On Boxing Day, the healthy baby boy suddenly stopped breathing, and help did not reach him in time. It took 35 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, and the fact that Liam's case was classified as non-urgent contributed to the paramedics' lengthy response time, according to Helsingin Sanomat.

"In the emergency call, we said that we found Liam unresponsive. Only later were we told that if a person is found unresponsive, help is not sent urgently. If we had worded it differently, perhaps said that the child had stopped breathing, help would have arrived," said the mother, who blames herself for saying the wrong term on the phone at a crucial moment.

According to the parents, the paramedics immediately determined that there was no heartbeat. They did not continue resuscitation. There was no doctor on site.

Happy Mother's Day! I was delighted to be able to attend the Mother's Day celebration and Youth Bridging service at Boulder Valley UU Fellowship in Lafayette this morning, which was led by Kitty, the director of youth and children's education, which we call School of the Spirit, the youth group assistant, with whom I'm not familiar and the high school youth who are graduating this year, both from high school and our program.

I have known Aaron and Lilianna since they were in elementary school and watched them grow into thoughtful, kind, compassionate adolescents and now, young adults. I have taught them in quite a few spiritual and religious education classes over the years, because I have taught every class from pre-school through high school, including Our Whole Lives (OWL), the Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ program that is award-winning and used by even some public schools throughout the country for sexuality gender education classes.

It was an amazing service and brought tears to my eyes thinking about the BIG difference these young people are already making in the world and how much they will probably contribute during their lives to peace and love in our community, partly because of who they are, and partly because of the love and support they have received from this community. This was the theme of their sharing with us their hopes and dreams for their futures.

After church I drove to The Greenbriar Inn to meet our family members there for Mother's Day Brunch. I had reserved a table for us all online, but, unfortunately, I had chosen NEXT Sunday's date, so they didn't have a table in the larger dining room. LUCKILY, they did have one in a smaller room, which worked out better because it was quieter and more private. While they set it up we went out into the garden where we played with Maple and her "Puppy", one of her favorite stuffed animals.

Unfortunately, Katie's dad, Bill, who is an anesthesiologist, had to work today, but we were grateful that the rest of us could be together, including Katie's brother, who is a software engineer and, NOW, Maple's Uncle Jack! The food was really good and they even had a few vegan options. We were happy to celebrate the three mothers among us, as well as the many mothers in the family who weren't able to be there.

On the way home I stopped to bring a Mother's Day gift to one of the most wonderful mothers I know, my dear friend, Esmeralda. She loves elephants and I often give her gifts in the images of elephants, so when I found this wooden elephant snack dish I knew she would like it, as well as the lovely pink orchid in the photo below. What a surprise that she had another orchid, the white one in the photo above, that was a gift for me!

I am the surrogate grandmother to Esmeralda and Miguel's three kids, since I began teaching their parents English before they were born and we became like a family. Their other grandparents live in Mexico and they haven't ever spent much time with them, especially recently, since our country is so inhospitable to people from Mexico, and they haven't visited in years. They either call me "maestra" , meaning "teacher" or "abuelita", meaning "little grandmother".

What a beautiful family! I love them all dearly and spend as much time as I can with them. They adore Maple and I hope she grows up to think of them as special people in her life, like older siblings.

I was extremely happy with my Mother's Day and the gifts I received. Being a mother has been one of the most challenging yet satisfying things I have ever done and I'm eternally grateful that I got to experience motherhood.

I received a very nice Mother's Day greeting from our niece, Aimey, who lives in Lakewood, and also a photo of her with her son, our great nephew, Indigo. Being a mother has also been challenging for Aimey, and she has persevered and grown as a person and as a mother over these last nearly six years. She adores her son and he is incredibly lucky to have her for his mother. She is smart, kind, funny, creative, caring, and completely dedicated to this amazing boy whom WE are fortunate to have in our family and whom WE also adore.

More Than Enough Rain

The overnight low reached 39 degrees, and today’s high was forecast as 48. I’m sure it only reached that high for a few minutes. The rain during the night was accompanied by wind that blew the drops against the window above our heads in the bedroom.

My blood sugar this morning remained high, at 192. There may be something more than diet and lack of exercise contributing to the numbers. Perhaps I have some kind of bug. The bass tone of my voice today suggests something going on with my lungs, though I have not felt any kind of actual illness.

Once Nancy and I had our coffee and played the brain games, we had some cinnamon toast, and then we were off to church for the Second Sunday in Lent. The streaming software seemed to cooperate much better today. I managed to get it started before the service.

On the way home from church, Nancy and I stopped to buy some groceries. We also bought a bundle of soft wood so we can have a fire that actually works the next time we want to have one.
