still technically a kid, and yet they argued Infront of him and acted violent without caring about HOW it would affect him. As someone who's witnessed parents arguing before ; It affects children more than you'd think.

Also ; Can we talk about how they didn't bother to contact or visit kuusuke, not even ONCE? They only bothered to visit their oldest child when kusuo needed his help. And the fact he wasn't even mentioned until that episode is just.. it just rubs me off the wrong way a little.

Yes, they aren't the worst parents, but they're not entirely that good either. every parent has their flaws, they have theirs.

If you’re hoping for Kusuo to be romantic about this, then you’re about to be very disappointed.

He proves that competing against him for sweets is an uphill battle. Still, you’ll be damned if you don’t at least try.

The coffee table is void of all snacks as of this late evening. An anime Kusuo had switched on some time ago is long forgotten, now serving as background noise for you, scrolling through social medias with one hand. With the other, you sweep your fingers over Kusuo’s knuckles, bumping your index lightly on the germanium ring he seldom wears. You chuckle in your place beside him.

“Aww. Kookie, check this out.” You present him with your bright screen, and he has to squint at it. It’s a recent picture of Kusuo’s parents on their anniversary getaway in Okinawa. Kuniharu has Kurumi in a bridal hold while she flashes the camera with a peace sign. They both smile as joyfully as if they’re newlyweds. “Your parents are so romantic.”

His face is still flat when you go back to scrolling. ‘Are you trying to tell me something?’

“Of course not,” you clarify, the ends of your lips quirking up. “I’m just thinking aloud. It’s really sweet.” Kusuo raises an accusatory eyebrow at the supposed implication that he isn’t sweet enough. The germanium chafes on his ring finger. He doesn’t search openly for approval, but it’s distressing, not knowing if he’s doing well as a partner. He keeps the ring on, for his peace of mind about your privacy.

‘I can say with one hundred percent certainty that I don’t fully believe you.’

“You wound me, Kusuo,” you utter with a dramatic swoosh of your hair, feigning hurt. “I thought you had more faith in me. After I bought you all these desserts, you had me under the impression that you loved me.” You flop over his lap with a pointed, ‘ugh’. Kusuo rolls his eyes in an expression of exasperation, but it’s only to keep the smile internal. Speaking of desserts, you reach out to the coffee table, but your desired treat is nowhere to be found on it. You click your tongue. “Man.” ‘Did we eat all of them already?’

Right then, you remember that there’s one standing coffee jelly cup in the fridge... but Kusuo’s memory also catches up to yours. He’s already staring at you when you turn to him, stern-faced as ever. A heavy minute of silence hangs overhead.

“...”

You’re thoroughly startled when Kusuo suddenly shoots off the couch like a bullet and flies straight to the refrigerator. You’re barely composed when you scramble to follow after, hopping over the couch and tripping over bare feet to get towards the kitchen.

You groan aloud when you find Kusuo with his elbows on the counter, dangling the now-empty cup of the gelatinous dessert like a dog trainer with an empty leash. You’re positive he absolutely means to sound as patronizing as he does when he says,

‘Oh, sorry. Did you want this?’ Now it’s your turn to roll your eyes at him.

Before you can leave the room to drown your sorrows in a fizzy drink, he has you pinned to the kitchen doorway. The kiss that follows is short and, not surprisingly, very sweet. He exhales hard when he pulls off of you.

‘Was that sweet enough for you? Glutton.’

Kusuo heads back to the living room without a care in the world. Y’know, like he hadn’t just stolen and eaten your coffee jelly right in your face. You have a reprimand on the tip of your tongue, but it fizzles out when you feel the solid outline of a lollipop in your back pocket. Steadily, your smile grows again. Don’t question how it got there. You will get nowhere, and fast. Kusuo’s not one to kiss and tell.

Kusuo Saiki is not a slacker. He’ll pay for your dessert-for-dinner dates without complaint, but has equally no qualms about you paying if you’ve offered.

As established, Kusuo isn’t generally romantic about this. Even so, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll totally rule out the option of turning it into something romantic. This situation has too much potential. Perhaps you head for home, often to a bedazzled little basket of goodies on your doorstep...

You call each other nicknames like Mooch or Glutton, just for the fun of it. And, whose to say either of you are really wrong about that...

Kusuo gets double the sweetness, now that you’re here. His beloved coffee jelly simply doesn’t compare.

what im trying to say is kuniharu had potential to be more competent with dealing with his children’s antics. a veteran dad who knows how to disarm a bomb (kuusuke tried to make fireworks) and who knows how to properly deal with swarms of frogs appearing on his door step (kusuo trying to get rid of bugs in the area). he literally could have lightning fast reflexes after living with those two and insane knowledge about how to survive the oddest things but instead we get. we get...
