how to get into citizen science
what is citizen science?
it's scientists collaborating with everyday people to collect and analyze data!
why should i participate?
you can engage in science without needing a background or formal education in science. if you have passion for it, then you're all set!
it can teach you skills that you can put on a resume and take with you to use in other fields!
in some cases, you can earn service-learning/volunteer hours!
while anti-intellectualism is on the rise (especially in the US), it's more important than ever to learn about and care for the natural world, education, and academia as a whole
donations are always great, but many projects lack enough people to do the work, so that's where citizen scientists come in to help lighten the load
what can i do?
iNaturalist is probably the most popular citizen science project out there. you can take pictures of animals and plants and ID them (they have an auto-suggest feature that accounts for the appearance and location of the organism, and gives you likely species)
Merlin Bird ID from Cornell Lab is similar to iNat but only for birds, and gives the ability to record birdsong and ID birds based on that!
FathomVerse lets players ID deep sea animals from real images collected by researchers, improving the AI they use to ID! (reminder that analytical AI is great, generative AI is not!)
Zooniverse has 83 active projects ranging from subjects such as physics and biology to history and literature! pick your favorite subject and start there!
HerpMapper is like iNat but only for herps (reptiles and amphibians), and they're extra careful about sharing location data of all observations for the sake of protecting vulnerable species (this one has my herp prof on the advisory committee :D)
Smell Pittsburgh is a project aimed to track the air quality in Pittsburgh, one of the most polluted cities in the US
Sensor Community lets anyone buy an air or noise sensor to install and collect data about air or noise pollution (they have guides for assembling it and installing the necessary software)
FrogWatch USA from Akron Zoo accepts volunteers nationwide to ID frogs based on their calls during breeding season
Reef Life Survey accepts volunteers to help catalog and monitor coral reefs
WomSAT allows anyone to report wombat sightings so they can be protected! (only for Australia, of course)
Marine Debris Tracker lets anyone log marine pollution that they've cleaned up, as well as any dumping sites (they also collect data from smaller organizations including schools, so try to find a local one you can join!)
eButterfly is like iNat but just for butterflies!
Foldit is a free game where you can contribute to molecular research by learning about protein structures

I know a lot of people are on mobile but especially if you're on desktop open a gofundmelink in another tab. Gofundme is not a data tracker or malware site and touching a link will not immediately steal money from you. When you're there at the Gofundme page ALWAYS SKIM through the bio, disc, pages and more to see if there's anything genuinely suspicious:
AI art/badly compressed jpegs of people rather than clear images
Be wary of people misspelling (multiple times) a person's/various people's names. It can be an accident of transcribing software, yes, but it is odd that the family running a campaign on behalf of a person in Gaza is somehow forgetting that person's name.
OBVIOUSly, be careful whenever you see someone using other people's photos for their campaign. I screeched to a hault the first time I came across one of those.
-In order to make sure of the former, again ALWAYS check and briefly skim/scroll through a GoFundMe page to make sure you're getting the details.
Things that are not red flags or signs of a scam bot despite what some people want to make you think:
That the donation page exists at all because "I thought they DIDN'T HAVE internet in Gaza!!". 1, people still have phones and power in places so there's still people documenting their conditions. 2, depending of where you camping in or newly evacuated to yes there are still wifi spots in Gaza and people are using those brief period and spots to contact -
- Foreign friends and family. The gofundmepages are not being run directly by the people fleeing Gaza, they are being run by FRIENDS AND FAMILY who live outside Gaza and are trying to raise up enough money to send to people who will then get their loved ones to safety.
Pictures change. Yeah if it's a drastic and/or shitty quality pick out of nowhere that's sus like I said but I don't know how to tell you this but people posting new pictures of themselves or adding more pictures of their predicament is a VERY common thing to do on GoFundMe and and any campaign at all.
Goal amount changes. Yet again- on GoFundMe you have the ability to change your funding goal. In the case of emergencies in and out of Gaza MANY campaigns will suddenly shift to a higher goal thus putting them further from their og funding goal. Again, outside forces are the ones organizing these things and they themselves may suddenly be told or hit with the realization that they need more money.
I get it. It's more than realistic to be wary and careful and obviously not trust every random indie fundraiser you see, presuming it's working it good faith or is even real.
