NHLPA launches a new program to help players prepare for life outside of hockey

full article under cut:
Early in his time in the NHL, Darnell Nurse says he did not notice a lot of players talking about what to do after hockey. Going into his ninth season, the chatter is now normal.
“People are curious as to what there is outside the game and what you can do to prepare yourself,” Nurse said.
Plenty of players have taken it upon themselves to prepare for the future, like Zdeno Chara getting his real estate license and others finishing college degrees or exploring business opportunities. The NHL Players’ Association on Thursday launched a program that gives its members the chance to do a personality analysis and delve into real estate, business or other avenues while still in the league.
The hope is to help them develop interests outside of hockey while playing and ease the transition to life afterward.
“It’s something that’s been missing a little bit,” veteran center Lars Eller told The Associated Press. “It’s kind of well known that one of the struggles for a professional athlete is the transition on to the next thing once he’s done with his professional career. And this platform helps you with that transition, and it’s something you can start even while you’re still playing so you can sort of hit the ground running once you’re done.”
New union boss Marty Walsh made helping former players one of his top priorities. His arrival in March coincided with a process two years in the making, after player feedback indicated the desire for more assistance outside of hockey.
The result is the NHLPA UNLMT program. Retired defenseman-turned-psychologist Jay Harrison is available to do an assessment, and players can get involved with companies ranging from Money Management International to The Second City comedy and improv theater and institutions like the University of Florida and Stanford’s graduate school of business.
Former goaltender Rob Zepp, who’s spearheading the program as the union’s director of strategic initiatives, said an extensive survey provided the building blocks for something that was designed to be 1-on-1 and customized for players to figure out what might interest them.
“What we’ve seen so far it really runs the gamut: anything from enhancing one’s personal brand to starting a podcast to taking these certificate-level courses in real estate, in entrepreneurship, in business, in leadership, communication skills, networking skills,” Zepp said. “We have players that are interested in or are currently pursuing commercial real estate avenues or farming ventures or construction.”
Eller, Nurse and Buffalo captain Kyle Okposo are among the players who have tried UNLMT so far. Okposo has already graduated from Stanford’s business leadership program, while Eller has spoken with Harrison and taken some of the courses offered.
“They’re not waiting until people’s careers are over,” said Nurse, who is still in his prime at 28. “It’s something that you can dip your feet into and grab a hold of while you’re still playing and giving you resources and opportunities to kind of figure out what you want to do.”
Zepp got a degree from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the University of Liverpool the old-school way — tapes and textbooks sent by mail and tests taken in front of a proctor — while playing mostly in the minors and Europe before before 10 games with Philadelphia in 2014-15. He felt like having something to study made him a better goalie and understood there was plenty of idle time on the road.
Eller, who is a silent partner involved with helping start-up businesses, thinks the same way.
“We, as players, we have — not a lot of freedom once the season is starting — but we do have a lot of free time,” said Eller, who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for Washington in 2018 and is a pending free agent at 34. “It’s a huge positive if you have something else that you can take your mind off of hockey and do something productive with that time.”
Walsh got to know several Bruins alumni when he was mayor of Boston and has since talked to other former players and come away with a mandate to protect guys beyond their time on the ice.
“When they played, they gave it their all, and a lot of them didn’t really have anything after that,” Walsh said. “They didn’t make big contracts. They really didn’t have a strong pension system. A lot of them, even going back further than that, lost stuff. We can’t let that happen again.”

Date built: 1949
Design: Architect Philip Johnson
photographs : Simon Garcia | arqfoto.com
The Glass House was completed in 1949. It is a National Trust Historic Site on a 49-acre campus.
Inspired by architect Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House (Plano, IL, USA), its exterior walls are made of glass, a radical departure from houses of the time.
The Glass House was the start of Philip Johnson’s fifty-year odyssey of architectural experimentation in forms, materials, and ideas, through the addition of other structures. These include the Brick House/Guest House, Pond Pavilion, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, Ghost House, Library/Study, Da Monsta, and the methodical sculpting of the surrounding landscape.

Lynn Davis: On Ice
August 24 – November 30, 2017
Lynn Davis: On Ice presents a selection of photographs from the artist’s longstanding engagement with the icebergs on the sea outside of Ilulissat, a small town on the edge of a glacier off the west coast of Greenland. Developed over the course of six expeditions that began in 1986, Davis’s photographs evidence strong affinities with the spare geometry of minimalist sculpture and track the dramatic transformation of the natural environment.
As the Glass House commemorates its 10th year as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the exhibition additionally celebrates Davis’s friendship with David Whitney and Philip Johnson, both of whom collected the artist’s work.

