Early in his time in the NHL, Darnell Nurse says he did not notice a lot of players talking about what to do after hockey. Going into his ninth season, the chatter is now normal.

“People are curious as to what there is outside the game and what you can do to prepare yourself,” Nurse said.

Plenty of players have taken it upon themselves to prepare for the future, like Zdeno Chara getting his real estate license and others finishing college degrees or exploring business opportunities. The NHL Players’ Association on Thursday launched a program that gives its members the chance to do a personality analysis and delve into real estate, business or other avenues while still in the league.

The hope is to help them develop interests outside of hockey while playing and ease the transition to life afterward.

“It’s something that’s been missing a little bit,” veteran center Lars Eller told The Associated Press. “It’s kind of well known that one of the struggles for a professional athlete is the transition on to the next thing once he’s done with his professional career. And this platform helps you with that transition, and it’s something you can start even while you’re still playing so you can sort of hit the ground running once you’re done.”

New union boss Marty Walsh made helping former players one of his top priorities. His arrival in March coincided with a process two years in the making, after player feedback indicated the desire for more assistance outside of hockey.

The result is the NHLPA UNLMT program. Retired defenseman-turned-psychologist Jay Harrison is available to do an assessment, and players can get involved with companies ranging from Money Management International to The Second City comedy and improv theater and institutions like the University of Florida and Stanford’s graduate school of business.

Former goaltender Rob Zepp, who’s spearheading the program as the union’s director of strategic initiatives, said an extensive survey provided the building blocks for something that was designed to be 1-on-1 and customized for players to figure out what might interest them.

“What we’ve seen so far it really runs the gamut: anything from enhancing one’s personal brand to starting a podcast to taking these certificate-level courses in real estate, in entrepreneurship, in business, in leadership, communication skills, networking skills,” Zepp said. “We have players that are interested in or are currently pursuing commercial real estate avenues or farming ventures or construction.”

Eller, Nurse and Buffalo captain Kyle Okposo are among the players who have tried UNLMT so far. Okposo has already graduated from Stanford’s business leadership program, while Eller has spoken with Harrison and taken some of the courses offered.

“They’re not waiting until people’s careers are over,” said Nurse, who is still in his prime at 28. “It’s something that you can dip your feet into and grab a hold of while you’re still playing and giving you resources and opportunities to kind of figure out what you want to do.”

Zepp got a degree from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the University of Liverpool the old-school way — tapes and textbooks sent by mail and tests taken in front of a proctor — while playing mostly in the minors and Europe before before 10 games with Philadelphia in 2014-15. He felt like having something to study made him a better goalie and understood there was plenty of idle time on the road.

Eller, who is a silent partner involved with helping start-up businesses, thinks the same way.

“We, as players, we have — not a lot of freedom once the season is starting — but we do have a lot of free time,” said Eller, who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for Washington in 2018 and is a pending free agent at 34. “It’s a huge positive if you have something else that you can take your mind off of hockey and do something productive with that time.”

Walsh got to know several Bruins alumni when he was mayor of Boston and has since talked to other former players and come away with a mandate to protect guys beyond their time on the ice.

“When they played, they gave it their all, and a lot of them didn’t really have anything after that,” Walsh said. “They didn’t make big contracts. They really didn’t have a strong pension system. A lot of them, even going back further than that, lost stuff. We can’t let that happen again.”

Your task is to create the most nubtastic, gawdawful gingerbread McMansion in all of McMansion Hell!! If you succeed, you will be rewarded with cool merch and even some money (as much cash as I’m able to put up post-wedding):

• Gingerbread structures must be constructed mainly of gingerbread and icing.

• Styrofoam and other support materials are not permitted.

• Entries must be original, don’t just assemble a pre-made kit. (to clarify: you can use materials from kits but don’t just put a kit together and call it a McMansion)

• All components of the display, except for the base, must be made of edible materials.

• Edible materials include candy, nuts, cereal, cookies, crackers, pasta, and other food items that do not include wrappers or sticks. Wrappers should be removed from candy and other decorations.