But, as someone who's run a gofundme all on my own and had to do her own campaigns and self-promo all on her own and so trusted legit organizations advice (which were themselves scams) that turned out to be just "copypaste. copypaste. copypaste. Give us more money and we'll have an agent robot proof read it for you" --it's really awful to presume most if not all of the Gaza donations MUST BE scams.
Do your due-diligence. Click the link and read through and then also read through the tumblr chain linking to said fundraiser to make sure it says "vetted by".

This bundle (direct link for anyone who doesn't want to click through to Twitter: https://www.humblebundle.com/books/terry-pratchetts-discworld-harpercollins-books) is only available in the US.
So are the rest of us just out of luck? Of course not, this is the internet! And I'm not even talking about 🏴☠️! If we want to buy this bundle and gain access to this deal and buy these ebooks legitimately, we just need to make Humble think that we're in the US.
How do we do that? Well, if you already have access to a VPN service that provides location redirection you can just use that (mostly, you'll still need to read from step 11 below), but for anyone who doesn't already have one, you can use Tor as a free substitute with a little bit of work.
What is Tor, you ask? The name stands for 'The Onion Router' and it's an open-source software project designed to protect users' privacy online. It does this via a number of methods designed to make it difficult for trackers to identify a specific user (blocking tracking cookies, steps to obfuscate browser fingerprinting) and their online activity (encrypting internet traffic and relaying it through their own network to hide your identity). It's that last part that is useful for us today, because we can use that relay network to digitally project ourselves into the US of A to buy Discworld books AND donate to charity! We just need to tweak a few settings to get it to do that for us.
Step-by-step guide for how to both get and configure Tor and then use it to get this bundle under the cut.
1. First of all, you're going to need to get Tor. This is very easy, because it's distributed for free; just go to https://www.torproject.org/ and download the browser for your operating system.
2. Having downloaded it, you need to install it. Shocking, I know!
3. Once installed, you will need to run the Tor Browser and press the Connect to Tor button once.
4. Once you are connected, close the browser window. Doing this creates configuration files that you will need to edit in order to have the relay go specifically via the US, instead of anywhere else in the world.
5. You need to locate the folder that Tor Browser is installed in. For Windows, by default, this will be on your Desktop (apologies to users of other OSes, I don't know the default locations for them, but you can find that info here: https://www.wikihow.com/Set-a-Specific-Country-in-a-Tor-Browser)
6. From the Tor Browser folder, you need to go to Browser > TorBrowser > Data > Tor. You should see a folder that looks like this:
7. Right-click on the 'torrc' file and select 'Open With'. On the "How do you want to open this file?" menu that pops up, select 'Notepad'
8. Ignore the stuff that's in there already, we don't want to change any of that. What we want to do is add in two lines at the bottom, which will tell Tor to find both an entry and exit point to its network that are within the US. So we need to add in the following lines:
EntryNodes {US} StrictNodes 1 ExitNodes {US} StrictNodes 1
Add them as shown, with each one on its own line. (You might expect you only need to set the exit node to US to make this work, but when I tested this it did not work).
9. Once you've copy-and-pasted those lines in, go to File > Save (or hit Ctrl + S). Do not 'Save As', this will create a new .txt file, we need to save our changes in the original torrc file with no extension.
10. Now, re-open Tor Browser and tell it to connect. If you go over to https://www.humblebundle.com/books/terry-pratchetts-discworld-harpercollins-books you should now see the bundle, rather than be told it's not available to you... right up until you log in to your account to buy it! Oh no, we're not done yet!
11. So, if you already have a Humble account, Humble will have it location-locked to the country where you created it, and will block bundles not available in that country, even if you're currently connecting from outside that country. There are two ways around this:
11. A. Create a new Humble account using your Tor browser so that it's set to the US by default. You should be able to use your existing paypal account/other payment methods with this account even if you use them on your main account, but I haven't tested this in person.
11. B. Humble lets you change the location of your existing account up to 3 times every 3 months to the location you are currently connecting from. Since you are currently connecting from the US, you can use this to change your location to the US, buy the Discworld bundle, and then from outside of Tor you can log back into your account and change it back to wherever you call home. To do that, go to Settings in the account dropdown on Humble:
That leads through to this page:
If you're currently connecting from a different location to the one in the Location box, it will allow you to select the location you are connecting from instead. It will prompt you to confirm the location change before it goes through.