Hermès and the Glass House present Centered Rhyme
Hermès and the Glass House are honored to introduce Centered Rhyme, a limited-edition 90x90cm silk twill scarf featuring a design by the late American artist Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927-2016). The design is based on a large-scale 1967 painting by the artist.
To purchase, please contact the Glass House Design Store via phone at 203-594-9884 x0 or email at [email protected]. A portion of the proceeds from the sale the Centered Rhyme scarf will go towards the preservation of the Glass House.
Elaine Lustig Cohen was highly regarded as a graphic designer, artist, and rare book dealer throughout her career, which spanned over fifty years. In 1955, she began her design work in New York by extending the idiom of European modernism into an American context for her diverse clientele of publishers, corporations, cultural institutions, and architects. Her first client was Philip Johnson – architect of the celebrated Glass House (1949) in New Canaan, Connecticut – who commissioned her to design the lettering and signage for the iconic Seagram Building.
The two forged an important bond that resulted in a variety of projects for the Glass House, Yale University, and Lincoln Center, among others. As a painter, Lustig Cohen developed a hard-edged style in the 1960s and 1970s that asserted the canvas’ flat surface. She continued to experiment with bold colors, linear patterning, and abstract shapes in a variety of media including collage and three-dimensional objects.
Following a 2015 exhibition of the artist’s early paintings and graphic design at the Glass House, Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermès, met the artist at her Manhattan home and conceived of a scarf based on her painting Centered Rhyme (1967). Pierre-Alexis and Elaine discovered a deep intellectual and philosophical connection while touring her remarkable personal collection of eclectic art and artifacts, including ancient printed silks.
The project was made in collaboration with the Glass House, a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, that in alignment with Hermès values is dedicated to the promotion of cultural and architectural preservation, artistry and craftsmanship.
The limited-edition Hermès 90cm x 90cm silk twill design, $395.00, will be presented in Lustig Cohen’s original coloration; crème/jaune/rose, and sold at the Glass House Design Store and Hermès boutiques.

New Offerings for San Antonio Missions National Park Coins
Each of the 5-ounce coins includes 99.9 percent silver and is delivered in a keepsake box accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. (Image courtesy of the United States Mint)
The United States Mint will be opening sales for several new offerings of the 2019 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park coin, which are part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
The America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin
Tumblr media
– San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (Texas) is the fourth release of 2019 in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The reverse (tails) design depicts elements of the Spanish Colonial Real coin to pay tribute to the missions. Within the quadrants are symbols of the missions: wheat symbolizes farming; the arches and bell symbolize community; a lion symbolizes Spanish cultural heritage, and a symbol of the San Antonio River symbolizes irrigation methods and life-sustaining resources. Inscriptions are “SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS,” “TEXAS,” “2019,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The San Antonio Missions made up one of the largest concentrations of Spanish missions in North America during the 1700s and helped create the foundation for the city of San Antonio. The missions were built as walled compounds containing the church, living quarters, workshops, storerooms, and fortified towers. The blending of cultures is reflected in the 18th-century Spanish architecture and indigenous designs.
The missions were built close together because of the natural resources found near the San Antonio River. Construction of aqueducts and irrigation canals (acequias) brought water to the missions, sustaining farming and ranching. The missions’ toolmaking, carpentry, looming, spinning, and masonry further contributed to the community’s ability to be self-sustaining.
The missions are surrounded by residential and commercial areas, demonstrating both their modern-day success and unbroken connection with the past.
The Mint will be offering an Uncirculated Five Ounce Silver Coin, composed of 99.9 percent silver as well as bags and rolls of the quarters.
The five-ounce uncirculated coin is minted at the Philadelphia Mint and will sell for $154.95.  A total of 20,000 will be made available with no household or product limits.
The bags and rolls of the quarters can be purchased in 100-coin bags ($34.95), from the Philadelphia, Denver or San Francisco Mint.  Two-roll sets ($32.95) include quarters from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, while the three-roll set ($46.95) also includes San Francisco’s Mint.  The 40-coin roll ($18.95) is from the San Francisco Mint.  There is no mintage limit on these products.
Orders can be placed beginning on August 26 at 12 noon (Eastern) for the rolls and bags at www.usmint.gov or by calling 800-USA-MINT.  Sales for the five-ounce coin open at 12 noon on August 29.