• Entries must be created this year

Entries will be judged on:

This document is a membership certificate for the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons. The society was founded in 1787 by prominent Philadelphia citizens, including Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Benjamin Rush, with the aim of correcting abuses in the city jail. The lithograph contains a vignette with a portrait bust of Bishop White, the long-time president of the organization, and a bird's-eye view of the buildings and grounds of Eastern State Penitentiary. The paragraph at the bottom describes this institution, also known as Cherry Hill State Prison, as “the Model Prison of' The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline' or "Separate System'" of incarceration in which "each convict occupies a single cell or workshop." Other features described are the construction, dimensions, and utilities of the building, including "seven corridors of cells," "heat by hot water," and "water in each cell." The prison was built in 1823–36 after the designs of John Haviland, and was located at 2101–99 Fairmount Avenue.

Skills such as image-making, creating image series, using the techniques of visual rhythm, pattern, textures, scale, direction, weight, space, and a lot more. The course is lavishly spread over four weeks, wherein each week focuses on a new topic:

10. COURSERA – Introduction to Typography:

An LA-based graphic designer, Anther Kiley, addresses this advanced-level course. Basic knowledge of Adobe InDesign, along with access to the software, is required to make most out of this course. This course, too, is a four-week assessment that is divided into four weekly topics that are taught intensively. This is how the course is broken down –

Week 1: Talking Type -Learning different types of typefaces, and considering them as artworks.

Week 2: Typefaces and their Stories – Focuses on how typefaces could have connotative meanings, ending up telling a meaningful story.

Week 3: Putting Type to Work – Engaging the audience with visual principles and conventions of typesetting is the main focal point of this week. This week also talks about how changing spaces between the blocks of the letter and/or the weight of characters can also change the meaning of your design.

Week 4: Making Meaningful Type – In the final week, you would learn how typographic form has potential to change the meaning of the written language too.

As you can see, most of these courses specialize in two aspects of graphic design – understanding the basic principles and building on your typography skills. BASTL prepares for future leadership role

Lori Corden’s educational path took an unexpected turn when she became pregnant while studying electrical engineering at ECPI University in Virginia and returned home to Somerset, Pennsylvania.

She worked and took classes at the Universityof Pittsburgh at Johnstown and a community college, but money was tight. Schoolhad to take a backseat. But Corden remained determined to earn her degree and make a better life for herself and her daughter, Samantha.

Her career started coming together when, working as a road crew flagger, she learned of an inspector certification programthat could lead to a Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission position. She passed the course, moved to central Pennsylvania in 2007 and began work as a turnpike inspector. Seven years ago, she was promoted to construction manager.

She returned to her studies, earning an associate degree in Civil Technology from Harrisburg Area Community College in 2009. She didn’t think she could work full time and earn a bachelor’s degree until HACC informed her about Bloomsburg University’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership (BASTL) program.

“I love my job, butI knew that if I ever wanted to advance at the turnpike, I’d need my bachelor’s degree,” said Corden. “I needed a program that would give me flexibility and not cut into work.”

It also was important that Bloomsburg accept her college credits to avoid repeating courses.

Corden started the BASTL program online and at HACC in 2016 and received her degree in December 2018. She said the classes developed her leadership skills and helped her become a better supervisor, having learned about personality traits and how people interact.

She had felt it important that she set an example for her daughter, now 22, who has graduated from Kutztown University and works in children and youth services for the state of Delaware.

“She tells me all the time that she wouldn’t be where sheis if shedidn’t watch me do it,” said Corden, adding she would encourage anyone thinking about BASTL to pursue the degree. “Education is the one thing that can’t be takenfrom you. Even if I don’t choose to advance, I earned my degree for me.”

After consulting with employers who are looking for skilled managers, Bloomsburg University created its Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership program especially for individuals with associate degrees who are working and need flexibility.

Up to 60 associate degree credits are accepted and half the BASTL classes are online and the rest taught at Bloomsburg’s partner institutions: Bucks County Community College, Community College of Philadelphia, Harrisburg Area Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Northampton Community College and Reading Area Community College, and the State System campus in Center City Philadelphia.