12. Congratulations, you have successfully tricked Humble into thinking you are in the US and allowing you to buy the Discworld bundle. The bundle itself is redeemed through Kobo, and they don't care where in the world you are, so it doesn't matter if you change your Humble account location after you've bought the books, you'll still be able to redeem your purchase and access your ebooks.
13. Optionally, go back and edit the torrc file again and take out the lines we added to return Tor back to its default functionality.

YOOOO DISCWORLD IS ON HUMBLE BUNDLE!!!
If you've been on the fence about starting these books THIS IS YOUR SIGN

TurboTax Live Full Service vs. H&R Block

TurboTax vs. H&R Block is a big battle in the for-profit tax preparation field. Each has its distinct strengths and drawbacks, so it's worth investigating which option is best for you.
TurboTax vs. H&R Block: Which is Better?
The right tax software for you varies depending on your preferences. If you're looking for the most time-tested and simple do-it-yourself option -- and don't mind paying a little more -- TurboTax might be the right choice. However, tax filers who prefer less expensive software or personalized assistance should consider H&R Block.
Whichever option you choose, don't put it off; the longer you wait, the greater the chance for mistakes and stress.
About TurboTax
TurboTax offers plenty of tax preparation options, covering different filing situations and varying levels of tax expert support. This platform primarily has a do-it-yourself (DIY) route that asks straightforward questions to determine which tax forms you need and how to fill them out.
However, among DIY tax software, TurboTax is quite expensive and constantly tries to upsell products while you fill out paperwork. Other platforms are generally less expensive and some, like Cash App Tax, are free.
About H&R Block
H&R Block has do-it-yourself software and is known for its physical branches. It has thousands of offices across the U.S. so you can easily get started or upgrade for in-person assistance if needed.
TurboTax vs. H&R Block: Key Features
Both tax preparation giants offer online and downloadable software, a full-service option, expert human support, and several guarantees including accurate calculations, maximum refunds, and audit assistance. Both also have time-saving features that allow you to snap a photo of your W-2 instead of manually entering numbers line-by-line.
TurboTax Key Features
Simple questionnaire. TurboTax asks you a series of questions about your income and life events so you can fill out the correct tax form.
Donation calculator and tracker. You can enter your donations into TurboTax so you can figure out their value and record them during the year.
In-person option. If you want one-on-one help, you can find a “TurboTax Verified Pro” through the platform and meet with them in person. Availability and pricing may vary.
H&R Block Key Features
Transparent pricing. H&R Block has a no-surprise guarantee: If you pay more than the originally quoted price, you'll get a 20% discount on your next year's filing.
Personal assistance. With branches in every state, you can meet with a tax face-to-face.
Tax Review Double Check. You can have H&R Block look at your last three years of tax returns to confirm you haven't missed out on a big tax refund.
AI Tax Assist. H&R Block has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) to serve as a resource and it's included in all online versions at no additional cost.
TurboTax vs. H&R Block: Usability
Both companies give you the option to automatically fill in some of your information by uploading photos of your income tax forms. And, while Users can use a computer, both offer highly-rated mobile apps for iOS and Android to make their lives simpler.
Still, TurboTax shines with an easy-to-use platform. You'll get a series of jargon-free questions that make the process feel more like sitting down with a tax preparer.
H&R Block's setup isn't questionnaire-style. Instead, you'll get a series of forms to fill out. But, like TurboTax, the platform provides explanations and tips for a streamlined process.
TurboTax vs. H&R Block: Customer Service
It's natural to encounter questions when filing your taxes or helping someone else file taxes. Both platforms also offer expert assistance to help you navigate the process, although you'll likely have to pay more.
The exception is TurboTax Live Assisted Basic Edition, which features free live support for those filing simple returns. Plus, if you add the Live Assisted service (pricing for which starts at $99), you can get in touch via live chat, seven days a week.
With H&R Block, you'll have more options for personalized assistance due to a larger network of stores. Although hours vary, you can generally expect these retail locations to be open during regular business hours and possibly a little late for the convenience of tax filers after work.