BASTL prepares for future leadership role
Lori Corden’s educational path took an unexpected turn when she became pregnant while studying electrical engineering at ECPI University in Virginia and returned home to Somerset, Pennsylvania.
She worked and took classes at the Universityof Pittsburgh at Johnstown and a community college, but money was tight. Schoolhad to take a backseat. But Corden remained determined to earn her degree and make a better life for herself and her daughter, Samantha.
Her career started coming together when, working as a road crew flagger, she learned of an inspector certification programthat could lead to a Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission position. She passed the course, moved to central Pennsylvania in 2007 and began work as a turnpike inspector. Seven years ago, she was promoted to construction manager.
She returned to her studies, earning an associate degree in Civil Technology from Harrisburg Area Community College in 2009. She didn’t think she could work full time and earn a bachelor’s degree until HACC informed her about Bloomsburg University’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership (BASTL) program.
“I love my job, butI knew that if I ever wanted to advance at the turnpike, I’d need my bachelor’s degree,” said Corden. “I needed a program that would give me flexibility and not cut into work.”
It also was important that Bloomsburg accept her college credits to avoid repeating courses.
Corden started the BASTL program online and at HACC in 2016 and received her degree in December 2018. She said the classes developed her leadership skills and helped her become a better supervisor, having learned about personality traits and how people interact.
She had felt it important that she set an example for her daughter, now 22, who has graduated from Kutztown University and works in children and youth services for the state of Delaware.
“She tells me all the time that she wouldn’t be where sheis if shedidn’t watch me do it,” said Corden, adding she would encourage anyone thinking about BASTL to pursue the degree. “Education is the one thing that can’t be takenfrom you. Even if I don’t choose to advance, I earned my degree for me.”
After consulting with employers who are looking for skilled managers, Bloomsburg University created its Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership program especially for individuals with associate degrees who are working and need flexibility.
Up to 60 associate degree credits are accepted and half the BASTL classes are online and the rest taught at Bloomsburg’s partner institutions: Bucks County Community College, Community College of Philadelphia, Harrisburg Area Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Northampton Community College and Reading Area Community College, and the State System campus in Center City Philadelphia.

I'm playing the Max's Kansas City reunion tonight with Reagan Youth I did actually get to play the last very end of Max's but it was in the 90's my band X-Possibles had JUST started like we had 5 songs and never played out before and peter was very kind to give us a show since I had gotten his phone number from the customer list that was left on the counter at bleeker bobs omg he West village. Bringing kevs to the city I'm kinda freaked out about the thought that there's not much reason to go there early Because everything I knew is gone and replaced by the usual chain/sushi/condo culture I'm not sure if we should When I was pregnant and had my son I was psyched to raise him in the city I loved and was kinda ignoring that everything I loved was shut down dying closing replaced and once I had Severin the excessive construction noise and stress of moving a little baby around a construction site of a town was too much and I panic moved to Philadelphia for my at the time husbands job/free apartment. Years later we are no longer married and now I'm living in a city that is not my home. I recently did an interview with Jopincushion about the apocalypse and I kept it very America centric because I didn't want to trash talk countries I don't live in because I don't know enough really and also because it was half an hour and there's enough material here without getting into oil spills nuclear waste etc. I also admitted to eating cookies for breakfast with coffee because that happened that day but it's not a regular event and they were "organic" which I'm doubting the validity of these days as canola oil and soy lecithin is in almost everything processed. I haven't had time to work out since an average day goes like wake up spend time with my son make breakfast for me him and Kevin make my sons lunch shower get ready bring sev to school go to any random job come home pack eBay or pack to move or get things ready for the flea market pick up my son make dinner for him spend Time with him bath bedtime stuff then I have maybe an hour with Kevin if he is awake if not I have a brief amount of time to play bass or maybe write or try to sort through the 8zilliom emails and obligations I'm Fucking up because I'd need 3 months of uninterrupted computer time to send photos interviews and band info for tour stuff but kevin and I have unquestionably tapped into the LOVE consciousness I wrote so desperately and searched for obsessed over in GASH because I'm not out of shape and haven't lost anything or gained weight despite being below poverty level financial struggling like - I'm fine and that's energetic. I'm going to include this and explain more in the fitpunx program -<I hate that word I haven't had time To plan it out but my dream is to this year get the national trainer certification I was derailed from Getting before - right After moving that's the next project the only thing is it's a year long program so I have to do online classes and I had no laptop but a friend SENT me one! I'm not sure if he wants his name mentioned I have to ask him. But as soon as I get a working laptop I found the school I can get certified from the next issue is figuring out how to pay for school I'm hesitant to use gofundme because my friends struggle as much as I do- but I know I can actually help musicians health wise and less of us would be dying off because I'm a normal person who was chubby for years with major back issues thyroid problems a bad knee depression and I hate sports and I surpassed regular ass health into holy shit being strong. I'm thinking with the laptop if I do The gofundme I can offer free training videos and health information while I get certified to pay back the help because everything should be even Steven .