Neither company has a great Trustpilot rating; both earned 1.2 out of 5 stars.
H&R Block vs. TurboTax: Comparing Free Options
TurboTax's Deluxe option is a more comprehensive option for the average filer, but let's briefly consider the free options again.
Both H&R Block and TurboTax offer free options for filers with simple returns. You can often use those options if you don't own a home, you have no investment income other than ordinary dividends or interest and you don't have rental property or business expenses.
You can't use any of the forms if you itemize deductions. However, there are some deductions available with the free plans. Specifically, you can claim the EIC and the Additional Child Tax Credit. H&R Block also includes Schedules 1 through 6, unlike TurboTax.
So if your finances are simple, the biggest consideration is which forms you need to file, since H&R Block includes more forms and schedules with its free plan.
Which Online Tax Software is Right for You?
Start by thinking about what you want from tax prep software. If you're hoping for a jargon-free experience, TurboTax may be right for filers with a simple tax situation. If you're looking for personalized help or appreciate transparent pricing, H&R Block may be the right choice for you.
Of course, other tax services may be a good fit for you. Aside from the free government programs listed earlier, you can go for lower-cost software if you don't mind a clunky user interface and fewer support options.

the thing about git is that you can put your stuff anywhere, including just keeping them on your own computer, or self-hosting or letting your friends store copy of your projects, and due to distributed nature of git versioning it Just Works
the thing about github and others is that at this point they're not being thought as hosting for git repos. like, it's still a core functionality, but it's overshadowed by
providing the infrastructure for project management (bug trackers, some way to send patches upstream, documentation wikis, CI/CD)
being effectively a social network/portfolio site (in fact linking my GitHub and Stack Overflow profiles on my CV is how I got hired despite having no prior job experience)
the former is something you can't easily replace because "hosting stuff for free" is not a great business model, and in addition, CI/CD requires non-trivial computational resources. Someone providing it has to have an incentive to do this. Atlassian (owner of Bitbucket) is a publicly traded company and therefore subject to whims of the shareholders. SourceForge's revenue is ads (and suffered a major controversy in 2013 which led people to migrate from it). GitLab is freemium, similarly to what GitHub's business model used to be (so let's hope it won't get sold to some major company). Codeberg is non-profit and therefore let's hope enough people donate to keep it running. Sourcehut is, uhhh, not sure, but I think a similar deal holds. GNU Savannah is non-profit, but you better be sold on the Free Software Foundation's approach to software.
the latter is bound by network effect and reputation
so technically there's a lot of alternatives to github, but also there's none, depending on how you look at it
looking to migrate my stuff from github to another service, and i know lots of people have been recommending to switch to gitlab for years, but is it still even that good? i see their front page advertise AI like crazy.
feature-wise what im looking for honestly is to have some private repos, and markdown to look similar enough to github so i don't have to spend too much time on the README files.

Things to Think About Post-Roe
Regardless of whether you live in a state where abortion is still legal or not, here are some things to think about moving forward. Most of us, me included, aren't old enough to remember a time before Roe. But it is going to impact all of us women, trans men, non-binary, and others along with those who love them.
1. Remove all period trackers/apps from your phone. Use a physical pocket calendar instead and use an easy-to-remember phrase like "lunch with (friend or SO)" or "return library books."
2. If you go to any facility for reproduction healthcare services, don't take your phone, or tracking data will place you there.
3. If you go to a facility for healthcare services, remember to wear a mask. Facial recognition software is a growing technology.
4. If you miscarry, don't tell your healthcare providers if you took anything. The treatment for abortion and miscarriage is the same. Those who miscarry can and will be criminally investigated and charged. There have been reports of them being turned in by their healthcare providers. BIPOC are at the highest risk for this and drug testing.
5. Incognito browsers are a weak defense. Deleting browsing data helps but isn't a failsafe. Use a VPN. Always.
6. Be careful who you trust. The father may not want that pregnancy or be ready for it. Tell me he (or someone else) wouldn't want the $10k bounty some states are offering for turning you in.
7. Many are posting links to viable organizations and networks to help those with unwanted pregnancies. Donate what you can. Vet them first.

Queer Gaming History- Caper in the Castro
We are thankfully in an era where there are more openly LGBT characters in video games than ever before. Just looking at the list of known queer video game characters on Wikipedia shows how much progress we've made with the early days being organized by decade and recent times being organized by individual year.
Since it's Pride Month, I'd like to talk about one of the earliest pieces of LGBT representation within video games and just why it was created.
This is 1989's Caper in the Castro. You can now play it for free here.
Just as a warning, the language used within the game is very much dated to the 80s. I don't mean this with just 80s slang, I mean that you're gonna see words that are considered slurs nowadays.
Caper in the Castro was developed and released during the height of the AIDS epidemic. While it was released for free, it was considered a piece of software known as charityware. Unlike other freeware, charityware is distributed as a method of encouraging downloaders to donate money to a certain cause. In this case, Caper in the Castro was made to raise money for those suffering from the AIDS epidemic.
We'll get more into how the AIDS epidemic influences the game in a bit. I think I should also show you guys what the game's about.
The above screenshot sets the scene pretty well. It's a short point and click adventure game where you have to save your friend, Tessy, from the evil Straightman. It's about a fifteen minute playthrough with a few fun ways to get yourself killed or arrested (as is the adventure game tradition).
You're limited to the few buildings on the city streets, but you can mostly tackle them in any order you want. You don't have to pick up specific items, just notes which last even if you die. The death screen is pretty iconic by the way.
Deja Vu? Who is she? There is no Ace Harding, just Tracker McDyke.
Tracker McDyke is wonderful by the way. Yes you can pick locks, but you're gonna solve most of your lock problems by just shooting them. Gunshots are just background noise in this neighborhood, nobody gives a shit and neither should you.
You can also look at a lady showering and she'll say a happy "hey~" to you!
There's no reason for this. Sometimes it's just nice for Detective McDyke to look at a sideboob and butt.
It's not all butts and boob however. While the story is short, the surroundings tell a true reflection of what the queer community went through during that time (and sadly still does on a different scale).
We're going back to talking about the AIDS crisis now, because the very idea of the game was based on the cruel reality C.M. Ralph experienced. It was normal for many in the queer community to just have friends disappear and never be found. Many families wouldn't claim those who were found and same sex partners weren't given spousal rights.
In Caper in the Castro though, you can save your friend.
Tessy is found unharmed toward the end of the game and it's easy to free her. You get to be a badass and shoot her chains off before burning the whole place down.
As I type this, I think about what a lovely role you get to play in this game. You play as a gun toting lesbian that takes down the evil Straightman, save your missing drag queen friend, then burn down all of Straightman's supplies.
If this game came out today, people would say it's inciting violence against straight people- Wait a minute! There was a censored release!
C.M. Ralph did put out a commercial release for Caper in the Castro called Murder on Main Street! It takes out everything queer in order to appeal to a publisher. I can't be mad though because you do what you have to in order to get that bag and let's be real.
There's no way in hell a publisher would've taken this.
Caper in the Castro itself is named after San Francisco's historically gay neighborhood, the Castro. While many have found a community among their queer peers, many places within were under threats and violent acts.
The scenario presented within the game can only be solved by members of the community. The police can't help you, only a lesbian with a gun can. We as a community need to support each other, especially with how things have been going in 2023.
I wanted to talk about this game for pride month not just because it's an important part of gaming history. To me, it represents the reason we celebrate pride.
Because there's a scene in the game where you walk into a diner and see two gay couples just having a comfortable late night meal.
And I think about how we deserve this comfortable happiness for many decades to come.
...and this game also gives us the "fantasy" of burning down the establishments of those who want to kill us.
Happy pride everyone. I hope you're all safe and surrounded by people you love and also love you in return.

Newsletters' glorious history

It sure feels like we're living through an unprecedented boom in newsletters, but while email-based newsletters are experiencing a major surge, newsletters themselves have a long and honorable history.
https://www.wired.com/story/peak-newsletter-that-was-80-years-ago/
In Wired, Michael Waters describes the newsletter boom of the 1930s, starting with Claud Cockburn's "The Week," launched in 1933 out of disgust with his employer, The Telegraph, and its right-wing complacency (Cockburn went on to break the story of Franco's fascist coup).
The rise of cheap mimeographs - coupled with the USPS's subsidy for printed materials - created a boom in all kinds of niche and political publications, from sf fanzines to Allen Ginsburg's self-published chapbooks to The Ladder, a 1950s lesbian newsletter.
Left-populism had a major home in newsletters, providing an alternative to the pro-big-business/pro-monopoly/anti-labor/anti-New Deal bias of the newspaper industry.
I hadn't known about In Fact, the newsletter founded by the ex-Chicago Tribune muckraker George Seldes.
Seldes billed In Fact as "An Antidote for Falsehood in the Daily Press," reached 176,000 subscribers, and featured exposes on strike-breakers, tobacco industry/newspaper conspiracies to cover up smoking-related health risks, and FBI anti-union spying.
In Fact inspired IF Stone to start his legendary Weekly, a 20-year newsletter that Stone published to 70,000 subscribers from a hand-cranked mimeograph machine.
But this golden age of leftist newsletter publishing was crippled by the Red Scare, and the risks of appearing on a list of subscribers to a radical publication.
The right's newsletters - paranoid, proto-Bircher publications like Joseph P Kamp's Headlines, and What's Behind Them ("Are Communists Infiltrating the YMCA?") morphed into the powerful newsletters published by Ayn Rand and Phyllis Schlafly, buoyed by the direct mail boom.
Today, the legacy of the direct mail boom is a clutch of wealthy, ruthless grifters making enormous bank by terrorizing elderly Fox viewers into making donations they can't afford.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/20/no-mask-no-service/#dorr-brothers
But lefty, anti-monopoly newsletter publishing is also alive and well, as tech startups like Substack promise both revenue streams AND access to the last truly federated distribution system: email.
I really enjoy many of these new newsletters, though I worry that, on the one hand, they include a lot of invasive tracking, and on the other, that consolidation in email providers makes them incredibly dependent on Big Tech's forbearance.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/06/08/the-last-federated-platform/#postal-inspectors
I have my own (totally independent, tracker-free, zero analytics, ad-free) newsletter, the Plura-List.
https://mail.flarn.com/mailman/listinfo/plura-list/
I've discovered that if a bunch of my subscribers on, say, Apple Mail, don't open their daily newsletters, Apple's analytics classes the publication as spam for ALL subscribers on its platform.
The consolidated nature of email is also very apparent in the software I use for the Plura-list, the venerable Mailman tool, a creaking dinosaur that looks terrible and is difficult for both publishers and subscribers to use.
And yet, it's the best option if you want to host your own mailing lists (rather than exposing your subscribers to potential data-mining, etc).
Meanwhile, if this history of mailing lists has you intrigued, I strongly urge you to check out the anthologies of IF Stone's Weekly.
http://ifstone.org/collected_writings.php
I discovered these in the early 90s when I was working at Toronto's College Books, where the owner, Michael Jackel, had ordered them for our politics section. These anthologies absolutely blew my mind and transformed the way I thought about personal political writing.
Decades later, they still resonate.

Bt Client Windows
Jun 15, 2019.
Compact BitTorrent free client with expansive capabilities. Download uTorrent for free and enjoy!
There are many BitTorrent clients available on Windows and other operating systems, but none were previously available for Windows RT. Torrex Beta, available from the Windows. Jun 17, 2020. Mar 23, 2020.
uTorrent is an efficient BitTorrent client for Windows from the originator of the BitTorrent protocol. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in uTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading, and Mainline DHT. Additionally, uTorrent supports the protocol encryption joint specification and peer exchange. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources--typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all.

How would each of the Robinsons handle Covid-19 lockdown?
NOTE: This is a silly thought experiment intended for virtual fun and frolic. If you have the means, self-isolate; if you have even more means, donate to your local COVID relief fund & think abt mutual aid to thy neighbours.
Now enough of the real world.
Firstly, the Robinsons live in a utopia where society is sustainable & environmentally friendly and where we no longer have monocultural industrial farming that causes mass epidemics. Worst case scenario the world would experience minor discomfort as its 👌 healthcare system and humaniatarian economy would mean COVID-19 would pass in two weeks where everyone stayed home, got tested, played animal crossing, and went back to work.
That mumbo jumbo aside, in the universe where everything is on fire, I would still imagine that the wealthy, crafty, and optimistic Robinsons are able to continue their lives in much the same as they did before: they’re eccentric billionaire shut ins with all the resources they need not only for self-sufficiency but to sustain their weird hobbies without ever leaving the property indefinitely. Indoor zoo, gym, pool, gardens, greenhouses, fly vending machines, back up power grid, indoor labs, art studios, sky-high ceilings for canons, propeller hats and indoor snowball fights, indoor studio & live frog performances, indoor train, robots & octopus servants to go to the grocery store, cut your hair, get your mail, etc. On top of that they have the latest and greatest & would have no problems telecommunicating w friends via holographic emojis.
HOWEVER the Robinsons would probably still do their part to help others & possibly feel the burn of the world dying around them alongside the economy’s impending collapse.
Order of the Robinsons’ likeliness to lose their marbles: Joe, Tallulah, Franny, Petunia, Fritz, Carl, Gaston, Art, Spike + Dimitri, Wilbur, Bud, Billie, Lucille, Buster, Cornelius, Lefty
Tallulah, if she has any seamstressing skills (or employs people who do) might convert her fashion business into cotton mask business.
Fran would perform live stream concerts and she would’ve been a part of that ugly Imagine celebrity-sing-along video. She might also start to do increasingly unhinged gardening vlogs like January Jones. (She would’ve also secretly donated lots of cash to charity.)
Wilbur’s sitting around playing video games, let’s not kid ourselves. (Neil probably has the timelab on triple lockdown, too.)
Art is a delivery guy so he’s obviously still working. The fact that he delivers intergalactically begs the question of wether the bad universe Robinsons have to deal with an intergalactic as well as global plague.
BHG is dead I’m sorry :(
Neil, as the owner of a multi-billion dollar corporation, is the only other Robinson likely to be interacting with the politics of the pandemic directly. His business isn’t an essential one but could easily be converted:
Reusable PPE: medical and sanitation supplies are disposable for obvious reasons but in times of scarcity, it’s wise to consider reusable alternatives like silicon bodysuits and plastic helmets.
Better masks: As of today a reusable respirator called the North 7700 is already being considered as an alternative to disposable surgical masks that have to be individually fitted to the wearer. Every. Time. Purportedly these masks are also more effective than the N95s (by like 1-5%). They have not been univsarlly adopted and they are also super awkward and bulky for surgeons who might need more space in their field of vision. Neil’s likeliest covid project is to redesign the the surgical respirator mask to be slimmer, versatile, accessible, efficient and resizable. I’m picturing a very fancy, transparent, silicone version of the N95. Maybe they automatically fit to the wearer through sci-fi magic.
Maybe he develops spray-on gloves as seen in a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ spray-on shoes?
ROBOTS & other automisation to replace engadagered essential workers such as grocery store clerks and delivery people. RI could develop a fully automated postal service & cleaning staff for hospitals. This could also be how the reusable PPE is sanitised. Depending on how intelligent these robots are, some of them could even sub in for orderlies and nurses
Better testing: automate mass testing
Higher accessibility to the internet and better telecommunication software: WiFi everywhere the way Nikola Tesla intended, free laptops / phones / devices and improved video conferencing technology
Software that helps w e-learning and e-working
Automated industrial farming? With an automated delivery system?
(In a post covid world this could lead to fully automated luxury communism or fully automated surveillance dictatorship your call)
Efficient pop up test sites, temporary sinks, etc
Improvements to public transportation (which we can assume is already automated so there’s no danger of drivers getting infected). Maybe the monorail cleans itself & has better air filtration. Maybe the seating and poles etc are rearranged to encourage people to stand apart.
Some kind of insta-garden for people wo yards in their homes? (Aka me. I would like this please thanks)
Bread machine
Maybe he helps develop some kind of powerful purel-like soap that kills the virus without water. But that’s not quite up his engineering ally so
Collabs and funding with biotech companies & hospitals to streamline hospital procedure, improve respirator, PPE, COVID testing technology & even vaccine research. Cornelius thinks the human body is gross but he also feels a moral obligation to help so...
If Neil were evil, he could also contribute to surveillance policing, where those disobeying social distancing and social isolation rules are either admonished by drones, surveilled with cameras, trackers, GPS, facial recognition or even house arrest anklets. But again he’s not evil...
I would also like to think that he pays for his employees’ health insurance and sick leave. Again, we hope he’s not evil.
Maybe the family also donates some food & extra supplies. With so many overseas friends they might send care packages or smth. Fran & her brothers are sure to video call the franahuccis often (their parents are in their seventies/eighties at this point).
The would also implement safety measures Gaston the over-50s and disabled among them. Joe, Bud and Lucille will find a way to self isolate from the rest of the family in style. And possibly with a lifetime’s supply of purell. Maybe they still attend dinner via Skype hologram. Or maybe each individual lives their lives as normal except in a giant self-isolation bubble that Neil invented. Bud will probably create a silly YouTube series to cheer up kids.

pir*cy masterpost
you guys already know whats up babes!!! clean links, assuming you use adblocker (i use 2 adblockers because im paranoid and weird but adblock plus is probably fine alone, dont be me) and dont click anything sketchy, no advanced popup extravaganza, share links wit ya friends.
⭐ web oasis - literally what this masterpost is trying to achieve. bookmark it, make it your homepage, it fucks. a dozen different search engines for whatever you could need, curated lists of various websites for anything from torrents to streaming to reading and everything else. also has a pastebin clone and an arcade section. great website
⭐ vpn providers - just like, in general? use a VPN. never NOT use a vpn. i remember 1 time i was torrenting super mario odyssey and that got us a cease and desist notice LMAO so i use nordvpn, which isnt the best, but you can share with up to 5 other people and there’s discounts all over youtube for 70% off of the 3 yr plan which is REALLY cheap. if you don’t have any money to spend on it, there’s always windscribe’s free plan which, while not comparable to paid vpn in terms of reliability and data, still gives you what you need to do what you need. PLEASE use a vpn if you’re torrenting, and share your vpn with friends.
⭐ torrenting sites that aren’t TPB - the pirate bay fucking sucks okay? don’t go on it. it’s a massive honeypot and has a bunch of ads even with adblocker. i recommend 1337x (the tracker site i use for almost everything), solidtorrents (weboasis uses this to search a lot of sites for torrents, great indexer), and although full of stuff that would make granny tumblr clutch her pearls, rarbg (has a lot of...tasteful content, as well as shows, cartoons and music). there’s always /t/ on 4chan but there’s no way in hell i’m linking that because it’s almost all porn and racist cartoons but sometimes there’s good music and rare stuff on there.
⭐ qBittorrent - LITERALLY DON’T USE ANY OTHER TORRENT MANAGER. a lot of them have crypto miners (COUGH COUGH µTORRENT). be safe. use opensource. qbittorrent is user friendly as well as gives more technical users under-the-hood access to stuff in the advanced section of settings, but i wanna keep this post fool-friendly, so just keep it as it is.
⭐ soulseek - you could bother with a lot of different torrents and whatever for music, but soulseek is entirely peer-to-peer, exempts ini files from searches (to prevent malware spreading) and tells you the quality and filetype of files you’re downloading. feel free to donate to the devs or just share soulseek, it’s good and only gets better with more users! it also has a customizable interface. mine is purple
⭐ file software - okay, so now that you have your files, what now? for archive files (what a lot of games are stored in), don’t use winrar. winrar sucks. use 7-zip, an archive extractor and creator. it also doesn’t pester you for payment. being opensource.
~~~ as for music and video, use VLC media player! literally the most used piece of software on my computer. not only does it play a LOT (and i mean a LOT) of filetypes, there’s also DVD-ripping compatibility and a way to download youtube videos without all that sketchy stuff in the middle. (if anyone’s interested, i can also share my discord rich presence stuff to show what you’re watching/listening to on VLC thru your discord status!)
~~~ if you’re desperate for stuff on bandcamp, media sites with large image galleries, or youtube, you could try jdownloader. i wouldn’t advise it, per se, even though i have it on my own computer just because they’re known for having sketchy installers on their software. but it is very useful and sorts your files well when theyre downloaded.
⭐ ask around! - there’s always people willing to help you hunt for stuff you need, or there might be a friend with the dvd of that ONE movie you’re looking for. if you have any “rare” stuff, share it, seed it, spread it!
have fun babes and remember: fuck buying media we share like men
